The Most Terrifying Grey's Anatomy Ever!

| Filed under: TV NewsMandy MoorePatrick DempseyEllen Pompeo

We have one word to sum up last night's season finale of Grey's Anatomy: Emmys.

Emmys all around. One for Ellen Pompeo. One for Sandra Oh. One For Chandra Wilson. One for Mandy Moore . The list goes on and on and on.

The episode was surreal, validating a series we kind of thought was on its way out. If they had writing like this every week, they'd be on forever!

A lot of Grey's Anatomy fans had trouble sleeping last night after what will probably go down in history as the most heartbreaking and terrifying two hours of the show in its history.

Seattle Grace finds itself under attack by a crazed, grieving gunman, who fans will recognize from an earlier episode where his wife was taken off life support. This man has one goal - kill Dr. McDreamy, but ends up leaving a wave of destruction at the hospital that no one could have seen coming. If you watched the first seven minutes of the episode, you know that Alex Karev is shot right from the start. Things don't go too well for him from there, but luckily, his GF little Grey and McSteamy find him and save his life. (Now if he could only get over effing Katherine Heigl…)

Mandy Moore guest starred this week as a patient. We have no idea what her condition was, but it wasn't life threatening enough to stop her from assisting Dr. Bailey from trying to save the life of another surgeon that was gunned down. In one of the most shocking scenes of the show, the gunman pulls Dr. Bailey from her place of hiding, points a gun to her head and asks if she is a surgeon. She lies and tells him she is nurse, which results in him sparing her. That scene, that one scene - 10 Emmys! 20! Do they have something like a lifetime one where you just keep getting one over and over again?

But the pinnacle of the evening involved the show's remaining core three characters. By the end of the first hour, we watch Dr. Derek Shepard get shot and lie dying in the hospital. It is up to Christina, who is the only heart surgeon still in the hospital, to save his life. Things become that much more complicated when the gunman finds Christina operating on Derek, puts the gun to her head and insists that she stop or he will kill her. She doesn't, but instead helps trick the gunman into thinking she let Derek die on the table once Meredith arrives and begs for him to shoot her instead. Emmy for Ellen. Emmy for Sandra.

In the end, Derek lives, the gunman shots himself, and the McBaby that Meredith had just learned she was carrying is miscarried. A pretty sad note to end on.

The night was a whirlwind of drama, suspense and tears. Just how television should be.

We're still not really over it all!

Did U watch last night's Grey's? What did U think?

  2. 2

OMG!…This was the BEST EPISODE EVER!…

  3. 3

Great episode. They need to work this kind of magic next season for the whole season. Emmy nod for poor girl who has the crush on McDreamy-I think her name is April. She was great, too.

MOST INSANE EPISODE EVER!!! I was going to stop watching this show after this season as it lacked soo much. But this epsiode was the best finale i have EVER seen on tv.

  5. 5

Brilliant Brilliant Brilliant…i cried soo much when the surgeon that bailey was looking after died…

  6. 6

OMFG! I was jumping off the couch, i was screaming, i was crying, I was screaming again , i was covering my face, crying again, screaming again! Definatly wore me out! BEST GREY"S EVER!!!!! MEREDITH AND CHRISTINA, I LOVE YOU!

  7. 7

YES to an emmy nod for the girl who plays APRIL! her scene with the gun poitned out her, was amazing acting! i hope she gets reconized for it and i hope she is back for a bigger role next season!

  8. 8

Such a great episode, one of the best season finales that I have ever seen. I was on pins and needles the entire 2 hours!!!!

  9. 9

    It was unbelievable!!!

  10. 10

  11. 11

Yang and Bailey did the best acting in these 2 episodes that I've ever seen on Grey's, hands down.

  12. 12

    one word!! AMAZING!!
i loved this show from the very beginning.. it has redeemed itself for this past craptastic season!! wow!! WOW!!!

  13. 13

Yes I did and I remember yelling at the TV in shock at least one time!
Excellent story without seeming contrived and wonderful acting….

  14. 14

it was the best finale ever!!! i could not sleep a wink and i was shaking the first hr……

  15. 15

I cried more than once in those 2 hours. Best. Show. Ever. I was completely shocked at how many people were shot, I didn't expect the number to be so high :( This was by far the best season. I cannot wait until fall, there are so many story lines and I can't wait to see what happens. I hope Dr. Webber takes over as Chief again, McDreamy doesn't seem right at it. I am glad Christina & Owen finally know where they stand. Alex and Lexi are cute, but I was hoping her and McSteamy would get back together…….anyhow. Thats enough for me Ha Ha. ♥

  16. 16

omg. best episode ever!…so glad they didn't kill off Jackson!

