Missing Sailor Girl's Family Wants To Be Reality TV Stars!

Sounds shady!

Laurence Sunderland, the father of Abby Sunderland who was found at sea after being reported lost during her solo trip around the world, reportedly signed a deal for a reality show called Adventures In Sunderland.

Laurence is a sailing instructor living in Thousand Oaks, CA with his pregnant wife and their SEVEN children. A camera crew began filming four months ago. He says of the show:

"The show might be about family, it might be about Abigail's trip. It's something that was shopped around. We thought it might be a good idea if it was encouraging to kids to get out there and do things."

He insists that Abby's trip was not a stunt for the show and that "the wheels in motion for this trip had actually started when Abigail was 13 years old."

Neighbors say the family is pretty peculiar as they "rarely leave their house, and they rarely talk to neighbors." All 7 children are home-schooled as well.

Sounds fishy to us, but we hope they wouldn't jeopardize their daughter's life for the sake of making a few bucks!

Peculiar might be putting it lightly!

somebody please put an end to this madness! people are sick nowadays so i wouldnt put it past them but if their was good intentions from the get go then they should be counting their blessings that their daughter was found instead of exploiting her. no one wants to see that sh*t on TV anyway.

  3. 3

Do you ever research shit? Her brother had a world record when he was 16 for sailing around the world. They didnt send her out to make money, you dumbfuck.

  4. 4

i must say…i read the blog that was written whilst she was missing….i thought that the descriptions and writing seemed far too calm and composed as opposed to someone whose daughter was probably gone forever (or so we believed)…he was so non emotionally descriptive and now seemingly suspicious …ick

this looks like another case where a large home schooling family is looking to be supported by their kids, like the duggars and mayabe kate and her brood. there should be a law that doesn't allow the parents from using ANY of the funds derived form tv shows and all the monies should be kept in trust until the children reach 18 or 21.

  6. 6

at least they didn't get the fbi involved. lookin at you balloon boy

  7. 7

thisis fucking PATHETIC!! another bunch of freaks like jimboband whats her face the bitch who had 18 kids, those people are fucked up admn theres probably some stupid jesus theme going along here too.

this girls gotten enough attention, pudgy ugly lil blonde shelterd prep, none of theese people have personality… this is so awful

only rich yuppy assholes wud watch this

  8. 8

They should start a reality show called, "How to loose a girl in ten days"

  9. Ang M says – reply to this

    9

OOOOH I want to be rich and famous too. HMMMM let's see. Pretending your child is up in a homemade balloon and reporting your child lost at sea has been done before so I'll have to think of something else clever and dangerous for my child to do to get us on the news. *SHEESH*

  10. 10

Balloon Boy's parents take it up a notch -

  11. 11

wow……. u know they must manipulation their kids.. fucked up americans
america's reality tv shows has gone too far

    too fucked up

  12. 12

this reminds me of the balloon boy thing, hopefully its not

  13. 13

Last year their teenage son went around the world on a boat. Now their 16 year old daughter attempts the same feat. They're lucky their children didn't meet with watery graves. Very lucky. This family gives me the creeps.

  14. 14

the weather report says there were no storms…and so there for her mast was made come off easily ….all PR people

  15. 15

    Wouldn't surprise me.

  16. 16

These motherfucking fucking assholes! You've got to be fucking kidding me. They did it to get a fucking show, balloon boy style? The only thing that we should give them is directions to a jail cell. I did not know the father was a breeder. I knew about Abby's older brother and how his parents risked his life in their quest to become famous. And now they used their 16 year old daughter. Jesus. It's fucking awful. At least Balloon boy's mom and dad knew that kid was in the rafters in their garage. The Sunderlands offer their children to the gods of fame and fortune.

  17. 17

    Homeschooled? What a shocker.

  18. 18

Re: snow_queen – LOL. I dislike this family already

  19. 19

Re: Saosin – Ok I am not to familiar with the background of this family but I have to ask, she is 16 years old right and from what I heard she wanted to be the youngest person to sail around the world BUT if her brother already sailed at 16 than what was the point of breaking a record. I don't know I am confused….. :-/

  20. 20

everybody wants to have their 15 mins of fame, i see.

and who cares if they have seven children?
at least it's not like EIGHTEEN!!!

so what channel are they gonna be on? E! ?

  21. 21

Is there really a need for yet another show about people with a bunch of kids? Zzzzzzzzzz.

  22. 22

Um…now wait a minute. This morning I heard she was going on a trip again. (I had a feeling she would try to finish her trip where she left off)What I DIDN'T hear was that she got this TV deal…um…huh? O_O

  23. Kakia says – reply to this

    23

I don't care about the show. Whatever's clever. What I have a problem with is that these people think its appropriate to allow 16 year olds sail around the ENTIRE WORLD sans supervision! When I was 16 I wasn't allowed to go out of the house after 10 o'clock on a weeknight! Why is this legal? Where are the child endagerment charges? Child services needs to step in before the next child turns 16 and is lost at sea! They got VERY VERY lucky that Abby was found alive.

  24. 24

you guys who think this is a PR stunt obviulsy dont read the news ever being that her brother who was 17 NOT 16 (so it would still make her the youngest) already sailed around the world last year and has been on espn, the news, sports illustrated etc. how can it be a publicity stunt when the family already has publicity from their sons very successful i might add, adventure. Also if it was a publicity stunt wouldnt they have done that to their sons boat and not waited for their daughter to decide if she wants to sail?

keep up on current events then you would actually know things about this

  25. 25

Re: muggylborn – Oh man! I hope it wasn't the Balloon Boy thing all over again! >_O

  26. Cass says – reply to this

    26

Fucking fundie freaks. How Christian is it to abdicate all parental responsibly and risk your child's life for fame and fortune?

