Spirit Airlines Is Lame!

| Filed under: Icky Icky PooBusiness Blitz

Spirit Airlines should be very proud for effing over the public! They are the first American airline to charge a fee for carry-on baggage!

Passengers will be able to bring a bag for free on board, but it must be smaller than the 16"x14"x12" size limit. All luggage stored in the overhead compartment will incur a fee startting at $20 and capping as high as $45.

Members of Spirit Airlines's $9 Fare Club (which includes a yearly fee of $39.95) will pay $20 for carry-on baggage and passengers who reserve a spot in the overhead bin in advance will be charged $30. Unlucky nonmembers who wait until they're at the gate to pay will be charged $45.

The airline insists that the new fee will allow the company to keep fares low by giving "customers the option of paying only for the services they want and use rather than subsidizing the choices of others."

    thats lame!

  2. 2

    Best Airline on the planet

  3. 3

that is one way to keep the airfare low.

  4. 4

Actually, they are being smart. Douchebag travelers in an effort to avoid checking bags are coming on board with more and more baggage and trying to jam it into the compartments. This delays boarding and causes untold inconvenience to those passengers with sense enough to just bring small personal bags aboard. Traveling by Air is becoming worse than a Greyhound Bus full of Hillbillies. People are rude, act entitled and make trips miserable for everyone else on the Plane.

  5. 5

fuck you spirit airlines. i can't even believe you still exist. remember that TEN HOUR flight we spent together from FLORIDA TO NEW YORK? good times.

  6. 6

Re: Scahootowl – I was on a flight that came into La Guardia in NYC last night and the plane was full of idiots trying to jam all their shit in their carry-on luggage. The woman at the gate kept scolding the rest of us in line (mind you we all had 2 or less carry-on bags) because the previous borders (first and business class losers) lied and carried 3 and 4 bags on the plane. By the time 1/2 the plane was loaded, only 3 overhead compartments were left. Yes, 3! So I think it's smart. Better than tacking on that extra $45 on the price of the ticket. When we landed, the 1st class compartments were half empty (guess rich people's bags need "space" around them) and were obviously closed before they were filled. Don't want poor people's bags touching yours now…

  7. 7

Who the fuck flies this airline anyway???

Bravo! I am sick of giving up my carry-on space to hooners who refuse to check their giant suitcases. They're putting my life in danger, because the big bags don't stay in the compartment if there's turbulence.

  9. 9

Well guess I'm done flying spirit. Shitty.

  10. 10

it is NOT bs first b/c of what others have already stated that idiots will try & cram all their luggage into 1 ginormous bag & crowd everyone else on the plane.
second & most important, did you know spirit has specials that allow you to fly for a penny? yeah. so 20 bucks for luggage? not that big of a deal.

  11. LAgal says – reply to this

More airlines should do this. I've seen some dumbass people with full-size luggage board the planes and try to squeeze that shit up in the compartments. Maybe this will finally stop.

  12. LAgal says – reply to this

By the way, I've flown on Spirit and they are great! They are onto something.

Stop bringing your big ass luggage on the planes and maybe there won't be fees.

  13. 13

    What a load of crap.

Which is really obnoxious, but the airline was wrong to let them on the plane with all of the bags. A real airline would not have allowed it.

  16. 16

    American Airlines charges as well.

  17. 17

That's why I am trying to lose another 10 pounds, because bitches, that is the next one for the airlines: we are going to we weighed like good ol' cattle before boarding!

  18. 18

Actually, this blog post is lame. Their tickets are cheaper than most, and with how crowded airplanes already are who the hell really needs to have something with them that cannot fit under their seat? Between the time it takes most people to cram crap in the overhead compartments and then later take forever to get their stuff back out, the inconvenience caused to smarter traveler's should be charged.

  19. 19

Re: stellagranos – Hahaha…yeah…it was annoying and unprofessional. I don't mind placing my bag only in the coach section but the first class section was half empty so why in the hell did all their luggage not fit? LOL.

  20. 20

PEREZ, GET OVER YOURSELF! Ever heard of RYANAIR? They fly in Europe and have been for years. You can often find a sale flight for 5Pounds plus tax from England to Poland or Germany… all over Europe… AND IT IS BECAUSE THEY CHARGE FOR EVERYTHING EXTRA. It's awasome, and I wish we had that here in North America. And the reason we don't have it here yet, is because of douches like you, who bitch and complain about everything. Go Spirit Air!

