Movie Theaters Raise Prices AGAIN!

This is getting to be too much!

Several theaters are planning on charging $20 for for adult tickets to IMAX showings of "Shrek Forever After" in 3-D.

The change in prices haven't officially been announced, however, the new prices were already posted on the movie ticket site Fandango.com.

This comes just eight weeks after theater operators raised prices as much as 26%, which was the steepest hike in the past decade.

The question is whether or not people will be willing to pay these high prices.

BTIG LLC media analyst Richard Greenfield states:

"With the state of the economy remaining questionable, we worry pricing is simply moving up too quickly. The danger is scaring consumers away from the movie theaters."

Sure, slap a 3-D logo on it and raise your prices! This is just another ploy that movie studios are doing to make mediocre films and take all your money!

What do U think? Would you pay $20 to see Shrek 4???

No way, Shrek is not worth that much…..come to think of it very few pictures today are worth that :/

  2. 2

i wouldn't pay 20.00 to see any movie in the theaters. and to be honest, i don't go to the theaters anyway because the prices are to high to begin with. i wait, what…like a month before they come out on dvd anyway.

  3. 3

Just going to encourage people to watch it on the net…

  4. 4

IMAX is a Canadian company. They've finally found a way to fuck themselves. Check out their financial history last decade … and see that they recently gambled their very existence on a 'bet' that 3-D will take off and the world will want to see more 3-D movies on BIG SCREEN IMAX FORMAT !!!
Well, there's only a handful of IMAX-capable theatres in the world.
Anyway, they'll probably have a new share issue announcement, trying to sell more shares to suckers on the exchanges to splurge on building IMAX theatres everywhere !!
Thank God naked short selling hasn't been banned yet in North America … SHORT IMAX NOW !!!

  5. 5

Nope. Not even for my kids.

  6. 6

Wow! They are really pushing it. I took my nephews to see How To Train Your Dragon in 3D - it was $14 a ticket. They did not offer 3D glasses that fit the kids! If you are going to make a 3D movie for kids at least make some glasses that fit the kids.

  7. 7

I remember when I was younger they used to charge around $6. Once it hit 10 bucks I said no way. I'll just wait for it to be on TV, or if I'm really interested I'll give On Demand 5 bucks for it.

  8. 8

I wouldn't pay 20 bucks fo any movie. I just wait most of the time till it comes out on Netflix or we just go to a matinee if it's something we really wanna see.

  9. 9

    wow that is crazy lol

  10. 10

20 bucks is WAY to expensive to see a movie especially when we are in a failing economy.

  11. 11

Re: angelbaby4always – "i wouldn't pay 20.00 to see any movie in the theaters."
Thank you well said if that's what is going to start costing the man who sale's bootleg movies by the 7-Eleven is going to start making serious cash…

  12. 12

I live in Australia, and all 3D movies are around the $20 mark. Avatar was $25! Way too expensive

  13. 13

I would not pay $20 for ANY movie I want to see. I'd rather just buy it for $17 when it comes out on DVD.

  14. 14

$20 to see a movie and $20 for popcorn and a Soda. Way to rip off the consumers. Would rather rent a movie from redbox for $1 and make my own Sh1tty popcorn.

  15. 15

    When Hell freezes over.

  16. 16

$20 is NOT too much. It is TOO CHEAP!
I want theaters to charge $50-$60 per ticket. Or even $100+ per ticket.
Then the tech companies would speed up their development of home theater technology.
It's all gonna be comin' over The Net and into the home. The sooner, the better.
3-D. Super resolution. Holograms. All in the home.
    Theater operators: Charge More!!! Please!!!

  17. 17

Dam these money hungry scums just get more and more greedy. Then they don't want people to download anything. Not only that but the food stand is ridiculous. $20 is WAYYY to much for any movie. Especially now that all there is are remakes of other movies.

  18. 18

The only time i see a movie in theatre is if there are big special effects. For some reason i think that makes the movie more worth while seeing on a big screen. But movies like shrek…well i just wait until they come out on DVD.

  19. 19

We saw it tonight, but not at an Imax theater. We talked about going to one though, next month, to see it again - but it would cost over 100 for all of us to go and that's not happening. Fuck that.

  20. 20

Hell the FUCK NO. Ripoff. No movie is worth 20 bucks.

  21. 21

No thanks. IMAX can suck it. My 3 kids can live w/o it.

