Just wanted to say that as a Persian/Iranian - American individual, I agree with most of the factual things that other Persians are posting.
Just wanted to add that Persians are among some of the HARDEST WORKING people you'll find, and their story is truely one of the American Dream. Many had to leave behind everything (their property, money, home) in Iran to come to the USA during the Islamic Revolution. They had to start a life for themselves from the bottom-up, and through hard work and perserverence, many Persians have practically gone from rags to riches. Most Persians I know are Doctors, Lawyers, successful businessmen and women.
Also, Persians are one of the MOST EDUCATED cultural groups around - education is very important to us - a college degree is a must, and many of us go on to graduate school. Third, Persians are among the most hospitable, giving, and generous people I have ever met. If you were ever invited for dinner or tea to a Persian's house, you will know what I'm talking about. We are also known to "taarof" or fight over the bill when going out to eat with our friends.
Persians have a rich culture, and are very family-oriented individuals. There are a subset of Persians who are materialistic and into showing off their purchases (i.e. those who live the Beverly Hills livestyle). Persians have many more things to celebrate than their wealth, so I think MTV is being a little stereotypical for wanting to showcase people who fit that stereotype.
Regardless, know that Persians are NOT terrorists, they are peaceful, warm, caring people. And modern-day Iranians are VERY MUCH LIKE YOU AND I - AMERICANS. Those living in Iran are fighting against the suppressive fundamentalist regime, they are fighting for CIVIL RIGHTS and FREEDOM FROM OPPRESSION by the Iranian government (which was unlawfully brought to place in this rigged election). Modern day Iranians are fighting for AMERICAN CIVIL RIGHTS AND LIBERTIES - things that we take for granted. Think twice before saying something condescending about Persians. Besides, us living in the USA consider ourselves "American," above all else.
The majority of us were born here anyhow. And just FYI - most of the Persians living in LA are Jewish, not Muslim or Zoroastrian. Sounds like a contradiction, huh?? Persian/Iranian AND Jewish?? Well that's what the majority of us are. Above all, we are American.

Re: TP Kirkland – Of course the persian empire does not exist, what you need to understand is the word "persian" refering to Iranian-Americans was adapted by people mostly who fleed to America after the Iranian revolution in order to escape persecution; although it was not a correct term, it was a way of people who were followers of the shah before the revolution to disattach themselves from the current policatical situation. Also the word "Persian" is usually used more by people who have iranian parents or grandparents, but were born and/or raised in America themselves. Its a slang word, people use slang words all the time….don't take it so literally.

Actually to the Afghan, half of Afghanistan (Tajiks, hazaras, farsiwans) consists of ethnic Persians. Persians are a huge group (120 million strong) through out the world with 3 Persian speaking countries (Tajikistan, Iran and Afghanistan).
Persian doesn't only refer to Iranians, that would be like saying Iraqis are the only Arabs in the world. Persian is both an ethnicity (Iranians are Persian) and a nationality, Iranian no matter their background can be called Persian because the nation still to this day has two names in use (Persia and Iran).
