Wow! This came together VERY quickly!

Stephen King's hugely successful The Dark Tower books will be getting not only the film treatment, but may also become a TV series!

King is apparently in very serious discussions to adapt his seven edition fantasy series with Akiva Goldsman of Weed Road, as well as Imagine Entertainment's Brian Grazer and Ron Howard. The team, who worked together on A Beautiful Mind, are hoping to re-work this story into a cohesive screen trilogy in the vein of Lord of the Rings.

Goldsman is apparently working on the script, with Howard set to direct.

Sounds like it has the potential to be really cool!

We're not too familiar with the books, but we know people are OBSESSED with them, so what do U think??

Are U happy The Dark Tower books are becoming movies, or should they just be left alone??

It IS about time! Loved this book series…

    omg omg omg omg…..
best series EVER. I *just* blogged about these books, I'm compiling a list of quotes, book by book. just getting to the end of the re-read for the Gunslinger. meep! can't wait to see this play out!

  3. 3

jesus christ, worst let down ending EVER. But, I'll go to the movie anyway, as long as it's got some decent actors and a good director.

  4. 4

OMG! after reading the series I said they should make it into a movie and they are finally doing it!!!!!!!!!!! It has to be, hands-down, THE best series I have ever read. I went through all the emotions while readig it. I laughed, I cried, got so angry and at other times i was smiling ear to ear. I really hope they do it justice on the big screen. I can't even begin to imagine who they would be casting as Roland…Hugh Jackman maybe? I always thought a young Clint Eastwood would be perfect for that role…soooooooooo excited, but also afraid of them butchering it. Maybe some things are better left alone…?

  5. 5

That would be awesome. I wonder who should play Roland? Timothy Olyphant or Viggo Mortenson would be good options.

  6. 6

    this should be kickass.

  7. 7

*gasp* Oh my god! I love love love this series of books. I just completed my FOURTH read-through on Sunday! Yay! You made my day, Perez. Thanks for posting about this. :-)

  8. 8

This will be a challenge. Fantasy is better left in the head. Will have a hard time translating to a TV screen. Stephen is a genius though if anyone can do it he can.

  9. 9

I can't believe somebody hasn't done this before. Amazing series of books and a wonderful tale. Can't WAIT. P.S. I LOVE you, Stephen King!

  10. 10

I loved the books! I would love to see them on the big screen! :)

  11. 11

i LOVE LOVE LOVE the dark tower series. and i was super bummed to hear that JJ Abrams dropped out of making them, but as a die hard fan, it might be best left alone. these books are going to be a challange to live up to and i have a feeling real fans are going to be SUPER disappointed with anything other than the books.

    i'll keep my fingers crossed.

    long days and pleasant nights!

  12. 12

A trilogy? Wow there is too much material to cut it down into 3 movies.

  13. 13

DT series are SO great! Don't know how it will work out when it's translated into three movies… Sure as hell gonna watch it!
You should read the books Perez! You'll get hooked on it!

  14. 14

No no no no!!! Anyone but Akiva Goldsman! He ruined one great book already (I am legend), don't let him fuck this one up as well!!

  15. 15

    Re: archimmes

Agreed! Akiva Goldsman is a hack. The way he fucked up "I Am Legend' suggests he doesn't even read the source material. Maybe he has his publicist sum it up for him. "AMG it's about cowboys!!!!1!"

  16. 16

i love stephen king novels, and dark towers was my least favorite. so many of you love him, what am i missing?loved black house and talisman!

i had to force myself to get through the 1st dark tower

  17. 17

    Whooo hooo FINALLY!!!

  18. 18

    Re: archimmes
If by 'ruined' you mean 'took a shitty concept and actually made a decent film out of it by re-writing the whole thing because the original sucked', then yes, he ruined the hell out of it.

  19. 19

His books are sick, and not in a good way (an old man eating children??! Gross!). While some are quite interesting, others are very boring. It is hard to believe they were written by the same author.

  20. 20

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this series. Not sure if movies could do the stories justice, but I would love to see them try. Definitely would go see them.

  21. 21

Re: methesupergirl – that's what is so great about Stephen King! he doesn't just write one genre like most authors, he writes whatever comes to mind and sometimes it's about old men eating kids and at other times, he writes masterpieces such as Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me…not to mention his best work ever…The Dark Tower series. The man is genius….pure genius!

