Portugal Might Soon Allow Gay Marriage!

Filed under: Gay Gay Gay > Politik

As we mentioned earlier this year, it seems Portugal might soon become the sixth European country to allow same-sex marriage!

Back in January, their Parliament passed a gay marriage bill with the support from their left-of-center parties.

And in even better news, this past Thursday, Portugal's highest court ruled that the proposed law should be enacted!

This now leaves only their conservative President Anibal Cavaco Silva, who has the power to ratify or veto, to decide within the next 20 days.

The president's signature is the final step before their country can be free to have the equal rights they all deserve!

It's not quite the same shin-dig when a country like Portugal opts to go with the flow of societal evolution … than when Canada, for example, opted for the evolution of the definition of marriage.
Portugal's the P in PIIGS doncha know !!

Good. And when they do allow gay marriage why don't you move there?

    3. 3

      Who cares?

Re: mcgavock – Most gay people care, mcgavock. Equal rights in society are a big deal to these people. Go figure.

    5. 5

Or as they like to be called, Portugays.

Soon the United States will be joining only the extremist Muslim countries in prohibiting gays to get married. Even very conservative Nepal is considering extending marriage to gay people. Can't live like it's 1958 forever, ya know?

    7. 7

Ok, I'm Portuguese and I'm gonna try to ignore the P in Pigs commentary or the Portugays one and just say that this IS a big deal for our country. We're talking about a very, very conservative country that's still stuck in the past. So it is a big deal.

And lets give Mexico props, congrats to Mexico City for allowing gay marriage and gay adoption rights, despite it being a very Catholic country! Puts Texas where I live to shame :(

I found it funny that this post follows right after Tiger and Elins seperate vacay post. How mario's sister questions their marriage then follows it up with this post. It doesn't flow well and might give ppl another reason why we gays shouldn't get married.

    10. 10

ok, so, if your minds just CANNOT understand that the world is starting to become a fairer place, why do you even bother coming here??
and sure, i understand that your religion doesn't approve gay marriage, but you know what? I'm a christian myself, and i DO BELIEVE that we are all equal. everyone has the same duties, therefore, the same rights.
love doesn't choose gender or race or age or whatever! love is love you bunch of hypocrites!
it doesn't harm you if they get married, you bunch of sellfish basterds who don't care about other people's happiness!

    11. 11

and you guys can go f*** yourselves, if you want to talk shit, talk shit about your country and NOT about MINE

Although the government allowed it, 70% of the population disagreed. Of course its the opposite here. Portguese people are stuck in their ways and even if this gets fully approved, it may not be as big as here because thats just not the culture there. People are gay but its not what it is here. My family is from Lisbon and i go every year and theres one official gay bar with a handful of gay men (it was fabulous of course)

    13. 13

And the sixth European country to make it look like the US is in the stone age! Way to go Portugal!

    14. 14

      too much freedom too much

    15. 15

good grace if it will happen.. i know they are conservative and classic but I thik their being open minded well take it all…

    16. 16

I'd like to see catholic Poland or Russia allowing gay marriage before the USA does…. then you know you're fucked! haha

    17. 17

i like mcgavock's statement to be honest

Im sick of all the gay talk on this site

or more so im sick of the way people react to gay people
i know a couple of gay cats…that's fine with me whatever
its kind of dumb that people criticize and try to decided what is best for someone who may have a different sexual preferance

    18. 18

      EWWW DONT DO IT PORTUGUESE!!!

    19. 19

It's funny how my country (Portugal BTW) is almost in the financial situation of Greece and our politics are more interested in gay marriage. Seriously nothing against gay marriage but this is not the time for this!

