While coming home from a concert on the eve of the World Cup in Soweto, Nelson Mandela's 13-year-old great-granddaughter Zenani was killed in a car accident.

South African President, Jacob Zuma, said:

"The nation shares your loss and mourns with you, especially on the day on which our dreams and hopes come alive in the opening of the first FIFA World Cup on African soil."

Mandela was expected to make an appearance at the opening ceremony on Friday, but due to circumstances, he will be staying at home with his family.

His foundation stated, "We are sure that South Africans and people all over the world will stand in solidarity with Mr. Mandela and his family in the aftermath of this tragedy." Mandela "will be there with you in spirit today."

Sad.

SA may not be the safest place but it's one of the most beautiful countries in the world…I'm soooo proud to be South African…the country is changing, u blame the white folks for what has happened…they always try and claim what is not theirs…

Re: AvaLovesAbs – Yes…that's true. What is also true is that most children are "sold" not for cheap labour, but to satisfy the perverse sexual appetites of men. Yes. MEN. So in the same vein that you are bashing South Africa, should I continue by stereotyping ALL men, claiming them to be violent (check the "gender" on the majority of arrest records), criminal (check the jails) pedophiles? (check the sex offender list).

Re: AvaLovesAbs – Check your facts. South Africa is not one of the "worst human trafficking places in the world" and the security is not "pitiful".

Re: hajj_3 – It was a car accident, not motorbike. She was with her great-grandmother, Winnie Mandela.

I was so happy this morning because of the World Cup, but this news really made sad. And it wasn't a random concert, it was the world cup opening concert she was returning from, I don't know why, but I think that this makes it even sadder.

  23. 23

Aww that is horrible. I wish her family all the best.
