Dear Newsweek Magazine, THIS SUCKS!

Absolutely disgusting.

Ramin Setoodeh wrote possibly one of the most ignorant articles of all time for Newsweek Magazine, asserting that although straight men can play homosexual parts flawlessly, it doesn't work when gay people play heterosexual.

WTF kind of logic is that?!

Oh, we're sorry, are straight people just innately better performers than gays?? Or are straight people just so emotionally complex and superior that they can easily inhabit the role of a simple, caricature-like homosexual?

Here are some of infuriating gems published:

It's weird seeing Sean Hayes play straight. He comes off as wooden and insincere, like he's trying to hide something, which of course he is. Even the play's most hilarious scene, when Chuck tries to pick up a drunk woman at a bar, devolves into unintentional camp. Is it funny because of all the '60s-era one-liners, or because the woman is so drunk (and clueless) that she agrees to go home with a guy we all know is gay?

But the truth is, openly gay actors still have reason to be scared. While it's OK for straight actors to play gay (as Jake Gyllenhaal and Heath Ledger did in Brokeback Mountain), it's rare for someone to pull off the trick in reverse. De Rossi and Harris do that on TV, but they also inhabit broad caricatures, not realistic characters likes the ones in Up in the Air or even The Proposal.

As viewers, we are molded by a society obsessed with dissecting sexuality, starting with the locker-room torture in junior high school. Which is why it's a little hard to know what to make of the latest fabulous player to join Glee: Jonathan Groff, the openly gay Broadway star. In Spring Awakening, he showed us that he was a knockout singer and a heartthrob. But on TV, as the shifty glee captain from another school who steals Rachel's heart, there's something about his performance that feels off. In half his scenes, he scowls—is that a substitute for being straight? When he smiles or giggles, he seems more like your average theater queen, a better romantic match for Kurt than Rachel. It doesn't help that he tried to bed his girlfriend while singing (and writhing to) Madonna's Like a Virgin. He is so distracting, I'm starting to wonder if Groff's character on the show is supposed to be secretly gay.

Lesbian actresses might have it easier—since straight men think it's OK for them to kiss a girl and like it—but how many of them can you name? Cynthia Nixon was married to a man when she originated Miranda on Sex and the City. Kelly McGillis was straight when she steamed up Top Gun's sheets, and Anne Heche went back to dating men (including her Men in Trees costar). If an actor of the stature of George Clooney came out of the closet tomorrow, would we still accept him as a heterosexual leading man? It's hard to say. Or maybe not. Doesn't it mean something that no openly gay actor like that exists?

Or maybe, and call us a little crazy here, MAYBE it's because ignorant articles such as this are still being published, that perpetuate this kind of bigotry and ignorance that keep closeted gay leading men in the closet!

Shame on you, Newsweek!

Wow narrow minded much! How many great actors were secretly gay and we never thought anything less of their performances. Perhaps he needs to watch Neil Patrick Harris more.

  2. 2

Rupert Everett - Now there is a fine man I still drool over and sorry, even after I knew he was gay I still thought he was a total heart throb!!! BOOO Newsweek…what a bunch of haters you are!!!!

  3. 3

Maybe he's just calling as he sees it, fucktard.

  4. 4

I watch glee, and I never noticed anything off about Jonathan Groff's character. This guy is just ignorant.

  5. 5

Every time I see T.R. Knight I can't get the image of cum covering his face out of my mind. I think the idea of gay's not being play straight is crazy but at the same time I can understand not being able to get certain images out of my mind.

  6. 6

it isn't about ignorance, it is about public perception of an actor and their range. Openly gay actors (especially ones with big public profiles thanks to people like you Perez) will have a harder time convincing the public if they try to play the (straight) romantic leading man. Believability is very important in acting. If the character isn't believable, then the movie loses it's magic. You may not understand that looking at it from the standpoint of a (flaming) gay man, but from the viewpoint of a straight man, I can tell you it would make a difference.

  7. 7

    WTF?? Hello, Kevin Spacey.

Also, NPH was fabulous D.R. Horrible! Suck it Ramin.

  8. 8

Kristen Chenowith commented on this article at Newsweek.com. If you read her reply, it sums up the thoughts of many regarding this excessively homophobic article.