  22. 22

Hell no. $20 is WAY too much, I don't care if it's in 4-D!

  23. 23

ok i wanted to go and i will if it stays the normal 13 $ if not ill download it !

if comparing 1997 prices to today's TITANIC would still be #1 and not AVATAR

this change will crush that shrek 4 in box office

  24. 24

i don't understand. is it IMAX that is raising the prices? or just the movie? if it is IMAX, why so much hate?

  25. 25

They just want to create another box office "record"

  26. 26

I would never pay $20.00 for a movie ticket, let alone a 'shrek cartoon about ugly Green fat people? Give me a break! 3-D won't end up being the future of going to the movies if they think we're going to shell out that kind of money for 30-minutes of commercials and 90-minutes of film, not to mention what they're going to be charging us for snacks the day after tomorrow?

  27. Beccx says – reply to this

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA! I'll just sit back and wait till they show it on the disney channel.

  28. 28

  29. 29

Regular movies here in Jap costs around $17 per person. 3-D costs $20 so psh. I'm sticking with the net.

  30. 30

  31. 31

$20 for a movie ticket? NO WAY!! Thats ridiculous!

  32. 32

hell no! I used 2 go often but ever since they raised the prices I only go maybe twice a year. If they keep on raising the praises they're going to loose more $$$ than they can make.

  33. 33

jsut another reason why 3D movies are overrated.

  34. 34

    OMG!! $20 that's too much!!

  35. 35

im thinking about going to a DRIVE IN…yup..a drive in in milford nh to see this and iron man 2 :-)

  37. 37

No way! We recently went to Paris where the theaters are CLEAN, reasonably priced, and full of amenities. The theaters here have little to offer besides sticky floors, seats full of holes, stale popcorn and overpriced soda. Have no desire to see anything here….

  38. 38

NO WAY. I wish everyone would just stay home until they drop the price to $10.00. If people are stupid enough to pay that price then it's only a matter of time before the prices are raised again.

  39. 39

Note to IMAX: the recession continues. Thanks for your attention to this matter :)

  40. 40

fuck no i wouldnt pay that much! but of course someone will, sending the message to the theaters that its OK to raise prices that high. I'll just wait until Tuesday and go the the Cinelux terrific Tuesday deal where every movie is only $5 bucks! OR just pay $6.50 and go to the drive thru.

  41. 41

This video here is better than any 20 dollar 3D

    youtube watch?v=Lx8MRsEVRmU

  42. Blah5 says – reply to this

F- that crap, they only pay their employee's minimum wage. I dont watch movies b/c 10.00 per person plus 25.00 for popcorn and soda is way too much. People are still going to the movies but count me out, and I hope others stop too.

  43. 43

Oh my…here you go starting shit again. First of all, this isn't a regular movie theater, it's an IMAX theater. So it's not on a small screen it's on the huge IMAX screen. Secondly, it's in 3D…even regular theaters are charging an additional fee for 3D movies because it requires more maintenance than regular films.

  44. 44

  45. 45

New Zealand already pays $20 to see 3-D movies, get over it USA.

  46. 46

Ummm, are u for real??? No, no, no! Heck No! H to the E to the double L No! Ha ha. That is a big negative good buddy…lol.

  48. 48

utorrent dottttt commm is an interesting site.
The future of video is in downloading from The Net. Theaters are waaaaaay overpriced and too inconvenient.
    Just sayin'.

  49. 49

  50. 50

i don't go to the movies its to expensive, why would i spend that much when i can just wate 3 months and watch it in the comfort of my own home nakei with a beer and hot wings on my 52 inch firescreen the way god intended. if it does go up to $20 i really wont be going!

  51. 51

I don't even go to the theater to watch a movie. I watch movies only on tv and do it rarely. I just find most movies too long and boring.

  52. 52

That is insane. I haven't been to a movie in a while. I really haven't found anything interesting enough to go see. I certainly will not see Shrek 4 for twenty bux. Considering that the lead actors made 20 million a piece to lend their voice talents to the film, they should be paying us to go see the movie. Amen!

  53. 53

internet pirating here i come =] hollywood bye bye you go =]

  54. 54

oh wow.. that's a 25% increase for imax. that is outrageous. and i'm sure the more they continue these hikes, the higher piracy will be. bad all around.

  55. 55

  56. 56

Re: Sir-Bangs-Alot – and Re: bkfinest006 – HA! where's the like button! i was thinking the same thing!