  17. 17

It was so seriously brutal & awesome that I was screaming at the TV & on FB w/ my friends all of us going nuts over it. It was the reason why I started watching the show - the intensity that it has seriously been lacking. I was on the edge of my seat the entire time.

  18. 18

    S E R I O U S L Y ! ! ! ! ! !

  19. 19

I was so stressed out watching it!!! Although, I didn't like the way it ended

  20. 20

Best episode of any show I have ever seen on tv!!

  21. 21

I can't stop thinking about this episode. AMAZING, AMAZING, AMAZING!!!!! I was in shock when Reed and Alex were shot, and then it just continued on for 2 hours. I don't think I have EVER been this amazed by a TV show. Bring on the Emmy's and Golden Globes, they deserve it.

  22. 22

I didn't sleep well at all. My blood pressure was through the roof last night after watching it! By far the best episode in the series history!!

  23. 23

holy moly! i was hooked from the first second of this episode, ABSOLUTELY amazing! a few parts were a bit overdone however 99% wasn't! This is officially the best episode yet :) i cried, i was joyous, i was mad, i felt empathy UGH any emotion out there I had!
if this dosnt receive some kind of notoriety then ill be PISSED
i hope the producers, actors, everyone who worked on this knows how wonderful the episode was :) LOOOOOOVED IT

  24. 24

that was the best fucking episode ever!!!!! every single moment was fantastic! i cried when the guy Bailey was trying to save died! and meredith miscarrying her mcdreamy baby how sad was that!
good thing i recorded it on my tv..now i can watch it again… fantastic work!

  25. 25

i LOVED it :) Mandy Moore was a great guest star and the episode was very good :)

  26. 26

ABSOLUTE BEST EPISODE EVER! I cried, screamed, stopped breathing at some moments… it was CRAZY!

  27. 27

seriously the BEST grey's anatomy episode EVER.

  28. 28

That episode was absolutely brilliant. Seriously, I almost took a heart attack because it was so suspenseful and every time something seemed like it would be okay there was another twist! I loved it!

  29. 29

  30. 30

Fantastic. They need more plots like that for all the romances to play off of. It was great to have so many of the true feelings and fear facing out there, all brought on by this crisis.Wow. I don't usually watch this show, but am glad I did not miss last night.

  31. 31

I loved this episode. Great writing and great acting. At the end of the show, however, my only thought was where are they going to go from here? Most of the characters have resolved their life/relationship issues. It felt a little like the last year of ER. Will next year be it's last. I hope not.

  32. 32

This was the best ending to a show that I have ever watched. It was amazing and kept you on your toes the whole 2 hours. But as far as the character "April" I was shouting one moment for the gunman to shoot her just to shut her up and then again for someone to slap her. That was the worst part of the 2 hours. The rest was amazing. And the first female who was shot in the head….OMG the way they wrote that in the script was amazing!! Awesome show!! And thankfully they didnt leave you hanging and waiting for the next season to see if Mcdreamy lived or died. I hate shows that do that. I agree with Perez..Emmy's all around!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. 33

unbelievable ridiculous, is what it was. farfetched, cheesy, impossible, please, give me a break. tv keeps getting more and more overly dramatic. this kind of television is made for people like Perepig, for sure.

  34. 34

  35. 35

EXCELLENT! They were all great, but Chandra has got to be the BEST actress on television - EVER! She never ceases to amaze me!

  36. mmm77 says – reply to this

Amazing! The best episode ever. I cried, screamed and was glued to the TV for the whole 2 hours.

  37. 37

  38. 38

best season finally of any show ever… lovedit on the edge of my seat through the whole episode.

  39. 39

OMFG - I thought I would have a heart attack! Such emotion. And they all should get Emmys and Golden Globes and every other kind of award there is! This is the only network show I watch and it did not disappoint. I want to watch it again because I'm sure with my crying, gasping, etc., I missed some stuff.

  40. 40

ok, i have to say the episode was great tv the first 10 min alone was crazy and i couldnt stop watcing and i dont even watch it, secondly, chandra wilson, if she doesnt with SAG, Golden globe and emmy this year, theirs a problem, directing was awsome, that being said, ER did an episode similar to that one in like 2000 where their was a gunman looking for Dr. Green and terrorizing the hospital.. in the form of wiritng Grey's should not win the award, they steal many ideas from ER and other shows a lot of times. ER is still the best medical drama to hit Tv and its hidden by the fact of the last three years it was on the air. When TR was killed off the show on Grey's his body was unrecognizable because he was hit by a bus… On ER the black guy on House played a intern who was hit by a train, and his body was unrecognizable, in both instances noone knew who they were until they read the ID, its happened many other times, the show last night was great

