Restaurant Receives Backlash (And Bomb Threats) For Serving Lion Burgers In Honor Of The World Cup!

| Filed under: Wacky, Tacky & TrueZportz

In honor of South Africa hosting the world cup, a restaurant in Arizona has been serving a lion burger, which is rightfully causing quite a bit of backlash from animal rights activists!

Apparently, the meat being used is from an actual lion friend raised at a free range farm in Illinois, and although it's uncommon to eat that kind of meat, it's not illegal.

The owner of the restaurant in question, Il Vinaio, Cameron Selogie, says:

"In Africa they do eat lions, so I assume if it's OK for Africans to eat lions then it should be OK for us. We thought that since the World Cup was in Africa that the lion burger might be interesting for some of our more adventurous customers. Most of them, when we tell them the facts, that this is farm raised and it doesn't hurt the endangered animals, seem pretty reasonable."

The restaurant has been inundated with angry e-mails, and even a bomb threat!

Personally, we think serving cooked lion just to honor a sport takes it a lot little too far! We bet that poor lion friend had a nice life on his farm in Illinois!

What do U think?? Should restaurants be serving lion burgers??

If it is farm raised, no different from cattle.

  2. 2

That is seriously messed up, and disgusting. When he mentions that they eat Lions in Africa, is he referring to a tribe? Because, some tribes eat human remains too…so……..

  3. 3

IMHO if people are so opposed to it then they shouldn't eat the darn thing and shut up about it.
Bomb threats? Some nutjobs in this world.

  4. 4

You know what else they have in africa? Genocide and whole families dying of the AIDS virus. Why don't we just bring all of it to America? If your gonna half-ass it there's just no point.

  5. 5

It might sound horrible to us Westeners, but lions aren't endangered species. Don't we also consume ostrich, alligator, and bison burgers? I just think it's culture shock. Correct me if you think I”m wrong, though (even though I know some of you will call me an idiot, dumb, etc.)

  6. 6

As long as Arizona is kicking out the filthy fucking illegals, they can do no wrong. Yay Arizona!

  7. 7

don't you eat cows? chickens? pigs? if you don't, then i understand your anger..but if you do, you're being a hypocrite.

  8. 8

Is it bad that I now want to know what lion taste like? :/

  9. 9

Why is eating a lion thats farm raised any different than eating a cow? You are stupid as fuck, just like anyone that gets offended by this.

  10. 10

  11. 11

Everyday I'm more and more repulsed by the audacity of the human race.

  12. 12

    you're such a hypocrite
stop pretending you're for animal rights if your sight on the issues is so fucking limited
poor cute lions, they're fun for us to look at, how could they die? but cows/chickens/pigs are all a-OK. no one's gonna miss them. they can be put in disgusting surroundings, raised in factories, fed disgusting things - shut the fuck up!

  13. 13

Such beautiful and strong creatures should NOT be raised on farms to be eaten! That is DISGUSTING.
There was a mother lion on Animal Planet who lost her baby cubs and took in a baby deer. Animal experts said that she does this because she experienced some sort of trauma from losing her cub.
These animals have FEELINGS and SO MUCH MORE FEELINGS THAN WE CAN EVER UNDERSTAND OR KNOW. STOP BEING IGNORANT…. and it's so funny how human beings claim to be so above other creatures on this earth yet they are BARBARIC and although they claim to have a conscience, they tend to not use it.
When are we going to stop slaughtering animals for meat that isn't even good for us?
    I'm disgusted.

  14. 14

i wouldn't eat lion, but why is eating a lion any worse than my eating a kind, innocent cow.

somehow bomb threats against local restaurant owners seems even more vile to me. stop being a violent extermist get the item legally banned or start some sort of peaceful anti-lion campaign or something. Overall, i wouldn't worry, i don't think eating lion is really going to take off.

  15. 15

Re: Jazz-hands Chaz – agreed! if it isnt endangered/illegal or hurt more in the killing process, there is no difference between eating this and any other meat. so many meat eaters are hypocrites.

  16. 16

um….if you are against eating lion, then you should be against eating all meat. I hate moral relativists. hypocrites.

  17. 17

    Re: parallelo

  18. 18

Just leave the poor lions alone, but bomb threats, come on!