  57. 57

I LOVE to see movies in theaters but they are going to end that life's pleasure for me…no I won't pay that kind of money to see a movie.

  58. 58

    Re: iSayEffU
your phrase doesn't make any sense. learn English, then come back.

  59. 59

    This is way overrated!

  60. 60

And they wonder why people pirate. Really? $20 for a movie when it will be on HBO next year or DVD/Netflix in 3 months.

  61. 61

  62. 62

No I will not pay that much and am really getting tired of every movie being in 3D just so they can charge more money. Screw them their movies aren't even worth it. Why would I pay $20 when I can pay that and own the movie when it comes on DVD.

  63. 63

I wouldn't pay $20 to see a movie even if I was staring in it. I hope people stay away and send a strong message to movie theaters. People need to show movie theaters that we won't pay $20 to get in and we're going to stop paying $20 for a bucket of popcorn.

  64. 64

Re: curiousred – I don't see anyone else complaining if you don't get it to bad.

  65. 65

No way! These prices are way out of control. I will wait until most of the movies are on cable. There is no way in hell that I would pay $80.00 for a family of 4 to see a movie!

  66. 66

LOL no. No wonder so many people are pirating movies nowadays, they're fucking themselves over.

  67. 67

I used to work at a movie theater, and they do FINE with lower prices. I worked at the nicest and brand new theater in my town and we charged $8.00 for an adult evening ticket and $10.00 for a 3D movie…

And honestly, they were fine. Movie theaters make a looot more money on concessions that people think. So that's just B.S.!

I won't pay that, I'll just rent it when it comes out.

  68. 68

I just saw it and I used my scene points to see it for FREE yay. Definetly not worth $20 but it was a cute movie

  69. 69

It would be one thing if they did something to make it worth 20 bucks, but the food is still crap the theatres haven't gotten any nicer yet they think were just going to keep on handing over more and more money? Good luck with that, I'll wait till it comes out on DVD and rent it from RedBox for a buck.

  70. MP says – reply to this

That is bullshit. I very rarely go to the movies, maybe once or twice a year for a big blockbuster or for my beloved Harry Potter. I stopped going mostly because of annoying people, but also because of cost. What the hell is there to do anymore that is reasonably priced? Can't go to a ball game, can't go to the movies, you have to pay a lot for parking and to get on the beach in NJ, it's too much. I don't know what's happening to this country, but it's not good.

  71. 71

Imax is always more expensive then regular movie theaters. That being said I still wouldn't pay $20 to see a movie, thats way to much.

  72. 72

No movie is worth that much! Fuck the 3D gimmick! They're making a circus!
No thanx. Fuck off you and your stupid "movie".

  73. 73

You couldn't pay *me* $20 to see it. It looks horrible. And besides, I don't go to the theater to get wallet raped, listen to jackasses talk throughout the movie, and have emo twerps text through the film. I'm sure in hell not going to pay $20 a pop for the "theater experience".

So, theater owners are crying because attendance is down in cinemas and they are raising prices to … get more asses in seats? Really? I think now is a good time to buy more Netflix stock.

I hope studios continue to fight back on theaters trying to prohibit them from releasing movies to DVD sooner.

  74. 74

hell no! prices are way to expensive already…do people not realize we are in a recession!! come on now why pay 20 dollars when you cna rent it for a dollar from redbox a few months later…sorry it wont be getting my 20 dollars!

  75. 75

For $20, I can buy the Blu-Ray. I'll never visit a theater ever again.

  76. 76

Isn't the idea of recycling the 3-d glasses is to avoid ticket prices rising. Well the few times that I saw 3-d movies I pretty much noticed that everyone was recycling the glasses. Now I wished I would have kept mine since they are so greedy. Heres an idea "How about cutting those celebrities salary by like 26%.

  77. 77

20 dollars for a movie? i don't care if I feel like im flying or my vagina is as light as a cotton ball. that's just ridiculous…you can buy it in Blu-Ray for less than that. i'm in media, they are just overdoing it.

  78. 78

You're kind of a douchenozzle, you know that? It's $20.00 for an ADULT ticket to an ADULT ONLY showing. The IMAX in Seattle is doing the same thing for people that want to see these movies without annoying children in the theatre. I bought 3 $20.00 tickets for the midnight ADULT ONLY showing of Eclipse in June. I would pay the extra bucks to see the film without a little girl screaming in my ear about some Shark Boy ripping her hymen. For all of you that are taking Perez as a news source, you gotta go live life.