  9. 9

Yeah seriously, NPH is amazing at everything he does

  10. 10

Has this idiot never heard of NPH?

  11. 11

Maybe this article ought to inspire more gay actors to take on roles of all kinds? Just an idea…

  12. 12

I had no idea that the kid from glee was openly gay. I never would have known it if I hadn't read this. Some people just can't see past their own prejudices.

  13. 13

I cannot believe this. I mean, I CAN believe this, because some of America is still closed minded and lets someone sexuality hammer their whole perception of who people are just for, being people. Given, some gays let their sexuality define who they are ALL around, but for people like Neil Patrick Harris and others who clearly can play a straight male (Yeah, wtf were they talking about, harris is amazing), it's all surrounded by STRAIGHT men or women's insecurity to accept gays as anyone else.
That goes for anyone with any sexual preference.

  14. 14

Another hypocritical Perez post. He wants it both ways.

  15. 15

Relax……you're over reacting to one person's opinion. And whether or not you want to believe it, the man is right when talking about most homosexual men playing heterosexual roles. A great example is Neil Patrick Harris. I love his character Barney on How I Met Your Mother. However, even though Barney is a womanizing heterosexual, there are gay elements to his character, especially the over top stuff that Barney does.

Honestly, you need to get off your high horse. This article doesn't promote bigotry or anything like that. There's nothing in this article that keeps gay leading men in the closet. And besides, if one chooses to remain in the closet, that's their business, nobody else's. You've more than exposed people who weren't ready to come out and I think that's more damaging than this article is.

  16. 16

LMAO! Gays are GREAT actors. Most gays are mistaken as straight by the rest of the population. Yes it's true the effeminate cliché gays are only a very small percentage of the gay population and the rest is thought to be straight by everyone when believe me they're not, so give me a break!

  17. 17

It is pretty insulting and insinuating….

  18. 18

Wow…….I guess Neil Patrick Harris didn't get the memo. ^_^

  19. 19

The best example: Rock Hudson - gay and manly.
Of course, this article refers to the few "celebrities" he's seen. His definition of "actor" is so narrow.

  20. 20

Jonathan Groff's performance in Glee has been great so far..him and Rachel have been totally believable.

    Neil Patrick Harris. Enough said.

TR Knight, while playing a fairly feminine straight man, had several believable affairs.

I understand where the article is coming from - the masses are so fixated on an actor being gay that they can't see them playing a straight role - but come on now, is this what newsweek has become?

  21. 21

Did someone forget to mention to him that a good percentage of Hollywood's leading men are secretly gay?

  22. 22

For flaming gay guy's of course it is no one is honestly going to believe their straight in the movie Perez your just mad becuase you fall under that category but I don't agree in general if the right gay guy did a part it would be okay like Neil Patrick Harris or Sir Ian Mckellen. They would have to be a good actor not a flaming over exaggerated gay like you Perez.

  23. 23

Kristen Chenowith wrote a terrific rebuttal to this article. It's posted at autostraddle.com

  24. 24

Really, Newsweek? — Care to discuss Gary Grant???

  25. 25

This article is not "bigoted." He's merely pointing out that gay men often act differently than straight men. Surely you wouldn't deny that, Perez. Or can you not tell the difference between gay men and straight men? I'm pretty sure you can, since you're constantly trying to "out" people and figure out whether they're gay or not. I'd say YOU are a far bigger part of the problem than this article. You make being gay a HUGE deal. I've never known a bigger hypocrite.
Also, if you say that straight people (i.e., the majority of Americans) shouldn't be allowed to dislike someone's character, when that character acts really, really gay but is supposed to be straight, well, then you're the bigoted one.

  26. 26

i don't think its necessarily ignorant but a social commentary on the reality of hollywood everyone is pigeonhold, women, blondes, blacks and gay people too..

  27. 27

I agree with him. When I see Sean Hayes, I think, there's a gay man and have a harder time believing him as straight than I do believing Jake Gyllenhall is gay. Could be human nature, but obviously this guy sees it the same way. Just the way it is for some people. Quit getting your panties in a wad when people make comments about gays that don't jibe with yours.