  27. 27

also for people who think 16 is to young to sail around the world…they are not doing it by themselves….their son had friends and family waiting for him at every port he stopped at which you would have known had you paid attention to his journey a year ago

  28. 28

    balloon boy part 2

  29. 29

i think that it is horrible that Americans let their child go sailing around the world without anyone there with her! i dont get why people arent making a bigger deal out of this.

  30. 30

This reminds me of that Balloon Boy thing.

  31. 31

Are they neighbors with the 'Balloon Boy'??

  32. 32

PATHETIC ! Even the NYC news was disgusted about this on the AM news.

  33. 33

Then the Sunderland family should have no problem reimbursing the Australian government the $300,000 it took to rescue Abby. Abby's mother stated, "we are not wealthy people" and told the Aussie press that they couldn't possibly pay the rescue fee. Another bunch of fame-whoring liars!

  34. 34

Re: PreTTy*n*PinK – her brother did it at 18

  35. 35

Re: SoManyFreaksSoFewCircuses – the french fishermen that rescued her risked THEIR lives to rescue her. It is WINTER IN THE INDIAN OCEAN. She has had not much training, only a few years. Her moronic mother said on tv yesterday, 'I don't want people saying she did not make it because she was a girl, I want people to say it was because she did not have the experience.' DUH. People with DECADES of experience would not attempt that. Who would LET THEIR CHILD DO THIS???? The father is in alot of debt. THIS IS A FAMILY TRYING TO MAKE MONEY OFF THEIR KIDS. THEY GIVE CHRISTIANS A BAD NAME, HOMESCHOOLING A BAD NAME. and please, who are the nuts giving them a show? E!?

  36. 36

I hope one of the episodes involves CPS questioning these terrible parents for letting their child get lost at sea! wtf?

  37. 37

    Re: snow_queen – LOVE IT!!!

  38. 38

    Disgusting

  39. Xenu says – reply to this

    39

This is Balloon Boy the Female Ocean Version. This girl did not have the experience and training but went on this stupid ass adventure anyways because she was taught that all you need is faith and JESUS and he will take care of you.

"rarely leave their house, and they rarely talk to neighbors." All 7 children are home-schooled as well."

This sounds like your typical insulated cultish Jesusy family. Once those kids leave and enter the real world they drift away from Christ after the see how the rest of the world is and come to the realization that what they were taught to believe in is total BULLSHIT.

  40. 40

In this case, as all cases where people put themselves or their children in likely jeopardy and later need massive efforts to get help, I hope they are being assessed a charge for whatever it cost to locate this girl. So let them have a show and make them pay half of what they get to whatever agencies risked lives and spent money to find her..

    Spare us anymore reality crap.

  43. 43

Not surprising at all. The abby16.com website is nothing more than an online store. They've been gearing up to this for a while now. I'm beginning to think these folk are no better than Kate Gosslin.

  44. 44

balloon boy meets jon & kate plus 8

  45. 45

jon & kate plus balloon boy 8

  46. 46

    A K A "BALLOON GIRL"

  47. 47

    what the fuck….no.

  48. 48

Is balloon boy her co-star? What a surprise! Pulling a ridiculous stunt for attention and they want a reality TV show. Shocking!
The fame whore values of this country are getting really, really shameful.

  49. 49

The parents should be locked up for child endangerment. They lucky that she was found but she could have easily NOT been found. Its stupid that they risked their child's life for a reality TV show. And they had been prepping her since she was 13 to attempt this? Sick…Ballon Boy part 2.

  50. 50

The facts are that they did get a Reality show but it started last year and they began filming before Abby left. The production team pulled out because the father was very difficult to deal with. However, when they saw what was going on with Abby, missing her weather window and then going at the height of winger and the troubles with the boat and her training, they felt is was too risky for them to be involved. If something happened to Abby they would feel responsible so they stopped filming a few months ago. They thought she was going to be killed. Now the father is saying he ended the deal because he thought they wanted Abby to die. I am thinking the truth is in the tapes. I am wondering what they will do with the footage that was shot. The producer, Susan Hartman of 23 South said that she owns the footage. I bet we see it but not in the format the Sunderlands intended.

  51. 51

I said it before and I'll say it again I REALLY DISLIKE THIS FAMILY. Famewhores

If people would stop watching reality TV these things wouldn't happen in the first place.

  55. 55

Re: justtfax – Ok thanks… but like I said on my comment I don't know the background of this family, I was replying to post #4 because he/she said that the brother was 16.

  56. 56

From Balloon Boy to Boat Girl. . . .

  57. 57

Perhaps they should use some of the "reality show" money to pay for the dumb asses rescue that Australia has had to foot the bill for. Stupidity

  58. 58

I said this last week already. I said remember the baloon boy incident. Sure enough I think I may have been right. Now why should the ppl be responsible to fork out the money for her search and rescue. They should pay for it.

  59. 59

it wasnt for the show, do some research- she was trying to break a record held by her brother for youngest person to sail around the world. they are avid sailors- the show would just document that. i love you perez but do some research, now you have all these people blasting this family because they're misinformed- they were calm while she was missing because this was her dream and she was highly trained and well-prepared. maybe some people still don't agree, but its definitely not like they're just absolutely crazy/bad parents.

  60. 60

I would like to see a show on kids taking risks and venturing out. Where would we be if it weren't for young people taking chances. Would America have been discovered? advances in Medicine, Science, Math thanks to Madame Currie, Einstein, Edison…even Bill Gates started young and dropped out of college to pursue his passion. We are raising a generation of lazy, apathetic kids who watch TV all day.

  61. 61

    what a bunch of doucheballs.