  19. 19

I'm a vegetarian, and I believe the killing of any and all animals is wrong. But I'm sure most carnivores would agree with me that eating a lion is absolutely revolting and so, so, sad. Aren't pigs/cows/chickens enough for you?

  20. 20

  21. 21

No diff from any other animal we eat…Im sure all those other animals we slaughter raised on free range farms have a happy life and no one bats an eye, who cares?

  22. _ar says – reply to this

AS A SOUTH AFRICAN, I CAN ASSURE YOU WE DO NOT EAT LIONS. IT IS NOT A COMMON PRACTICE AT ALL! WHAT A PRIMITIVE ASSUMPTION! This restaurant clearly needs to find a better way to honor the world cup!!!!

  23. 23

I love animals, don't get me wrong.. but how is this any different from the restaurant selling regular beef burgers? Why fight for the lions but not for cattle? Some people are really dumb. Why worry about what other people are putting in there mouths? Seriously, if I was a vegetarian I wouldn't care what other people ate… as long as I stuck to what I thought was right.

  24. 24

I bet it is really lean meat. I would order it if I was there. Welcome to America why be mad at a place for serving it be mad at the farm that raised it. Or be nothing about it this is America land of the free unless some hippie dislikes what you are doing.

  25. ggaa says – reply to this

soooo if you did your research the lions ARE NOT FARM RAISED the meat comes from a seller in IL, a middleman, if you will, the meat really comes from a guy that was jailed back in early 2000 for selling endangered animal meat, fur, skin. the animals such as the lions that come from this butcher shop kills the animals for the fur and skin the meat is a byproduct that doesnt even sell for a lot of $ its 10 dollars for a leg of ostrich what devestates me is that ppl r ignorant. STOP EATING MEAT ALL TOGETHER WE WERE MEANT TO SHARE THIS PLANET NOT DESTROY ITS BEAUTY!

  26. 26

Absolute bullshit! The standard in Africa is a mostly meat free vegetarian diet! I'm so disgusted with how evil, inhumane, and un-evolved you supporters are! Hope someone raises you to be eaten! We need less of your fucked up kind!

  27. 27

    Re: DontKnowDontCare
"Such beautiful and strong creatures should NOT be raised on farms to be eaten!"

You could say the same thing about horses. Horse meat is widely consumed in parts of Europe and Asia but I don't see you complaining about that.
Really, if you're gonna complain about the consumption of one animal you might aswell complain about the consumption of all animals.

  28. ggaa says – reply to this

oh and lions are on the threatened list one knotch next to being endangered do sum research plz

  29. 29

I don't give a shit it is not endangered.

  30. 30

African Lions are considered endangered as of only recently and that's the only thing that troubles me. Every captive lion should be bred for conservation of the species, not for consumption… unless their numbers are stable. If the lions weren't endangered, I wouldn't object.

Besides, if lions had a naked rat-like tail, snake-like eyes, and scales for manes, no one would think of them as majestic/eye-candy-ish creatures that must be respected or else… there's wouldn't be ANY oh noes, oh noes how-dare-they-serve-lion-burgers…

  31. 31

What an idiot! They DO NOT eat lions in Africa- lived in South Africa all my life, been to most African countries and I've never heard of such a thing. I've never even seen a lion for heaven's sake…you'd have to go to a remote game reserve if you want to see any wild animals here. What I do know is that if you are willing to pay a ridiculous amount of money, you can hunt for and kill a lion on a private game reserve, but it must take place under strict regulation…quite sick, mostly european and american tourists who go for it…

  32. 32

For all the people that said they were offended by this in the comments section, I sincerely hope you are vegetarians. I don't believe in placing value on one life more than another, and find this just as offensive as the greedy piggish consumption of cows, pigs, etc. Human beings are omnivores, meaning we do not need meat to survive. So why do we eat it? Because we're greedy, we're slobs, we have no respect for our bodies and we have no respect for the sanctity of life. If people are outraged about this, they should direct their anger to the farmers who raised this animal only to slaughter it. Or, instead of being outraged, try practicing what you preach and stop shoveling meat into your disgusting, overweight, ignorant mouth.

