This Is Messed Up!

A Dubai appeals court upheld the one-month jail sentence for British couple Ayman Najafi and Charlotte Adams who were convicted of kissing in a restaurant.

An Emirati woman complained about their public kiss in a restaurant, which the couple attests was just a peck on the cheek in greeting. But they were arrested in November and convicted of inappropriate behavior and illegal drinking.

The appeals court judge upheld their original sentence of jail time and a fine of 1,000 dirhams ($270) each. They have 30 days to appeal to a higher court.

Talk about strict enforcement of PDA!

again, why do ppl go there? yea it looks cool, but its not worth it. I'm satisfied with the pictures I see on the internet.

  2. 2

Why would anyone even want to live there?

  3. 3

When you go to someone elses country you have to respect their rules and laws, whether you like them or not. It's not 'terrible' its just the way it is. Americans need to understand that, and comments like "why would anyone want to live there?" and "why do people go there" are part of the reason why the world hates Americans!!

  4. 4

Because its their culture stupid. They're very strict about things like that over there. Everyone knows that. =/

  5. 5

i'm wondering the reason for the existence of the muslims….

  6. 6

    Re: One_Night_Only
i think its terrible and awful.
My friend lived there for a year and he said ppl there are fucked up.And he'd rather kills himself then live in that shithole.

  7. 7

i respect other cultures so much, but when i read about their laws it infuriates me.Like if a woman gets divorced and remarries she'll lose a custody. If father does the same he wont. What kind of a sick logic is that.Idiots.

  8. 8

Why do people even go there? The place has always sounded phony to me. Building all these skyscrappers, and yet they are rolling in debt. I understand making love on the beach, but you can't even give your g/f a peck on the cheek? That's just way ridiculous.

  9. 9

And they allowed Sex and the City 2 to be shot in the city? I am sorry, Dubai has always seemed phony to me, a very materialistic city which is actually un-muslim like.

  10. 10

Fair enough you should respect the rules of a country, but that is just fucking awful.

  11. 11

While I totally disagree with the Dubai appeals court ruling, perhaps they should have considered the old adage "when in Rome…do as the Romans do" and curtailed their kissy-faces until they were behind closed doors. You shouldn't disregard another country's laws/rules simply because you don't like them. Go vacation in another place if the regulations in Dubai are not to your liking!

  12. 12

Do not sh*t on the Muslim laws, they will shove it right down your throat. Does not taste like chicken.

  13. 13

Something is amiss in the story. I've lived in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, and Dubai and yes, things are strict, but you're not carted off to jail for a Hollywood kiss (touching cheek-to-cheek) on the face.

  14. 14

Re: One_Night_Only – Wow.. yeah it looks nice enough, but I have never figured out why people would vacation there, unless they get off on strict ass laws and rules… i don't think that is just Americans that feel that way, obviously this British couple feels the same way so..

  15. 15

So when I go to Burbank, CA, and am in their local park, which I'm completely alone in…and light a ciggie in the deserted parking lot, it'ok to fine me $700?

  16. 16

@jsqta im wondering the reason of your existence…
and like always make an arab country look bad! there is something else to this story for sure! you cant go to jail for kissing someone on the cheek! ive lived there i would know…

  17. 17

Sad how violence is OK, but displays of affection is not.

  18. 18

Why is it terrible? A country is entitled to make its own laws regarding public intimacy. Just because its ok in your country doesn't mean other countries don't have to follow suit.

  19. 19

I understand their laws, etc…but how can you expect a vacationing couple to know?…

I saw pictures of Dubai all over the internet, Dubai in Adam Sandler's Zohan movie, etc and I wanted to go there… I would probably get arrested and put in jail for a year if I hadn't read this crap!…

  20. 20

it really says a lot when it's illegal to kiss someone in public in some muslim countries but public beheadings…oh those are just fine. sad, archaic, demented cultures.

  21. 21

Re: One_Night_Only – i get where you're coming from and understanding others' cuture, just like how eruopeans always say americans are so uptight about nudity, but maybe this couple didn't know that and it is a little strict. they should be have been giving a warning

  22. 22

Re: stained_fruitcake – sure they "can" make up their own laws about public intimacy but we can comment about them and have public opinions about them can you say that same for *those* cultures.

