This is so sad!

16-year-old Abby Sunderland is lost at sea somewhere in the Indian Ocean during her attempt to become the youngest sailor to circumnavigate the globe!

She was reported missing today after her family lost contact with her. Abby manually set off two emergency beacons around 9 a.m. according to her mother and then her parents lost satellite phone contact with her.

"Everything seemed to be under control," said her father Laurence Sunderland. "But then our call dropped and a hour later the Coast Guard called."

How awful!

We hope she's found soon — and safely!

Stupid stupid kid, It thins the heard

  2. 2

Hope everything turns out all right. It's quite a feat she is attempting.

  3. 3

    probably pirates!

  4. 4

And her fuckin parents are locked up. For god sakes, 16 and sailing around the world. Nothing complacent about that now is there. Retards!

  5. 5

    oh no save Abby!

  6. 6

why does this belong in a gossip blog?

  7. 7

that is why it is not a good idea for a 16 year old to go solo sailing around the world! i hope she is oK!

  8. 8

She probably went into the Bermuda Triangle, never to return.

  9. 9

wow, scary!! good wishes to her and her family!!!

  10. 10

Note to her parents: You're both fucking retarded.

  11. 11

I truly hope she is ok. HOWEVER, WHAT THE HELL WERE HER PARENTS THINKING LETTING A 16-YEAR OLD GIRL GO ALONE AROUND THE WORLD LIKE THAT IN A FREAKIN BOAT??????? The parents should be thrown in jail for child endangerment if not for pure stupidity!

  12. 12

I hope she is okay but really they should have thought about this more.

  13. 13

I'm sorry…who lets a 16-year old girl sail solo around the world. Having said that I hope this young girl is found safe and sound.

  14. 14

I hope she's okay…..but yikes! Dangerous to do this alone.

  15. 15

not sure why her parents would ever let her do this. I thought part of the job was to keep children from making foolish choices.

  16. 16

I hope she's okay but let's be honest here… this is a rich white person's problem. Whatever happened to HS kids just being kids. Taking a kid out of HS just to sail round the world solo is just plain dumb. Normal people don't have these problems. Her parents SHOULD foot the bill for the cost of her search and recovery. Again, rich white people problems.

  17. 17

yup have to agree: stupid kid…sorry… but its true

  18. 18

The 'Roarie 40s' where she is lost is terribly wild area of ocean. Her parents are idiots to allow her to risk her life like this.

That's some nice geography on you there, god bless the american education system

  21. 21

lmao what a dumb ass. Why are her parents sitting on their asses at home?

  22. 22

so i get it if ur daughter is a master sailer and she is a pro and all BUT this is 2010 and we have pirates out there and the could have easily attacked her for WHATEVER THEY NEEDED and left her to die. with this as a possibility, why would she go this alone? why did her father or mother or some other adult go with her, if for nothing than safety. im appauled that someone would endager their daughter's life this way. like it was commented earlier, this rich white ppl problems. i bet SHE owns the boat. these rich ppl assume they are above everyone and no one will kidnap their daughter at sea, they couldnt image something like that b/c the've probably never endured struggle and they are out of touch with reality. reality is, she's probably not ok.

  23. 23

Well what in the world is wrong with parents. She was too young to try such a thing.

  24. 24

What kind of a fucking parent allows their 16 year old child to sail around the world alone? What did they think would fucking happen. Stupid, rich, assholes.

  25. 25

    today is a slow day.
    * I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste I have to copy & paste

  26. 26

Young people like this have done this through the years. American Tania Abei, Australian Jessica Watson is just returning home now I think. As a sailor myself it's not as nuts as you think. Her boat will be very well outfitted for her safety. Hopefully she is just off the radar for the moment and is okay. Letting her sail isn't the problem, all the homicidal maniacs out there is.

  27. 27

I wouldn't let my son sail alone that far at 16 years old. Idiot parents.

  28. 28

Dumb asses! Seriously, why would they let her do this alone? I hope they find her safe… that must be so scary for her.

