Morbid Deadliest Catch Episode Pulls In Huge Ratings.

| Filed under: R.I.P.Sad SadYouTubeReality TV

Although this is a little more morbid than we prefer, it apparently was a huge ratings draw.

Tuesday night's episode of Deadliest Catch, which featured the late Capt. Phil Harris suffering a serious stroke and then being hospitalized (above), had an audience of about 5.4 million people, with 17% more viewers than ever before.

What do U think?? Did U tune in just to see the emergency??

Thats because humans are fucked up creature that like to see horrible things happen to people. Thats why we get off on reality tv. Just to see someones feeling hurt….Sick Sick Sick. I guess its just a fascination with morbidity

  2. 2

    dude the guy died.

    this is just fucked up.

showing a man die for good ratings?

  3. 3

tv has gotten really strange. i think it says alot about us.

  4. 4

Re: kaddict – @ 2 - yeah, i agree - i won't watch the above clip…….further validates what an ass mario is also for posting it……

  5. 5

People watched this not because it was "f*cked up" or "morbid" but because people who have been watching this show for a long time had a lot of respect for him. He was a household name for a lot of people and his death was very sudden and tragic. People just want to know what happened. It's the same as all the people who kept up with the live media coverage of Micheal Jackson, except this didnt happen to be live.

  6. 6

Would you watch someone being born? Death is a part of life. People die, we all die. Hiding from it doesn't make it go away.

  7. 7

They didnt show him die….they showed him being lifted on a strecher covered in blankets and H2o mask…People have watched capt phill for 5yrs and feel they have a bond with him and his sons…..you know damn well if this was Mario the Pedo caught dying on film it would break 20mil viewers

  8. 8

Yes, I did. But only because I have been following Phil and his for years and it was a shock when they announced his death. On this episode all they show is the finding of Phil and him being taken away by the ambulance. Phil was responding to questions asked of him he did not die until sometime later.

  9. 9

    Far from morbid
Sad and tragic? Yes. But again, FAR from morbid.

    Morbid Definition
1 a : of, relating to, or characteristic of disease b : affected with or induced by disease c : productive of disease
2 : abnormally susceptible to or characterized by gloomy or unwholesome feelings
    3 : grisly, gruesome

  10. 10

Before Capt. Phil died he asked that the cameras keep rolling and that everything be shown. For those of us who feel like we lost a friend because we watched from the first show, it was hard to watch. We watched out of respect.

  11. 11

    Miss you bunches, Capt. Phil!!

  12. 12

Been there. Got the T-shirt. The family/crew/channel sucks donkey for making money from the most vulnerable point of someone's life. Is the episode when they pulled the plug next?

  13. 13

I'm not sick or morbid. I've watched the show for 6 years, so why would I stop now? I wanted to see what actually happened. I liked Capt. Phil. he was cool. And actually, seeing the scenes with him and his sons looking at old family photos and having a good laugh together was nice.

  14. 14

As seen in the Los Angeles Times…

"With only three episodes left to produce when he suffered a stroke Jan. 29, Harris wasn't about to let his medical problems get in the way of the story. Unable to speak after part of his skull had been surgically removed, Harris scribbled on a note pad, "Keep filming. There has to be an end to the story."

  15. 15

Phil was my favorite-it was his wish for the cameras to keep rolling. Its a lesson to smokers and people who stress out due to work(like myself). The crew of the Cornelia Marie feels like family. I worry about the boys. RIP Phil.

  16. 16

My hubby and I have watched this show for years now. Capt. Phil has lived a rough life. The way that he treated his body finally caught up with him. It just happened to occur when cameras were on the boat. Very tragic situation. People who chain smoke like Capt Phil did should be aware that they could suffer the same fate. Heart attacks and strokes are other realities beyond just cancer for smokers.

  17. 17

This is just great, you get to see the poor kid lose his father and they air it just after father's day. people are a$$ holes

I love Captain Phil! We've been watching him since the beginning….only someone that hasn't watched the show would say it is morbid.

Captain Phil wanted us to watch, he wanted an end to his story! If you are honoring his wishes, it's disrespectful not to watch this episode.