  28. 28

This will keep George, Tom, Will and John in the closet until they die!

  29. 29

Look at Rock Hudson.. He sure had the world fooled for decades and had all the women swooning for him. Everyone thought he was the ladies man he portrayed on the big screen.

  30. 30

Uhhh..sorry…but, it's true. I'm a big fan of all those actors but the reality is that it's awkward and just not believable. It's not prejudice - just a fact!

  31. 31

Re: Cheezees – You beat me to it. Rock Hudson was the George Clooney of that time. And he was gay. He hid it very well though, he was not open about it, as I recall.

  32. 32

Wow what an asshole, I can't believe that in this day that in this day and age people like this are still allowed to publish articles.
Yeah and by the way I never new Jonathan Groff was gay until I saw the article on Perez.

  33. 33

This is absolutley horrific. Sure, I only found out that Jonathan Groff was gay after reading this!

  34. 34

I always agree with your opinions, except for this. How many gay men are flamers? They obviously can't do straight as well as a straight person.

  35. 35

Well, Perez, we know that in your mind there is only one viewpoint. And you are intolerant to other opinions that you see as "intolerant" (quite ironic). However, I find that any actor who has a strong persona off screen is often "unbelievable" while playing a role. For example, when watching Brad Pitt, I can never forget that it is Brad Pitt. Same with Seth Hayes - I strongly associate him with the gay character on Will & Grace and thus, it is hard to see him in a role that is 180 of that. Kevin Spacey, on the other hand can play ANY role because he is very talented and very low key…a blank slate. That's a good thing for an actor.

  36. 36

PS I am gay, and I did not know the new guy on Glee was gay and I watch it every week. I think this writer has a big sexual problem. Seems he had a problem with Adam Lambert for being gay as well. My God, it's 2010 people and we don't live in Nazi Germany.

  37. 37

LOVE kristin for giving a response. PS i have NO IDEA how jgroff's spring awakening character n spring awakening he worries about the society that created Nazis, his best friends teenage suicide, and his pregant girfriends practical murder. SO FUCK YOU NESWEEK. 10 bucks almost all the people watching glee don't think he is gay and if they find out another thousand dollars they won't care because the newer generations are trying to be above that.

  38. 38

Actually, I had no idea that Jonathan Groff is gay until after I saw him in Glee and read his Wikipedia bio. I think he plays a downright dreamy straight bf — I can't believe Newsweek would print that shite.

  39. 39

Ramin Setoodeh is speaking the truth. It doesn't work the other way round.

  40. ariaj says – reply to this

WTF? Johnathan Groff is amazing on Glee! I didn't even know he was gay until someone pointed it out a few days ago.

  41. 41

This is what has kept actors "in the closet" for so many years - the fear that they'll never be able to play roles due to their sexuality. And I dunno if it's true or not - Neil Patrick Harris is always awesome, Alan Cumming (and his ever-changing sexuality) is good in everything he does… Jodie Foster is freakin' Jodie Foster… Maybe it has to do with the quality of actor, because I can't stand Sean Hayes in anything. When he "plays gay", he's like a huge ridiculous caricature of it and when he "plays straight", it's so obvious that he's not straight that I can't convince myself otherwise. And I felt this BEFORE he came out. He's just not very good, and that's got nothing to do with his preferences.

  42. 42

ARE YOU SERIOUS??? There is nothing remotely bigoted about these "gems" you picked, which I'm assuming you picked because they were the worst you could come up with. He's simply saying, when a gay actor is chosen to play a straight character, the character is often, if not always, a caricature of a straight person.

  43. 43

    Newsweek should stick to news.

  44. 44

It's about as wrong as some flaming queen blogger thinking it's his right to out anyone he thinks is gay. Get off your fucking self-righteous high horse.

  45. 45

Ewwwwwwww!!!!!! Talk about a lame and narrow-minded fucktard trying to play the role of a relevant human being. Now THAT is something that just doesn't work. It's infuriating that shit like this gets published. Write a letter in response Perez and don't honor this type of douche-bagieness on your website.

