      This post made me SO angry I just had to comment.

      My anger doesn't stem from the fact that this man was elected Mayor. It rather comes from the fact that it is people like you that are keeping the divide in the rights between gay and straight people so prominent. Fighting for equality is one thing - a perfectly legit cause - but posting this story because the man is gay simply does not further that cause. It maintains a dividing line between one side nad the other and reinforces it.

      Why must we attach these labels to people? Why is it so important to distinguish between the gay and the straight and what happened to just being human. I'll bet money that Craig Lowe doesn't want to be known for winning the election because he's gay - he probably wants to be known for being elected for his viewpoints and for what he can bring to office. To accentuate that he is "gay" removes him from being looked at objectively by people and takes focus off the issues he campaigned on.

      It's great that he's gay and won but you're posting this story for the wrong reasons.

      I am straight and I take no issue with whether a person is gay or bi but I really don't understand why some people feel that it is so important to mention their sexual preference, even more so than their qualifications, merits and all other interesting aspects about a person. For me, the least interesting thing about an individual is their sexual preference. It is so irrelevant to how I feel about a person unless their sexual preference defines them, in which case I am usually turned off because there is no substance.

      We had a gay mayor back when I was younger - late 70's, early 80's? Granted, we weren't a city, just a small summer resort town, but no one thought twice about it. He did a great job from what I remember. No one I knew cared he was gay.

      No one's arguing that he deserves the position because he's gay. Most people (on Lowe’s side) probably wanted his sexuality to be a catalyst His sexuality has nothing to do with his platform, actually. But lets have respect for a man who artfully took the high road, focusing on his own election, when his opponent opted to attack the man for being openly gay.

      The real victory and thanks should go out to Craig Lowe for standing up to such hate and turning the other cheek, pressing on to victory. Guys like this are my role models, and should be for good reason. We still live in a country where gays and lesbians of all ages and in all walks of life (teenagers, baby boomers, blue collar, white collar, etc) are afraid to come out to friends or family in fear of what others will think.

      Thank you Craig Lowe. You may have helped one kid in middle school who just realized that he can be both gay and a powerful politician, businessman, etc. It could be a mom who sees a incredibly successful man in Lowe, but even more potential in her own son years down the line. While sexuality of her son may or may not have been in question before, seeing such strong gay role models in politics may make for more open dialog between mother and son.

      Being gay isn’t so bad, everyone.