  23. 23

hey, its their rules, you go there- you have to abide by them.i dont feel bad at all for them. thats what you get for going to a muslim country.

  24. 24

Cultural beliefs may be one thing, but when it comes to rigidity and cruelty, it's completely unacceptable whether it be on American soil or in any other country. These Arab countries are repressed, backward and continually engage in human rights violations. That emerati woman should stick a vibrator under her burka and get a life.

  25. 25

this is a really old story. i read this a month ago on a spanish news site for my spanish class.

plus, the only reason why they got into trouble was because a little girl told her mom and her mom got offended. and they only have to pay 200 euros. when traveling to other countries people have to respect their rules

  26. 26

well I now know of one place to check off the vacation list.
how stupid of Dubai. why weren't they just charged or just given a warning? was it really necessary to throw them in jail for a *month* when they probably didn't know they did something culturally wrong?
jesus christ. good luck getting tourists now.

  27. 27

Maybe it's time some of you started appreciating that Americans have more rights than almost anyone in the world. If you go to other countries - know their laws. The arrogance is why the rest of the world is not so pro-American any more.

  28. 28

There are too many backwards ignorant people in the Arab world. There will never be peace in that region as there are so many hateful people that are still living in the 15th century. And these are our allies?-as Saudi Arabia where recently a woman was raped by 3 men. The result-she was given 6 mos in jail for going out without a male relative. WTF??

  29. 29

Hello?? This is the U.A.E., not Saudi Arabia. I've been there several times, dressed in mini skirts and I saw many local women do the same. This is ridiculous, the were not even a couple, it was an amicable peck on the cheek. That woman was probably jsut jealous and thought "If I can't have it, no one can". Time to get over stupid shit like that. We don't have to respect other cultures or religions if they're being completely irrational.

  30. 30

    That's reaaalyy messed up!

  31. 31

$270 a piece and a month's prison is not that bad for an arab country. They could have been lapidated.

  32. 32

I think people should do their homework and study the cultures before they go to a certain country. What were they thinking. It's a GCC country. They were looking for trouble by doing this. It's not good to over react. Respect the country rules and you'll stay there in peace :)

  33. 33

kissing on the cheek? thats a lie !! it wont be reported if it was so ! i live here and i know the rules! if it was some intimate touching or a french kiss thats when its reported! other thing .. if you visit a country you should atleast learn their culture n rules ..n ppl should respect it or else DO NOT COME 2 MY COUNTRY n spread the sick acts in public .

  34. 34

That "no kissing" crap should be posted on all the brochures the country puts out to bring travelers in . . . I have no idea why anyone would desire to go there, anyway.

  35. 35

I live in Dubai and I can tell you that they are very tolerant in the U.A.E compared to other gulf states. There are plenty of places to buy and drink alcohol legally and most supermarkets even have a pork section. The main problem in this story is that Ayman (although being called British) is from an Iranian MUSLIM family.

  36. 36

Re: uae4life – You and yours stay the fuck out of are country,BITCH

  37. 37

I live in Dubai and I love it. I'm sure this couple was doing alot more than pecking on the cheek for them to get arrested. The local papers report they were drunk and fondling each other in the restaurant where there were families and children. Last year a British couple made headlines after they were arrested for having sex on a public beach in Dubai. I don't think this behaviour is legal or condoned in public places in the US either. Is this the same country where Janet Jackson got chastised for showing her nipple in public? What about Erykah Badu's arrest last for stripping down in public? Stop being racist and hating on Dubai and look in your own backyard!

  38. 38

Their law's are not irrational or unjust, they are just relative to that culture. Dubai's laws like most of the countries in that region originate from Islam, which is a highly conservative religion. If you are traveling or moving to that region of the world you should really look into what is and isn't appropriate behavior.