  46. 46

Naturally, having written this article, I will now wonder if Ramin Setoodeh is a closet, self-hating gay. . . .
Let's consider the most recent story of well-known Anti-Gay Activist George Rekers (Perez, I'm surprised you didn't cover this one) — who recently returned from a 10 day vacation in Europe with a escort from "RentBoy.com" Yes, that's right — RentBoy.com.
Gay Georege Rekers' comment on this discovery is that he had recently injured his back, and needed someone to carry his luggage.
Un huh . . . The Escort, known as Lucien, acknowledged George wanted nude rubdowns daily. . ..
George's new "excuse" is that he likes to spend time with "sinners with the goal of trying to help them."
Uh huh. To Newsweek author Ramin Setoodeh, I'll be waiting to see exactly who YOU are . . .

  47. 47

Re: Me5 – AGREED!!! Montgomery Cliff, Rock Hudson, heck even Carey Grant supposedly had male lovers! And when I'm watching the hilarious antics of Barney Stinson on HIMYM, the LAST thing I think of is that Barney is unbelievable because Neil Patrick Harris is gay in real life. Perez, you and I don't agree on politics very often, but I'm with you 100 percent on the gay marriage issue as well as the ignorance of this article.

  48. 48

ARE YOU SERIOUS? There is nothing bigoted in this article, in the least. I'm assuming you chose these pieces of the article b/c they were the worst in it.

What Setoodeh is trying to say is that when an openly gay actor plays a character, the character was most likely written as a caricature of a straight person. Now, contradictory (a little) to what the article says, this isn't always an actor's problem, sometimes the script is written like that. But, let us all think about How I Met Your Mother and NPH's role on that show. Is his character not over the top? Is every straight man a womanizer?

All this article is trying to do is raise a conversation. But, if you are so quick to jump to conclusions because he is criticizing your favorite show, and then call him a homophobe, maybe you need to lay off of your judgments.

You are not the gay savior, so quit pretending you are. You are a celebrity gossip site. Please don't forget this, because in the articles that you do, you come off as an ignorant moron.

  49. 49

Re: CynicallyHopeful – why don't YOU and the rest of the negative posters READ THE WHOLE ARTICLE. instead of the 2 paragraphs mario is letting you read. He talks about Sean Hayes because he officially came out of the closed JUST before he started in the play and alot of people HAVE THAT ON THEIR MINDS, so him trying to pick up a girl does not play out right. It takes a GREAT ACTOR TO CANCEL IT OUT. Most actors are not great. Neil PH was already in that role, THEN came out. HE IS GOOD.

  50. 50

    That is ignorant!!

  51. 51

I'd also like to mention that The Thorn Birds is one of my favorite movies, and knowing that Richard Chamberlain is gay does absolutely nothing to diminish the credibility and HOTNESS of Father Ralph.

  52. Emesa says – reply to this

Wow Perez that was a pretty articulate post. Why do you only write well when you're angry about homophobia, and the rest of the time its like a 6 year old?

    (I agree with you fwiw)

  53. 53

    Re: FunnyGuy1974
Are you READING the same article as everyone else? It comes out and says: Gay men can't portray straight men. Period. And NPH was more than believable as a straight man in Dr Horrible - proving this fucktard wrong. There was nothing 'gay' about his character then.

It absolutely perpetuates bigotry. Gay men will remain in the closet - not because they want to, but because they'll not be cast as a straight man if they come out and lose work. Think before you speak.

  54. 54

What a Twit. Nobody had any problems believing Rock Hudson, Richard Chamberlain, and the guy who played the father on The Brady Bunch, among others ! This NEWSWEEK guy is the one who has the problem. Deal !

  55. 55

And don't forget Tom Cruise, this Bradley Cooper, Keith Urban (although, he is a musician) …many, many more !

  56. 56

Re: Dick Gozinya – Amen, unfortunately !

  57. 57

It's true for the extremely effeminate gay guys. They don't play straight well. If they're used to being flamers how do you expect us to take them seriously as "straight men" It may not apply to all gay guys but for the one that act like females in real life, this is true

  58. 58

What a bunch of bigoted bullshit.

AND PS idiots - many of the greatest actors and actresses of all time were gay, and they played straight people brilliantly. Idiots.

