Vatican Angered By NYT Coverage Over Abuse Charges
The Catholic Church is defending Pope Benedict XVI from accusations of covering up sexual abuse scandals, but it's become increasingly difficult due to the media coverage.
And they're singling out the New York Times for "targeting the whole church, targeting the pope, and to that we must say `no' in the name of truth and in the name of justice," said Warsaw Archbishop Kazimierz Nycz.
Vienna's Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn also claims that Benedict "had a very clear line of not covering up but clearing up."
He continued:
"I admit that I often feel a sense of injustice these days. Why is the church being excoriated? Isn't there also abuse elsewhere? … And then I'm tempted to say: 'Yes, the media just don't like the church! Maybe there's even a conspiracy against the church?' But then I feel in my heart that no, that's not it."
The Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, claims that these accusations are a "clear and despicable intention" by the media to strike at Benedict "at any cost."
And in the article posted on the Vatican's site on Wednesday, Cardinal William Levada, wrote, "I am not proud of America's newspaper of record, The New York Times, as a paragon of fairness."
But the Times has fired back!
"The allegations of abuse within the Catholic church are a serious subject, as the Vatican has acknowledged on many occasions," said spokeswoman Diane McNulty. "Any role the current pope may have played in responding to those allegations over the years is a significant aspect of this story."

The Catholic Church refuses to take ANY responsibility and in no way do they represent Jesus Christ. Actually, based on actions, they represent the demon. It makes me sick that they go through so much to cover up what is going on. I was born and raised as a Catholic and would never affiliate with them. Four or possibly more priests in my area alone (small town) while I was in school were charged with sexual abuse. There was an orphanage in my province that was known for the molestation of young boys and it was covered up for many years by the police and the church. Disgusting! Hard to believe that so many priests stand by the whole "Homosexuality is a sin", yet have no trouble with performing and covering up sexual abuse done to young boys.

A person so holy and close to God should fear what he has done and take a step down from his position…the church is not God to be giving a pat on the back and saying its alright-thats left up to the man upstairs. They should be sentencing these men in a imprisonment environment.

Yes, there is abuse elsewhere and people are targeting the church. This is because Church is supposed to be a safe haven for people. It is supposed to be a place where people go to find comfort and forgiveness, a place where people in charge will take care of their flock and lead them. It is not supposed to be a place where children go to get raped. The church needs to be held responsible, and if the pope covered anything up he should face what others would face. Jail. That won't happen though and that is part of the problem why people are upset. Maybe if the church came into the 20th century and let priests marry it might solve some of the problem. The gay rule should probably be looked at. I knew a gay man who became a priest. He thought it was funny as hell that he was gay and becoming a priest and everyone knew and looked the other way. It is your prerogative to hate or belittle Catholics or whatever it is you are suggesting but I can tell you that I subscribe to no religion quite simply because I think they are cults and practice mind control and because most of what I believe is evil originates from one religion or another.
