M.I.A, Born Free from ROMAIN-GAVRAS on Vimeo.

Check out the disturbing, thought-provoking video for M.I.A.'s new single, Born Free!

It's a total departure from her last album, and we're not sure how we feel about it yet.

Be warned, though, the clip, directed by Romain Gavras, has violence and nudity - some directed toward ginges! - so NSFW!

It's not an easy one to watch!

Do U like M.I.A.'s new sound??

What do U think she's trying to say??

wow, I don't even know what to say. I give it 1 hour before M.I.A. is having to defend her work all over the news!!!

  2. faen says – reply to this

I am not so sure about the sound yet.. But the video is brilliant even
though it made me feel a bit sick.

  3. 3

"thought-provoking"? Yeah right, just cliché pretentious bullshit. FUCK M.I.A.

  4. 4

Couldn't even make it past the first minute.

  5. 5

  6. 6

when someone tells mario what to think of it, he'll then have an opinion on it…….

  7. 7

  8. 8

I get the video…but she's not singing and it's annoying as fuck. And FYI most Americans don't understand ginge's. FYI for everyone who doesn't obviously it means redheads.

  9. 9

i really like MIA and love the way she makes strong political statements…
but that video was super disturbing…i hope it gets edited if they show it on MTV or whatever..cause i dont think thats cool.

  10. 10

    What is this crap

  11. 11

HOLY SHIZ! I've seen a lot of cinema and I've never seen anyone blow up like that. This video is brilliant. I was disturbed as if this were a real threat.

I've always considered redheads a separate race. America needs to catch up on it and recognize. I loooooooooove redheads so this was doubly heart-wrenching for me.

  12. 12

Hmmmm. It almost reminds me of Atari Teenage Riot meets Tricky but that would be too nice of a comparison for her. :P

  13. 13

I think it's an anti-American soldier commentary with Hitler-esque metaphors. The video was gratuitously disgusting and the ginger hunting scene was over the top!

  14. 14

As a redhead, that was completely unnecessary, insulting, and disgusting. I was a huge fan. Totally not supporting her music anymore.

  15. 15

And, I thought it was a pretty ridiculous attempt at trying to get her point across, as well as a poor mini movie.

  16. 16

    its blows

fuck m i a i thought she didnt do "big production" shit like lady gaga?

    FUCK YOU UGLY WHORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  17. 17

Re: applepuss – YES! You said what I was trying to say lol!

  18. 18

Lady gaga her clip does`nt make sense, voice and song the best.
here it is the opposite. hate the song like the clip.

  19. 19

This kinda makes me sick because I think she's seen these things happen in real life, hence her reason for the violent video. I think it's a video made as a huge reality check letting us know that these things are always happening. And as for the ginger thing, I think that this video was acting as a hyperbole to show how people's appearances are affecting how people are always judging them as people. I like her risk, but she should just show that as a journal entry or interview, not a video.

  20. Heh says – reply to this

Brilliant on every level. Take that world of pop. This is how a real artist does it.

  21. buck says – reply to this

she making a profound statement about Obama's facist, racist regime

  22. 22

Sounds so "canned" and like a bunch of noise put together. That's supposed to be music? I don't think so! She probably is suffering from postpartum depression or something and wants to take it out on the world. Hey M.I.A., go change a few more diapers or get together with Augilera and tell each other how much you hate GaGa. hahahahahahahaha

  23. 23

it's probably thought-provoking for the oftern percieved sheltered north americans. but this is a day-to-day occorence in Palestine. These vicious acts can be seen carried out daily by the Israelis. Notice the scarfs being worn by the boys as they chase the bus about half way through, they are Palestinian head-gear.

  24. 24

I liked the video. obviously it was disturbing, but i think the point was to make Americans realize how fucked up the genocide is that is taking place all over the world. Just like in many of the civil wars in africa, people are being dragged out of their homes and assassinated. as soon as there is a white face on it (as in mia's video) it makes people give it more attention. the fact that the video had u.s. soldiers perpetrating these atrocities i think was to make us realize that by the u.s. just idly sitting by and allowing these genocides to happen is the same as doing it ourselves.

    great video.

  25. 25

its gotta be disturbing to make an impact. so, if it's edited it's worthless

  26. 26

It's to show white people what racial profiling and racism feels like if the shoe is on the other foot. It's smart and something people need to understand.

  27. 27

WTF? Im pretty sure whatever political message she was trying to communicate couldve been done much more effectively. I give it two thumbs down.

  28. 28

It's so much about what M.I.A is trying to say, what is the director of the video trying to say?I like the song.

  29. 29

M.I.A. had a crazy childhood considering she grew up around civil war while her father was in hiding from the Sri Lanka Army. Her school was even destroyed by a government raid.

