Would You Say Twilight Is "Offensive"?

Kitschy? Yes. Predictable? Of course. But offensive? Bit of a stretch, we think.

Still, the Twilight Saga novels have found themselves on the list, the American Library Association's Top Ten Most Frequently Challenged Books of 2009 list. Stephenie Meyer's vampire romance novels landed themselves at spot #5 due to it allegedly being “sexually explicit, unsuited to age group, and [having] offensive language.”

Well that's the biggest load of piddle shit we have ever heard!

How are sparkling vampires who DON'T kill people unsuited for an age group? How is two people lying in a meadow holding hands sexually explicit? And offensive language? The author is a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints! The most offensive word that has ever come out of her mouth was cumquat!

People are WAY too stoopid!

I also want to add that it really doesn't matter if "kids are reading". The fact is, young kids, regardless of sex, should NOT be reading this material. I agree that no literature should ever be banned, however, I feel as thought Twilight should have a disclaimer of sorts. WARNING: This book contains blatant sexism. If you would like to contribute to the inequality of genders, then please buy it. It is also crap, but that's your choice.

      Offensive to my IQ.

    3. 103

I would say it's an offensively bad movie!!!!!!!!

    4. 104

The only thing I find offensive about the Twilght series is the horrendous , medicore , half-wit writing.
The Perks of Being a Wallflower was also on this list, now THAT'S a great book :)

Re: Aster8 – A female can write an anti-feminist book. Opposites are everywhere, my friend. Yeah, it shocked me the first I met a sociology professor, who's a male feminist. It's anti-feminist in the fact that Bella is degraded to nothing more than a 1950s housewife by the end of the series. She's meant to be going to university, but jacks it in. And yes, that is is because of her baby. Pretty bad lesson for girls - just have a baby and give up on college!

And while yes, they hardly ever touch - I said that myself, Edward is definitely the creepiest boyfriend you could imagine. Is it romantic for your boyfriend to oil up your window (as he does in Midnight Sun) and climb in every night, watching you sleep? And as much as Stephenie Meyer wants it to be, IT'S NOT AN HOMAGE TO SLEEPING BEAUTY or whatever the fuck she said on some dick-ass TV show. More creepiness! In one of the books, Bella wants to go and visit Jacob. Edward says no. Bella asks again. Edward says no. Bella asks again then decides she really IS going to see Jacob… but then realises her car won't start. Edward's taken out a part of the engine. What disgusting behaviour that is from someone who loves you.

I've read better books, but the Twilight saga is in no way offensive. People don't have enough to do.

    7. 107

I'm just curious as to how many parents have actually read the books… The first 3 are not that racy but the last one whoa!! Headboard breaking sex? Not something a 12 yr old needs to read or watch….and lets face it though…it's not much more worse than mtv….

    8. 108

That' s actually a list to be proud of considering the company it's in. To Kill a Mockingbird, Catcher in the Rye and all the Harry Potter books are frequents on the list. I love it when those conservative tight-wads get all up in arms about this "morality" shit, makes the books even more popular (if such a thing were possible).

    9. 109

I laughed when i read this! Twilight is a romance!!! There is nothing offensive, scary or crude about it!

    10. 110

Reading these books was like flipping through a magazine, filler between real books. Offensive? No. But I wouldn't let my daughter read them unless she was mature enough to see what a dumb ass Bella is. That is all I need is for my teenager to be encouraged to hide boys in her room, run away from home, and think she knows better than every adult involved except for her controlling stalker boyfriend. Censorship is dangerous, but parenting comes in handy here.

what a crock of shit. the world is so fucked up. there are so many bad bad things and problems out there to worry about, and then u've got these nippie poos running around with their hair on fire trying to shield today's youngin's from coming across the word ass. It's just ridic. I say, introduce these kids to all the words there are right from day one. THEY'RE JUST WORDS. as for the maybe 'sexual feeling' the book sometimes has, it's hot. and again, if kids weren't so god damn shielded from sex and just EVERYTHING for so long then maybe they wouldn't go out at 13 y. o and TRY to figure it out for themselves. ppl are fucking nutheads

hmmmm i would call them suggestive at the least in that there's a lot of metaphorical shit going on but offensive….no!

