James Cameron Talks About Riding The Avatar Cash Cow Even More!

If you think a silly little thing like being released on DVD will stop Avatar from bringing in the bucks from the big screen, then you are sorely mistaken!

The 3D smurf ca$h cow will be released on Thursday for your home entertainment, but director James Cameron has once again found a way to make some more $$$ - he'll be releasing the 3D film in theaters once again in August - but this time with added footage!

He says:

We’re working on finishing an additional six minutes of the film — which includes a lot of Weta work — for a theatrical re-release in August. We were sold out of our Imax performances right up to the moment until they were contractually obligated to switch to “Alice in Wonderland,” so we know we left money on the table there. And the 3-D really helped “Avatar” right up until the moment that it hurt it. And it hurt it at the moment “Alice” and then “How to Train Your Dragon” and “Clash of the Titans” came in and sucked up all the 3-D screens. We went from declining 8% a week to declining 50%. Clearly, it wasn’t market forces directly; it was the availability of theaters. So we’re going to wait until there’s a time to come back in, inject the new footage into the mix and see if we can interest people in the “Avatar” experience in theaters.

It’ll be interesting because it’ll be on DVD by then, but I think “Avatar” is kind of a unique category where people are enjoying the unique theatrical experience even though they may have seen it on the small screen. They want to have that immersive, transportive experience. “2001: A Space Odyssey” played for three years at the Loews cinema in Toronto. I remember that. It just kept playing. People wanted to return to that experience. That may not be the best example because I think “2001” took 25 years to break even.

He also spoke briefly about what to expect from the film's sequels - yes, he's working on a third:

We created a broad canvas for the environment of film. That’s not just on Pandora, but throughout the Alpha Centauri AB system. And we expand out across that system and incorporate more into the story – not necessarily in the second film, but more toward a third film. I’ve already announced this, so I might as well say it: Part of my focus in the second film is in creating a different environment – a different setting within Pandora. And I’m going to be focusing on the ocean on Pandora, which will be equally rich and diverse and crazy and imaginative, but it just won’t be a rain forest. I’m not saying we won’t see what we’ve already seen; we’ll see more of that as well.

Wow! He's going to be working on these movies for the next twenty years!

What do U think?? Will U see Avatar again in theaters?? Thoughts on sequels??

ok i love the movie and i am a big fan of James Cameron, but come on, that was enough. Bring us an original sequel not this fluff crap.

Here's a thought. That movie was bullshit. Dances with wolves rewritten by a middle schooler. Only good for the special effects. I still regret seeing it the first time.

Hell yeah im going to see this…i cannot wait for Avatar sequel. Imagine what he would if he is shooting in the Ocean. I saw the Abyss he made and it was awesome and that was a long time ago.

You're just peeved that it was such a massive hit! This really is no different from the Lord of the Rings trilogy being released on dvd's in extended versions. Only Avatar will be showing in the cinema's.

    Yes & Yes. Amazing movie.

  8. 8

Only decent thing about this was the 3-D effects… story line SUCKED.

  9. 9

If you actually bothered to do any research on anything, you'd know P-Brain that this is NOT the 3D version that is being released, its the 2D.

ugh I could never put myself through the torture of watching that movie again. The first time was bad enough, that's 3 hours of my life I will never get back.

  11. 11

Oh yeah! I loved this movie I would go see it again and the sequels. This is a movie worth seeing over and over.

  12. 12

Re: Swingo – Agreed. Evil cowboys and good indians Disney movie for adults. It took 3 hours to tell a 30 min story.

  13. 13

What a retarded piece of shit movie, I felt like dances with the wolves or maybe even POCAHONTAS in blue all over again. i still don't understand the big deal of this movie, and sitting through for three hours was a torture, this movie should be locked away along with beyonce.

Wow, way to focus on your "craft" Jame$ Cameron. How creative.
This movie was the most overrated piece I've seen in about a decade. Not since… hmm… some other over the top cash cow made by the same guy!! Hey at least the guy figured out how to make ungodly amounts of money.

I'll be first in line for the sequel. Avatar isn't just a movie, it's an experience. If someone hasn't watched it out of spite, they are missing out.

  16. 16

Yes, I will definitely go see it again on Imax 3-d..am not even seeing the dvd..don't want to ruin my 3d feel experience by injecting my brain with a less excellent memory…will watch it several times again in 3-d, but ADD THE SEX SCENE CAMERON!

Re: JoeyW – Actually, it's completely different. All of the extra footage in Lord of the Rings was already shot during the production of the film. It was only edited out to accommodate theater running time. So, when it went to DVD, they put the footage back in because it had actual relevance to the movies, and was 30 minutes or more of footage.
That's a whooole different ballgame than creating 6, yes a lousy 6, minutes of bullshit just as an excuse to rerelease a crap movie just to suck some more money out of idiots. It's bad enough when you can tell some greedy ass is only doing something for the money, but this egomaniac actually admits he's only doing it because he thinks he can make more money. He's telling people outright he thinks they're so stupid they'll line his pockets more if he throws them bread crumbs, and the dumbasses who liked this shitfest to begin with, will line up like lemmings and give it to him!

  21. 21

i don't think..well i HOPE, not a lot of ppl will watch it..

  22. 22

enough of this shit, get 'Titanic' out on Blu-ray already!!!

  23. 23

uh… James Cameron…. how about contributing some of the money gained from this damn movie to help out the rainforest or something good for the planet…. otherwise you just look like a damn hypocrite releasing this movie on Earth Day…. douche…

  24. 24

i want to rent it for one buck at redbox fuck that i am buying it

  25. 25

Yes, yes and YES to it all!!!!

  26. 26

    God no…kill me now

  27. 27

Honestly, I'd see the sequels but the second theater release is pushing it. He's already rich as shit, no need to get greedy.

  28. 28

    Can't wait !

Avatar is a great movie! Hm, although I didn't expect this. I read about this in the newspaper yesterday.

this comment has to do with the alec baldwin painting…my brother happened to sell his paintings for a boat load of money in galleries all over the world. $75,000. he was in the new york expo twice. my profile pic is a pic of one of his paintings. he has thousands of them all over the world. portraits weren't his favorite thing to do but people like them and so artists do them. he has a ten year old daughter who no longer has a father. you see, he is no longer with us and to see this written about something her dad painted broke her heart. i know that people who gossip and tear others down don't care about feelings. but one of you has a seven year old. i'm sure some of you have siblings. i'm protective of family and dean just happened to also be my best friend. that painting may not have done his work justice but he was a talent like no other and very blessed. so, maybe some will hear what i'm saying and maybe not. we are all human, do we have to be so quick to point fingers as if we know what we are talking about. none of us do. we are all here looking for the same things. if that seven year old can paint better than he should be developing that talent. i'm fairly certain that was just a sarcastic remark. i'm pretty sure you couldn't paint that painting. if you could, you would be. so, whatever…just had to say something. it made me mad and it hurt not just me but his daughter.