  33. 33

    Leave all animals alone, perverts!

  34. 34

    Re: DontKnowDontCarePreach it, brother!

  35. 35

WTFFF!!! i'm from south africa and LION was never on my plate! thats bullshiz!!! okay okay and now im calm. But why does lion meat sound appealing[then again why does cow meat sound appealing??] idk but their statement shouldnt have been the africans eat it why cant we?? they shoulda just been like "YEAH WE SERVED IT!! SOO??"

  36. 36

So somehow eating lions is bad, but cattle are fair game? How does that make sense?

  37. 37

Umm, I've been living in Africa for the past two years and no one eats fucking lions, so how is this celebrating Africa and South Africa? Why don't you just hang up the South African flag or buy some African art like the rest of us? Bomb threats are ridiculous but a petition and a letter to the government seems in order. Eating lions should be against the law!!!!!

  38. 38

Bomb Away!! Isnt there enough animals you meat eaters eat? your all sick! Stop eating anything that had a beating heart and a face!

  39. 39

    Re: Saosin – …because a lion isn't a "farm" animal. It belongs in Africa…duh.

  40. 40

Re: Lady In Black – no one eats lions in Africa so its not culture shock. Ostrich and alligators are usually specialty dishes eaten in high priced restaurants (it's still fucking weird if you ask me). Not even Bushmen eat lions (well usually). As a Westerner living in Africa, I can tell you that I have been to many places on the beautiful continent, and many resteraunts and I have yet to see Lion on a menu.

  41. 41

Re: Jazz-hands Chaz – Oh hell no.
Lions are much too noble and more intelligent than half the people on this planet. So if you are going to eat lions than you might as well justify eating people. So that's where I draw the line and there is no comparison to cattle.

  42. 42

Re: antiaphrodite – would you eat your cat?

  43. 43

Re: antiaphrodite – Because lions are much more noble and majestic - duh!

  44. 44

I can't fathom eating a lion. Mostly because I own pet cats and eating a close relitive creeps me out. I know everyone is saying "oh but we eat pigs and all that" Keep in mind a lot of people would be up in arms if it was domestic cats and dogs being used as burger. Just a thought.

  45. 45

    Re: GoldenJew – Amen.

  46. 46

In AFRICA they eat lions. So, if Africans ate their shit, apparently people in the U.S. would do the same. "Sure, I'll have a pile of shit. They eat it in Africa, you know." BYE, I'm a treehugging PETA member. I wouldn't eat any animal. I'll leave that to the rest of you carnivores.

  47. 47

if this bothers you, then you shouldnt be eating any meat

  48. 48

LION - the OTHER white meat.

  49. 49

I can't say that I'm surprised. I mean, parents take their children to Animal Prisons for "fun." That is SO sick!

Poor animal. May it rest in peace. As if we have to eat everything that moves…

  50. 50

  51. 51

funny how people think its wrong to eat a lion burger, yet they are fine with all of the cows being killed for beef burgers! Makes so sense!

  52. SV says – reply to this

Ummmm but the owner saying "they eat Lion in Africa" that is totally false!!!!!

  53. 53

How about we start eating humans then? I'm sure its customary in African tribes as well. The audacity of these cumstains, these wastes of life that would take such a graceful, majestic creature and think EATING it would be appropriate is barbaric.

  54. 54

Re: BELLABABY12 – Yes it does make sense! Because lions are more NOBLE! I wrote that above - you moron! They are the kings of the jungle! Are you stupid?!

  55. sanaa says – reply to this

Eating lion is not the same as eating cow. Cows are big, slow, flesh-heavy herbivores just begging to get eaten and harnessed to a plow, that. Lions are like us, our fellow hunters, clever and bloodthirsty. This is akin to cannibalism.

  56. 56

This is how the hindus view us, can't believe we eat meals made from cows. As long as they aren't endangered, I don't see the big deal. I will say that meat from predator type animals is not as tasty as vegetarian type animals.

  57. 57

Re: ggaa – uhhhhhh we were "meant to share this planet?" then why did we evolve as omnivores? jebus, take a science class. there's nothing wrong with eating meat, it's the way we're made. It's the best source of fat and protein out there… and we NEED fat. Research is showing that people who eat a diet low in saturated fat are more likely to develop alzheimers.