This is certainly an attention grabbing video, and since M.I.A. doesn't appear in the video at all (at least I didn't notice her) it seems she wants people to focus more on deriving the message than focusing on her.

  30. 30

Even though i find this highly disturbing i love M.I.A and i think it was a unique idea for a video.

  31. 31

this is clearly a metaphor of gingers as Palestinians. it's so clear: the throwing of the rocks, the dusty setting, and one of them even wears the Jordanian keffiyeh. the music sounds like what hipsters would smoke to. i agree that this is a pretty pretentious video, and not a clever metaphor

  32. NDGuy says – reply to this

Did she even sing in this song? If so, she sounded awful. What is with people saying they don't want to be compared to Gaga, and then they do things trying to top her, but doing a really horrible job. At least Gaga has a point and a story behind her mini movies. This is completely pointless other than shock value. Go home M.I.A. No one wants you here.

  33. 33

Don't really know what say about that. I understand the metaphor its a brilliant realization for many people, but did it have to be gingers? As a ginger I really fucking hate the new pinpointing of my hair and skin tone. I hate that South Park made it okay to make fun of me. I dealt with it enough when I was younger I really don't need to deal with it as an adult. I liked the video; it has a pretty decent message and I can understand that any other group of people in this video would've flipped bigger shits than gingers would.

  34. NDGuy says – reply to this

Re: Heh – she didn't even sing, genius. go figure out what music is before you run your mouth.

  35. 35

holy shit a bunch of gingers.
i actually like that video. another good song/vid from M.I.A.

  36. 36

I think she is a genious…..still not sure what I think of the video….as with most great art it was thought provoking…..the Ginge thing makes us white people relate to the characters that are being targeted…because in real life it is usally a difrent race….. SHE IS FUCKING BRILLIANT!!!!!!!!….. and she is one of the only artists making in your face political statements, and has taken her music back to her political roots….. I'd like to here the song seperately though……

  37. 37

Love it! Now this is art. Not that Lame Lady Caca bullshit!

  38. 38

    Re: flickgur – agreed.

  39. 39

    legalize immigration

  40. 40

Ugh, to the person who said "I'm not supporting her because she is attacking redheads", she's not attacking redheads..she's using it to make a point about discriminating individuals based off of their appearance. Yes, it is violent and very graphic but this is what people in many countries face on a daily basis. Very sad. She is brilliant.

  41. 41

I'm glad it's 9 minutes with a story, not just pop culture vomit and a random song.

  42. NDGuy says – reply to this

Re: janet12345 – I agree. She could have set it up so it was understandable. Plus, should could have attached a legitimate piece of artistry to it, i.e. Music and vocals. Isn't that her real job anyways? Start singing and maybe I'll understand your video better.

  43. 43

    ooooooooooooo kkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk

  44. 44

I hope people don't say this video makes them sick. first of all its just a video– ur supposed to talk about it, discuss, debate. I like the fact that she doesn't make music about bullshit love songs, and sex and alchohol!! So bring on the controversy MIA cause I'm ready to learn and debate.
P.S. I also think eating anything with a face is brutally WRONG! Don't kill animals!! Don't eat IN n OUT! If you want to eat a burger, kill the cow yourself!

  45. 45

UGH M.I.A. is such a freaking loser! The only reason she does a video like this is to catch everybody's attention. Not because she has some deep meaning behind it! Another person jealous of Lady Gaga and trying to do something that will prove they are much more "unique". Get a freaking life and stop trying sooooo hard to be important!

  46. 46

just to show that as ridiculous as it appears to want to go redhed hunting… its the same to want to go palestinian hunting, or any other race for that matter… hyperbole… geez people. so obvious.

  47. 47

Re: GOSSiP__xo – me neither. i like her, but wtf. go back to sunshowers and galang-galang-galangaaaaaaaaaa

  48. 48

    Re: NDGuy – exacttly!

  49. 49

oh boohoo hard to watch… maybe some food for thoughts for all those war-crazy americans when election time comes around.

  50. 50

    Re: buck – HAHAHAHAHAH

YOU'RE SO OFF ITS RIDICULOUS!!!! more like against Bush's occupation in the middle east. DUH! GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF YOUR ASS

  51. 51

Everyone loves to apply their own meanings and so brazenly say "this is what she meant!"

The whole point of the video is that it's left up to us to derive meaning. For the bandwagon-lovers who say "this is for ignorant Americans" or "this is so white people understand racism," etc, try thinking outside your own prejudices and assumptions. What does this video explicitly tell us?