  39. 39

I am from California and have lived in Dubai for the last couple months, people have come up to me and my boyfriend and asked us not to kiss, hug etc. It's hard sometimes because you just forget where you are and that you aren't allowed to touch your boyfriend in public. Seems silly to us but it's their culture, and what they are used to. Not just Americans, but people everywhere need to learn to be more tolerant of other cultures/ traditions, this has caused us many problems over the years. I'll admit i sometimes get frustrated with the restrictions here but it just makes me more excited to get home and appreciative of my Country. As to "why would anyone want to go there" which i think is a pretty ignorant thing to ask, for someone who has never had the chance to visit… its gorgeous. There is so much to see and do, and it is eye-opening to experience another culture. Open your minds.

  40. 40

Ok….so I am a Canadian living in Dubai….and well…..you all sound pretty uneducated. First of all…THIS iS NOT THE WHOLE STORY. Apparently the 2 were not "pecking on the cheek" but going at it pretty hot and heavy in a hotel RESTAURANT, where the womans CHILD witnessed the couple and complained. I think most of us would agree that sticking your tongue down someones throat even in America should be left for private, but ESPECIALLY in a place like Dubai, where it is considered offensive and indecent. Dubai is actually a very liberal city to live in. I heard stories that you cant hold hands here etc..its all BS. My husband and I can show affection, but you just have to be mature and tasteful. So its not as sexually liberal, but isnt that what makes the world amazing? That we all have different cultures. I sure am glad not every country has adopted the "american way"… nothing wrong with having class and respect vs. redneck hillbillies and trailer park trash making out in the streets……. and PS..why would anyone want to live here? Because the people are sooo friendly, because the weather is great, because there is SOOO much to do here that you can NEVER get bored, because you can take the afternoon off and go ride a camel in the desert and then go snowboarding in the evening at an indoor ski resort. Its an adult playground…..

  41. 41

Why is that terrible? They deserve what they got.

They were tourists in a country with strict moral codes and with these codes strict penalties are attached to them. They got caught. They now must pay the price.

It's like those morons who get caught with drugs in countries that have zero tolerance and everyone is supposed to feel sorry for these idiots.

You want to have sex? Do drugs? Transport drugs? Kiss your man/woman in public? Then don't go to these conservative countries. Go elsewhere.

  42. 42

I would never want to go to Dubai and this is the most liberal place out of the arab middle east countries. They are barbaric ,backwards and don't respect civil rights. If you are gay the only place you can go to in the middle-east is Israel which has tons of gay bars.

  43. 43

Re: One_Night_Only – And maybe this is the reason most of the civilized world hates places like Dubai.

  44. 44

Re: guiltypleazure – Wow what a comparison,go back to dubai and live in hell.

  45. 45

Re: ahhhhh! – You wonder why these same people move in droves to England and Paris and the rest of liberal Europe and can't respect the liberal ,tolerant traditions in thos e countries ,instead they try to change europe into a third world theocracy. Respect works both ways.

  46. 46

Why would anyone in the free world go to a place like this? You couldn't pay me. I won't travel to the south in my own country because it's backwards why would I ever go to a muslim country, sorry I'm liberal.

  47. 47

    Re: canuckgrl
exactly this. when in rome, people.

  48. 48

Re: housewifey – best comment here. I totally agree.
I really don't believe it was a "peck on the cheek" either .. NO ONE would have made an issue about that if that's all it was. Yeah being fined for kissing is pretty harsh, but if you're not willing to respect the cultural rules of the place where you're living, DON'T LIVE THERE. Period.
If you are living in the Middle East or any Muslim culture (or India, or anywhere else for that matter), you should be aware of what is acceptable behavior and what is not. In Dubai and MANY places in the world, making out in public is NOT. Case closed.

  49. 49

Knowitall, you are ignorant. Israel defends your civil rights only if you're Jewish. Israel is an appartheid, racist state with horrendous policies. It has violated the human rights of indigenous native Palesitnians for decades. I can't believe you hold up Israel as a model. Go get an education about other countries first before you form such strong opinions and call yourself "knowitall". You should rename yourself "knownothing".

