Denzel Opens On Broadway To Mixed Reviews

| Filed under: Broadway BabiesDenzel Washington

Denzel Washington's long awaited return to the Great White Way is not turning out the way he had hoped.

His play Fences opened yesterday to very mixed reviews, with his performance getting the most ridicule. Some critics are calling Denzel's performance "commanding" while others maintain that he portrays a rather "hollow" version of his character next to his predecessor, James Earl Jones.

Not really the kind of thing you want to hear on your first night out of the gate. Also not the kind of thing you want to hear when you have already shelled out $325 for a ticket!

Hopefully, Denzel can pull it together and turn this thing around.

I don't understand why all of these movie stars are trying to prove their "serious" actors. You have two Oscars and your a movie star! Who gives a fuck what the critics say?

Re: DonnieTaint – @ 1 - IMO - I don't think he (in particular) is trying to prove anything to anyone - he's probably doing broadway because he wants to, not to solidify his integrity :)

Most of the good actors started in theatres, and sometimes find it good to go back to their roots.

BTW Perez, why do you say he got ridiculed? They only said his performance is rather hollow. You really know nothing about nothing.

I never go see a film or a play etc based on what a critic has to say. May things can come into play when people are reviewing things ie bias, race, gender, etc. I will form my own opinion thank you very much. And for the record Mr.Washington doesn't need to prove anything the man is an award winning actor, and one of the best to ever do it.

I saw this show last week on Broadway and Denzel kicked ass. Also, last week, you reported that the show was doing quite well and in major demand, so it has been out for awhile now.

hahahah $325 for a ticket?? Really? What a fucking douchebag, how can you rip people off so blatantly? Who would even pay that to see his show?

    Re: DonnieTaint – i agree.
and acting in a movie and onstage is two VERY different things
