This is an unbelievably lovely gesture.

Brent Sopel of the Chicago Blackhawks will be marching with his wife and children in Chicago's Gay Pride Parade in honor of his friend, the late Brendan Burke!

Sopel says:

"When Brendan came out, Brian stood by him, and his whole family stood by him, like every family should. We teach our kids about accepting everybody. Tolerate everybody, to understand where everyone is coming from."

Sopel will also be marching with the Stanley Cup as a representation of the team's support of gay rights!

Amazing! We think Brendan would be very proud of all of them!

Thoughts??

"Sogel will also be marching with the Stanley Cup as a representation of the team's support of gay rights!"

    ….atleast spell his name right

  2. 2

That's great, especially from a professional hockey player. It's a step in the right direction to remove the stigma with gays in professional sports.

  3. 3

My thoughts are if you think its so great at least spell the guys name right gawd you're a moron, its SOPEL not SOGEL douche bag

    This is wonderful!

  6. 6

    Loves it!

  7. 7

    Thoughts??

Well, my thoughts would be that this post is riddled with misspellings and mistakes.

  8. 8

    just more of your buggary

  9. 9

    Awesome. Finally a feel-good story.

  10. 10

Thus tarnishing the image of the Stanley Cup forever.

  11. 11

Brendan Burke has made a huge change in hockey. its sad he isnt around to see it. Daddy Burke should be proud!

  12. 12

Lets see we have this story, the one about the lesbo chick going to see the Obamanation, the 10 year old kid that you would love to get you hands on and so on and so on…..enough of this gay crap already you friggin swish

  13. 13

PS…..your Mother still dresses you funny

  14. 14

Another step in the right direction.

  15. 15

I hope no pansies are allowed to touch Lord Stanley's Holy Grail.

  16. 16

Of course! He's Canadian. Canada has had EQUAL same-sex marriage for over 5 years now. We've gotten over the whole "gay" thing a long time ago. It's past the time for the US to get into the 21st century, instead of the times of superstitions and witch burning.

  17. 17

I'm proud to be a hockey fan.

  18. 18

    Very cool!

  19. 19

    BLACKHAWKS ALL THE WAY BAAAAAABY!

  20. 20

I cannot wait to watch him make history. I am so thankful to live in a wonderful city where gay/lesbian/transgender is soooo accepted!!! I am proud not only to be a Chicagoian, but a Hawks fan!!!

  21. 21

integrity is a gift we give to ourselves.

  22. 22

woo hawks lol well i mean the cup is all over chicago right now, obvs itd go to the parade if it can be in some lame ass elk grove parade

  23. 23

that is so fucking GREAT!! I love it!!

  24. 24

You haven't a fucking clue who Brendan and Brian Burke are, do you? You look like a real pansy reporting anything to do with sports. Still to the fucking figure skating and Johnny Weirdo. He's more you cup of tea. Fuck yourself.

  25. 25

    SOPEL!!!!!! LETS GO HAWKS!!!!

  26. 26

Im very proud of you and most people wouldn't do that. Congrats on the Stanley Cup win

  27. 27

That's awesome. I love my hockey boys. Way to go John McDonough and Sopel. Makes me proud to be a hockey fan.

  28. 28

Awesome gesture by Brent and the Hawks!!!

As for you, Perez… Hire a fucking writer who can double check a post before posting it. For all the dough you rake in on this site, you could at least try to make it seem like you give a shit.

  29. 29

Way to go Chicago Gay Hockey Association for inviting the Blackhawks and the Stanley Cup to march with them in the parade!!!

  30. 30

This is a personal story to my family. It's really important that Brendan leaves a legacy of peace and acceptance. So, Perez, c'mon fix this. It's great that hockey is making big strides towards equality. Every player should pay attention to this.

  31. 31

Brent SOPEL has been my fav hockey player every since i first saw him when he played with the Vancouver Canucks ( Go Canucks). Reading this story has made me respect him even more! Oh and jj It is SOPEL not sogel!

  32. 32

As a big hockey fan, and a gay man, I really appreciate this.

  33. 33

its reported that the blackhawks are all marching, not just sopel.

  34. 34

My thought are that this is just one more example of the great people hockey players are. So many people don't understand what gentlemen they are. It is an amazing sport full of honor tradition sportsmanship and class. (But as soon as they are on the ice they will rip each others heads off its what makes the sport great :)

  35. 35

Re: Mad Dog – Oh shut the fuck up. How is this tarnishing the Stanley Cup? Messier was bisexual for godsakes and he hoisted it. If it's all of a sudden being "tarnished" because a team is marching in a gay pride parade, then it was "tarnished" years ago.

I'm not a Blackhawks fan by any means (although I do have quite a crush on Toews), but this is a really great thing that's being done here.

  36. 36

    Capitals fan here, btw.

  37. 37

i enjoy reading your site. but I do have to say you really emphasize on gay issues! I understand that you are gay and this is what matters to you but it is celebrity gossip to talk about teens going to prom or not going because of there sexuality. I am over all your gay talk. It is all the agy people sayd "it should matter a persons sexuality" then it's all the gay people always talking about it. If it doesn't matter quit talking about it and drawing attention to it.

  38. 38

I think it's great that the Blackhawks are doing this!!! I have to admit that I jumped on the bandwagon during the playoffs

@kaylzx: I too am a Caps fan and I also have a little crush on Toews (even with his Toewsface) lol

  39. @v@ says – reply to this

    39

This is a decent gesture on the part of the Hawks organization; and is a show of support for the late openly gay athlete Brendan Burke and in particular for his father, Brian Burke, who is currently the President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, and was the General Manager for the United States national men's ice hockey team for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver. As a hetero Flames fan, I nonetheless tip my hat to the Blackhawks here.

  40. 40

too bad he is no longer a blackhawk as of today :(

  41. 41

Because of this, the Bkackhawks traded Sopel hahahaha.

  42. 42

Re: kaylzx – Sorry but sports are for real men, not sissies.

  43. 43

    Re: Mrs.W! – go away

  44. 44

Re: Mad Dog – And? Sopel's not the gay one here, bro. He had a friend who was gay, and the gay friend's father happens to be Brian Burke, GM of the Toronto Maple Leafs and GM of Team USA. I don't see how this is a problem at all.