  50. 50

Re: knowitall – my god you are ignorant. First of all "THEY" are barbaric, backwards and don't respect civil rights?? WHO is "they" exactly, keeping in mind over 70% of Dubai's population is made up of foreigners from around the world??? You obviously have no idea what you are talking about.
Barbaric? That's a sick joke. Again: if you have never BEEN anywhere shut the eff up about how the people there "all are". You know less than nothing.
And if your ONLY interest in travel and other cultures is the gay bars, yeah the middle east is not for you. In fact don't bother leaving LA. You would just embarrass other intelligent gay people out there anyway.

  51. 51

    USA, USA, USA!

  52. 52

Re: One_Night_Only – I don't think that is true at all. When Muslims come to Australia, even if some Christian/Catholic/other religious people find Muslim women's 'wear' offensive, which I know I do, they still do it without a care in the world.

  53. 53

    Where is my posssttt

  54. 54

Why do people go there anyway? Dubai would be nothing without tourists and foreign $$ so let them die as they deserve!

  55. 55

Piers Morgan doesn't think oil money smells and neither do a lot of celebs and mere mortals who work for a living.
Sure they might have backward and repressive laws but in the end $$$ is all that is important.
And they have oil $$$ coming out of there ears. I think they bought up half of Britain and half of New York allready.

  56. 56

These 2 are not even a couple. The "kiss" was a greeting between friends and it was not directly witnessed by the complainant, it was reported to her by her 2 year old daughter. So these folk were convicted on the word of a baby. The best thing we in the west can do is stay the hell away from this place and watch the illusion get swallowed by the desert.

  57. 57

Re: uae4life – Fine i'll stay out of your shithole desert, you stay the fuck off our internet sites and spreading your sick rhetoric in public. In short go fuck yourself. Oh wait you'd probably get arrested for that, so do it twice.

  58. 58

Re: Canukian – Don't know what kind of money you make in Canada, but in Dubai they don't know what income tax and sales tax is. The fact is that ppl accept the restrictions in exchange for more $$$. You might become pessimistic about human nature but then what else is new? Money talks and in this case it talks Arabic and wears a dress.

  59. 59

hmm sounds a bit too strict for just a peck on the cheek but when you holiday somewhere part of the experience is living by the rules enforced there you don't need to start gettign off on eachother in a restaurant get a fucking room.

  60. 60

Re: Canukian – DEAR i dunno where did u got UR FACTS but they were not greeting if u dont kno anything just shut up!! they were doing inappropriate acts in public and as i said before if ppl dont respect the way we want to manage things here they can go somewhere else.. ppl like those r not welcomed …btw .. im not going 2 insult my self 2 comment on wat u hav said.. n i cn tell how well educated and liberal u r

  61. 61

  62. 62

Re: Roland33 – I forgot to mention that they also don't have labor laws or standards or minimum wage laws. Unions are banned so this means that if you make a modest income of say $60,000 a year you can hire an army of slave labor to do whatever you want. Say for $300 a month you could have a house slave to clean and cook for you. Standard of living increases incredible if you have the money. It's not so good if you are a poor Filipino,Pakistani or Indian.

  63. 63

Re: One_Night_Only – Well, obviously this BRITISH couple feels the same way. Yes, the world hates Americans…the French would be speaking German without us. The Brits too. We are such a terrible country. lol….

  64. 64

Re: jsqtsa – ummm a little respect please

  65. 65

This is a simple lesson for Americans, on account we are all Americans?, going to a foreign country is like being a guest in someone elses home. YOU BEHAVE YOURSELF! Why do americans think our rules supercede all others? This is why our ancestors have fought for this country, not the middle east, europe, asia, etc… If you go abroad, CHECK YOURSELF! Otherwise you only have yourself to blame.

  66. 66

I guess now the US doesn't sound so terrible with our feable causes of 'equality for all' People will always find something to bitch about, no matter where they are. Their country their rules. Get over it.