  41. 41

My power was out for the first 2 minutes of the show but thanks to YOU Perez I was able to see the first few minutes a couple days ago on your site!
This was one episode I did NOT see coming. I know you had mentioned that Dr. Reed and the other Dr.'s contract were up or they were going to be written off but talk about a way to end their characters!!
Best show of the season by far. I was crying for most of the episode. There were so many scenes that were amazing. I mean Christina holding back Meredith while the gunman is pointing the gun at Dr. Shepard?!?! The OR scene, the Mandy Moore/Bailey moments, Alex/lil' Grey/McSteamy…..the list goes on!!
I guess with Dr. Shepard having to recover from heart surgery and the fact that Dr. Webber didn't take a drink from that flask leads me to believe he might have his job back as Chief after all there at Seattle Grace/Mercy West.

  42. 42

Re: greysfan3 – Uuuuummmm actually Webber is shown coming out of that room where he and the gunman were. He shakes the Police Chief's hand.

  43. 43

So completely BAD ASS!!! I am still realing from the ep last night and thankfully recorded it so I can watch it again . It was beyond incrediable and truly the best episode yet!!! Kathryn who?? So on the money for Emmys this year, incrediable actors and killer script!!

  44. 44

I've just seen it…I've never been interested in that series and I never watched it.
those 2 last episodes were the first& unfortunately last ones I've ever seen.
    and they were amazing.
    *.* I'm still in tears & in shock =D

  45. 45

OMFG!!! It was the best! I had to take a nerve pill from all of the anxiety!

  46. 46

THANK YOU! I felt crazy all day b/c I keep thinking of the episode!!!…even my boyfriend who HATES the show was glued and felt anxious afterwards! lol! It was amazing, well done….but the ONLY silly part was…how the hell did the gunmen get into the operating room where Derrick was being operated on without going through the scrub room? I mean, really? He spent a whole hour looking for him originally, then he manages to find him in an operating room??? STILL I was ON EDGE for two hours…amazing writing (just don't read into any one thing too much, lol)

  47. 47

greysfan3…yea we do, it showed him at the end pf the episode talkin to the police officer…the killer shot himself…

  48. 48

TO Grey'sfan3 : Yes we do find out, he came out @ the end.. perhaps u didn't watch the last 2 minutes?

  49. 49

Awesome, wow wow wow, it reminded me of the good old days of ER. WOW!!!!!!!!!

  50. 50

Oh my god!!! I just watched it at abc.com and that was the most intense episode ever!! Their performances were amazing!!!

  51. 51

I have never watched this show before but saw some previews for the finale and decided to watch it.. It was amazing! Best finale I've seen! Great acting! I wish it wasn't the finale now :(

  52. 52

You said it all…still can't stop thinking about it!! Amazing!!

  53. 53

This episode was awful and such a let down because the PREMISE was GREAT! The acting was GREAT, the writing was unbelievable, even for tv. Let me get this straight. A shooter is coming towards a WOODEN door with a small window. There is a chair 5ft away. Why wouldn't you A. Lock the door B. put the chair against the door and jam it.. and hide out of site. Better question- Why didn't the SWAT person chase after the shooter after he shot him? Why wouldn't Bailey have tried to open up the dr in the room and remove the bullet, instead of letting him die on the floor? The OR part was great- didn't expect him to be in the room- kind of funny how he got in when there is only 1 entrance and somehow he didn't pass Meredith or April.. However, how is it possible that a man holding people hostage on 3 side of him & turning away from them at various times and somehow wasn't stabbed with a surgerical knife/needle/saw/something? and/or taking down by the Military doctor when he turned to Christina? Seriously.. Am I the only person who thinks if these people were in this situation they wouldn't had fought harder or opened up the doctors on the tables instead of complaining there is NO way to get him to the OR and let him die? I hope that I'm not a Emergency situation with these type of dr's. I want one that would help me with whatever they had! Hello.. Military dr would've opened him up with a PEN or something.. That is what I wanted to see.

  54. 54

Amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I loved it. I have seen every episode and will watch every one to come!

Re: greysfan3 – Did your Tivo cut you off? Weber was shown alive after the gunman shot himself and Derek was in recovery.

  56. 56

OMG!!!!!! Shondra pulled it out of the bag. I think I wet myself a little when he pulled Miranda Bailey out from under the bed!!!!! They were all great, mandy Moore included, I agree Emmy's all around!!!I can only hope the Lost finale is as good!

