Katherine Heigl's Baby Had Open Heart Surgery!

| Filed under: Baby BlabberLove LineInspirationKatherine Heigl

Katherine Heigl shocked everyone when she announced that she and husband Josh Kelley were planning on adopting a child, a Korean baby named Naleigh, and that her 'special needs' would make the process go a lot faster.

In the latest issue of Harper's Bazaar, the actress reveals that those aforementioned needs were actual a congenital heart problem that has since been resolved with open heart surgery!

She says:

“Her heart is 100 percent fine now. She has a scar, so she won’t be wearing bikinis, which is fine by us. A lot of children don’t find forever homes because they’re on that special-needs list, even if it’s because of something as simple as her mother smoked cigarettes for a month, not knowing she was pregnant. That’s not so huge that you couldn’t handle it.”

Wow! They did a wonderful thing, helping little Naleigh get the help she needed!

Don't have to like her, but can't argue that her heart is in the right place!

Congratulations on the healthy and happy family!

i am just glad she didn't attempt surgery herself based on her greys training!

  2. 2

I find it interesting that she has to mention cigarette smoking while pregnant and making it seem like it's not a big deal.

  3. 3

What a sweet little baby. She's lucky to have been saved and cared for.

  4. 4

There you were bashing on her for not bringing the little one out to lunch about a week ago. Now maybe you see her reasons werent all dark and gloomy and being a bad mother perhaps the little one was still recovering. You make everything out to be so horrible, and no conscience. Where is your apology? Oh thats right you still have your foot stuck in your mouth, probably both of them.
Way to go Katherine for helping the little one get the health care she needed and for giving her a loving home. All the best to your family.

Awww, is the little squitty eyed chink okay?
White women should adopt white babies.
    Chinee should adopt Chinee babies.

  6. 6

Don't have to like her? Why would you hate her? Did she do something to you?

she's dressing as if she gave birth to her baby… put on some more flattering clothes girl

She is stupid to think that OH people wont wear bikinis. Scars rock! I would never let my OH kid think she shouldn't wear a bikini. Wear what you want girl, show the world how tough you are! Also, BTW anyone who has had OH is at risk for many more problems. There is no 100% fix.

  9. 9

So this girl should be ashamed of her scar, therefore she should be embarrassed to wear a bikini? wtf heigl.

  10. 10

Aw poor little sweet thing, that's really nice and she seems like she's a good mom so far!

  11. 11

Im glad the little baby is ok…however, that doesn't stop me from thinking that this girls mother is the most self-satisfied, ungreatful and unappreciative woman in all Hollywood. All of her movies are awful (how she keeps getting jobs is beyond me), and borderline sexist…soooo.. Fuck you Katherine Heigl, but im glad ur baby is doing well.

  12. 12

Re: gduque – she did said without knowing she was preggo… and what she meant was that it wasn't a major disability…

  13. 13

I'm a little disturbed about the "won't be wearing bikinis" comment. Scars (imperfections) make you less of a person? Someone that should be hidden away? What about Padma Lakshmi?

  14. 14

Wow everything turns to race on the comments every time. All I will say is I hope the baby has a healthy happy life and adoption is a great thing.

  15. 15

I hope she doesn't smoke around the baby. Hopefully, she gave that up for good.

She can't wear a bikini because of a lil' scar?! What a superficial bitch.

  17. 17

    Re: Pokepoo

and idiots like you should just go burn in hell.

oh by the way, the baby is korean. get your sh*t straight before making anymore stupid comments.

  18. 18

Why the hell should a little child wear a bikini? That's really fucked up.

Re: tellall – pretty sure she meant when she gets older.

  21. 21

    Re: annuus – LOL

  22. 22

I'm super happy for her. But annoyed that Asian adoptions, even of special needs children, require you be legally married for a minimum of 2 years first. That leaves out same sex couples… that also leaves out single women like me, who are financially able to add another child to my home.

And to anyone who wonders… why not adopt from my own country? Even more complicated legal loopholes, including parents being able to fight to regain custody… long wait times… and in the case of celebrities adopting, it's often quicker and easier to adopt from a foreign country.

  23. 23

And ditto what others have said here… you owe her an apology for acting like a prick last week when she wasn't toting her baby around.

Even you shouldn't be above standing up and acting like a decent human being. Just tweet her you're sorry already!

  24. 24

Wonder if you'll apologize for your nasty comments you made about her mothering skills last week, which I think were something like "where's that baby she wanted to be to a mother to so much that she quit Grey's". No. You have no class. You won't apologize. I'm betting the baby was in the hospital and Katherine and her family went off for lunch, and that's the reason she was giving the paparazzi the evil eye. You and your staff are douches Perez.

  25. 25

Awww that's so nice. Cute baby =)

  26. 26

Since when did having a congenital heart condition put you in the special needs category??
I had open heart surgery when I was two years old and in no way have I lived my life any different than a healthy person. Yes, this will stay with her the rest of her life and she will likely have to continue yearly checkups such as I do but she will mostly be perfectly normal.
To put her in the special needs category is bullshit, and to hear Katherine Heigl say her child wont be able to wear a bikini is fucking disgusting.