  59. 59

Rupert Everett recently said in an article that he questions whether he should have said anything because his career has gone downhill since he came out. NPH is always great and I can easily accept his straight characters. I suppose it depends on what other characters you have played in the past…Sean Hayes was great and hilarious on Will and Grace. So maybe enough time hasn't passed that people believe his straight character..I think if you are a good enough actor it will not matter what your sexuality is…

  60. 60

he tells of when Rupert Everett said that gay actors should stay in the closet for film and the reaction. BUT, look at Tab Hunter, Van Johnson, Anthony Perkins, Rock Hudson-they would have NEVER, EVER made it in film as leading men if people knew they were gay. EVER. It is a preception. You sometimes get crushes on stars, back then joined fan clubs, etc. If they were out, their following would have been much lower and the box office, MUCH LOWER. IT IS ALL ABOUT THE DOLLAR. Now with Glee, he mentioned that J. Groff was gay, it will affect the believability for some. It did for him. Neil PH, I think he is sucessful, because he does not shove his sexuality out in the press. He already had sucess, it will help for him.

  61. 61

And Zac ! Poor Zac will have to stick with Miss-FLASH MY BOOBS ON THE INTERNET-till the day he dies, IF he wants to work in H'Wood !

  62. 62

Read the whole article. Taking "gems" out of context like you did, I gotta wonder if you read the whole thing or just skimmed for text to push your agenda. When he talks about Sean Hayes, he's talking about how he is playing a part on broadway previously played by Jerry Orbach.

  63. 63

check out john barrowman he has acted in straight parts and you can never tell

  64. 64

dont we have more important things to think about than if gay can play straight or straight can play gay? it depends on the roll and the actors playing the roll. I really dont care if they are one way or another i just care if it is a good preformance or not

  65. 65

and as for george clooney, mario, NO, george would lose alot of his fan base. Just as YOU fantasize about EVERY MAN OUT THERE, alot of women do with men. If they picture in their heads that actor doing another man, it is a turn off for alot. Look at all the bieber fans, the twilight fans. IT IS SEXUAL. If all those girls found out that justin liked boys, do you think he would still be the success he is? NO! Twilight? NOT NEARLY AS MUCH. YOU, Mario, did not get the WHOLE, DEEP DOWN THOUGHT OF THE ARTICLE. and SHAME ON YOU FOR BLAMING NEWSWEEK. I dislike Newsweek for some of their left sided articles, but LOOK AT THEIR TITLE. They are bringing you different articles, different news from the week, JERK. YOU DON'T EVEN READ THE MAG.

  66. 66

Is Ramin Setoodeh gay or straight? Male or female?

  67. 67

Wow, that's really shitty. Most print magazines are not doing too well now, but this sort of crap is a reason people are turning away from Newsweek in droves - their circulation is WAY down. Seriously, Newsweek, why would anyone with an attitude more progressive than your average Tea-bagger find such an article interesting or thought-provoking, or want to read more from the author, or buy your failing magazine, much less advertise in it?
P.S. - Likable as he is, I never thought Sean Hayes was the greatest actor, but WTF does that have to do with him being Gay?
P.P.S. - Jake Gyllenhaal is straight??

  68. 68

uhhh, hello? Neil Patrick Harris- the funniest gay playing straight man on TV!! No one else could pull that role of like he does! Very, very narrow minded.

  69. 69

This is absolutely reprehensible, and so one-sided and ignorant I can barely believe it got published. Setoodeh uses incredibly flawed anti-logic, claiming that certain gay performers just can't play straight, but he goes into this assumption with his sights already coloured by prejudice; it is exactly like saying you don't trust a Jewish doctor, an African-American congressman, or a Native American teacher.

I for one had no idea that Johnathan Groff was gay; I've known him from Spring Awakening and I actually find his chemistry with Rachel to be fairly good on Glee. I think what is the real problem here is the homophobia being put on display in this article; if Setoodeh wants to know why there are no openly gay leading men in Hollywood, he should do best to look in a mirror in order to find the answer.

