"Winslow Therapeutic Center is a non-profit organization accredited by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. Therapeutic horseback riding produces smiles, laughter, friendship, and healing. We see children and adults every day who improve their physical, cognitive, social, and emotional well being by learning to ride in our therapeutic environment. Our well trained and caring staff and volunteers have made it possible for us to offer a unique and often life-changing horseback riding experience to children and adults in our community since 1974."

I can say from experience this is a good program! My child had Therapeutic horseback riding for 3 summers…

Also, I notice this program is on the East Coast. There is another in Woodinville, WA (about thirty minutes from Seattle) where we service over 250 per week. Check out our site at littlebit.org. Or contact me at susan@littlebit.org if you'd like to get involved.

      Flora_tink:
It's so much more than that for the kids who go. I myself have been riding for 15 years and have done volunteer work for Theraputic Riding progams. Yes, it is VERY emotionally theraputic for them but physically as well. The horses give the kids (and adults, for that matter) a chance to move, use their muscles, and feel like they are in control of some aspect of their lives.

I've heard good things about this type of therapy.

Riding a horse is not like sitting on a chair. You have to use your muscles to grip the saddle and keep your balance, even if you're just at a walk.

Physically, this form of therapy helps to strengthen the spine, pelvic, and leg muscles. It also helps develop coordination and balance. The movement of the horse is great for increasing the range of motion in joints. Mentally, it allows children to develop patience, set goals, and gain self-confidence.

I rode horses as a kid to help treat a joint disorder and spastic muscles. I used to have a fairly pronounced limp, and my legs dislocated at the hip pretty easily. After a about a year of riding on a weekly basis, my limp was virtually gone. The muscles I developed help keep my legs from dislocating. It still happens, but nearly as often as it used to.