  27. 27

CHD's don't develop in utero because a mother smoked for a month without knowing she was pregnant. Congenital heart defects are just that, defects. Some people are born with short thumbs, some people have small teeth, some people are born predisposed to cancer, and some people are born with a heart condition and that is their "defect". Just because something happened in utero doesn't mean that the mother caused it!

  28. 28

thank god that sweet baby is ok. good for heigl - she is a giving person. very sweet.

  29. 29

if scars stopped folks from wearing bikini's i'd turn the jersey shore into a slasher film!

  30. 30

I'm 26 years old, and had open heart surgery when I was 9 months old which has grown into a pretty big scar. The fact that she states, "She has a scar, so she won’t be wearing bikinis…" is not a right in my book at all. I've had a pacemaker since I was baby and it took me 24 years to be confident enough in my own skin and finally get out there and rock a two-piece in front of strangers. I've learned that yes, it's battle scar that makes you who you are and it definitely shows how far you've come. I hope as a mother Katherine Heigl doesn't make her daughter feel like she's not beautiful because of it… and may she use better choice of words during her future interviews. Thank you.

  31. 31

I not only like her but also respect her…she helps animals too.

  32. 32

So she's not mentally handicapped then? That's good, at least her problem is fixable.

  33. 33

Re: cheebs – She was put in the special needs category by the adoption system in Korea, not by her parents.

  34. 34

I had believe that Naleigh actually had Down Syndrome - statistics show that about 50% of children with Down Syndrome have some type of heart defect. As a mom to a child born with heart defects I am offended by Katherine's comment about Naleigh not being able to wear a bikini because of her scar. I have taught my son, who is 7, that his scar is a badge of honor, something to be proud of. He calls it his zipper and loves to show it off to anyone. He runs around shirtless and never thinks twice about it! I hate to think that little Naleigh will be raised thinking her scar is another type of defect. It is just part of who she is and she will always be beautiful, with or without the scar!!

  35. 35

    Re: cheebs

When you come from a country where orphans don't have the same opportunities in life that they may have in more developed countries moron. Where did you grow up? Were you an orphan? Chances are this kid would never have had that opportunity and would have died….

  36. 36

    Re: alihalley
Her sister is adopted from Korea, so she is following in her parents footsteps. So what she adopted an Asian baby, at least she adopted instead of using a surrogate or IVF.

  37. Lyns says – reply to this

I love Katherine Heigl! And her little baby is a chubby bunny, so cute!

  38. 38

Re: pusspuss – I never said I wasn't happy that Naleigh got adopted by someone who could give her the care she needs, I think that's great. I was unaware that they categorized her in the special needs category in Korea, not the states. Sorry.

  39. 39

don't think she has downs…doesn't really have a syndromic face. probably just your garden variety atrial septal defect which is absolutely not a big deal at all.

not thrilled with her bikini comments either.

  40. 40

Re: HateMachine – Stole the words right out of my mouth!
He's so quick to judge, but wants no one to judge him.

What a lucky little girl. Blessings and good fortune to the entire family.

  42. 42

Huh? No bikinis cuz she has a scar?! Wow. Just wow. I would think there would be a TON of other reasons not to wear a bikini… but cuz of a scar?! My best friend had heart surgery when she was younger (age 9!), she has a lovely, and big, scar right there between her breasts (she's now 32!)……… she wears bikinis!!!!!!! It's just something she's "always" had!! Interesting!!

  43. 43

I'm glad the baby is alright and in good hands. Congrats to the happy family.

  44. 44

Don't get me wrong, I think she did a very very good thing adopting, especially a baby with that kind of problem, but I think that the bikini comment revealed her for what she really is: a superficial dumbass!
How can you possibly say, because this is clearly what she's implying, "she has a scar so OF COURSE she won't be wearing a bikini, but it's fine by us, because we're sooooo cool". how idiotic is this????? she's ALIVE because of that scar, she shoudn't be ashamed of it in any way.
stupid people always find a way to show their true self…

  45. 45

a little scar? eh i'm sure it'll be gone in a few years.

  46. 46

Re: Pokepoo – First of all the baby is KOREAN not Chinese. The only person that looks stupid and lazy to group all asians as chinese is YOU. If I call you British or French just because you look white would that be okay to you?? The only person that looks stupid for making such an ignorant comment is you. But then again I guess I can't expect much from a person that says ' white ppl should only adopt white kids and chinese should only adopt chinese kids.' what an ignorant f*ck

  47. 47

Re: annuus – Y do you hate ppl that adopt asian kids?? what have they ever done to you?! Do you have that much hatred and bitterness in your own life to hate people that are saving kids lives and making a difference in this world? If you hate them bc you're bitter that they are supposedly picking asian kids over your own race (white I assume) why don't you go out there and adopt one yourself instead of just sitting their bitchin about it?
