Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!
What can be done to turn things around????
Why is this news now…?
Not surprised.
We keep getting one hit wonders, talent show winners and crappy artists shoved down our throats.
It's called Itunes.
I honestly think that there need to be more artists or bands that focus on the music and the whole package of the album, not just churning out singles. As someone who has learned a lot about the local music scene in the NYC/Jersey Shore/Philly area over the last few years I know that there is a lot of talent out there to be found. Albums and music used to tell stories, now most of them are just songs about going out. Bring in modern day Bruce Springsteen's, Allman Brothers, The Eagles…and then see what sales will do.
Here is a novel idea, produce music people would want to buy.
What can people do? Stop promoting illegal downloads. Shut down forms, and blogs who offer illegal music. The industry needs to really start promoting stuff again. The music industry in the UK and Asia and several other European countries have gone up in sales (not by a big percentage). But the industry needs to work with the people, stop half-assing releases, like CD singles without b-sides or the popular remixes etc. Promote music like they use too.
Perhaps come up with some quality NEW music. Quit signing people like Ke$ha who not only can't sing but isn't even a good performer. Another idea is to make a good ALBUM. Not just 1 good song and 9 crappy ones. If you really want people to buy the entire album make it where most of the songs are worth listneing to. I think the last Album I bought and listened to the WHOLE cd was Daughtry's debut album. Every single song was worth listening to. His 2nd album was good but a couple that were kinda blah.
Re: judalon – I completely agree.
GEE ! the industry is hurting ? wow .. how to fix the problem ? hmmm ?.. HERES ONE FOR YOU PEREZ stop smack talking crap about 1 of the very few GREAT AND TALLENTED ARTIST THE WE ACTUALLY HAVE .. DUH ! yes i adore lady gaga too just like you, BUT UNLIKE YOU , i love christina aguilera as well WHO EVER SAID THAT WE HAD TO CHOSE ONE OR THE OTHER ! you maybe but my ipod holds 130 gb I HAVE ROOM FOR ALL ARTIST i dont have to pick and choose .. stop TALKING smack about artist so much YOU are HURTING the industry ! and others like you. We dont have to chose 1 artist over another both GAGA and XTINA are great for what they have to offer THEY ARE DIFFERENT, COMPLETLY apples / oranges . both i love BOTH now KEI$HA smack talk her ALL YOU WANT eat your heart out & go to town on that one. and all the other GENERIC CRAP that are POLLUTING airwaves today. then the sales will pick up. People have become DISENCHANTED by the industry too much FODDER
Maybe the music industry sales could get better if you didnt continue to bash every artist that comes out or recommending more illegal downloads (eminem).
i agree with rainbow, the people that succeed in the music industry make music that people relate to. GaGa's fans relate to her, and pay to see her, or like me truely enjoy her music so pay to have the cd with all the pics and info in the sleeve. the talent is out there. People need to find it and stop waiting for it to be shoved down there throat by the radio or media
reduce the prices of the CD package, include exclusive songs on the CD, include a wall poster which will spur on the younger generation to buy the CD and generally create album booklets which offer an incite into the artist and their music and vision.
Maybe if you would stop promoting CRAP artists the good ones will rise up!
Re: OverPerezHilton – EXACTLY. Perez just said to illegally download his album.
Sales will go up on the 22nd
Two thoughts……produce better music and pose that question to President Obama.
I think part of the problem is the lack of good music out there. If more people with talent signed on and made a lot better songs than mainstream is releasing now (for the most part), the industry would not be hurting as badly.
When napster started, music went from costing $12 for a CD, to being free. Mp3's have pretty much been free ever since, and all the people that worked to promote and distribute money had to get other jobs. A lot of artists too.
BIONIC will get things going.. LEGENDTINA
Dude, celebrities make so much damn money when there are people in this country struggling just to get food. I'm glad this is happening. They don't need to hoard any more money.
It all sounds the freakin same now!!!!
Stop shoving miley, jonas brothers and that shizz down our throat and sign some real artists.