  22. 22

No no no no! This is the best book series ever written and they are just going to muff it all up. I don't think there is any actor out there with the intensity to play The Man in Black. Ugggghhhh, give that $$$$ millions of dollars budget to some f'in libraries.

  23. 23

I love this series! It's my favorite book series. However, I'm a little worried about the movie adaptation. There's just so much to cover, can they really do it right in just 3 movies? I mean… The last book alone has enough material to make 3 movies; it even has at least 4 "damn, this is about to make me cry" moments in just that one book.

Ugh. King better be all over this. I will be so disappointed if they mess this up. And I'm sure the last thing the movie industry wants is thousands of rabid Dark Tower fans.

I would love to see Zoe Zaldana get the role of Susannah/Detta/Odetta/Mia. Matthew Fox would probably be a good Roland. Get George Clooney as Pere Callahan. Cant think of anyone for Eddie. As for Jake, please, anyone but that annoying Justin Beaver(yes, misspelled on purpose) kid, as I'm sure they'll be giving him acting roles soon.

  24. 24

I am way thrilled! It's about time!!

  25. 25

They're gonna screw it up but I've already put a lot of thought into the cast when I was reading the books.

Roland- Hugh Laural from "house" Roland is not suppose to be good looking so Viggo is out!

Eddy- This one is harder, but I think either Jake Gyllanhal or Leo Decaprio could pull it off

Susannah- is easy only Jada Pinkett Smith could pull this one off

Jake- again harder cause whoever it is will age in the time it takes to make this epic, but I think Freddie Highmore, if he's not too old already.

  26. 26

OMG - now I have to hurry up to read this books - and I thought this would never happen and I have plenty of time - due to being very depressive over so many yrs I am far behind with my books *sighs*

  27. 27

I adore these books and am APPALLED that they would be considered for any screen big or small. Leave the story the hell alone! You'd think with 7 billion people on the planet, someone would be creative enough to come up with a NEW idea for a movie or TV series?!?!? LEAVE IT THE HELL ALONE HOLLYWOOD….FOR REAL!

  28. 28

Re: blyne22 – the first one is the worst one. They pick up after that.

I don't think I'll be able to watch these in the theater. There is simply too much going on in the characters' heads to translate it properly to the screen.

  29. 29

By far the best books Stephen King has ever written.

  30. 30

    good…

  31. 31

Just don't fuck it up as usual when transforming novels into movies. My mind has created a beautiful setting for the story and it would suck to see the movie and have the image tarnished. I love these books!

  32. 32

OMG OMG OMG…I almost peed my pants when I read this!! I adore Stephen King and this is the best series I have read BY FAR. I often think back to it and I finished reading it over a year ago! I do agree that it has to be very well done, and not by some hack, with a good budget. I don't think any movie adaptation will ever come close to the world King allowed me to build in my mind, but it would be pretty amazing to see someone else's interpretation on screen - with my eyes not only my mind! ::keeping my fingers crossed::

  33. 33

This series is a masterpiece!! I am not sure making a movie/tv series etc is a good idea,, seems that Stephen King is best enjoyed with a glass of wine and numerous pages to look forward to turning… The man really could publish a laundry list and I must admit I would buy it… but…. translating his genius from paper to celluloid, especially hollywood… sigh… I hope he is SUPER involved with artistic license, otherwise, anyone remember IT? Fantastic .. until the last 45 minutes..

This series deserves a ton of respect and to not be Fu**ed up by hollywood, here's hoping!!

  34. 34

i became interested in reading it when i caught a classmate in yearbook class reading it. i asked her what it was about and it sounded very interesting. i've read stephen king books before and i like his style of writing so unfortunately i wish the movie won't beat me to it. but i know it will, that's SEVEN FUCKING BOOKS!!!!

  35. 35

The only actor I have ever envisioned portraying roland is clint eastwood kinda old but still a bad ass!

  36. 36

CHRISTIAN BALE is their first choice to star in this. I hope this is true.

He was great in 3:10 To Yuma, and this has the same grittyness to it.

  37. 37

Re: blyne22 – Its funny that you loved those two books and not the dark tower series, as the Talisman and Black house were a bit of a spin off of the dark tower world.