  70. 70

I can't believe Newsweek printed such an insanely stupid article. Aren't they a news magazine? Obviously this guy hasn't found out Neil Patrick Harris is gay. Also, he clearly doesn't get how many women are still attracted to gay men. He needs to understand that art is art. It's called a willing suspension of disbelief and this douchetard obviously has no imagination, heart or soul. As an actress, this article really hurts my feelings because this man is slapping my peers in the face. I think I am about to write my first letter to an editor. Glad I'm a US News and World Report subscriber. F-u newsweek!

  71. 71

Re: b a t k i s s – Kristin Chenowith's rebuttal article (which is fantastic) says that the Newsweek author is a gay man.

  72. 72

Mario bitching about some one talking out their ass Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha

  73. 73

Isn't Ramin Setoodeh gay ? Rock Hudson, James Byron Dean Errol Flynn were all gay or bi it only comes out years later half of Hollywood is gay. I love that he uses Jake Gyllenhaal as an example when Jake is gay he and Austin Nichols are lovers have been for a long time. Newsweek is just playing the same bullshit hollywood game. Its not just Hollywood that's in the closet how many football players are gay ? LOTS and soccer as you people call it they have more gay players than straight. Ramin Setoodeh you are a dickhead! NEWSWEEK is up for sale gee I wonder why ?

  74. 74

    What a disgusting man!

It's sad. This is the EXACT reason it took Sean Hayes so long to come out. When asked he said he didn't want THIS EXACT THING said about his performances.

  75. 75

He did get at least one thing right in the article… Sean Hayes does not play straight well. Just like some actors can't do a british accent and some actors can't do southern. Sean Hayes is HORRIFYINGLY BAD at trying to act straight in roles.

  76. 76

I don't think the author of this article is particularly homophobic or ignorant, nor do I think he is suggesting that people in general are homophonic of ignorant. What, I think, he is trying to say is that it is hard for the public to differentiate what is real and what is pretend and, in some cases, the same for gay actors. I would agree, seeing Sean Hayes play a straight character after watching the series of Will & Grace is a little bit of a stretch. In my mind I will always picture him as his character from that show.

That said, he is describing society not himself, right? As a society we are OBSESSED with everyone's friggin sexuality, so much so that People magazine was going to have an exclusive announcement on May 5 announcing yet another person to come out of the closet. I am of the opinion that it shouldn't matter. And it shouldn't reflect on an idviduals performance whether they are actors or not. But when you are accostomed to seeing a performer perform in a certain way, well, it's hard not see them otherwise. I mean Sean Hayes as a straight man? Come on! You have to admit that is sorta funny.

Perez, you need to relax when calling people out on being racist or ignorant or homophobic, bc to some degree you are, too.

  77. 77

Actually this is true…..queeny gays could ver play straight…..

  78. 78

Actually this is true…..queeny gays could never play straight…..

  79. wtvz says – reply to this

would he have these opinions on these actors if he didn't know they were gay? I doubt it

  80. 80

This guy is ridic. First of all if an actor of any sexuality is not playing believable to this guy' standards, maybe it is because this guy has an ax to grind when watching. I had no idea the guy on Glee was gay and now that I do know it still won't affect how believable I think he is as a love interest for Rachel. And NPH on "HIMYM" is playing a funny out there character in Barney but he is 100% believable as a ladies man. How many actors were gay back in the day that just didn't come out because of societal standards? Do you now watch those movies and think "wow, now that I know he/she is gay I can put my finger on what is wrong with this hetero love scenet?" And I don't look back on early Sex and the City when Cynthia Nixon was with a man and think, well she had experience with men so that is why she can act like she's in love with one now as she's an out lesbian. This is straight out bigotry. And when did this guy become the authority on good fucking acting to begin with?

  81. 81

Do you know what else sucks? Lohan on rent day!

  82. 82

this article is so true. i can always tell when a gay actor is trying to play straight, even if i dont know the actor is out or not. bottom line is, most gay actors are too gay to play straight. sad but true.

  83. 83

Wow! i can't believe he thinks that! I for one didn't even know who the new guy on Glee was and didn't know he is gay in real life and mysteriously,he didn't come off as gay to me! Go figure! So no he is not "acting gay". Basically you can't seem to separate real life from acting because YOU are caught up in it-not everyone is!