  58. 58

Re: GoldenJew – uhhhhhhh what do you think that an omnivore is? it's a creature that eats both other animals AND plants. Bears, for instance, are omnivores.

  59. 59

Perez! You forgot to mention that they are only making less than 20 (about15) for dinner time. This isn't something that's being made all day long and hey I would totally drive the 20mins to go eat it mostly because I was a culinary student. Open you pallet ppl!

  60. 60

Re: michael89 – Since you don't know me and all, I would assume you would ask me if I eat meat and if I am against any type of animal meat being consumed even though the line "eating meat that isn't even good for us" should kind of speak for itself. I don't eat meat of any sort and I volunteer at shelters as well as planning to open animal sanctuaries one day.
I am against the killing of ALL animals for any type of food, hunting, fur, etc. It is barbaric, unnecessary and wrong.

  61. 61

Nasty. I'm not a vegetarian [I wish], but that ain't normal. If it ain't cow or chicken, leave it be, and I don't really like chicken anymore.

  62. 62

  63. 63

Re: The Head Honcho – Thanks! Sister* lol =)

  64. 64

whats wrong with this people!!!! that is seriously disgusting

  65. 65

been to Africa and not once did I see Lion on the menu!

  66. 66

    Re: bugszoom98

    im sure you eat cow
so how is it any different
    dont be a close-minded fuckface

  67. 67

I would like to take a moment to remind those of you who are vegetarians to take your B 12 supplement.

  68. 68

I hope they fucking die!!! I almost cried over this!!! HOW DARE THEY KILL LIONS?!

  69. 69

In Africa they also live in squalor, practice female genital mutilation, and genocide. Hooray for Africa!

This is pretty damn disgusting that slaughtering a species that is so close to being endangered is legal here. Despicable!

  70. 70

It's a bit strange, but it was a farm raised animal. What makes it so different than a cow, chicken or pig. Sure it's not meat that people are used to eating, but once again, it was a farm raised animal.

  71. 71

I'm from Arizona and I'm a vegetarian (weird I know.) To me, eating lion is even more taboo/offensive/whatever because the animals we (people in general) usually eat are not carnivores. It takes up to 17 pounds of grain to produce one pound of meat (cow, chicken, pig) for human consumption. I can't even imagine what the ratio is for a lion. How could I live with myself squandering resources to indulge in something like that when people are dying of starvation all over the world. I understand that we have always been omnivores and eaten meat thru history. However, we also used to die around 40 and there weren't 7 billion people vying for the same amount of resources. We've been living high on the hog for too long. Time's up.

  72. 72

Aren't lions on the endangered species list? If so, how is it NOT illegal ?

  73. 73

  74. sanaa says – reply to this

  75. 75

Plus - I hate the argument that just because we do one bad thing what is the difference if we do more bad things. Like "Oh - well we eat cows. So why is it bad to eat a lion." That is such a dumb argument. It is like "Oh - I dropped my gum wrapper on the ground. I might as well dump the entire trash can out on the ground." Just a dumb, dumb argument.

  76. 76

Re: parallelo – Why don't we jsut eat you then sense we eat everyhting esle - STFU

  77. 77

Nothing those cretins in Arizona do is surprising. The lowest of the low, ugly inside and out!

  78. 78

    That is not right.

However,it is also NOT by ANY means right to threaten an establishment with a bomb because you don't agree with what they are doing! What is wrong with people these days?! Becoming a fucking terrorist because the whole word doesn't see eye to eye with them?! Disgusting.

  79. 79

    Re: Eldridge Cleaver
    Ugh, another teabagger-nutjob.
I feel disgraced by just living in the same country as you.

  80. 80

Shayna Beevers a Tulane Grad killed an african Lion at a scummy "farm"-google her name. or read about on The Sun website.

Free range=Canned hunting. I hope and pray those people involved with killing lions and cooking all get a visit by ELF and ALF. disgusting useless excuses for humanity.

  81. 81

  82. 82

fuck lions, they'd eat YOU if they had the chance so who cares if we eat them. that's what animals are here for.

