Stephen King's Secret Son, Successful Author Himself!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueEtc.

Did you know that Stephen King has a son who also writes horror novels?!

Neither did we! And neither did a lot of other people!

As we understand it, Joe Hill, author of Heart-Shaped Box and the recently released Horns, is actually the son of the famous author, but in order to be taken seriously as a writer, he has kept this fact a secret while selling his work.

In a recent interview, he explains how he spent years trying to sell his work, first with more "mainstream fiction" and then segwaying into his father's genre, under a pseudonym so that he could get work on his own merit. It took him over 10 years to finally sell something, but now that he finally has recognition all his own, he's finally ready to admit his famous literary connection. He says:

“I really believe that had I come out as Joseph King, and I wrote a mediocre work of fiction, there would be a danger that a publisher would have published it just because they saw a chance to make a buck on the last name…There were things I needed to learn about [the craft of writing] that I hadn’t done yet."

Admirable!

King is a legend and the best of luck to his son Joe Hill, but looking at the 2 of them together makes you wonder if they actually live the life of their characters…creepy couple.

  2. 2

Um… this news is several years old. Are you and your writers living under a rock, Perez? This came out when "Heart-Shaped Box" was released. In 2007! LOLOLOLOL

  3. 3

    Nope, we already knew this…

  4. 4

Its been very well documanted for years that he is Stephen Kings son. a slow day for news Perez? here is a scoop for you. The spice girls have split up!!

"segwaying" really mario??? tsk tsk. it's "segueing"

  7. 7

Joe's Mom is a talented writer as well–Tabitha King.

  8. 8

"Segwaying"?? Come on, Perez! Does your computer not spell-check? Or did King's son ride a two-wheel motorized personal vehicle into his father's genre?

  9. 9

It's "segueing" not "segwaying", which is what nerds do when they ride those gay-ass 2 wheeled things. Get a spellcheck!

  10. 10

Not segwaying:))))) Not sure of the spelling but it isn't *that*! Something like segueing.

Speak for yourself Mario. Those of us who have a passion for literature have known for years.

  12. 12

Read this book and knew about his son years ago. Geeze. You are a seriously rotten journalist. No wonder that magazine fired your ass!

  13. 13

This whole story is old news.
And check your spelling. Or fire whoever you're hiring to write these posts for you, because they're not very good at it.

  14. 14

You must live under a rock. Lately some of your "Breaking News" has been stuff that the average Joe has known about for years.

  15. 15

This is pretty old news. I'm from NH and the Portsmouth Herald did an article about this probably 3-4 years ago at least. His son, Joe, worked at a local restaurant there called the Friendly Toast, he was my waiter a handful of times while I was in HS.

  16. 16

I like both of their stories but this picture reminds me of one of those .. WHO'D YOU RATHER? … things. That's an odd looking family you have there Mr King.

  17. 17

Ummmmm…..this hasn't something worth reporting since at leat 2007.

For those who are tweeting this as though it is a breaking news story, shame on you! Try reading something besides gossip sites once in a while, and stop embarassing yourselves.

  18. 18

This news is sooooo ooooollllllllllldddddddddddddd! Please! What happened to your Separated at Birth posts. That is your strong point!

  19. 19

old assed news.Heart shaped box was amazing….I read this years ago

  20. 20

    It's 'to segue". therefore "segueing".
To 'segway" is to ride around on one of those motorized things.

  21. 21

Joe Hill says he was Stephen King's son ages ago. Slow news day?

  22. 22

I've known this for three years now. Heart-Shaped Box is one of my favorite books.

  23. 23

Honey, Segwaying is riding on an gyroscopic scooter. Segueing is transitioning from one thing to something else. I think that's the word you were looking for. ;-)

  24. 24

    I love Stephen King.

  25. 25

THis is WAY old news…. Hmmm, behind the radar a bit?

  26. 26

staying at the same homeless shelter

  27. 27

I heard about this along time ago. Heart-Shaped Box is a good book.

  28. 28

anyone who can read knows this moeon

  29. 29

    Holy Crap! Creepy Squared!

