Carlsberg Workers Strike Because They Can No Longer Drink On The Job

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & True

Workers from Carlsberg brewery in Amsterdam walked out on Thursday because of newly enforced rules on workplace drinking leading to the removal of beer coolers from work sites.

The company's new alcohol policy allow them to drink beer only during lunch at the canteen. They used to be able to drink throughout the day from coolers provided by the bosses.

The warehouse and production workers in Denmark are rebelling against the company's new alcohol policy, which allows them to drink beer only during lunch hours in the canteen. Previously, they could help themselves to beer throughout the day, from coolers placed around the work sites.

The only restriction was "that you could not be drunk at work. It was up to each and everyone to be responsible," said company spokesman Jens Bekke.

Although the company had thought about changing their policy for years, they finally imposed the new rules on April 1st. It caused 800 workers to strike and 250 to walk off their jobs.

And the truck drivers even joined in for support even though they are immune to the rules! They are allowed to bring three beers from the canteen because they often don't have time to have lunch there.

But don't fear, the trucks have alcohol ignition locks that prevent the drivers from driving drunk.

WOW! Leave it to the Dutch.

    I wish I worked there.

  2. 2

    Danish, not Dutch.

  3. 3

The Carlsberg brewery is in Copenhagen, Denmark.

(and this is by far not the only brewery where workers are allowed to drink during shifts)

  4. 4

Wow, I can't even imagine anything like that…coolers of beer for you to drink throughout the day. How did they get anything done?

  5. 5

The brewery is in Amsterdam,Holland. Carlsberg is from Denmark.

I think they should ban beer at the workplace. I don`t think it's normal to drink beer when you are working! So I agree with Carlsberg.

  6. 6

    carlsberg is danish!!!

so amsterdam in this case should be copenhagen

  7. 7

Hey, we are Danes! Not from Holland..

  8. 8

LUCKY they had it for all these years. don't know health benefit situation for Amsterdam or why they did it. hmmm. Where they drinking away the profits or do the workers need some sort of worker's compenstation ’cause they all need early retirement because they all develop cirrohsis of the liver? Are driving home drunk and causing lawsuits for the company? If the comp. does pay for healthcare, it is gone up because of the effects of heavy drinking on the body? just so many to chose from……hmmm I CHOOSE #1-THE PROFITS ARE BEING DRUNK AWAY, SINCE THEY LET THEM DRINK AT LUNCH. Now these workers probably just have liquid lunches. Wonder what the company got away with paying these workers before? (we pay below min. wage- $1.50 an hour but it is made up with all the beer you can drink all day. 'l'll start now' ) Probably the first walkout they have had.

Hey, Loving Perez………….But now you really need to revisit highschool

Carsberg is DANISH!!!!!!!!!!!!! And their factory is situated in Kopenhagen, DENMARK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Idiot….. Check before you post.

So don't leave it up to the Dutch….

HEINEKEN is dutch though. Much better.

And we are the first ones in the world to legalize gay marriage..

  10. 10

Carlsberg workers in Copenhagen are on strike.
    Copenhagen is in DENMARK.
Amsterdam is in The Netherlands. The Netherlands is also called Holland, and the people there are called Dutch.
People from Denmark are called Danes.
Why are Americans so terrible at geography?

  11. 11

    1. Carlsberg is brewed in Copenhagen, Denmark
    2. Danish, not Dutch

  12. 12

Also one of the more redundant things I've read in awhile.

  13. 13

It's produced in Copenhagen. So they're Danish, not Dutch.

Amsterdam would be Dutch, but it's also in the Netherlands, not Denmark.

  14. 14

    You need two
    A dictionary
    and an atlas.
    Bet ya know
    off the top of your
    head how much
    an ounce of coke
    is going for tho.

  15. 15

Leave it to the DANES, not the Dutch… way to make us (Americans) look stupid!?!

  16. 16

I like how the third paragraph is really paraphrased from the first two. Guess someone forgot to take the original writing out haha!

  17. 17

Americans are indeed horrible at geography. I remember watching the Family Feud a few years ago… the questions was: "name a middle eastern country"… one guy answered "Argentina"!!! lol… or remember Miss South Carolina… "some people in our nation don't have maps"!…. hehe

  18. 18

Worst written article I've seen for a while…

  19. 19

Time to study a Map of the World…

  20. 20

First on the geography score it amazes me how Americans always think we are the best in the world at everything and we have no clue on so many things it is down right sickening. Really, how many of our people so clueless it is amazing.

Secondly, did it ever dawn on some of the self righteous people in here that were flipping out on how anyone could get anything done, or how they didn't develop cirrhosis that not everyone, or maybe any of them were drunk all the time, or ever drank lots? That seems to be a big US issue. Some countries don't have drinking ages and they have less of an issue than we do just because of that very thing. they let their kids drink wine with dinner, and they don't think it is such a big deal. Also tylenol which seems to be in everything anymore is really hard on the liver too. So these people might not have been so bombed at work as you think, and maybe some of them were, but who knows? I wish I worked there. Good for them anyway.

  21. 21

Remove the tag for amsterdam - the dutch make heineken & bavaria!

Bloody americans - this is basic geography.

even fox managed to get the facts right, for once!