Not this manufactured bull
The record industry, instead of trying to cash in on the downloading frenzy started by Napster and other sites in the late 90s, tried to close down all those sites and went after the average Joe making less than $30K a year by suing the hell out of them; pissed a lot of consumers off. Not only that, the current generation of 16-28 year olds–a lot of them don't remember what it's like to browse in a music store for hours, trying to find good music. Now everything is readily available online, legally & illegally, people can download partial albums or just the songs they like, or they can stream or download the album from almost anywhere, and if they can, they're going to get it for free. Go into a CD store now, if you can find one, and their inventory has shrunk from 50-80%. Want to want to walk in a store and find an older obscure CD from someone's back catalog? Good luck! Most stores are just stocking the latest releases.
Plus, people today actually believe that they're entitled to free music. Record companies haven't done a whole lot of making CD more affordable. And well, frankly, the current state of the music scene, for the most part, sucks.
CDs are obsolete, an industry update is needed.
take the music away from the record exe's…artist now adays don't need them…between itunes and their own websites…why do we need a bunch of middle men
who buys cd's anymore???
Re: duelastar – haha you are so right. not much talent out there anymore.
have lady gaga release another album
Re: RhiRun – thats what i've always thought!
Um… Get off the old business model and maybe embrace the digital age. And then, maybe if they are lucky and haven't alienated most of their clients they might start to make money again.
bring back PRINCE .. oh yes BRING BACK PAYOLLA lol.. the idustry used to pay millions to promote thier really good artist .. instead of the mainstream generic crap.. remember thats how MOTOWN started .back then all we had was commercial singers stealing the r&b artist music they heard on low budget stations then re-recording it w/ geniric artist then it was a big hit ..BUT HEN CAME PAYOLLA .. w/out the SOUL/R&B industry using payolla to promote the TRUE ARTIST we would never have heard of artist like .. JAMES BROWN , AREATHA, MARVIN GAYE, TINA TURNER, ETTA JAMES , MICHAEL JACKSON and even PRINCE ..the list goes on till you get to the young artist who were influenced by the above mention artist .. like CHRISTINA AGUILERA and LEONA LEWIS, and even GAGA now the industry instead of TRULLY promoting the TALLENTED artist hoping they'll get by on tallent alone .. promote the hell outta thier generic performers …ie .. KEI$HA .. blah blah blah .. who is a BOBBLE HEAD .. LOL
this is happening for a few reasons
1. music today super sucks!!!
2. anyone can get a song for free (or real cheap) on the internet.
3. MUSIC TODAY SUPER SUCKS!!!!!!
Re: truth in life – LOL.. YES YOUR RIGHT .. PRINCE HAS ALREADY DONE THAT … but he is hurting bad , though i hear .. and he is ONE OF THE GREATS .. and try hard to held other struggling legendary artist , like those who inspired him. HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRINCE .. WHO TURNED 52 yesterday .. i love you
lower the prices!
Some of these comments are saying well celebrities already make enough money, but that's not the point. Record producers and song writers make money off the cd's sold too, and they aren't making much these days.
I live in Singapore, where you can't purchase any music online. But that doesn't encourage me to buy CDs, in fact, the complete opposite…
Ha……well perez, what a surprise, u mean travis gayland isnt gona save the music biz? You gave him about 50000 plugs and he is not even in the top 200 of itunes! You say OUCH OUCH OUCH, how about considering that music is MUCH more than what people like you say it is, its about feeling something and these days the only music you promote in a positive way you get PAID to promote! I wonder what music you have actually BOUGHT this year? Your 15min is UP!
…. figure it's cause all the new music sucks…
I went to see the Eagles in concert and they put on an amazing show. Everyone who was there knew their music by heart and sang along. I lost track of how many songs they sang, but it was awesome how much GREAT music they had produced. I've seen them 3 times in concert and they are just amazing. Bands can't seem to do that anymore. Most of the music out now is crap. My generation knows thousands of songs from the era where good music was everywhere. You just absorbed it. That's just not the case now. People have to demand good music, not this garbage that's out there. It amazes me who can now be popular with little or no talent.
How bout finding real talent and not shit like Miley Cyrus and Ke$ha?
Bring back rock&roll..Bob Seger…classic!!! DJ's are forced to play crap on the radio…there's no choice but to download what you like and listen that way. I wouldn't waste my hard earned $$$ on Kei$ha or Kanye!!!
