While Equality California has campaigned relentlessly to pass a bill to recognize May 22nd as Harvey Milk day, the Kern High School District in Bakersfield has passed a motion to prevent schools from teaching about the famed openly gay politician who dedicated his life to help promote LGBT equality!

Unbelievable. Way to ignore all of the good and significant changes Milk lost his life to make in our government and society!

    Have you actually studied what Milk did? He got elected. That's pretty much it. He did not pass any legislation for LGBT. In fact, the two significant things he did was get elected and be murdered. Changes? No changes. A straight man won that argument even after all the work Milk put into trying to be a representative for his district. Ultimately, I think Milk did what "someone else" would have done eventually. But to say he deserves to be "taught" in schools… no, I think not. He just passed through a barrier. It wasn't walking on water, like you seem to think.

    I'm from Bakersfield originally, and was in KHSD for all four years of high school. This, I am sad to say, is totally normal for the area, but absolutely ridiculous. I think Harvey Milk did do something important, regardless of what others think. He was an influential person in California. Makes me sad to claim Bakersfield as my hometown. :(

    Some people just don't want their kids exposed to adult themes of sexuality until they are ready…and as parents THEY want to make those decisions…not allow the state school system to dictate when & how children must be tutored/indoctrinated as to the historical significance of Harvey Milk — who by most accounts was a bit of a self aggrandizing pig. Personally I would be more inclined to teach my kids about Stonewall which has more credence as a true civil rights event. If you don't get out of the schools you are not going to make more friends…don't you realize that?     Harvey Milk is celebrated as a Civil Rights leader because of his vehement campaining against the 1978 Briggs Initiative that would have made it illegal for any gay person to work in a public school in California in any capacity.

    It was tragic that he was murdered, but putting that aside he should be celebrated and honored because of how his fighting against this Proposition not only lead to a huge defeat of what would have been an atricious law, but brought to California's attention the rights of gay people to not be treated as suspect simply because of who there are.

    I am from Bakersfield, & Am in the Kern High School District. Although I don't want to live in Bakersfield, it is a Great place. I believe Gays should have some equality rights, But i do not thing we should celebrate or be taught about it in our High School. If we are not allowed to talk about God or anything Religious then we shouldn't be talking about Milk and what he was. It's unfair.     While Milk may not have passed any laws that were concrete in the absolute equality for the LGBT community, he certainly paved the way by openly fighting for the cause. His efforts to jump start a movement are indelible.

    I am originally from Bakersfield and I understand the political and social culture in the area. I am certainly not shocked at the opposing views. The fact of the matter is that people as a whole have a choice to educate themselves and those who are passionate about the movement toward equality for the LBGT community will remember every day that Harvey Milk was the first person in politics to openly demand and advocate civil rights for gays. I feel that his efforts and the resulting momentum toward equality are worthy of recognition.

    Who doesn't love a day off work, anyway? Not that the vast majority employers will include the day as a PTO day.

    This is about increasing awareness; there is nothing wrong with educating oneself with facts regarding history, regardless of personal opinion regarding the "rightness" of the subject matter.

    Look, when it comes down to it, there are way more important things for us to focus on than getting a day off for someone who didn't exactly affect the Bakersfield community. I am from Bakersfield, and while there is a lot of bad, it is completely outweighed by the good. I was wonderfully educated, and have amazing family and true friends that all grew up and live in Bakersfield.     I resent this and some of these comments. First all of, Bakersfield is not full of people whom you call hicks; yes, there are some, but they by no means make up the majority. Second, a city isn't homophobic just because it voted against this. There are a variety of possible reasons. Thirdly, Bakersfield has always been incredibly conservative. If Bakersfield were somewhere else, not liberal California, this wouldn't be a big issue. Lastly, just as individuals disparage gay people as choosing their lifestyles and being immoral, so do gay individuals disparage conservative people as being immoral and hateful. I'm gay. I'm conservative. I'm Protestant. I live in Bakersfield. I support gay rights. And I think that many of us, gay and conservative, need to be a little more tolerant.

    There are many educated persons in the Bakersfield area who are also liberal-minded. The KHSD has been run by a conservative team for years and there are teachers and parents who disagree with their decisions. Myself, my spouse, and my parents are and were teachers. I would like you to know that there are teachers here who care for, support, and protect the rights of gay and lesbian students, and have stood up against students who have made derogatory statements or even used the distasteful epithets associated with homosexuality to the point of requesting a union representative for support during a meeting with school officials. I am well aware of the shortcomings and stigma attached to being a Bakersfield resident, but it would truly be skewed thinking to assume that the only persons residing here do not possess intellects, educations, or progressive political agendas.

    My country has the separation of church and state and we have equal rights for all. We have never banned gays from the military. We have had openly gay members of Parliament since the late 60s early 70's we have had transgenders members of Parliament. Our tax system recognizes gay couples as couples, Australia would have national gay marriage with one more vote in the senate. Our education system is one of the best in the world, always ahead of the US in the rankings.
    I also have US citizenship and when I visit it is weird to go to a country that seems to be going backwoods I remember when the US used to call itself the land of the free and some people believed it… No one does anymore. Everyone in the EU, Canada, Australia and New Zealand have more freedom than the US.

    I think that there are more important issues that have occurred with the Kern High School District and LGBT equality. For example, when they decided to block a series of articles showcasing LGBT students at East Bakersfield High School. I think this is a more direct violation of free speech laws whereas teaching or not teaching about Harvey Milk isn't so much a direct violation. Also, it is important to understand the underpinnings of the Board of Trustees. For example, Chad Vegas who is usually behind these sorts of things, is also a pastor in Bakersfield… Need I say more. As someone from Bakersfield I understand how depressing stuff like this is, but I think it is important to focus on who actually legislates instead of giving the responsibility to Bakersfield in general.

    I have to stand up for the Bako girls and boys. Bakersfield has been fighting the ban on Harvey Milk day for weeks. However, Ken Mettler has forced this ban upon our community and students to further his political career. He wants to appear as conservative as possible in order to pull ahead in the upcoming primaries. Now our entire community is paying for the decision of just 3 men on a school board.

    I'm from Bakersfield and am now going to a very liberal school in North Hollywood. While I firmly believe in equality for everyone, regardless of their race, gender, or sexual preference, I don't think the Harvey Milk day not passing is that big of a deal. I celebrate Harvey Milk and what he did for the LGBT community, but he wasn't that big of a point in history. For members of the LGBT community, he has probably made much more of an impact. I hate discrimination of any kind but I also can't stand the often confrontational stance in these kind of issues. Gay people shouldn't shove it in our faces that they're gay. While I fully support everyone's freedoms and rights to choose their own lifestyle, Perez and other advocates for the LGBT community can be a bit much. They think that their issues are the most important, their struggles are the worst. But yet, Perez sits and makes fun of addicts and other celebrities who have fallen into addiction. It's disgusting, really.