Like everyone's pointing out, there is a reference to the Palestinian Keffiyah (sp?) on the Gingers that throw rocks. There's also reference to the IRA (the mural) and the Jewish Holocaust (the unloading of Gingers from the bus). The beginning alludes to the aggressive and violent SWAT raids that have become frequent in the US (even hog-tying innocent citizens and murdering their animals).

My take? No matter where you are, no matter what color you are, and no matter what religion you follow, governments (historically) can and will find some group to pidgeonhole and kill.

How about we all stand up for our rights and don't let governments take them from us? If everyone's in power, if everyone stands up for himself, liberty lives… and innocent citizens don't die at the hands of a bloody, power-hungry government.

  52. 52

    um… just no

  53. 53

Re: brownie_mix_n_frosting – AGREED. I you can't kill it yourself, don't eat it.

  54. 54

She's trying to make people realize America is becoming a police state

  55. 55

Born free at the expense of oppressing minorities . . . who often experience, violence, alienation, and institutionalized racism, among other atrocious abuses. Capitalism makes its bank on being able to oppress certain groups of people - generally minorities. Red heads, in this video clearly represent the minorities, because as science has informed us, red-heads are on the verge of extinction, thus the western world perceives that as a "weakness" under the definition of Darwinism.

What I find doubly ironic, and this is what makes the video absolutely, fucking BRILLIANT, is that it displays the same kind of violence one encounters at a local movie theatre while watching some Bruce Willis movie, or any other so-called action flick, and yet we accept it as natural. In this video, however, violence only becomes VIOLENT when it reveals a dark truth about our nature, how we continue to oppress and destroy to remain "free".

Don't get me wrong, I think Lady GaGa has her own beautiful thing going, but I'd take MIA over GaGa any day. The new song is brilliant, as is her video.

  56. 56

Rounding up redheads and shooting them? Looks like drama for drama's sake to me, no real message to be had. Can't say I remember one thing about the song either, besides it sounding like a Beastie Boys -Check Your Head outtake.

  57. 57

The song is kinda garbage, with all the focus on this disturbing video! As if you show someone being blown up into pieces by a bomb…….and Gaga gets in trouble for her "TELEPHONE" video? LOL

  58. 58

Too artsy…. Something a Hipster would make out in New York…

  59. 59

I love M.I.A..maybe that has to do with her life in Sri Lanka and the civil war but what the hell…holy depressing. Are you preparing us for a militia state here?

  60. 60

dumb song….all her songs are retarded. Video rocks tho…

  61. 61

    Re: moviebuff

yeah I know, I was like WTF. Was this shit made in Andy Warhol's Factory.. People who hang onto the mainstream for acceptance will be like "ohhh its so well done, I love the message shes giving." I just feel like this is for Hipsters…

  62. 62

    Re: MargotTenenbaum

Well thank you for enlightening those of us unfortunate enough to be to stoopid to understand this profound masterpiece. My take on it: M.I.A. is a pseudo-intellectual bitch who uses her shitty experience in a third world country as a gimmick to selfishly further her own mediocre music career.

  63. 63

Re: MargotTenenbaum – I think you need to pull your head out of your ass. Who are you to say that this video is about opressing minorities…..??? Is your name MIA…???? Did you direct it?????? NO…..so STFU

  64. 64

this was absolutely amazing. stop hating on her, seriously. and it does get the point across. its not like shes being mean to redheadsO_o shes saying how bad it is to be racist, and how gingers can be segregated like that too.

  65. 65

Whoa, sooooo unnecessarily violent. We have enough violence in the world, I really don't think we need to see any more, especially when tied to something that's supposed to be made for entertainment - her music. So unnecessary.

  66. 66

Re: MargotTenenbaum – I agree with everything you said

  67. 67

I think it stands for no matter who you are where you are there is always something society in general can pick on. I am a ginge myself and feel as thoughthos video has nothing to do with being Ginger at all it's just representing that society can't stop being a bully if it's not one thing it's another. Authority likes to show it's power and stereotyping is they way they know

  68. 68

Re: MargotTenenbaum – Thank you for that insightful, articulate response. To be honest, I am a very new M.I.A. listener. To me, any artist willing to so explicitly express their beliefs, regardless of what the popular opinion is, with such intense passion deserves some sort of acknowledgement and acclaim. What the hell have the vast majority of us done to express ourselves and try to make a difference, other than talk shit on PerezHilton.com???!! Myself included of course. ;) Thanks again for your thoughts! I think you nailed it!

  69. 69

Wow. Damn, all I can say is what the fuck?

  70. 70

That was HORRIBLE! People are drawn to shock value and I get that but this was over the top

  71. 71

After the new Law in Arizona, it's probably not far that something like this would be as well seen as ok.