    Rest In Peace Captain Phil!

  19. 19

Re: Minoah27 – AMEN,, well said

  20. 20

I love this show and I loved Capt. Phil….any follower of the show understands that it was not a ratings thing for showing Phil's stroke which we all now know leads to his death. Showing this is a way for his fans and followers of Deadliest Catch to say their goodbyes. It has for me at least.

  21. 21

Oh wow, that is sad. I can't believe they showed it. RIP!

  22. 22

I think people are looking at this the wrong way. It isn't morbid. If anything, it can help give people closure. People who have watched this show for years form a bond with these people. These people let us into their lives and we watch them live. They did not show him actively dying.
Death is a part of life. This was not exploiting the man, as I am sure if he or part of his family did not want this shown, it would not have been shown.

  23. 23

The only thing that was morbid was the BIRD they kept showing. Creepy! RIP Capt. Phil.

  24. 24

Re: Minoah27 – watching someone die, on a show that is for entertainment purposes, is not a sign of respect. People are fucking sick! Thats why ratings go up for shows like this, and way more people show up to tigers game after he cheats on his wife with dozens of ho-bags. Disgusting.

  25. 25

…nothing was morbid about this at all. People have been following the show for years, like me..and would like to see what led up to his death. They didn't show his death or anything… RIP Capt. Phill.

  26. 26

I love Deadliest Catch and I was happy to meet Captain Phil Harris before he passed away. I watched the show but I have been watching the show since day one. If I was Captain Phil's family I would not have allowed that footage to be shown.
    ***********RIP CAPTAIN PHIL HARRIS*********************

  27. 27

RIP Capt. Phil. I loooooove Josh and Jake. Phil was definitely my favorite on the show.

  28. 28

I watched it and it was so sad….I wonder if his boys will be taking over the boat for next season??

  29. 29

all you dumbasses watched it though!!!!!!!!!!!!!! your the fuckups!!!!!!!!

  30. 30

all you numb nuts listen up. Phil asked that this all be filmed. those of us who have followed him from the first show way back when are glad he did. it puts an end to his story and he knew months ago it would end this way. he even said he wouldn't be here forever. so back the fuck off his family !!!

  31. 31

Phil was very loved and respected by many, colleagues and fans who had been watching the show for years alike. His death brought such an outpour of sadness. He lived and actually recovered after this stroke just to later take a turn for the worse and pass. Phil himself asked the team to keep filming in the hospital. How much of that will be used we'll see in upcoming episodes.

I don't think it is morbid. It was done respectfully. Calm seas, Phil!

  32. 32

Re: Minoah27 – i agree. I have watched the show since it first aired.

  33. 33

MORBID MARIO!!!!!!! WOW, coming from a guy who posted a video of a man choking on a weed bag…..FUCK YOU MARIO!!! you don't make any sense!

  34. 34

Wouldn't call it morbid, but rather sad! Capt. Phil was the man and the show won't be the same without him :(

  35. 35

    So sad :( RIP

  36. 36

This episode was not morbid! My 13 year old son is addicted to Deadliest Catch and we watch every episode together! And just like others have said, Capt. Phil wanted the cameras rolling!

  37. 37

We watched. My husband is an avid fan of the show and felt if we didn't watch it's like shitting on his memory.

  38. 38

Oh how cynical we all are.

I think the footage was NOT done for ratings. After the death of Phil, the outpouring of love and grief from all the fans was overwhelming (I am a huge fan as well). I think the true fans watched it to answer questions about the events leading to his death. With any loved one, you sometimes just have to know all the morbid details so you can process your grief. These cameramen and crew have known each other for almost a decade now and when something like that happens, I think they were filming for the families and for the people that love him so they can be with him.

It's really sad how cynical we have all become that we assume this episode was for ratings. It was for closure above all other things. We are all mourning Phil, and watching his last moments on the boat can be a comfort b/c it was his favorite place to be - with his sons and crew around him.

  39. 39

Re: kaddict – SERIOUSLY? He died?? WOW this should be banned from t.v.!