  21. 21

It's good if they actually keep their fares low. I totally agree about people trying to sneak or cram huge non-carryon bags into overhead bins. I've seen people bring full size suitcases and then "gate-check" because suprise! they don't fit! People do it as a ruse to avoid paying checked bag fees.

However it seems like most airlines are charging fees for everything and fares do not stay low, prices just keep going up and up. If Spirit can actually keep their fares low or even lower them and just move to this a la carte model, I'd be impressed

  22. 22

I flew American Airlines and U.S. Airways last week when I was heading to Cali for my spring break and I got charged a $25 fee right before I got on the plane because there was no more room in the cabins for my bag, so they had to "valet" check it.

  23. 23

Simple. I'd rather give my money to the ole USPS, UPS or Fedex, than these airlines that cram seats on top of each other and charge for water. I will be sending my clothes through one of those services from now on. Even if it costs more than $20, which I feel sure it won't, it's worth it to me not to give it to the airlines.

  24. 24

That is so retarded. Even Delta only charges $25 for the first bag then $35 for every bag after. So why is this airline charging for a overhead bag long enough charging so much? Dicks!

  25. 25

Hey! This is happening for years in Europe with Easy jet and Ryan Air ( flying from little airports outside the big towns). Get real! the only good thing from this is that it's pretty cheap (Paris-Barcelona: 50 euros, VAT included +9 euros for exta luggage). This is crisis! get real!

  26. Bree says – reply to this

Dont think its a bad idea, but price could still be cheaper.

Worst is Ryanair in Europe, which as just announced its charging 1 pound to use the toilet!

  27. 27

That's dumb! Gosh, they charge for everything now a days. I hope this does not become a trend.

  28. 28

Instead of charging they need to reinforce baggage limits on flights. Make people check extra bags instead of letting them on with 3 or 4 bags. At the rate they are goig they will be strapping people on the wings.

  29. 29

I'm curious why everyone bitches so much about baggage fees??? It's not like airlines were the only industry to inflate costs in some way—and I'm sure the majority of the bitching comes from people who rarely fly so stfu already!

  30. 30

    Re: Scahootowl

  31. 31

Thank God. I'm so sick oh having to wait an extra 15 minutes to get on and off the plane just because of all the morons that decided to do carry ons. Plus the idiots who hit you as they are swinging their heavy ass bags over top of your compartment space. God I fucking hate carry ons.

  32. 32

i thought the only good thing about capitalism is that the customer is king & we get cheap prices because of the price war?

  33. 33

Worst airline ever. You get what you pay for..nadda. They lost my luggage, in that, it never left NYC. Had to buy all new stuff in Mexico, called airline every day of vacation to find luggage and got no answers. Came home to find luggage sitting in a random area of JFK. Filed the expense report of all the clothing and toiletry expenses we incured. They paid my cousin back but not me..when I would call to inquire they would give the run around and thus never got refunded $300. I paid to buy clothes and toiletries. Check the web they are notoriously the most craptastic airline in the biz…spend a lil extra for an airline that gives a crap about its customers.

  34. 34

It's going to be cheaper to mail your clothes to your destination ahead of time if it's a planned trip.

  35. 35

First of all, everybody who is bitching about the time it takes to deplane because of other people's bags, you are effing retards. If you're a frequent traveler, you know it's all about the 'carry on.' You basically, can't live without it, and saves a ton of time if you're on a day-trip or a short overnight.

Secondly, most airlines have a size restriction on baggage, which is 22" to 24". Unless, you're completely inept in using the Internet, I suggest you get online and look up the size of the bag that you're allowed to 'carry on.' That way, you won't look like douche when you show up at the airport with a bag the size of a miniature horse.

And finally, people are assholes when they get to the airport, because now-a-days, they expect to be treated like an asshole. The gate agents are generally dicks, there's nobody to help you should you have a question, the lines are long and you're about to be crammed in a metal tube, shot in the air at around 500mph, and forced to sit next to a screaming baby or 'oversized individual' for the next 2-4 hours. I married a pilot, and even I think flying sucks. I also think Spirit Airlines sucks for imposing costs on a BASIC NECESSITY of air travel. Let's just add this little, 'Thanks For Flying' from Spirit Airlines, to the crap economy, the growing unemployment rate, the high gas prices, the continuing war in Iraq/Afghanistan, the new Healthcare bill and our overall sense of doom. Yippie!

