Apparently he's a "strong bet!"
Brad Pitt is in the running to star opposite Carey Mulligan in the US remake of The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo.
If he takes on the role Pitt will be reunited with Se7en director David Fincher.
Johnny Depp and George Clooney's have also been mentioned for the role and Carey Mulligan is rumored to have already secured a three-film deal for the entire Millennium Trilogy based on the books by Stieg Larsson.

I am not a huge fan of Brad Pitt, but I LOVE the Millennium Trilogy and I think Brad Pitt would fit the part of Mikael Blomkvist really well. Moreso than Johnny or George.

There have been no final casting calls on the leads as of yet. As much as I love Carey Mulligan, the studio have said as recently as this week that the female and male leads are still in negotiations. There are a hand full of actors and actresses being considered for these roles and so until they make the decision it's not up to you to report these "facts"

Brad Pitt fits the character's description from the book. He's supposed to be very handsome with blonde hair, blue eyes. Brad's also the right age. However, I think they should cast an unknown Swedish actor.
And Carey Mulligan is all wrong. I would prefer Ellen Page, Mila Kunis, or again someone Swedish!

what i don't understand is why they have to make a "us remake." the swedish one was good and the acting in it was great so i think they should just release that one into theaters. why does everything have to get re-made for it to come to the states.

Most over rated series of books in a long time, and they only get worse as the series progress. I did watch the first of the Swedish movies, and still don't see what all the rage is about…

Don't want them to make a movie at all. Love these movies and they are already perfect, they came out 2009 and there is no need to change them. Carey, sure she is a good actress but I don't think she will do a good job at all as Lisbeth, no one will. The only one that can do Lisbeth good is Noomi (the original), she is Lisbeth.
The movie are already good, DON'T make a remake just because you didn't think of doing it to a movie first or because some Americans are to lazy to read the text.

The only one that can do Lisbeth is Noomi, watch the movie and read the book you will see what I mean.

People just watch the Swedish films. Nothing Hollywood makes will due the stories justice. The performance by Michael Nyquist and Noomi Rapace are brilliant and even though I am a fan of Brad Pitt, he is no Blomkvist.

I'm going to pre-emptively thank Hollywood for their butchering of a truly amazing book, but if they add Brad to the mix they're basically just taking a huge crap on Steig Larsson's grave. Leave it the hell alone Hollywood, until you learn how to stop ruining great books (Lovely Bones, anyone?) you should stick to making rom-coms and big blockbusters.
And as much as I am in love with Carey Mulligan, she is possibly the worst person to play Salander ever. Assuming that's who she'd be playing and not Erica Berger.
