The Anti-Sex & The City Comes To TV

Somehow, we don't see this doing as well, but a tip of the cosmo for trying.

Denis Leary has developed a new series of FX, which he describes at the “the anti-Sex and the City." The pilot is still being written and the plot revolves around a "darker version" of modern day single woman. Taking the starring role in the project is Callie Thorne, one of Denis' costars from Rescue Me. She describes the show as:

“… more AbFab, which is a very good thing. The idea is that they’re single and that they’re not the type to whine about boys and babies; they’re more apt to make fun of the girls who do. Sometimes these two women aren’t likable at all.”

If women won't like them, then what is the point? You can't pull six seasons and two movies out of characters no one likes!

We don't know about this. We think we see a flop.

Thoughts?

I think you're right on the money, Perez. Callie Thorne is easily the most annoying actress on Rescue Me. I like Denis Leary's stuff, but I won't watch a show starring this woman.

  2. 2

seinfeld did quite well with a show featuring horrible, selfish people. it can work if the writing's good. this sounds good to me. i like it.

  3. 3

The Sex and the City girls went from recognizable, attractive, identifiable characters to parodies of themselves. They're stock, one-dimensional characters now.

I would LOVE to see someone rip them apart, especially if it lets the girls have fun and be as nasty as they want to be.

  4. 4

Unlikable characters are usually more fun than likable ones. Seinfeld was a show of solely unlikable characters and they sure did hella well, no? Seeing how you think it will be a flop, it will most likely be a success. You have bad taste. No need for examples, they are plastered all over your posts.

    Just sounds stupid

    Sounds horrible!

It sounds actually good, because a lot of girls out there ARE those type of girls (myself included). I watched Sex & City (ALL seasons), and I didn't really like them!

Leary's humor might be too raw and sophisticated for prime time.

  9. 9

Carrie is unlikable……and has a weird fug face but she still has a huge fanbase…..then again i prefer her friends over her story wise…sort of, i'll check it out. We all know that in the end even the bitchiest woman just wants love…aaaaaaaaaaaaaawwww look at Miranda

thx god if there is going to be one normal show which does not show superficial, dumb, needy bitches like desperate housewifes and satc. women like these shows but seriously its way toooooo boring. bring on the women which are not likable and let me like them :)

People can love unlikeable people AS LONG AS THEY SPEAK THE TRUTH (think Simon Cowell). If well written and not totally pessimistic and depressing, this show sounds like it has a lot of potential.

  14. 14

Re: @v@ – thats why its gonna be on FX, stupid.

I can't stand Callie Thorne on Rescue Me. I'll be skipping that series for sure. Which is too bad, because I like Denis Leary.

  16. 16

They've already failed because the quote proves she doesn't understand women in Sex in the City. Miranda made fun of those women and Samantha did to her end. They really represent most women. Sorry if we're not all lesbians who like motorcycles or whatever. It's reality and SATC was perfect.

  17. 17

Anyone who watches that ugly mess Sarah Jessica Parker do anything needs to have their head examined!

  18. 18

sounds interesting! I can't wait to see! :D

  19. 19

Have you never seen AbFab? Who could like Eddie and Patsy???

  20. 20

    [re=4965838]Re: elfinesmom[/
DID YOU READ THE QUOTE?? HE SAID THAT. SHE SAID 'ABFAB', WHICH IS A WHOLE NOTHER KIND OF WORLD THAN YOUR PERFECT REALITY, SATC. I UNDERSTAND THAT PRETTY WELL BECAUSE ABFAB MADE ME LAUGH 20 TIMES MORE THAN THE LADIES OF SATC EVER DID. I'D RATHER HANG OUT WITH EDDIE THAN CARRIE ANY DAMN DAY.

  21. 21

well ab fab was hugely successful.
a person doesnt neccessarily have to like the character, identifying with the character is the important thing for most people even though they dont always realize it.
its high time someone ripped those daft sex and the city girls down from their pedastal.

  22. 22

This all depends on the casting. Megan Mullaly's character on Will and Grace was an awful, awful person whom anyone would hate, but she was such a charismatic and funny actress that you just had to love her. It can happen.

  23. 23

Can't wait! I MISS AbFab. So tired of the biological clock crap.

    I'm 50 and I hate boys and babies….I'll watch!

  26. 26

As a woman, I would be interested in watching this show. One of the reasons I stopped watching Sex in the City is because I got really sick of their whining and especially the one who couldn't have babies. It's 2010, not all women want to have babies.

  27. 27

Re: brownie39 – You're absolutely right. Ab Fab always made me laugh. I don't think Sex and the City every made me laugh.

  28. 28

I think the show will be great.
Sex in the City sucked ass after the first season. Over the top ridicluous, predictable, like a cartoon.
I will tune in to see this new show.
Plus nothing is funnier than dialogue written by Dennis Leary

  29. 29

This COULD work if it's done right, but I agree with Perez…a Sex and the City caliber franchise cannot be born out of a project this dreary. However, he never said he was looking for six seasons and two movies (not to mention countless merchandise, a NYC tour, museum pieces etc), although I'm sure he wouldn't mind it…

  30. 30

I don't know. Never saw "Rescue Me" but I make fun of Sex and the City all the time. I might enjoy this show.

  31. 31

Also, Sex and the City definitely DID become a cartoon-like depiction of single women in New York…it was pretty predictable and cheesy and mostly fluff (with the exception of some deeper content scattered throughout), but that is why I think MOST people who loved the show (myself included) would categorize it as a "guilty pleasure."
Leary's show sounds completely different, really no need to even say it's the anti-SATC, they seem completely unrelated other than the single women part.

  32. 32

Well, let's see, Perez for example likes……..Lady GaGa, The Jersey Shore cast so saying that his taste is like puke in ones mouth. This show will most likely be a hit just like Rescue Me was. Hey anyone else see that Perez made #1 for the most annoying celebrity. They pegged that one right.

  33. 33

what's the point of this show if they are unlikeable? no one would watch it. Stupid if you ask me.. also another version of sex and the city is soo played out …lipstick jungle and cashmere mafia both flopped.. i doubt this would do any better

  34. 34

Who's the "we" in "We think it will flop"

  35. 35

There's a British show already doing this…wonder if they should sue….

  36. 36

    He's such a racist!!!!

  37. 37

The British show doing this is called "Pulling"…..

  38. 38

I think it's incredibly refreshing, I'm sure you know this but not all women relate to women like Carrie Bradshaw and the mind set provided by shows like Sex and the City…and

  39. 39

I think it is refreshing, I feel like women seem to be put into either two categories ,you're either a girls girl, or guys girl…or lesbian. It's nice to see a mind set contrary to what most women live by. I know a lot women could relate to a more rational and realistic approach to life, void of androcentrism.

    I liked this post.

I'll be watching. I love Sex and the City, but I also LOVE Dennis Leary and I know he wouldn't spend his time creating a new show that would flop. It's gotta be good.

  41. 41

I think it sounds like a breath of fresh air. I loved AbFab and got very sick of Carrie and Company. Refuse to see the movies. Bored by them.

  42. 42

I'll give it a shot ,liked Rescue Me , much to my suprise

  43. 43

It would be way more rock n roll and realistic than "sex and the old ladies city"! Leary is a genius, can't wait for this show. Perez isn't likely to like it, it's gonna be rock n roll, bossy. Nevermind, non gay people might love it.