  57. 57

    the BEST EPISODE!!!
i stopped watching more than a year ago, i just happened to turn in on within the first 15 min.
LOVED this episode!! will def watch next season.
why can't more shows be exciting like this? even GA lost its way for awhile.

  58. Lene says – reply to this

Mer should not have lost her baby!!!!!!!!!! :(

I was hoping the whole time the episode would end with Mer telling Derek while he was recovering that they are having a baby:(((((

PLEASE shonda Rhimes, give us a MD baby in s7.

  59. 59

working in a hospital it hits close to home in the sense sad grieved people arent in their right state of mind… and it shocks me seattle grace has no locked doors or wings that require a badge. anyway, i couldnt sleep lastnight as i was just imagining those people were real and their stories were real and prayed for them and their recovery from the traumatic ordeal. i hope upon hope it was a false miscarry (granted with the amnt of bleeding we didnt see seemed to be severe…) and that we come to find some joy in that her baby is safe. i am afraid that this will damage mer to much and we will have another season 4 where she tries to drown herslef in the bathtub and it takes derek an entire season to get her to recover.

all i know is that i need to summer to recover from that episode… and that i hope that the creator of the show gives the series a way out as a whole group that is wonderful and full of happiness b/c those effing people need it.. and to finally become attendings and wear navy dammit!

  60. 60

i live in finland and i think we see this episode like after six month… but i think that i need to watch this somewhere in online :D

  61. 61

  62. 62

meredith is definetly going back to the dark place after loosing her mcnugget!!!
bailey will most likely join her as well as she will be in the dark place feeling the massive amounts of guilt for not saving percy, and lying about her identity to spare her life. oh ya shes definetly going to become a resident of the dark place.
meredith will lie to mcdreamy about their little mcnugget, or just never tell him, which will finally bring back the much needed drama between the two. meredith and dereks love quarrels MAKE that show!
lexipedia is a moron for even liking alex. shes setting herself up for heartbreak bc HES CLEARLY NOT OVER HIS FREAKING WIFE!!!! she needs to hop back in the sack with mcsteamy, let him put a ring on it, and have mindblowing mcsteamy sex and get to reign queen as mcsteamys tamer.
    thats whats up :)

  63. 63

Re: greysfan3 – webber walked out fine at the end the gunman shot himself

  64. 64

best episode ever!!!!!!!!!!!! it did get frustrating sometimes like bailey was willing to have a screaming freak out and attract all the attention in the world but couldn't run to try to find someone to help carry percy or just drag him down the stairs… and when clark takes the bandages from callie he was basically handing her the gun, he was wounded, come on! take him down!!! grab that gun. in this day and age post 9/11, post columbine etc. people are far more willing to risk their lives… the writers should have shown that. you also wanted to be like you're in the pediatric ward, moron gunman!! i know arizona said "there's only kids here" but you wanted to hear it said again.. and again. i agree, the writing could have been better but the acting was absolutely amazing. my blood pressure was through ther roof :) i know it's just a tv show… haha.. all in all, i loved it. yay to grey's for bringing back the awesomeness!! and next season don't show a new episode then a repeat, then a new one then a repeat and so on. that sucked.

  65. 65

    Best Episode ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  66. 66

This was the best show i have ever seen!! I thought the acting was good when Meredith drownded…but this hands down is THE BEST GREYS ANATOMY I HAVE EVER SEEN!!! I bet Katherine Heigl is kicking herself in the ass right now. Greys has the best show ever, and she has a crappy movie coming out with Ashton Kutcher. LOSER!!! OMG! Emmys all around to the Greys cast! I was crying, I was screaming, I was shaking, I was on the edge of my seat, and I continued that pattern throughout the whole show. I never gave up on Grey's, and this is why. Last nights episode proved why it is the best drama on TV. If you missed it….you really missed out!

  67. 67

  68. 68

    Re: greysfan3 – a sniper shot him…the shooter

  69. 69

me and all of my friends that watch the show were FREAKING OUT! I knew it was going to be crazy but I had no idea what i was in for! it was beyond crazy! i'm still not over it. this is the reason why you should never say that grey's should be off the air! A-MAZ-ING!!!

  70. 70

That episode was INCREDIBLE…has to watch two episodes back2 back of 30 rock just to unwind & go to sleep!!!! The only other Grey's that matches this one is the Bomb episode w/ Cristina Ricci guest starring….EMMY EMMY EMMY!!!!

  71. 71

I'm sssooo tired today after watching this episode!!!…but it was worth it!!!…Best show on T.V. Why can't more t.v. shows be like this?..

  72. 72

MOST AMAZING EPISODE EVER!!!!… I was GLUED to my TV… I couldnt get over how amazing it was… I had anxiety every time there was a commercial… I laughed, cried, was in shock, ect… utterly fantastic! MORE MORE MORE!