  72. 72

Stupid…one more of those idiotic pop singer trying to shock with violent imagery and naked people….pointless and dumb….oh..the music suck too.

  73. 73

Re: elfinesmom – A separate race? WTF..that's the stupidest fucking thing I've heard in my life.

    Anyways…good video….horrible music

  74. 74

Re: CNDAgrl – North Americans are not sheltered. The video is f*cking stupid.

  75. 75

Love this video. I like the social commentary aspect of it as well. I don't think it is sending a message about ONE particular event or situation that is occurring right now, but rather an issue that has always existed: people can be convinced to hate basically anybody. How did Hitler convince so many people to hate the Jews? What drives people to hurt others? Research Stanley Milgram's experiment on it and you might understand this video better.

  76. 76

She is part of a Sri Lanka terrorist group. M.I.A. is anti-democracy, don't support that.

  77. 77

Umm…Wow. Great message but a weird way to express it. I also agree with the others as far as there not being much of a song in the background, or maybe I was just too into the video to really hear anything.

  78. 78

stop comparing mia to gaga. they're two completely different artists. also, this video was amazing. i'm not too sure about the song - it's not as catchy as i'd like, but the video is definitely thought provoking.

  79. losky says – reply to this

im sorry but for a music video this is just pointless. if i wanted to see naked people or people getting killed ill watch a war movie or the news. i dont think you are a great artist because you decide to make a video make you want to throw up. would you even get the message from the actual song itself? no. because all i hear is some weird chick whining in the background. and if i want to relive the holocaust ill just go to my grandpa and ask what it was like to be near inches to death at a concentration camp. i am not impressed.

  80. byho says – reply to this

i saw it like racial profiling.. like what going to happened in arizona! with the new law.. luv MIA!

  81. 81

awesome, totally different sound for her, industrial techno thrash!! i dig it, but the video was kinda odd!!

  82. byho says – reply to this

Re: mdm6767 – the video is medaphor..is about racial profiling… look arizona new law!

  83. 83

Holy Suicide, MIA ! Like Suicide(the band) as in Alan Vega and Martin Rev. Many heavily borrowed or replicated riffs from their first album/early live albums/rehearsal tape compilations. Thought provoking and complicated video.

  84. 84

made me cry for realz, cuz you and I all know it's a fact of life and it's true. So sad….. and this sortta shit is why I am so afraid of this god damn shit hole of a world. And yeah maybe she does have postpartum, this is the type of crap that made me go into my postpartum depression! no kidding, witch eventually lead to postpartum psychosis. I am finally over it now, and know that as long as I stay healthy and work out and stay strong NOTHING will ever get to me or my children EVER! I'm ready when they are, so come and get it bitches.

  85. 85

Re: djnv2009 – yeah it is odd that shit like this happens all the time hey?

  86. 86

    Yawn. M.I. who cares?

  87. 87

    Re: mdm6767 – hear hear!

  88. 88

wow, I'm not sure. shock. racial profiling, of course, but still a bit in shock. I've seen police brutality - there's a sort of John Wayne mentality that SOME (not all) have - who grossly overreact when their "moment" finally appears.
just now wow. Sick to my stomach a bit. Won't watch again, already too imprinted.

  89. 89

Re: buck – Oh please . . . Obama's "facist" regime - are you sure you didn't mean BUSH and the rest of the republican asses?

  90. 90

    Re: victoriastyping – well said.

  91. 91

not her new sound at all. She used the riff from Suicide's "Ghost Rider" and it sounds like them in general

  92. 92

    CRAP- F A I L

  93. 93

Sounds like early Jane's addiction kinda…video is TOO over the top….

  94. 94

as an m.i.a. fan, i'm not crazy about the song, but i like the video. it is very artistic, and when i first saw it this morning, i thought "perez hilton is gonna hate this". also, i get the impression that he likes it. as many say, her new album will not dissapoint, so hopefully they are right.

and the video was NOT meant to be rude to gingers. it was an metaphor. as we know, m.i.a. is fed up with the U.S. government because they think she and her family are terrorists (because her father used to be involved with the LTTE). it's a metaphor, get over it. it's not a music video, per se, it's a video that has her music being played while they tell a story about the U.S. government.

    hope this clarifies everything.

  95. 95

well said, totally get it,bit extreme but seen worse in movies, and that beat, my braintone 4 this week, cant get it out
and all the light heads complaining you where warned before the clip so shut the fuck up, why did u watch it…

  97. 97

loves it, back to how it should be. a story at its best

  98. 98

I completely agree with liltrix09 and MargotTenenbaum views.

  99. 99

I think that whether your disturbed or pissed off or whatever, the video does what it aims to; get you talking.

  100. 100

Epic video for an okay song.