  84. 84

What about Neil Patrick Harris? isn't he gay and he plays a straight guy (womanizer) on tv.

i never even realized Jonathan Groff was gay not that it matters

Re: neenee86 – Same here. Only found out now. Had no idea, and I couldn't care less - he's good in the role.

  87. 87

If I know that the leading man takes it in the ass or sucks dick, I am instantly repulsed!

  88. 88

I cannot get over how narrowminded the writer of this article is! There have always been gay actors out there playing straight roles without anyone being the wiser. When watching a movie or tv show you should be paying attention the character they are playing not the actors personal life!!!! Shame on you Newsweek for being so ignorant in this day and age!

  89. 89

umm..HELLO. jonathan does a great job on Glee…me n all my friends are IN LOVE with him. he's perfect. people are stupid.

  90. 90

I think it really depends on how good an actor you are. Not all gay men can pull it off. But not every actor, straight or gay, can pull off every role either. I think NPH is awesome!

I don't want to sound like a complete bitch .. but I kinda see his point of view .. I mean, believe me, I have nothing against gay men, gay women, at all, some of my best friends are either gay or lesbian lol .. (not that that means anything really) but for example, one of my best friends is gay, and he can't even tone down the over-exuberant actions when he needs to, or not be so blatantly obvious that he is gay, which I could never see him trying to even pretend he were straight. Some people cannot do it .. even if you were an actor, you may not be able to tone it down enough to be convincing. Do you see what I mean ? There are a lot of actors and actresses that have come forth and told everyone that they are gay, who we would have had no idea .. but then there are some people who we know for sure are .. as they cannot seem to hide it. Like Perez for example lol .. he can't hide the fact that he is gay, there is no way .. now if he were to try and play a straight man on tv, no one would believe it at all. I think a lot of people would be able to use their acting skills well enough to be convincing, but I am also sure that not every gay actor/actress will be able to make us believe that they are straight.

Newsweek is currently going down the toilet — who fucking cares???????? The asshole author will be out of a job sooner than later!

  93. 93

    Re: wonderwoman
Yes because you taking it in the ass and sucking dicks is so repulsive!

  94. 94

Neil Patrick Harris - played straight since Doogie - and how many more actors out there are gay that we don't know in the general public are so? Still hot, still good job. Maybe the schmuck should consider that some people just aren't as good of actors as other people and it has nothing to do with their sexuality.

  95. 95

You are wrong Perez. There are certain gay affectations. Those affects are much easier to emulate than they are to hide. The article writer was correct and honest, not a bigot.

  96. 96

Not everyone an be Rock Hudson, Newsweek

WTFFFFFF!!!!? Johnathan Groff is gay? I'm a huge fan of both Glee and Spring Awakening and had no idea. I dont even know if that's true or if this guy is just trying to out random actors. If he is gay this totally goes against what he's trying t oachieve in this article. I'm pretty sure none of the millions of teenage girls who tune into Glee even think that Johnathan Groff is gay. If he is gay he's an even more amazing actor than I already think he is. SERIOUSLY GUY!!! COME ON!

PS. I'm glad Kristin Chenoweth responded to this article publically. She is basically a role model for all Broadway actors as well as an iconic and heroic voice in the push for equality.

I must put in my opinion - I had no idea who Jonathan Groff was until he appeared on "Glee" and until you told me he is openly gay I was not aware of it. BUT having said that I kept having this nagging feeling that the guy had no attraction to the "Rachel" character including when he is trying to bed her. I simply thought he was a rotten actor with very little sex appeal. Thanks to you and Newsweek I can now fully understand the problem.

Regarding Sean Hayes - when he plays straight it's like a scene from "La cage aux folles". I guess some people just have problems with some roles - like Lindsay Lohan in any role?

Not only is this piece of trash article poorly written and substantially lacking. The writer is also contradicting himself, there are in fact many, many supposed straight stars in Hollywood (known to be open in the industry itself though) who take on the leading heart-throb roles. So, basically, the closeted actors are convincing, yet the openly ones not. Puh-lease, that's BS. Trash.

Jake Gyllenhaal will be glad though, that finally someone besides horny middle-aged women actually believes he's straight. So yay for that :/