      To Cat P;
I'm a Californian, formerly Bostonian living in Lisbon, Portugal.
I don't know when was the last time you visited Lisbon but it sure must have been decades ago. People are conservative and reserved, but they respect each other. In the last 2 elections the opposition tried to make an issue iimplying the Prime Minister is gay, a reocurring supposedly secret and the press and everyone responded simply by saying it was not a political issue.
A major poll, contrary to your 70%, showed people approved the law by 52%. The opponents managed one demonstration with less than 5,000 in a metropolitan area of over 3 million. Also, the Gay bars and establishments are plenty, including baths (saunas). You must have been under a rock when you last visited.
Also, for anyone's information, if the President vetoes the law, the Parliament will pass it again and override the veto with a simple majority. They have promised it!

    21. 21

First of all, nice to see some Portuguese around here!

I'm Portuguese and yes, I do agree that Portugal is a conservative country. But changing mentalities takes time and approving gay marriage is a huge step forward to achieving that. I just don't understand why some people fight so fiercely against it

    22. 22

Re: Cat P – sorry but you know NOTHING about Portugal.
It's not a big deal here, because people simply can't give two fucks about whatever other people want to do! The opinions were 50-50 in a poll but we all know how polls go here.

As for the closed-minded twats calling people portugays and going about making HILAAAAAAAAAAARIOUS comments about PIIGS (seriously, I'm about to blow my trousers off in amusement), I hope someone close to you, who you really love turns out to be gay! Maybe then you'll see how important it is to help others find their happiness! Maybe one day THEY will be the ones who have to help YOU!

      I agree with Leonard.
This proves you guys have no idea of ehat Portugal is like. I am Portuguese and I actully don't find Portugal as conservative as you think. It is indeed predominantly Catholic but religion and conservatism aren't quite the same.

When our Prime Minister announced he would battle along with gay people for their rights, Catholic church expressed their oppinion and said they were against it. Our government's aswer was that what was under debate was the legalisation of CIVIL marriage, not RELIGIOUS marriage, therefor a political issue, not a religious one. This was enough foi Catholic church to back off and say "let politicians decide politics".

Those 5,000 opponents of gay marriage came nation-wide. In a country with 10million ppl, only 5,000 decided to go out in the streets, which is 1/2000 of the population… and they came from rural areas (let me tell you that over 55% of the portuguese population live in Lisbon and Porto's metropolitan areas). gay bars are crowded either in Lisbon, Porto and Algarve. Straight ppl goes to those bars and clubs and there is a healthy co-existence. It's not perfect, I know, there are rural areas where it's complicated to come out… but you guys have Texas as well.

For you guys who think Portugual is like a 3rd-world country, come over here this summer, I'm sure you'll be surprised

Re: Leonard – My goodness. Intelligent insight. A novelty on this site!

      Re: ShoeWhore

ShoeWhore, you ninny, are you suggesting that rights are only valid when they are administered from your sanctioned list deserving countries? lmao. First of all, I live in Canada, and let me tell you, there are places in this country that are on par with many third world countries I've visited. I'm talking about rundown neighborhoods in big cities, as well as those in smaller towns, many of which are rundown and poor. Many people in this great nation still live in shacks, a multitude of them can sometimes afford a trailer. And I'm not even talking about the living conditions of the Aboriginal communities, that's something altogether 5th world. One last thing, Canada's economy is hinged on the U.S economy, and if that debt ridden nations economy goes by-by, so does Canada's, we'll talk about economic ineptitude then.

Re: efletcher – I agree with you and Leonard. European conservatism is different than US conservatism. Our German Secretary of State is gay. When he travels he regularly takes his partner with him and the only thing that's discussed is if his partner pays for the trips. LOL

    27. 27

ShoeWhore just go suck on some stiletto heels. And portugal is not as conservative as it is traditional. It's really quite diferent.

    28. 28

Re: Barrie – I was shocked about the bad condition many houses in Canada were in. Sometimes I felt like I was in the 19th century… and I'm not talking about rural areas.

    29. 29

I am a Portuguese American who happens to know what's going on in Portugal and is there often. Portugal is a conservative country, but we think forward compare to alot of other countries. We accept people for who they are. We treat people with respect and dignity. We don't mistreat or abuse people, unlike many others here are doing. It's unfortunate we have individual like you in society, who don't have the same values like us. I have faith that one day there will be hope for you.