  29. 29

uh and this all could've been prevented if… her parents weren't retarded and she wasn't a naiive 16 year old girl. who the fuck tries to sail around the world, you're asking for trouble duh.

  30. 30

The stunts some people pull to get into the Ivy League! Damn, I know college admissions is a competitive business, but kids, this is not the way to distinguish yourself. I hope the girl is ok, but her parents belong in jail.

  31. 31

Poor girl! I hope she's okay. I'm praying for her and her family.

  32. 32

Is that the same girl from 20/20? I think I saw her story. It was on parents who let their kids live out their dreams, sometimes alone, no matter how dangerous. Like the 13 year old boy who climbed Mount Everest with his dad and the 9 or 11 year old Matador. She tried to do it once none stop, but stopped briefly because of a storm. She returned home safely after her trip and was considered a hero. I hope they find her. She's a pretty good sailor who's taken solo overnight trips before (if its the same girl). But I would have sent her with a guide for that much longer trip if I were her parent.

  33. 33

    wow.
    hope she's okay.
but WHY in the world would so go out by HERSELF?!?

  34. 34

You can go missing outside of a boat also, someone could kid nap you, you can get raped, beaten and left for dead as easily on the streets, or in the comfort of your own home as much as being on a boat.

At least she's doing something ambitious, unlike most teenagers today who would rather slut it up, who is more of a role model - this 16 year old girl, or slutted up Miley Cyrus????

I hope the girl is found and her parents are put at ease!

  35. 35

the parents should be jailed for basically sending their child to her death! idiots!

  36. 36

Her parents are idiots. You don't go sending a teenager out into the ocean. Have you ever seen how huge the waves get etc…? This was a stupid idea and a stupid record attempt. I hope it was worth it to her parents…

  37. 37

Make sure you followup on this. We want to know what happens!

  38. 38

We hope she's found safe, not safely. To find someone safely means you are being safe whilst looking for her (which is still a good idea).

  39. 39

Nothing to say that someone hasn't already said, still felt compelled to comment. As a parent I know I would have a hard enough time coping with my child's decision to attempt to do this as a legal adult. This is terrible and did not have to happen. Hope she's found.

  40. 40

I thought she just got back. Is this a different girl than the one from Australia?

  41. 41

Its funny how Perez didn't mention the fact that her parents should be the blame for letting a minor sail around the world BY HER SELF come on PIRATES HELLO!!!

  42. 42

I PRAY she's ok so not cool for her parents to allow her to do so

  43. 43

uhm yeah… what parent would let a 16 year old get pregnant??? what parent would let their 16 year old drop out of school??? What parent would let a 16 year old date a guy that is older than them??? What parent would buy cigarettes for their 16 year old??? What parent would buy alcohol for their 16 year old???

My point…. sailing around the world is unsafe but this is one thing I'd let my daughter/son do (grated I knew their sailing skills)!!!

  44. 44

    best news today

  45. 45

i know her im from canada we went to the same elementry she was soooo passionate about the sea she loved it was litteraly her dream believe me shes not lost she will make it she always knows how to get around thing

  46. 46

Re: Sistersandme – How can she be in the Bermuda Triangle when clearly she is in the Indian Ocean not in the Caribbean! Get a clue!

  47. 47

Moron parents. No matter how talented, skilled or interested this girl was in sailing around the world on her own, she's still a CHILD with the brain and life experience of a child. Just because you *can* do something, it doesn't mean you *should* do it. Too bad her parents are apparently too dumb to know the difference.

  48. 48

I SMELL A PUBLICITY STUNT, KINDA LIKE BALLOON BOY.

  49. 49

but if not, then i really do hope she is found because i would be going nuts if i was lost out at sea

  50. 50

Well…. here`s hoping she`ll get along well with Ginger and Mary Ann… or Wilson for that matter…

  51. 51

Here idiot parents should be imprisoned for child endangerment! Typical libitards!

  52. 52

Re: Em!ly *R* – Didn't see your comment at first-yep, you nailed it. I have kids too and agree-there was no reason for this to happen. Her parents basically put her directly in harm's way. There are plenty of other ways they could have supported and encouraged her passion. Solo, around the world in choppy seas should be a non-option.

