Phil Collins Ca$hes In, Does Covers Of Motown Instead Of Original Material On New Album

| Filed under: Music MinuteSuper Seniors

Ugh. Did you get this shiteous inspired idea from Rod Stewart's foray into soul??

Those excited to hear some original material on Phil Collins' next album are going to be sorely disappointed, because the legend is only doing covers of soul songs!

Even more disappointing about his Motown tribute Going Back is that he's not even trying to make the songs fresh or reimagined!

He says:

"It shouldn't really be a surprise to anyone that I've finally made an album of my favourite Motown songs. These songs, along with a couple of Dusty Springfield tracks, a Phil Spector/Ronettes tune, and one by the Impressions, make up the tapestry, the backdrop, of my teenage years. I remember it as if it was yesterday, going to the Marquee Club in London's Soho and watching The Who, The Action, and many others, playing these songs. In turn I'd go out the next day to buy the original versions. My idea, though, was not to bring anything new to these already great records, but to try to recreate the sounds and feelings that I had when I first heard them. There was one moment when they were tracking (Martha Reeves & The Vandellas hit) Heat Wave that I experienced a wave of happiness and wonder that this was actually happening to me."

All right, we respect that you really love the music and want to take a little trip down memory lane by honoring the greats, but enough's enough!

We want Phil Collins, not Phil Collins editions of songs that are fine just as they are!!

What do U think?? Are U excited for Phil Collins Does Motown??

He's a talented artist, so we shall see if his "unoriginal" take is good or not…

  4. 4

Um….just who are "Those excited to hear some origional material on Phill Collins next Album."?

  5. 5

Not a fan of this guy but I have to admit that cover of the Supremes song he did a few years back was pretty good.

This is his way of saying, "I'm so rich I'm only doing what pleases me. I'm done trying to make the charts. " He doesn't care if it sells or not, he's probably worth hundreds of millions, even after those expensive divorces. The only stuff of his that even gets played on the radio any more is his old stuff from the 80's, so he's hardly got much to lose. I don't think many people will be as excited about his project as he is, but I'm glad it makes him happy.

Perez you fat fuck why is this newsworthy?

  8. 8

Nothing Phil Collins does is exciting.

  9. 9

Some of his biggest hits were near note for note versions of 60s songs, beginning with The Supremes' "You Can't Hurry Love" and then later on Two Hearts and Groovy Kind of Love from the Buster soundtrack, so this WILL sound like old Phil Collins…

Once again, you're a day late and a dollar short. Phil Collins covered Motown hit "Can't Hurry Love" in 1982. Rod dropped his "Soulbook" in 2009. Phil is old and kind of hard to look at, but if you close your eyes and listen to his covers he can still kick ass. No offense to Rod because he rocks too, but Phil covered Motown over 20 years ago, and is just adding to it now. Your ignorance shows once again, "Perez Hilton."

Phil, planet earth doesnt care! U were always a sell out,

  12. 12

I really like Phil Collins, and many of his hits were covers anyway. Groovy Kind of Love is amazing. I am glad he is coming out of retirement, CANT WAIT PHIL!!

  13. 13

I LOVE Phil Collins. I actually think he is handsome too but that is beside the point. He is a very good singer and he can afford to do what he wants now so just let him be. If you don't like it or him just don't buy it. Why all the hate. Geeeeezzzzz

  14. 14

how come when Seal put out an album of soul covers you wouldn't stop talking about how amazing it was (it was pretty good, i bought it) but Phil Collins cannot do the same? There are plenty of talented singers who put their stamp on a song just by singing it without needing to butcher the musical arrangements.

He had said he was retiring years ago. Not just from touring. Retiring all together.
He is very very rich, BTW. So while I'm sure he enjoys making more money, he doesn't need to.

Phil Collins has always been one of those artists who people either love or hate. Thanks to my dad, I grew up hearing a lot of him and Genesis, which I ultimately became a fan. He's the only male artist to score 13 top 10 hits consecutively. This man has always had complete control of his career; he's a true artist in every sense of the word. Great singer, great composer, great musician. He defined the 80s and 90s with his pop/soft rock/R&Bish sound. Great to hear he's coming back!

  17. 17

Loved the Michael McDonald Motown Album, brought back memories but was updated…..with his sound. Here's hoping Phil brings something of himself to the Motown vibe.

Re: adneauseum – Oh, darling, Phil has been pulling this tired, TIRED bullshit on us for DECADES! It really IS quite disappointing that we've waited FOREVER for new music, and not only is he dishing us up lame Motown covers, BUT HE'S ALREADY FUCKING DONE THIS!! He and Rod Stewart need to collaborate on an album of SHIT, since they both just phone it in at this point. On the other hand, (no pun intended), with his health issues, I guess we should be glad to be getting anything. BULLSHIT!!

A ton of musicians from back in the day had Motown as a heady backdrop as they grew up. Motown inspired anyone with a sense of soul or rythym, and it inspired potential musical people even more. This would make perfect sense to anyone who lived it.

  20. 20

phil collins was the SHIT back in the day!

  21. 21

Puke is right. He sucks so he shouldn't mess with the perfection of Motown and make it suck too. He is also BTW, a conservative backer in his home country. LOVED Margaret Thatcher, so that will tell you where his political & moral back bone is - in the gutter……………..