  73. Lili2 says – reply to this

Re: greysfan3 – Yes we do, Weber came out at the end.

  74. 74

Re: greysfan3 – yes we saw webber walking around at the end of the show. so we can only assume the gunman shot himself but who knows. BUT we don't know what happened to Owen! I'm assuming he's ok too because Mer wasn't operating on him at the end.

  75. 75

MOST AMAZING GREYS EPISODE EVER!!! best season finale episode of all season finales this week… amazing… amazing… AMAZING!! Cannot wait until it's back for the next season…..

  76. 76

i was literally, sobbing the entire episode. phenomenal.

  77. 77

Re: greysfan3 – we saw webber at the end

  78. 78

my heart was pounding the entire show!

  79. 79

AMAZING ACTING and equally as amazing plot. I'm so glad they didn't leave us hanging too much with Alex, Derek, the baby, and Dr. Webber. VERY sad to know that Merideth miscarries, I hope there is a new McNugget soon :(

Honestly, I have never missed an episode of Grey's but I found Private Practice to be better this year EXCEPT for the season finales. Grey's has got me hooked AGAIN for next season :) I'm glad all you fellow fans survived it, it was rough - I caught myself holding my breath more than once!

  80. 80

    Most Epic Episode….EVER…

  81. 81

The BEST EPISODE! And like that there were no real cliffhangers….Bravo!

  82. 82

last night was the best episode all season…i yelled and cried a bit…i think they ll did some good acting last night.
What a good way to end the season!

  83. 83

best season finale since denny's season way back when. grey's fans are thrilled everywhere after that last night. every single person last night did an AMAZING acting job but of course Chandra, Sandra and Ellen stand out. Wow, wow, wow. This is exactly what grey's needed after a great season, an even better season finale to keep us all coming back for more in september. I think there is still hope for Lexie and Mark, I wouldn't count out that they will get back together cause I definitely think they will. Also, I hope Meredith gets pregnant again, that was so heartbreaking. THANK YOU GREY'S ANATOMY TEAM…..I LOVE YOU!

    and katherine…who?

  84. Dita says – reply to this

Grey's is back - hope they can keep the momentum going next season. One of the best episodes of the show and one of the best season finales ever. Amazing, stressful, suspenseful…loved it. Was on the edge of my seat, crawling out of my skin, crying - as if I were there with them! Had to watch The Office afterwards to get some funny in to come down from that, lol.

  85. 85

This episode was wayyyyyyy intense. No doubt it was the best tv I have ever watched.

  86. 86

That was one of the most real and scary episodes of tv I have watched in awhile. Being a nurse and having to call security for patients fighting is the worst. ESPECIALLY WHEN SECURITY CONSISTS OF 110 POUND WOMEN!! This show gave me a panic attack!

  87. 87

It was fucking fantastic. I LOVE Grey's So much!

  88. 88

it was epic … loved it …couldn't look away from the screen … can't wait for september to come!

  89. 89

This was just surreal…I still can't believe what happened there…I'll definetely be watching next season.

  90. bst62 says – reply to this

OMG what a great episode. Sarah Drew was amazing, too. When she started talking to the shooter I started crying and couldn't stop. You could feel the fear.

  91. 91

SERIOUSLY, IT WAS LIKE THE BEST GREY'S ANATOMY EVER!!!!!! I was on the edge of my freaking seat the whole show!!! Right from the get-go, the episode was action-packed and amazing. And yes, I definitely smell Emmy's with that episode for sure!! They deserve it!!!!

  92. 92

As good as that was, Breaking Bad will sweep the emmys next year.

  93. 93

AMAZING episode , AMAZING acting !!! I was screaming at the TV , shaking and crying !!! I agree 100% - Emmys all around !!!

  94. 94

  95. 95

  96. 96

Its the best fuckin' episode ever!!! I mean my gosh! I cried, I was scared like fuckin' hell, and I even needed to rest for a while. It was so fuckin' intense!!! Sure winner!!! Chandra Wilson and Sandra Oh should win the Emmy's or else its fuckin' whacked!!!

  97. 97

I thought last night's episode was amazing!!!! I really hope that Mark and Lexie get back together!!! =)

  98. K-LaV says – reply to this

One of the all time best Grey's episodes. This kind of writing is why I started watching Grey's back in Season one. Nice to see it return. Better late then never!

  99. 99

I think my heart raced for the entire 2 hours. There was no letting up. So many possibilities for next season. Gawd, I hope this is the intense type of writing/acting we can look forward to from now on from Greys. It's why we all initially started watching.