Give people more than just a hard copy of the music. Entice them to buy an album, give them more than just the standard artwork and songs that they could download on Itunes. Put songs that aren't on Itunes! Maybe live versoins. Include extras in the packaging, like Lady Gaga did with her Monster Ball box set. Stay away from standard jewel cases. If you put out the bare minimum for a CD most are probably going to pick the cheaper and more convenient download on iTunes. I think people would be more enthusiastic to pay a bit more for a CD if it had more substance to it. The same way how some would rather by albums on vinyl. You gotta give them a reason to fork over the extra money.
Drop the prices!!!
Give us better choices!!!
let's see.. how about not selling CDs at $20 a pop and stop publishing bad music! I will buy a CD if it's worth it, but not if they are a one or two hit wonder.
COZ THE PPL ARE SICK OF FAKEYS LIKE KATY PERRY GAGA AND ETC WE LOVE REAL ARTISTS LIKE NORAH JONES
Make every CD $5.
Well maybe your Gagaloo can blow everyone to get them to buy a cd. Seriously. She says she don't do stuff like roll around in sand for sex thoughts for men but she acts and dresses like a slut in her videos.
you promoting the hell out of your SHIT artists doesn't help music any
HEY PEREZ HOW ABOUT STOP TALKING SHIT ON EVERYONE BUT GAGA AND MAYBE PEOPLE WILL BUY ALBUMS MORE. YOUR PATHETIC ASS IS TO BLAME FOR AT LEAST 5% OF IT…. NOT THAT YOU REALLY MATTER BUT HOW ABOUT YOU TAKE GAGAS DICK OUT OF YOUR MOUTH FOR 5 SECONDS AND GIVE OTHER PEOPLE A CHANCE!!!!!!!!! YOU MUST HAVE BEEN MADE FUN OF A LOT AS A KID……..
Bring back the singer who sold the most CDs in the world last year. SUSAN BOYLE Must be some reason for that accomplishment. Yep, the lady can SING!!!
I'm not a recording artist so I don't care. Explain to me why I should care.
There's one simple solution. Bring back music videos to MTV 24/7 with VJs — just like they used to do. Get rid of all the reality crap they produce or move it to a different network.
BRING IN REAL SINGERS AND GET RID OF ALL THE MANUFACTURED ARTIST >>>>>>
RELEASE LIL WAYNE!!! HE WILL PICK THAT SHIT UP QUICK!!! EVERONE IS GONNA BUY HIS NEW CD WHEN HE GETS RELEASED> NOT THE SHIT HE MEDE PRIOR TO JAIL TIME BUT AFTER>THAT IS GONNA BE GOLD>
What can be done? People need to quit jacking free music online. It has hurt the industry severly.
What can be done to turn things around????
Simple: good Music! Honestly I don't like anything new! very few songs are actually good….a lot (or alomost everything) right now are good "club songs" but that's it. An club songs are just that, is not what people really buy. Also, Music execs or whoever need to find a way to promote albums not just singles (cuz before if you liked a single you had to but the album, now you can just download the song you like)

that's b/c everyone has ipods and mp3 players.
i do but i never use it.
i prefer cds
I can't remember the last time I actually BOUGHT a CD. I believe it was about five years ago. First off, most artists don't have more than one, or two songs WORTH listening to. Why spend $20 on TWO songs? Second, I don't ever use CD's.. I either listen to music on my iTunes, my iPod, or my car (even then, I have an iPod hookup). It's just not worth it.. Eventually that CD is either going to get lost, or I'm going to accidentally step on it.
Quit promoting inexperienced and label extruded pop acts, and scour the landscape for some real musicians who can write an original tune or CD that people might actually want to buy or download? No force fed pablum for me.
Lower the price of cd's to under $5 each. The music industry has been raping the public for years. Now the ball is in our court.
BTW cd's cost about a quarter to manufacture the actual disc. The price for each disc is way down. But the price of cd's has not dropped. $5 is more than a fair price, and $3 is not that out of line. Ask any indie musician that has his own cd's made.
Rock is over, Post-bands music is here. The new music is honest, with a lot of emphasis on quality of the music, not diva-ness. And it is just more fun. Get rid of music from suits and hear the first new type of music in this century.
The single is back!
No one has a reason to gripe when there's a new music that is opposing rock, called Post-Bands music; that is all about quality, innovation, and honest music. There's great music out there. The media just refuses to talk about it. When the media is fair you'll hear the greatest music made in decades.
Get rid of people like Gaga, xtina, Bieber, Kanye, etc… and bring back REAL music.