  83. 83

    Re: ScreamVengeance

Stupid shithead dim ass. A LION IS NOT A CHICKEN or a soya plant-it is a TOP PREDATOR like we are. You should die.

  84. 84

Re: lotus17 – WHY? Because in the food chain a Lion is at the top and a cow is prey. And idiots WILL NOT PASS LAWS TO PROTECT EXOTIC ANIMALS. It is foul. GO ELF AND GO ALF!!!

  85. 85

I hope the restaurant burns to the ground.

  86. 86

You people are idiots. Lions ARE an endangered species, and it is morally wrong to kill them just for the sake of eating them at a fast-food restaurant! Hasn't anyone seen The Lion King? How can you even imagine eating SIMBA?

Plus, if any of you actually had a formal education, you would realize that eating carnivores results in the lowest energy-intake from any food source. Most of our energy comes from plants and vegetation, since the food chain causes a huge reduction in energy intake after each level. IT IS NOT ENERGETICALLY BENEFICIAL TO EAT THE MEAT OF A CARNIVORE. So, there IS a huge difference between eating a cow and a lion!

  87. 87

I am completely pissed off that this lying assfuck is claiming Africans eat Lion which is bullshit since they have a mainly vegetarian diet! As a vegetarian (no meat, chicken, fish for the past 16 years) I am completely grossed out by the thought of eating any carcass. I am hurt and disillusioned as I am reminded that I live in a world where most people condone the murder of innocent animals. I believe that killing an animal for any other reason other than self defense or starvation is really fucking gross and barbaric and evil and wrong! I hate that I am in the minority in these beliefs, I just hope the animal ingesters/consumers evolve a bit quicker and give up carcass for good! It's rotting in your stomach and takes longer to shit out you know!

  88. 88

thats horrible. I don't get how countries can eat animals such as lions, dog , etc ..but lions are an ENDANGERED SPECIES for fuck sake shame on them I hope anyone who eats lion is attacked by a lion and killed haha wouldn't that be karma and irony. They deserve it. There are plenty of other animals that aren't endangered to eat. Stupid sick fucks.

  89. 89

this is absolutely deplorable!! And this is where the phrase "if so and so jumped off a bridge would you, too?" Absolutely unnecessary. Just because some people might eat lions in Africa is no reason they should have it in America. Ever. Stoning people to death is still acceptable in some countries in the Middle East so hey, maybe we should just do it over here too.

  90. 90

    They all should die.

  91. 91

  92. 92

is it ok, well would a kentucky fried bald eagle be ok ? or how about panda or koala burgers ? bbq california condor? willy whale burgers?

  93. 93

Re: lotus17 – It's worse, at least I think it's worse, because large cats (lions, tigers, cheetahs, etc) are more intelligent than cows (not saying it's okay to slaughter cows either!!) and therefore have the capacity to learn and observe far more than a cow can. It's terrible for a human to hold captive such a powerful and majestic creature, all for the taste buds of some ignorant person at a restaurant who thinks it might be "fun" to try a lion, especially when WE IN AMERICA DO NOT NEED IT. It would be different if everyone had to actually go out and hunt and kill their own food for SURVIVAL. However, this is just for amusement, which makes it incredibly sad.

  94. 94

  95. 95

Re: Saosin – You are far too ignorant to try and explain why it's different. I would call you "stupid as fuck" but i'm not going down to your level.

  96. 96

Re: Pretty on the Inside – You are a disgrace so you should be disgraced. Siding with the filthy lawbreaking illegals before you side with American citizens? I'm not disgraced by you, I'm sick of your shit and so are the good people of Arizona. I guess you won't come to my Happy Deportation party this summer? I'm serving lion if you are interested…

  97. 97

Re: ScreamVengeance – Thanks for posting this, since obviously so many of the people on this site are very ignorant.

  98. 98

Re: Rayveniael – Actually, they are endangered. But I still wouldn't expect you to "give a shit".

  99. 99

    …..i want a lion burger

  100. 100

Re: BELLABABY12 – You have to keep in mind, lions are far more intelligent than cows are, so I think that is what bothers people the most. Lions have the intelligence to learn tricks (just one example), which is something cows can't even come close to. Just an example of the difference between a cow and a lion, which it seems that a ton of people on this site need an explanation about.