  67. 67

well, if you go there, respect their rules. but like i said, i don't know why anyone would WANT to vacation in such a strict place.. thought that was what vacation was about, to let loose and have some fun… dunno maybe that's just me. If it was a peck the arrest is ridiculous, but if it was groping and lewd sexual acts, then they deserve it, YUCK no one wants to see that, especially in family surroundings, save it for the strip clubs. PS people of dubai, whether from canada, usa, british countries, whatever, quit judging all americans, you sound just as ignorant when you call us all rednecks or immoral people…

  68. 68

1- that is impossible, im from Kuwait which has even more strict laws than the uae and a kiss on the cheek would not cause that sort of propaganda

2- "if you cant stand the heat, get out of the kitchen", that couple resided on islamic turf.. airgo: RESPECT our laws or dont visit our territories.. no body ASKED you to go to Dubai on vacation, you did so on your own terms

3- you can look down on us all that you want, bitches, we still have families who give two shits about us and would never kick us out, have moral compasses which we stand proudly by, and we have and make more money in one month than the average american sees in their entire lifetime :D so HAH! (and yes i am stooping down to your level by showing you the same ignorance that you yourselves show)

4- to the idiot who wrote the post about muslim women wearing headscarves in europe/australia offending him.. eat shit and die, you people salut a homo for coming out and being true to himself/herself, but when a muslim lady stays true to herself by committing to her religious obligations, suddenly you get offended. grow up you delusional hypocrite

  69. 69

Re: Roland33 – we also pay for our "slaves'" accommodations, healthcare, food, travel expenses (including their trips back home, and our vacations to europe + pocket money), we (muslims) also count them as part of our family and give them random amounts of money during holidays, festivities, eids, and other special occasions.
the $300-500 they receive from us is ALOT more than the money they would make working back in their home countries, and nobody is forcing them to come here, they need work, we provide them with jobs and THEN SOME. so shut your gob and educate yourself about these things before opening your mouth and saying something STOOPID, aight Bubba?

  70. 70

When in Rome,do as the Romans do.

  71. 71

the lesson here is that dubai does not want western tourism dollars. do NOT travel to dubai. if they want to enforce their draconian, retarded laws then let them and let them do it to their own people. fuck dubai.

  72. 72

Come on people, living outside of America is a good experience. The only things you need to remember when visiting or living in Dubai is this:

    1. No kissing/making out/ Sex in public- keep in Privacy of your own home.

    2. No drinking or acting a fool in public- again you can stay home and drink or go to hotel bar

    3. Don't dress like a whore- dress like a skank at home if you want.

That's it! Not so hard to make a few lifestyle changes when in another country. Living here has been a good experience and taught me a lot about other cultures. Peace

  73. 73

Re: gunnerbabe – You're clearly a patriotic person, which I appreciate - so why do you attack another country with your slanderous comments, on a website written and read by inhabitants of the country you're bitching about? You're not making any kind of point, you're just stirring shit.

"would never kick us out" - I'm sure they wouldn't, unless of course you were gay and decided you didn't want to live a life so false. It's disgusting that you can pride yourself on good morals while sitting back and accepting laws which mean these honest and confused individuals are arrested and given lashes and prejudiced against so strongly.

Also, I hardly think your generalisations constitute good morals. Your 'moral compass' is compromised, perhaps you should gtfo of this website, before the dysfunctional families and low incomes ruin your bigoted brain.

  74. 74

But they come into our country and rule it like it's theirs. A kiss? That is all? Damn.

  75. 75

Re: BeFairNice COMMENT and Comeback, And I am American btw! ;)

  76. 76

PEREZ it's getting pretty sad when you have to get the REAL STORY off your comments!! Do some fucking RESEARCH please!!

  77. 77

Re: housewifey#40 Wow, loved your comment too!! Now I want to move there! Ha-ha!

  78. 78

This incident just adds to the reason I have never have had or will have a desire to go anywhere near the Middle East

  79. 79

    oh my fucking god…..

  80. 80

Re: CherryLips – a) this has nothing to do with patriotism, "bigotry" from ppl like me is what sponge-brained ppl like YOU should be shown..because you flaunt the fact that your country constitutes all sorts of fake freedoms when you cant even accept other ppl's beliefs, laws, and lifestyles

    b) just because i insulted your people and their shallow-mindedness, it does not mean that i cannot visit an american website, because the websites i choose to enter is none of your business