What were the ratings for the last "Tudors" edisode on sunday? What a tremendous show. the final episode was the best TV show I've possible ever seen.

  41. 41

the episode b4 this one had Jake admitting to Phil that he had an addiction problem and the 1st part of the show the other night dealt with this. If you watch the show you would also know that Phil had health problems last year or year before and was off for 9 months. The last few shows he has been having health problems. I would think in this instance that they went to the family and asked them if they could show those scenes. To me what makes Phil and his sons that is so endearing is one minute they yell and scream at each other and 5 minutes later they are all made up. What a real family is really like.

  42. 42

I watched it…Phil was a badass and I really do miss him because I have been watching this show for a really long time and "got to know him" in a way. The people that tuned in to watch him die are fucked up. I actually watched this show fora long time before Phil's death.

  43. 43

since everyone knew phil died a few months ago i figured they would talk about it on the show. i had no idea they would actually be filming on his boat when he had the stroke.

it was pretty creepy watching the show this season knowing Phil was dead by the time it aired. i feel so bad for his sons.

    44

He endeared himself to many of those who watched him. We watched the show for years because we really admire him and all the other captains. There was nothing morbid about this.

  45. 45

I have loved Deadliest Catch for a long time and watched this show every Tuesday night anyway. Its because the way they advertised it. They advertised it as "the stroke episode", so people who dont normally watch that show, but watch the Discovery Channel, they saw the commercial and thought, "Oooh I'll watch that". Cause some people are a little morbid. I dont think Id call the episode morbid. It was done respectfully. They never even filmed him when they found him in his room. The episode that announces his death should be in the next week or two. LOVE YOU PHIL. Rest In Piece.

  46. 46

I watch the show every week. However, I think more tuned in to pay respect to Phil's family. To let them know how much they cared for and respected him. You can only write so many fan letters to convey the feeling. The ratings reflect the general sentiment that Phil was well thought of and how upset everyone was to hear of his passing.

  47. 47

I have watched the show since day 1 just like other devoted fans have, Capt. Phil will totally b missed. "What do U think?? Did U tune in just to see the emergency??" Perez, go fuck urself, pig! People tuned n because they wanted 2 c him 4 the last time & pay their respects.

  48. 48

I love Deadliest Catch. I watch the show like I do every Tuesday. The Cornelia Marie is my favorite boat. I watched this show for years. Those who followed Captain Phil since his stroke knew what was going to happen. And besides this is what Phil wanted, he wanted an end to his story. I thought Discovery did a good job and Josh said it himself.

  49. 49

Re: Minoah27 – amen to that and some people (MARIO) continue to report on every time a Jackson farts….

    50

umm YOU think its too morbid for you? what about when you posted the video of the guy getting arrested and choking on his drugs???? Fuck you are an idiot… the ultimate fame whore.

  51. 51

Some of you guys OBVIOUSLY don't watch the show and you OBVIOUSLY keep up on things. If you keep watching you will see when this man comes out of a medicinally induced coma he writes a note to the producers telling them to keep filming. Phil wanted it filmed, he wanted it shown, he wanted an ending to his story.

Don't talk about what you don't know, because if you did know then you wouldn't be questioning the Discovery Channel's decision to air this.

These guys on this show aren't just a bunch of dudes catching crab to their fans. They are like family and even though we don't, we feel like we know them personally. They've been a part of our lives for years now. Phil leaves a HUGE legacy to his sons. This happened five months ago in real time, but this is the first time the fans see what happened to him.

Phil, you are missed, you are loved. Bless you, your boys, your crew and the rest of the fleet.

  52. 52

    Re: Don02895

You're damn right on that! They all need to back off Discovery Channel for airing it and the fans for watching.

  53. 53

    Re: emzie

Don't forget those Miley Cyrus pictures too, Perez is THE biggest hypocrite.

  54. 54

There was nothing morbid about this….Capt.Phil was by far my favorite person on this show. He will be missed soo much and I know for the people who dont watch this show like alot of us do they would never understand the complete sadnes some of us feel. My thought and prayers are with the family!
