Is American Idiot Doomed On Broadway?

We think there might be another bomb on Broadway - and Green Day put it there!

Though last week the Green Day musical American Idiot garnered itself a Tony nomination, the show itself is having a lot of trouble.

Sources confirm that the show has been playing to under a 70% capacity for some time now, which isn't good considering all of the press for the show in the last few weeks.

Has the novelty worn off or are theatre goers just not interested?

What gives?

It did wonders in Berkeley, CA. Gee I wonder why?

I would see it in a heart beat if it were playing near me.

Considering the price of tickets on Broadway - and the fact that the country is in a RECESSION; perhaps that has alittle something to do with it….

I have seen the show twice, and have attempted to see it much more through the lottery they hold, and i feel the reason why it is doing so poorly is because of the ticket prices. since previews, they have upped the minimum ticket prices to almost $50 opposed to what I believe used to be $32. considering those are for the worst seats in the house, and the show does appeal to a younger audience that can't afford that (aka broke college students like me), it is bound to hurt their bottom line regarding ticket sales.

the show itself is good. honestly, i was expecting a little more from the storyline. i thought it would be a little more balanced with everything, but the actors are amazing, the musical arrangements are excellent, and it is very high energy. i honestly thought it would do better with tony nominations. i would have liked to see many of the actors nominated along with the choreographer and director. i thought at least they would nominate gallagher, but i guess kelsey grammer is bound to win, and do we really want to see another person from spring awakening loose to someone from fraiser. he is very good in the part though, as are all of the actors.

Re: rbs315 – I AGREE WITH YOU 100% I've been dying to see it since it came out but I couldn't. When I tried to find the cheapest tickets for the show, there was nothing less then $95 plus tax. I'm a college student which means I'm BROKE AS SHIT! And what sucks the most is that they don't offer student rush. =/

haha, it's stunning how you can't answer your own question. Why the hell would anyone want to see a play based on an album by Green Day? Whoever thought this up was a a complete jackass, period. It makes absolutely no sense, first of all, to even produce this. What did they even come up with, a flimsy left leaning yet playful/childish rant on the rampant hypocrisy and stupidity that runs our government? Sorry, but a topic such as this cannot be taken seirously in a play of this nature; it simply does not fit. Even Greenday fans are cringing at how lame this is.

It's not that good of a show, that's a big reason.

I think the St. James is too big a theater for them. As good of a show as it is, they can't honestly expect to fill 1500+ seats every single day.

God, I hope so, these liberal hacks need to hang it up, they Suck Balls! Your music suck,s you look like douchebags and you suck at life green Day!

I am an actor in NYC theater. There are two kinds of theater-goers in NY: older bridge & tunnel tourists with the average age of like 65, and the families with young kids who only come in for Mary Poppins, Lion King or Wicked. My New Jersey parents have seen Jersey Boys, Wicked, Phantom all several times. They have never heard of Green Day. As brilliant as it is, it is not a good fit for the Broadway crowd.

Meanwhile, how many young Green Day fans have an extra $125 to spend on a Broadway show ticket?

I'm personally an incredibly huge and dedicated Green Day fan. I have been since I was eight years old and I absolutely despise this musical. I bought the soundtrack, being a good fan, but I couldn't even get through the first couple songs because it was so dreadful. The songs are not BAD songs, they are just not Green Day songs. I think this musical was a horrible mistakes and I do believe they may lose some fans because of that and I am truly disappointed in them for this move in their career. American Idiot was already their worst album, and all of us die-hards were so glad that era was over & then this musical came out & we continue to be haunted by this album. Not a good idea, still love those boys though.

Ever consider that it might just suck? From the clips I've seen it doesn't look like it's worth even a cent of my money. This play is nothing but Billie Joe masturbating to himself.

im 18 and i've been a fan since i was 5, i have to agree with a lot of the comments here, this is a younger aduience, those who would go don't have the money, if they lowered the price then it would do a lot better, and the St. James is rather large to fill…. not that it sucks, and reviewers have al said that the storyline is lacking so…

    16. 16

Lets hope so. That is the crappiest band thats made it since Ringo went solo.

Where are you getting your information? American IDIOT is doing incredibly well! Selling way over it's quota. I think you should CHECK YOUR FACTS. - "playing for some time now" - it JUST opened April 22nd - LESS THAN 1 MONTH?!?! You're getting your facts from a competing B'way data people! I was American IDIOT and it was AMAZING! to a SOLD OUT HOUSE!

Perez u have to let people know about a hot off broadway rock musical at The Public Theater! BLOODY BLOODY ANDREW JACKSON, it keeps extending and has the most buzz in NYC!

Winners that they are, they priced out their true audience! My parents (in their 50s, lots of money to spend, pretty great taste in classic rock) wouldnt be caught dead at a Green Day concert, let alone a Green Day concert where even Green Day doesn't show up…just saying. Altho I (in my 20s, enough moeny to spend on regular amusement, pretty great taste in all things music and otherwise) would love to go see it, I'll wait until the ticket price includes Billie, Trey and Mike seatside feeding me popcorn and gold gilted peanuts and the occassional whiny affirmation that "this is NOT selling out!"
My dearest Broadway, youve lost your way! The babes you once made great have left for greener pastures… called GLEE…and the plasma screen doesnt discriminate…Bring back the classics!

Just saw it on Friday and it's horrible. There is basically no story line and the choreography is an embarrassment. I was extremely disapointed. Ticket sales the first week were really good, but I'm sure word is getting around that the show is no good.

    21. 21

Your "sources" say that the show is under 70%? Broadway attendance is published weekly and is hardly a secret. Yes, the show had 68% attendance last week, one of the few weeks the show has been open. So its a little soon to ask if the novelty has worn off when the show has barely been open. You seem to be making something out of nothing.

And a quick search for tickets will show that there are low priced pre-sold tickets (well under 90 bucks) available to every show. I don't know where these posters are coming up with this incorrect ticket information. I've seen the show twice in new york and gotta say–I loved it, but its not for everyone.

    22. 22

HOW ABOUT….no one can afford 100. or more for a ticket anymore!

    23. 23

I would see it! Johnny gallagher :)