  79. 79

Would you look at that. Movies are getting worse and prices are getting higher. Nice.

  80. koe says – reply to this

Thats why people download, they can't afford to go to the cinema, i remember less than 10 years ago the prices were like 10x cheaper and i didn't have to think twice about going and i saw loads of films in the cinema. Now I have to really want to see a film before i decide to go see it as I just don't have the money. So far this year i have only seen 2 films at the cinema.
If the film industry is having issues then its because the film prices are ridiculously high and I don't know anyone who sees films regularly in the cinema they just wait for it to come on tv so they can decide if its worth buying a dvd.

  81. 81

HUH…. no wonder torrent sites have become so popular……

  82. 82

Hell no I would not pay $20 to see shrek or anything else, shit I don't even pay $20 for dvd's or now this blu ray crap. If everybod stayed home just one week from the movies in this country, they'd drop the prices so fast that your hair would turn white. To quote my lovely grandma "knock it off and get your head out of your ass!" Love you nanna.

  83. 83

I saw it in 2D at the matinee price and it almost wasn't worth the $6.75. It was decent, just not great, and certainly not worth $20.

  84. 84

PEOPLE: DON'T GO. It's as simple as that. These prices are ridiculous. These people are taking advantage of cinema-goers because we're turning up in droves for movies. DON'T see the 3D, go to regular showings and show them we won't put up with this.

  85. Eve29 says – reply to this

  86. 86

I only paid that for Avatar, and it was well worth the time and money. Movie studios are overestimating how much people are willing to pay. Even if I have the extra change in my pocket, there is no way I am justifying paying that kind of money for a movie. Bad move.

  87. 87

Any wonder torrent sites are so popular? I wouldn't pay 50 cents to see that trash.

  88. 88

    Not no but hell no!!!

  89. 89

No wonder people download movies online.

  90. 90

and here i thought Caribbean Cinemas were being pricey cause they were charging $7.50 for the 3D

  91. 91

I can't think of a movie that would be worth it and I am serious. I usually wait till a movie has been out for at least a week or more and go when the theater isn't super busy because I don't want the theater super swamped with rude idiots who talk all the time, and that is one reason I would never pay $20, and then I don't care if the screen is 1000 ft tall. I mean how big is a human head anyway? Does it really need to be that tall? I want comfort not a big screen, and I am not that comfortable in a crowded theater with people yacking all over the place. Maybe if the movie was supposed to be super great, and it was a one time every few years thing, but I only really go to the movies every few months as it is. I saw The Box last winter, and Avatar and I don't think I have been since. Nothing has excited me into the theater yet. I'll be there for SITC2, but after it has been out over a week at least.

  92. 92

hell no i will not pay to see shrek

  93. 93

Here in holland we pay something around 9 euros, that about 11,5 dollars. Stupid prices!

  94. 94

thats insane. you could pay $20 to buy the movie on dvd.
or you could wait a month and pay a $1 at redboxx.

  95. 95

I haven't heard price uping for Toy Story 3.

  96. 96

personally i love shrek, but no i won't pay that much. i wouldn't pay that much for any movie.

  97. 97

Yes, they just scared me off. We were planning on taking the kids to see Shrek on the last day of school, but we can find something else to do for that much. $20 will buy the DVD.

  98. 98

No way would I pay $20 for a movie. I live in a little town, so thankfully we have a small independent theater about 15 minutes away that's $4. They don't have 3D, but who cares? 3D is interesting and everything, but it's not worth the little bit of money I have to spend on extras, and going to the movies is definitely an extra.

  99. 99

You know I pretty much gave up on going to the movies a while ago; I wouldn't mind the price increases actually so much, if the theatres could keep the numbskulls who chat throughout the film OUT. In the last 20 times I've been to the theatre - even in the middle of the day when there were only a handful of people there - there is ALWAYS someone loudly talking non-stop. Ask them to shut up, and they get defensive and hostile - like they have a right to do it! I've nearly gotten into altercations with some people because they are such ill-bred animals. So - why WOULD someone pay $20 for a disrupted experience, when you can simply wait and watch the film at home in peace?

  100. 100

in colombia we pay $1.00 for normal movies $3.00 for 3d, so yeah what a scam