    13. 113

Re: vanCiity** – They're just words? Words have meaning, that's generally why some terms are appropriate in given situations, and some aren't. We attach emotions to words, that's what makes them so symbolic. So to say that a book is "just words" is kind of insulting not only to readers, but the author as well. By no means am I a Stephenie Meyer advocate, but I think she at least deserves the respect to have her books taken seriously (not the plot/writing style…that's just asking too much).

All these people claim the books have necrophilia, pedophilia, and beastiality. I disagree with this. First off, necrophilia? No, vampires are the undead, as in, not dead. Necrophilia is engaging in a sexual act with a dead person. Second, pedophilia? How? Yes, Jacob imprints on Renesmee, but if you actually pay attention to the books, imprinting does not mean a sexual relationship. Just because he imprints on her does not make it automatically pedophilia. Third, beastiality? I don't see it. I don't remember there being a sex scene in any of the books involving werewolves. Not to mention, even if it had the werewolves would have had to have been in wolf form.
As for the abuse and male dominance in the series, I actually agree with this. Edward is very controlling in the stories. I also think the fact that she makes Bella seem so incompetent without a man in her life offensive. Really the only other thing I find offensive was the fact the vampires sparkle…where, in any folklore do vampires fucking sparkle?!

But as for the necrophilia and beastiality, if you want to bitch about books that have that, then read Laurell K. Hamilton's Anita Blake series. They are excellent books involving wereanimals of various kinds, zombies, and REAL vampires.

    15. 115

YES IT IS OFFENSIVLY BAD !!!!!!!!!! and really Jacob becomes a pedophile-Edddie pretty much stalkers and Bella is totaly obsessed to the point of probably needing medication given the suicidal tendancies throughout the book every time Wardo leaves

    16. 116

offensive to fans of good literature, yep. but i didnt get 'sexually explicit' or 'offensive language' (unless you count abuse of the words 'sparkly' and 'chagrin') funnily enough

    17. 117

It offends me because vampires DON'T sparkle like a flamboyant fairy in the sunlight. They fucking incinerate.

    18. 118

      NO JUST BORING.

    19. 119

The most offensive thing about Twilight is that it's like 500 pages of domestic violence, stalking, and general creepiness. This isn't the type of relationship any girl should ever strive for.

    20. 120

These are the same groups of people who constantly ban Judy Blume's books from school libraries every year, only cuz they tell the truth about sex & puberty. I dont agree with cencorship, even though I find the Twilight series unbelievably vanilla…. and thats prob cuz its all full of hidden Morman propoganda. They should sit the American Library Association or whatever down in front of 1 episode of True Blood! That will make them WANT to f*ck a vampire! :)

    21. 121

Actually, in New Moon they say 'Crap' and 'Pissed off' a few times, but I mean that's not that bad. And WTF sexually explicit?! They don't mention sex at all :/ They're just simply twilight haters :(

    22. 122

_Twilight_ is offensive. It's sexist and offers a horrible example of gender roles in relationships… I wouldn't ban it but it certainly is a book that should be approached keeping in mind that it is toxic for young women.

    23. 123

"When I was reading them I didn't know how to read it from a teenage girl- or really any kind of woman's perspective, I guess. I don't know why they like it. What I thought was weird about it was when I read it, it seemed like… I was convinced that Stephenie was convinced that she was Bella and that it was like a book that wasn't supposed to be published. And you're reading, like, her sort of sexual fantasy about some… especially when she says it was based on a dream and it's like 'Oh, I've met this–I've this dream about this sexy guy!' and she just writes this book about it. And some things about Edward are so specific, I was just convinced… like 'This woman is mad. She's completely mad and she's in love with her own fictional creation…' And sometimes you feel uncomfortable reading this… And I think a lot of people feel that in the same way it's kind of voyeuristic and it creates this kind of sick pleasure."- Robert Pattinson

    24. 124

The American Library Association? Glad to know our tax dollars are hard at work.

    25. 125

Well in the fourth book they have rely intense sex… She wakes up bruised… and the bed is all broken … the second time they have sex.. shes not so bruised but the bed is effed up again… oh and she gets preagnant in the midst of it.. and let me tell u Bella is a lill horny betch… shes always trying to go all the way but hes always stoping her… this is all about Sephanie's sexual fantasies.. srsly

    26. 126

whatever, the best books are the ones that end up on the banned list

    27. 127

      much to my chagrin