  37. 37

I totally agree with this. Do you know how frustrating it is to see these people with their gi-normous carry on pull-suit cases! I bring my little backpack and camera case and throw it under my seat. Meanwhile, everyone else is dropping bags on my head from the overhead compartment and trying to stuff them in a space that is too small. Half of those bags should have been checked in the first place!

  38. 38

I work for spirit and im so fucking sick of these dumb ass fuc*@!g Pax coming on board and taking up all the space in the Overhead Bins, "dude your fu*&@g flying spirit airlines ,what the f*#&$k do you expect broke people, go fly American Airlines or Virgin America if you want real service!" I mean we are the only ultra low airline in the Americas what the F do you expect from us and what does that tell you about us.? You should be lucky we get you there, due to the fact that our planes don't rest at all there on the ground for 30 min and there back up in the air 24 hours! I wish you Bi*#&@ stop F complaining and go F yourself and safe travel to where ever your final destination may take you and dont come back nasty ass wet backs !!!!!!!!!!

  39. 39

Yeah Ryan does it and others for bags under the plane , but think abotu it there paying a bag handler to put these things on the plane for you ! this time you are paying us and you do all the work what total ass you are ! Im not helping you put shit up A !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And please come in smelling good you dame wet backs i end up havign to spray the whole plane stink ass

  40. 40

Re: MCBacardi – Dumb ass you should of asked to speak to a manager , people like you that dont stand up ! we take your money , If there is no more space in the overhead you should not have to PAY duah , inside tip for your next flight , you where probably mexican

  41. 41

IF i was being paid the pound i would have no problem , hey a holes do the price check at ryanair.com and you will see they do charge everything but for an average of 40 to 60 pounds round trip that includes tax and they do not charge for the overhead bin!!!!!!!!!!!

  42. 42

Yeah, I'll never fly on their airline….

  43. 43

airfare low my ass. They'll probably keep it the same and make more money. that's soooooo gay! I understand it's annoying when people bring a huge carry on onto the plane… but they did that when they started charging for checked luggage.

  44. 44

I hope they choke on those fees and go bankrupt in the process. The public has had enough of this bull shit. I know I have had enough. I'd rather travel by car anyway. Hate flying

  45. 45

I have mixed feelings about this. I flew Spirit Air on the way to a cruise in early March and on the return flight home. Spirit Air boasts that they can provide cheap flights because they are a no-frills airline. It's basically an ala-carte menu. You pick and choose what your experience will be like. In other words, if you want a snack in-flight, etc. . .

I have to applaud Spirit Air for their staff. Upon our return flight home, we hit terrible tail winds (apx 140mph) that was pushing the airplane BACKWARDS. We looped between Philadelphia and LaGuardia for over an hour in horrible turbulence, so bad that the entire plane thought we were going to crash. Our pilot ignored Air Traffic Control's encouragement to land in LaGuardia with wind sheers and ZERO visibility. He stated that the people on board were more valuable than the fine he would face by landing in Philadelphia, where Spirit doesn't have a terminal. I heard this, because I was sitting right next to the back of the plane near the flight attendants. While we sat on the tarmac, the flight attendants, including one not on duty, passed out free water and snacks. They paid for the entire plane to take a bus back to NYC and a hotel and transportation for those who planned on staying overnight in Philly.

A pilot friend of mine later told me exactly how close we were to dying. So if you ask my opinion; an extra $20 is worth it knowing that the pilot and staff valued the people flying Spirit Air.

  46. 46

As a flight attendant, I have been threatened on numerous occasions by passengers who bring on luggage too large for the bins. I ask them politely to check it because of it's size, and now I'm the bad guy for doing my job. I've been yelled at and shoved, amongst other things, and it's getting old. I'm also tired of seeing ADULTS getting into physical fights over bin space! If whatever is so important to you can't fit in a 24" space, find another way to get it where it needs to go. Start checking your luggage instead of your brains. And leave your sense of entitlement at home.