  22. 22

hehe…I'm American and have to look at the map for those countries to remember where each one is located. And the original article didn't even mention Amsterdam. So the mistake is really a matter of copying.

  23. 23

Copenhagen, not Amsterdam! Danish, not Dutch!
even the article linked to has it right, P!

  24. 24

Like others before me I would like to point out that his happened in Copenhagen, NOT Amsterdam! And that you love the Danish people, not that Dutch…. People that are Dutch come from Holland/ the Netherlands. People that are Danish are from Denmark!

  25. 25

Oh Perez! I don't know where you got Amsterdam in all of this, but the actual Carlsberg brewery in question is in HOJE-TAASTRUP, Denmark, a suburb of Copenhagen (according to the Wall Street Journal).

    Having said that, Holy-wanting-to-move-to-Denmark, Batman!

My favourite part of the story is when the workers claim that only drinking at lunch is actually MORE unsafe, because if you have 3 beers at lunch it will affect your job performance, so it's better to spread those out throughout the day!

  26. 26

Hmm but then again, from where would Claire Danes be? Always thought she was from Holland!

  27. 27

They must have had it pretty good to srike or walk off without fear of losing their jobs. Pretty spoiled IMO to strike because they can't drink on all day on the job. Maybe getting fired or losing a few jobs would get themo realize that it's petty. There are plenty of americans here who need a job..maybe they'll be willing to move over there

  28. 28

Free alcohol at my company would result in nasty, smelly co-workers feeling you up and a ton of lawsuits.

  29. 29

So they got to drink on the job AND had the backing of their union when it became verboten to do so. WOW. Cry me a fucking river …

  30. 30

Re: VeganVal – To me it's all the same over there.

  31. 31

What! I had co-workers rat me out for having a beer @ lunch. Where can I get a plane ticket to Amsterdam already?!

  32. 32

Umm… "Amsterdam," "Denmark," and "Dutch?" Get your countries straight! Lol.

  33. 33

Wish I could work there.. then again my dad drinks on the job and makes bundles. Works for him!

  34. 34

Wow.. Major attack.. As a dane, I just wanted to comment:)
The danes working in the breweries are not paid less, just because they can drink during work. They have a lot of benefits.
There are also free soft drinks available at all times, just as with beer.
Just as a funny fact, the Carlsberg beer is apparantly not only brewed in Høje Taastrup and Fredericia, but also in a variety of other countries, including Holland. But please remember next time:)

  35. 35

I wish I live in a country or on a continent where being drunk all the time was doable and acceptable. Why do you think nations like America and Japan do so well? For the majority of people in these nations living life in a drunken haze is not morally acceptable. Let them be drunk, good for them.

  36. 36

K, reread what you write before you post it so you don't repeat yourself. The second and third paragraphs say the same thing.

  37. 37

My father is Danish and I lived there for while. They have a completely different view to alcohol than the us. So them drinking beers through out the day means they do it responsibly while at work. Its part of their culture and very dear to them. So let them strike!

  38. 38

Re: missymoome – Bavaria is a region in Southern Germany, NOT in Holland. I swear could the Americans be any dumber when it comes to knowing geography? HERE IS A RUN DOWN: BECKS AND LOWENBRAU ARE GERMAN BEERS, HEINEKEN IS DUTCH, AND CARLSBERG IS FROM DENMARK WHERE THE DANES LIVE. OH, AND BY THE WAY, HOLLAND, THE NETHERLANDS AND DUTCH, IS ALL THE SAME!

  39. Faux says – reply to this

Did you copy paste two bits but forgot to remove one? Hah, this site is sooo in decline.

  40. Lucas says – reply to this

Not to get OT, but the italians often take looonnnngggg lunches and drink red wine for lunch, then go back to work. I wouldn't mind that kind of lifestyle (only cuz I hate beer). :)

  41. @v@ says – reply to this

Worker's reaction sounds like withdrawel to me. Lunch beer should be enough for anyone.

  42. 42

This is exactly why Europeans hate Anericans so often!.Not even having the decency to check where Damark or Holland is or it´s capital. Ignorant idiots, dontacha guys learn anything at school?.Amsterdam is a city in Holland and we dont need the Carlsberg pissbeer. We have our own worldfamous "Heineken" and even better "Grolsch".It would be the same if we´d post about "Vancouver, the hottest town in Wyoming" or something.Ah well, Perez, a dude who couldnt find a real job..

  43. 43

  44. 44

I normally hold my tongue about this kind of stuff, but can you really not afford an editor for these posts? I realize you're probably too busy to check over spelling, grammar, content, etc. but come on. I recommend myself. :)

  45. 45

Ha Ha, I love how worked up people are getting about this! It's an April fools joke! Perez just seems to have posted it 9 days late.

  46. 46

Re: missymoome – And don't forget Grolsch! So much better than Heineken ;)

  47. 47

Re: mcgavock – Thanks for attributing to the stereotype that quite a few Americans are dumb :)
Re: krisswede – Bavaria IS a Dutch beerbrand, you shouting troll. The brewery was founded in 1719. Just because it's a region somewhere in the world doesn't mean it can't anything else. Guess you're the dumb one.

  48. 48

eehh…Amsterdam is in Holland. In Holland they speak Dutch, in Denmark they speak Danish. Carlsberg is Danish…end of Geography lesson!
