Actor Danny Glover and 11 other protesters were arrested outside the American headquarters of French company Sodexo, a food service company, in Maryland on Friday.
He was taken away in handcuffs after crossing a police line and cited for trespassing. They were all released shortly after.
About 300 demonstrators showed up accusing the company of union-bashing and poor working conditions.
"We're here today to say no more to deplorable pay and working conditions," Glover told the crowd. "This is a global corporation with global responsibility and we are going to hold them accountable to that responsibility."
The final straw came when 16 Sodexo workers were laid off after attempting to unionize. Workers and trade unions have accused the company of paying unlivable wages and offering slim to no benefits.
"Sodexo makes its money by turning good, high-paying, benefited, full-time jobs into low-wage, unbenefitted, part-time jobs," said Andy Stern, head of the Service Employees International Union.
So refreshing to see people riled up for a good cause! Guess Danny is the new Sean Penn!
"We can tell you categorically that Sodexo recognizes and respects our workers' rights to join or not join a union as they choose," said Sodexo vice president, Thomas Mackall.