  30. 30

SEGWAYS ARE VEHICLES FOR MALL COPS AND OLD PEOPLE.

Tres Chic of you for that shout out to that!

  31. 31

Yeah - I knew this in 2007 when Heart Shaped Box was released. Wow. This is the first time I have to agree with your other non-fans who say you get the news WAY after the news has happened BB!

This story is a few weeks old. What took you so long?

    33

WTF Joe Hill King is not even close to a SECRET. That book was published years ago, and it wasn't much of a secret then that Joe Hill was Stephen's son. UGH.

  34. 34

No shit dude. That is not a new story. What is wrong with you? By the way it was not a secret that he had a son! The son is just writing under a pen name. Stephen king has written under a few pen names over the years. You write under a pen name. So I am not sure why you need to post this. Also why is this Wacky, Tacky?

  35. 35

Guess you don't read much Perez - I've known this for over a year now. Way to be on top there!!!

  36. 36

I think what he did was right. Just like j.k rolling with harry potter.. She didn't want people to think she was a female cause a lot of kids will think the book sucks so she went and initialed her name. Now, she's a billionaressss

  37. 37

segwaying - if you used this term on purpose, that's great, but the real spelling is: segueing. Figured you as a writer would want to know, esp. since you are writing about writers!

On another note, it's really no biggie. You see, the language changes PRECISELY because of mistakes (or intentional misuse) like this. Eventually, these terms will be part of our language:

Ait, fo sho, fiddy, shizzle, l8r, u, etc.

  38. 38

    uhhhhh…This is pretty well known.

    Never been a secret.

Pick up a REAL book sometime.

When your literary experience is comprised of teen magazines and tabloid toilet paper, well it's no surprise THIS is news to you.

  39. 39

Well of course you wouldn't know about this OLD NON-SECRET Perez since you probably haven't read a book since high school. That's obvious since people who read books know how to spell usually and don't make complete asses of themselves…segwaying? LOL

  40. 40

yes I did, and nearly everyone who reads stephen king has known for years! Geez you suck at this entertainment scoop thing!

  41. 41

Why is this filed under Wacky, Tacky & True? If I was a famous person's child trying to make it I wouldn't want people thinking I only succeeded because of who my parents are. Try reading the book, btw.

  42. 42

P-Hil, I wanted to chime in, but everyone has given my thoughts already. I just gotta say…..LOL Welcome to the real world sweetie!

  43. 43

So the Apple doesn't fall too far from the tree hey?

  44. 44

Come on Perez, old news! I read Heatrshaped box like three years ago when I learned who the author was. And I live in Sweden.

  45. 45

look at that guy what else would he be doing but wrtiting sick books like his dad u think stephen king would give birth to a professional athlete i mean come on lets be realistic here the apple doesnt fall far from the tree as they say.

  46. 46

What you didn't even here in Switzerland his book is available in german since some time - haven't read it so far but its under the next 5 I will.

I love horror stories, psycho thrillers and all sorts of pain and torture very much

  47. 47

*smashes earphones right into ears /turns up rammstein until ears start bleeding/flicks horns pages so hard they tear/wishes parasite hilton was in a coffin (buried alive of course)

  48. 48

he writes good books but doesn't do so well in the offspring department for sure.

  49. 49

Loved Heart Shaped Box! Thank, Perez, for letting me know about his new book. BTW, his wife Tabitha King is also a successful author. Love her Nodd's Ridge books.

  50. 50

Heart Shaped Box was an amazing book!

Joe King? Like 'Joking'! hahhahha hilarious! And thiis is news to me btw!

  54. 54

Horns is a good book, I thought it has a very Stephen king feel. Back stories of many people in a town, scary, but smart! makes sense now.

  55. 55

Wow cool! :D Like father like son! Will look him up sometime!

  56. 56

BTW, Carrie and The Langoliers are two great stories that kick a**! :D :D
    Among other works!

  57. 57

oh yeah! And "GHOSTS" with MJ too! ;)
