Hef Helps Save The Hollywood Sign!

Everyone can rest a little easier in the City of Angels thanks to Hugh Hefner and many other donors who contributed to keep the property that houses the iconic Hollywood sign out of developers' hands.

Hefner donated $900,000 and brought the final tally to $12.5 million, enough to protect the 138 acres of land.

"My childhood dreams and fantasies came from the movies, and the images created in Hollywood had a major influence on my life and Playboy," Hef says. California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger adds:

"It's a symbol of dreams and opportunity. The Hollywood sign will welcome dreamers, artists and Austrian bodybuilders for generations to come. I did what the Terminator was supposed to do, and that was to jump into action."

Good job, everyone!

As an East Coaster, yes, I acted silly and yelled "look," "LOOK !" when I saw the sign for the first time from my cab.
It is an icon. Whether they want to donate to that or something else is their business. But from me? Thanks.

It's something tourists want to see when they come to the city….and tourism boosts the economy. It's all good.

As stupid as this sounds, I'm ecstatic. The Hollywood sign is iconic, if it were to be torn down, I'd be devastated, as so many others would be, too.
To me, it symbolises hope, and creativity, freedom, dreams, passion. So many things.

Thanks, Hef! At least some things can remain sacred in this town of idiots.

This was an important bit of giving back. Hugh Hefner did a good thing. I think.

I don’t care if I sound like I don’t recognize the moral relief the powerful and the rich feel when they donate something to a lesser good (compared to the goodness of raising more money). Why don’t they do it anonymously, so the really do good without looking like they are famewhores? Why don’t they do the same land saving strategies for the thousands of families that each day are being removed for land developments?
