Talks have begun between the British Government and Royal Palace aides to discuss a multi-million pound raise to Queen Elizabeth in the UK.
The Queen's current annual salary is 7.9 million pounds and is estimated to be overspent by 6 million pounds a year which has been covered by a 35 million pound emergency reserve. The reserve is expected to run out by 2012.
British taxpayers are likely going to be pissed about this since the coalition government just announced a 6 billion pound cut to revitalize the economy. A senior royal source says:
"By sheer chance, the timing is delicate and no one knew that it would be announced so soon after a change of government."
Maybe the Queen could take a cue from the rest of the country and just cut back on her spending a bit, no?! Hold off on the new tiara purchases or something!

She deserves it. Its not an easy life in many ways - money isn't everything. I remember feeling sorry for her during the world tour she undertook to celebrate 50 yrs on the throne (2003?). She looked so old and tired at times, but always a smile and friendly word. When she goes, there will never be another like her, that's for sure.

It's amazing just how ignorant people are. I get the impression that the majority of you think the Queen sits around all day doing nothing but indulging herself…you're completely wrong. She's deserving of the raise (afterall, she herself will get taxed like everyone else). She's 'on-call' if you like 365 days a year and not just for GB and Northern Ireland, but also the entire Commonwealth.
The monarchy is also a large land owning body which in itself provides the country with money and jobs. I also completely agree with the comments about the monarchy's impact on tourist in the UK and feel that the removal of it would be devastating. This would also have a significant impact on commonwealth countries as well. The removal of the royal family from any country would also be extremely costly. Look at the political system of Canada for example, a constitutional monarchy. I think what most people do not realise is that removing the Queen isn't as simple as printing new money by replacing the Queen's image with leaves, beavers and hockey or what have you, but also reorganising the political system so that royal asset is not needed to pass laws (look this up if you don't understand what this means).
I like the tradition of monarchy - without the UK monarchy, a significant percentage of the world (commonwealth) would not be where they are today. I will also state that I hate seeing hockey and leaves on my money - they mean nothing.

The Queen has been asking for a raise for a couple of years now because Buckingham Palace (which doesn't belong to her, but to the British people) is falling to pieces and hasn't been fixed up since the 1950's. And she also needs money to pay the staff who are responsible for running the palace and taking care of the grounds, as well as the people who work for her directly. For the last year or so the Queen has been paying the surplus out of her own pocket. If your President asked for money to fix up the White House and pay the staff, no one would complain. She is a diplomatic head of state and requires a great amount of money to host oversees visitors and other diplomats. On top of that she is expected to host many public events and she and her family are great custodians of our many castles and palaces, without the care from the royal family many would have fallen into dereliction decades ago like many of our other ancient homes.
She is an important part of our history and culture. Maybe her timing is a little poor tho! :/

The money she's asking for is used to upkeep royal properties, which generate a great deal of money for the UK - much more than she is asking for. I can't believe you think the UK's tourism will be affected after she dies. I live in Edinburgh and there are THOUSANDS of tourists here on any given day, and we have over half a million tourists in August. Millions is generated by Holyrood Palace every year. That won't change.
