In Malawi this morning, a judge ruled that the two gay men who were arrested in December for getting engaged will have to stand trial for their "crimes."
This order will demand that Steven Monjeza and Tiwonge Chimbalanga's lawyer call forth defense witnesses to help deny charges that they partook in "gross indecency." Having already spent three months in jail, if they are convicted of committing "homosexual acts", they can received a maximum prison sentence of 14 years!
Absurd! We're sure other people have done a lot worse with a lot less punishment!
Here's hoping it won't come to that for you guys!

I am THE BIGGEST Madonna fan ever - but this really pisses me off - she should be saying/doing something. This is outrageous!
Other countries have different rules about homosexuality. If you want to be gay, go to a place that allows it, don't blatantly violate the rules (no matter how unjust they are) then complain when you get the punishment. Not every country is as "free" as the US…
Heres the thing you have to remember "Perez", remember this when you go marching at your "Prop Hate" rally. People can die for this in other countries. Legal and violent ramafications. With that being said, I'm not saying for anyone to deny who they are, or whatever it is, but, when it comes to surviving, to living and being safe, especially in places where its so conservative and its legally looked down upon and even can cause harm to the individual, maybe you shouldn't be that person playing a hero and revolutinary if you can't except the possible consquences for your actions. I'm sure these men were well aquainted with the law and knew the consequences had this been brought to light on a governmental scale.
Hey, if the law is in place you are expected to obey it. Do you think gays should have special privileges. OOPS forgot who I was talking to.

I like you Perez and i just cant get enough of your blog but you have to understand something,unlike North America and Europe and everywhere else where its acceptable to be gay in Africa its a different story.I am from Zambia which borders with Malawi.For us in Africa its more of a cultural thing and i really dont know if they is a day when they will accept couples that are not man and wife.Countries in Africa are third world countries and they have other issues like war, hunger and so on ,so for them to accept people who are not man and woman its gonna be a lonnnnnnnnnnnng ass time.I personally dont care who you love,its hard enough to find love so if you love a guy, a girl i dont bloody care as long as at the end of the day your happy and you have someone to love you back the way you love them.

Re: CutlerFan – First of all, people have every right to live free in the country they were born in. They might also not have the desire to move, and even if they do they might not have the money and resources to do so. Not to mention the immigration issues they'd have to deal with.
i think that is the law of that country and we cant do anything to change it. everywhere isnt like an episode of Kell on Earth; the whole world isnt accepting of gays and honestly im not sure they "must" be. we all have different views and i dont expect a country that i dont live in to be accepting of gays when USA still hasnt nationalized gay marriage.
1) there are a lot bigger problems in malawi that need to be dealt with, gay rights not being one of the urgent ones.
2) the whole world shouldn't be the same, stop comparing everywhere to the western world.

Most people don't have "rights" to do anything. Their rights are based on the laws of the country they live in, like it or not, fair or not. I wish it were different.

If you had added why to your original post, I doubt you would have gotten that reaction. I live in the Northern Hemisphere, where women have been battling inequality longer.
It's unfortunate, but at least they only have to worry about prison instead of a death sentence. It also does a lot to bring attention to the inequality, which is probably why they chose to take the risk in the first place.
