Creators Of South Park Get Mormon For Broadway!

This is going to EFFING RIDICULOUS.

We can't wait!!

The brilliant creators of South Park, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, have always infused their hysterical comedy series with musical numbers and songs, so it's no surprise that they've been working on a stage musical, but one based on the Mormon faith?!

Apparently so!

The team has collaborated with Avenue Q creator Robert Lopez, director Jason Moore and producers Scott Rudin and Anne Garefino on The Book of Mormon, which will revolve around two Mormon missionaries attempting to spread their faith in Uganda, interwoven with the story of Mormon founder Joseph Smith!

WTF?? We know!

But for all the Mormons in the world whose hearts just stopped, you can relax for the most part - despite their usual dose of political incorrectness and satire, the HIGHlarious writers have no ill will for the faith!

Stone asserts that none of their work, especially South Park, would never work "if it didn't have a heart."

"We learned a long time ago that if something is cynical just for the sake of being cynical, it won't last too long."

Parker agrees:

"There's a lot of Mormon stuff in our work because Matt and I both grew up around a lot of Mormons. I've never met a Mormon I didn't like. They're really nice people. They're so Disney. They're so Rodgers and Hammerstein. We're bigger authorities on The Book of Mormon than most Mormons. Broadway is big and scary to us. And by no means are we coming in to kick Broadway's ass. We're pretty sure we're going to get our asses kicked. But Bobby and Scott and Jason have a lot of the theater experience, so with their help, maybe we won't fall flat on our faces."

As bizarre as the concept is, we're confident that these guys will pull it off! They've got a great team assembled and rarely miss their mark.

What do U think?? Are U excited for The Book of Mormon??

  4. 4

YES!! there better be a least a little political incorrectedness in it

  5. 5

I am Mormon and I'm not really sure what to think about this. I highly doubt they are bigger experts on the Book of Mormon than a Mormon

I'm Mormon, and to be honest, I like South Park, I didn't like the South Park episode of All About The Mormons, but I did find the humor in it. I laugh at Mormon jokes all the time, and I get the humor in Missionary work, doing a Mission myself. So who knows, as long as the Church doesn't ban it, or as long as its not offensive to LDS people, I doubt these guys know more about the Book of Mormon then I do though.

Oh man, this is great. Some of the best Broadway comes from comedians.
And if I were a Mormon, I wouldn't worry. There might be some jabs and laughter, but those two actually really do love the principles and behavior of Mormonism. And hey, speaking as a Catholic, they did an episode where the Virgin Mary shat blood on the Pope's face and we're still standing.

  9. 9

Ha! What a hilarious concept! These guys really are comic geniuses.

  10. 10

    Ah, different.

I can't wait! I loved Orgazmo, Cannibal the Musical and their other non-Southpark stuff!

  12. 12

    no.

  13. 13

Reminds of me of the mormon episode. DUM-DUM-DUM-DUUUM

  14. 14

I'm Mormon, and a big South Park fan. I think it'll be awesome!! I can't wait! (and I actually think one or both of them *were* Mormon at one time…. but are no longer active members.)

  15. 15

    Watch Orgasmo, idiot.

  16. 16

I grew up in the same county as these two and in my personal opinion they truely are masters of the english language. They are genius when it comes to polotics and humour.

  17. 17

    haha mormons rule

  18. 18

They have parodied the Mormons before. Has anyone seen the hilarious Orgasmo?

I went to a read through this past summer - no cosutmes, set etc. and it was AMAZING! I'm so happy that its coming to broadway. To the Mormon folk, it is a realllly good story that although pokes fun has a very genuine happy ending. I hope it does big things!

Sounds like they are getting on the Roseanne Barr bus and taking cheap shots at Mormons.

    How about a rabbi musical?

  21. 21

as a fellow mormon, i am excited about this. it just good fun, i know its hard to believe but even mormons know how to laugh at themselves. besides maybe if will have some investigating the book a little further.

should be funny. if you can't laugh at yourself, then you can't laugh at anything else. they were in fact both raised mormon, but then ex-communicated. i'm sure most mormon officials don't think it's appropriate, but that's to be expected. they poke fun at MANY things, ideas, religions, and everything else.