  53. 53

Edgenet, I hope you fall in a deep hole.
This is so sad.. I really hope she is found safe and ok! This is very awful..

  54. 54

    STOP COUNTING THESE STUPID RECORDS

  55. 55

This reminds me of the 9 year old who died in a plane crash because her parents let her fly. Stupid

  56. 56

It's the parents who are stupid and irresponsible letting a young girl like that go on such a foolhardy trip. You've got to be kidding. They need to be arrested and put away for a long time.

  57. 57

She is in the middle of nowhere in terrible sea conditions. No where near pirates. Her emergency distress beacons were activated. She left too late and should never have been in the Indian Ocean this time of year, it is winter there and very rough. The yachting community was outraged of her schedule and route. This was to beat a record and was reckless.

  58. 58

damn…I can't even go to the mall without my parents monitoring my every move.

  59. 59

to be rich and serve no purpose in life …. this is what happens!

  60. 60

If this would of been a boy..He wouldn't of had any problems..Cause hes a MAN not a girl

  61. 61

I hope she is alright, but her parents deserve a swift kick in the head.

  62. 62

While I hope she's ok off course, the whole thing is ludicrous. 16 yr olds don't have sense enough to tie their shoelaces let alone sail around the world alone. I don't care how mature she may appear, her parents should be paying for the search and rescue for their own stupidity.

  63. 63

Wow Im glad my folks had the trust in me to go live my dreams as a 16-17 year old, otherwise I wouldnt be who I am today. We need to stop wrapping our kids up in cotton wool, shes 16 for christs sake, not a bloody toddler! I hope she's found safe and well.

  64. 64

Re: windbourne – your an idiot!!

  65. 65

Was she–is she by herself? What in God's name were the parents thinking?

  66. J.Mo says – reply to this

    66

Re: Larizza – but who is paying for the search and hopefully a rescue?

  67. 67

Uhm, her older BROTHER did the trip when he was SEVENTEEN and no one had any problems with that.

People need to stop babying their kids, shit happens so you should LIVE while you're HERE.

I hope they find her safe, but if not this is what the girl wanted to do. 16 year olds have different levels of maturity, and this girl was not your average high school age IDIOT. She's doing what she LOVES.

  68. 68

I hope she's fine, but letting her do it was dumb to say the least.

  69. 69

Both her and her parents were warned about the winter storms that take place in the indian ocean and that is where she got lost. yes this is sad but what type of parents let their 16 year old circumnavigate the globe by them self! RETARDS!

  70. 70

    Hopefully she is okay. :)

  71. 71

Didn't see an updated post, but on other news sites it says they have located her and she's ok (and with the boat). So that's good news! They are reportedly working to get someone out to her location, which could take some time. As far as planning, parenting, etc. I will leave that to the rest of you to decide for yourselves

  72. 72

she was found alive and well 6 hours ago… Perez needs to learn how to update his postings.

  73. 73

She was found! Thank God! I'm sure"Perez" won't post this news, because they probably really don't care. Let's see if they do and how long it takes them to.

  74. 74

    1. her parents are fucking idiots for letting her try to do this.
    2. shes fucking stupid for thinking she could do it
    3. 16 year olds are prone to fail.
    4. shes a rich little shit and her parents should pay for all this shit, she was born with a silver spoon up her ass.
and if shes found alive everyone will shower her in gifts.
and even if shes found dead the family will get showerd in gifts.

yuppy rich people are fucking stupid, with ur sail boats n shit, go fuck off and die choking on ur fish eggs n shit, grosssssss.

  75. 75

Seriously… who lets a 16 year old sail around the world ALONE?
Something is very wrong with this picture.

I hope they find her soon, alive and well.

  76. 76

Sucks that she got lost, but I'd like to point out an Australian girl has been there, done that. So maybe Americans should pay some attention to other countries before doing idiotic things that have been done before, (and not even managing to do them properly!), yeah?

  77. 77

Found!!!! I am so happy to hear the news this morning!

  78. 78

what a dumbass. i'm glad they found her but come on… she is a complete moron.
