Hairspray 2 Axed!

We're only mildly disappointed with this news and only because we'll miss Zacquisha!

Though John Waters had been commissioned and completed the script for a sequel to Hairspray, the movie has been canned by the studio.

Hairspray director Adam Shankman confirmed the news, telling the press: "I'm going to kill that rumor now - that got killed. I was so happy with the first one, let's leave well enough alone. It's all good."

No, it wasn't very good, the first one, we mean. That's probably why the second one will never come to be.

But we agree, let's leave well enough alone. No need for theaters to be plagued with yet ANOTHER unnecessary sequel!

Where's the re-make of 'Pink Flamingos' ?!? Couldn't Susan Boyle play the Egg Lady 'Edie' ?!?

    8. 8

Thank God! Now we dont have to see that cross-dressing douche bag John Travolta again!

    9. 9

…Zac's eyebrows look like they could slice cheese in that pic…must be the photoshop….and I actually like his acting btw, good actor….

    11. 11

Stop smoking crack, Perez. That movie was enjoyable and fun.

    12. 12

I thought the first movie was good but I see no reason to make another one though. Leave it be!

    13. 13

This movie was goodddd. I think the director has a good point. He just doesn't wanna over kill it. Tell me how many other movies got sequels that bombed…??? Matrix, shrek,MI, just to name a fewww. People, add more movie to the list that bombed in sequels.

    14. 14

Many movies got ruined by sequels. Like I said before, I would like eeveryone of you readers to compile a list of sequels

    15. 15

GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD! The first one was horrible!!!

    16. 16

    17. 17

OH WHY NOT THEY KEEP MAKING SHITTY SEQUELS LET THIS ONE COME OUT.

    18. 18

THANK GAWD! John Travolta in drag is nightmare making… and little too close to home…

    19. 19

I guess Travolta will have to wear his dress and wig in another movie. Although I enjoy some of his movies, He did not make a pretty woman.

    20. 20

hairspray was a GREAT movie, perez. you're just jealous because zac got to kiss nikki.

    21. 21

The Original John Waters production was the best.

    22. 22

ShoeWhore, You just made my night!

    23. 23

Re: ChiefJohn – Hail to the Chief !!!

    25. 25

By "the first one," do you mean the 1988 original or the 2007 remake? I haven't seen either, although a sequels to remakes sounds like a bad trend waiting to happen…

    26. 26

YES!!! Goody Goody Gum drops! It was dead when John Travolta said he wouldn't come back. The first one was good let it be! :)

    27. 27

The first movie was actually pretty good, and I can't STAND musicals. I totally forgot that they were looking into making a sequel, but yeah it's probably for the best. Where could they have gone with the sequel, anyway? Look how "Grease 2" did.

    28. 28

this musical remake was a damn travesty, Divine is rolling in her grave, and to make a sequal would only suck more!!!

    29. 29

The Hairspray movie was absolutely TERRIBLE. Such an insult to the musical. It sucks that the sequel got axed, but it's probably a good thing because it would have been even worse.

For once, someone in Hollywood shows common sense. 'Hairspray' was one of those films where story, acting, music and directing came together to produce a very satisfying result. Shankman knows that there's no guarantee that the same thing would happen in a second film; one big reason is that everyone would compare the second cast to the first, and the second one would always pale in comparison.
      .
Hairspray will go down as Poof Pony Efron's best effort - it was a small part, so he didn't have to carry the film's narrative (thank goodness, since he can't act). His very short height didn't work against him (it helped that Ms. Blonsky is diminutive, height-wise) and he was able to execute the simplistic dance steps and sing in an acceptable manner.
      .
Pooferella's look at that age was OK and appropriate for the part - and Shankman's team of art directors, costumers and stylists made sure that Poofie was always presented in the best possible light. Good luck to the people who will have the same jobs in Poof's next films. Between the fugly turn Poofie's looks have taken as he as gotten older, and the negative impact of the steroids and the meth, Poof's marginal looks are only going to get worse as time goes on (the curse of the pretty boy).
      .
So good for you, Adam Shankman - you left money on the table, and didn't let your good film get dragged down by a potentially dismal sequel.

      36

I actually really loved the first one. Mmmm James Marsden

    37. 37

The first one was awesome, saw it like 5 times in the theater! I'm fine with there not being a sequel though, let the first one stand on its own.

    38. 38

I hated the first one and they picked the wrong person to play Tracy Turnblad and I feel that ruined the movie

the original was too good with Rickie Lake

    39. 39

The first one was fairly awful. Don't need a 2nd one.

    40. 40

How is Nikki going to pay for her next meal?

    41. 41

The first one became one of the highest grossing musicals ever.

    42. 42

Huh? The first one was good. Just check Rotten Tomatoes, Metacritic, and the box office numbers.

    43. 43

I liked the original 1980s version starring Ricki Lake, Divine, and Debbie Harry. I didn't care too much for the newer version.

    44. 44

liked the first one but a sequel was a bad idea

    45. 45

      thank u God thank u thank u

    46. 46

I WAS ACTUALLY LOOKING FORWARD 2 IT :(

    47. 47

SO GOD DOES EXIST AFTER ALL. THANKS G, I DON'T NO IF I COULD HAVE LIVED THROUGH FOR PART 2…..

    48. 48

that movie was awesome! but i guess that a second one would be to far

    49. 49

Perez u know fuck all about TV, Film, Stage etc. The more i read your late and ill reported stuff on these subjects the more i think you should stick to stories about Lindsay Lohan (even though half of them are bullshit as well).
Hairspray got amazing reviews, critics and audiences loved it and it did great at the worldwide box office (over 200 million of a 45 million budget).
