Joan Rivers recently decided that it's stoopid for male celebrities to come out of the closet, and proved just how old and out of touch she is by arguing her case!
She claims:
"If you’re going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you’d be an ass to come out and say you’re gay. That’s why Ricky Martin was so smart — he did what he did, he made his millions, and then he said, “Guess what, everybody? I’m gay, I’m having this life, and here are my children.” It didn’t matter anymore because he didn’t have to bring in 16-year-old girls.
If you’re looking at someone who’s your idol, thinking that maybe one day they’ll come ring your doorbell, you don’t want to hear, “There’s no chance in hell, honey, but still buy a ticket to the movie.”
We suppose a fanbase of young gay men looking for a role model just isn't needed by these celebrity idols!
Luckily, Joan is so old at this point that she can just write off everything she says as "Back in my day…" rambles! Let's just hope she sticks to topics she actually knows about next time!

I know she means selling a brand is important - if you are a "brand" (example: Boy Band) and your "brand" targets tween girls….coming out as gay changes the message of that brand, which = you don't reach/sell to your target audience.

Unfortunately, she is right. Still, to some extent, this is pretty true.
This isn't 'Don't ask, don't tell', or anything even remotely political. If you're trying to make a career out of having a massive fan base and making the millions, you appeal to the masses. If that means staying in the closet as far as the public eye goes, that's the smartest way to get to top. If you want to be yourself and appeal to the gays, then you won't make as much money.
There's a pretty big difference between real life & who you really are, and show business & the persona you display.

Unfortunately she is right - it does effect the "sex symbol" status in regards to girls/ladies swooning over a star. If you know a actor is gay, you still love the actor as an actor but there is nothing to daydream about …. something is lost. Not saying it is fair but it is what it is.

I don't think she's out of line at all. What she said is true. Most young male entertainers, especially good looking ones, primary fanbases are young girls. She has a point, if Ricky Martin had come out at the height of his popularity, he would have lost a large part of his audience (i.e, young females). Of course he probably would have gained a large gay following, but that's a little too after the fact for most record labels.
She's only right if that target audience HAPPENS to be teen girls, however you can be a heartthrob and a sex symbol if your gay and come out and your target audience is gay people. Just no one has marketed themselves that way. But I bet nowadays if they did they would make just as much money. Gays might be a minority group but alot of us have alot of money and trust me we like to spend it.

However only 2% of the world is gay and not all straight people agree with my decision when selecting music. Joan is a smart business woman. When you are selling a product, you want the highest % of buyers to purchase it. The % of straight people in this world is higher than gay people. Marketing is a numbers game. Also, a gay artist has the right not to come out when they choose or not come out at all. Perez, you try to FORCE everyone to come out and the world to embrace it on Perez's terms. I don't think Joan's comment should be taken so much as "gay people should stay in the closet". ALL celebrities are marketing themselves, including you Perez. Do we hear about who you are dating, or who most celebrities are dating? I agree and disagree. Yes, stars get stimatized for coming out. But look at the music scene today. Lady Gaga, while not gay herself brings up her gay following alot and she's doing fine. Adam Lambert - while not setting any records yet in terms of sales, has a huge female fanbase who are aware of his sexuality. NSync may have had different success had Lance Bass came out earlier - but he didn't so we'll never really know. Although, the teenage girl and the gay market's have very similar tastes. It's mostly about what radio stations push anyway because with enough play and promotion, this segment will buy anything. Alejendro & Telephone by Lady Gaga are completely garbage songs - even by today's pop standards, yet they're hits. If you want a good Lady Gaga song, search the internet for Retro Physical. Why that was never released as a single or even on a CD, boggles me.
Joan is right. You've got to start out your career as openly gay if you wanna be out and act. But if you're a hot boy and you want to get a lot of work you stay in the closet. From what I understand many actors are out of the closet in their personal lives but in the closet to the public.