  81. 81

Re: CherryLips – c) homosexuality is looked down upon in many religions, and not just islam. now, assuming you are an athiest and you do not stand by any sort of religious fellowship allow me to educate you about a common fact here in the middle east.. we would NOT kick out a person for being a homosexual, we would consort to numerous means of therapy to "de-homosexualize". i do not care how you feel about this because you are but a mere cow-shit in contrast with islam as a religion. d) if i feel like flaunting my assets, i can do so without your approval. and it is not my fault that you have to work 12 hours a day, seven days a week to buy some milk and a loaf of bread, while i attend college at my government's expense, come home to a different cuisine each day cooked by one of my 3 house-maids, drive to high-end boutiques in my beautiful BMW and shop without a care in the world, and have not 1, but three flats facing the gorgeous Costa del Sol beach in Spain :) and my friend, you are far from viable to judge my ignorance and morals here and now, because like any other proud arab muslim, it's only natural for me to get offended (similarly to how you felt about my comment, if not more) by the prejudice attacks that your fellow air-headed countrymen and women have launched just because they do not like another very noble country's rules and regulations.

  82. 82

Re: just say FUKK – hahaha you are sooo funnny!! Your comment shows your lake in knowledge. Do you seriously think Dubai’s economy is depending on the under $100 dollars tourist spend there every day during there 1 week visit or less Hahahahahahay I fell sorry for you. Wake up and get out of your bubble and start learning about the real world. Dubai’s rich economy is based on its rich natural sources that was invested in the smartest way possible by its leader Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid!! And FYI most foreigners go to Dubai seeking a better job “ with high VERY HIGH wages” so “NO” Dubai doesn’t need the foreigners, foreigners “NEED” Dubai, they go there seeking for a better living!!

  83. 83

Re: gunnerbabe – “means of therapy to "de-homosexualize"“ - As great as that sounds (I have mental images of some wack-job fool administering shock treatment, in all honesty), I will gladly live with the very real freedom I am lucky enough to have grown up with here in Scotland. (and no, not American here)

“i feel like flaunting my assets, i can do so without your approval.” - I actually didn’t say anything about your flaunting of assets. :) Why would I mock you for such a ostentatious show? I wouldn’t want to sway you from flaunting that one little bit of freedom you do have. I’m very glad you’re well-off. I, however, would take being able to go to the shop, with my head held high and my hair free and lovely, over the suffocation, and the oppression it symbolises, of your typical full-body covering ensembles. That, to me, is not liberation or freedom, it’s bordering fascism; hopefully, your material wealth will compensate.

Simply in accordance, I feel I must also educate you on conventions of my own country. University is paid for by the government here also; I do not have to work 12 hours a day, slaving for a loaf of bread or bottle of milk. Your assumptions about the Western world are wildly inaccurate, and, after telling this twice now, I feel you are a lost cause. Bye now.

  84. 84

Re: CherryLips – saying that you are from the UK truly shocks me, i just came back from england 2 weeks ago and walking the streets of london i have nothing but good things to say about the very acceptant people there. i am taken aback by how somebody from a land with such diverse communities can be so foolish as to "generalise", YOU are the one who seems to be on the generalisation band-wagon, not ALL muslim girls wear head scarves (hijabs) and are covered from head to toe. i salut those of us who have the courage to commit to islam's most common dress-code standards, however islam does not stand for oppression, it is

  85. 85

Re: CherryLips – actually a very peaceful religion with a beautiful message. the western media has portrayed us in horrendous ways, all you think of when you hear the world muslim is "bin laden..terrorism.. women with head-scarves.. kids throwing rocks at israeli troops.. oppression..", you so shamelessly base your judgements on stereotypes and misconstrue my people. did you even know that not all muslim women choose to cover up? or that we dont all hate jews and i (for one) find every jewish person i've met so far to be a decent individual. did you know that the people of the middle east are probably the most generous folks you'd ever meet? i suggest you visit a country other than the UAE and allow yourself the pleasure of being a guest in an arab muslim's home, maybe then the abstract image that you have about us would become more opaque and clear. and about homosexuals, just because we do not necessarily like the way they are does not mean we cannot get along with them, my favourite teacher in school was an Irish homosexual, and one of my closest family connections is to my gay cousin. dont allow stereotypes to get to you, you'd live life without any foreign-culture experiences.
