Joan Rivers Is Out Of Touch!

wenn2888615jb.jpg

Oh, gurl! Did you nod off during the interview and forget that we live in 2010??

Joan Rivers recently decided that it's stoopid for male celebrities to come out of the closet, and proved just how old and out of touch she is by arguing her case!

She claims:

"If you’re going to be a romantic idol and try to get every teenage girl to love you, then you’d be an ass to come out and say you’re gay. That’s why Ricky Martin was so smart — he did what he did, he made his millions, and then he said, “Guess what, everybody? I’m gay, I’m having this life, and here are my children.” It didn’t matter anymore because he didn’t have to bring in 16-year-old girls.

If you’re looking at someone who’s your idol, thinking that maybe one day they’ll come ring your doorbell, you don’t want to hear, “There’s no chance in hell, honey, but still buy a ticket to the movie.”

We suppose a fanbase of young gay men looking for a role model just isn't needed by these celebrity idols!

Luckily, Joan is so old at this point that she can just write off everything she says as "Back in my day…" rambles! Let's just hope she sticks to topics she actually knows about next time!

What do U think?? Are Joan's comments out of line??

Joan makes a very good point. I'm also of the opinion that it doesn't matter what one's sexual orientation is. Gay, straight, lesbian, bi… who cares! I think Ricky Martin is a very good looking guy, for years I suspected that he may be gay (I'm a straight woman) but it didn't matter. He was nice to look at.
For one's career, they may opt to keep their preference quiet. Ultimately… who cares?

    2. 102

13 year old girls who buy every Twilight poster and DVD don't want to know that Taylor Lautner is gay. Clearly the guy is queer as a $3 bill, but little girls with crushes won't spend their money on a guy like Taylor if he admits that he is big old homo (which he is).

    3. 103

She's not wrong. Its just good business for anyone who's product is themselves. Ideally actors are being paid to convincingly portray fictional characters. However, today more than ever, an actor IS the product people are buying…..not their ability to act. If your mad at anyone mario, it should be yourself for perpetuating the obsession with actors' personal lives.

    4. 104

She doesn't live in my world. Girls of all ages don't care if you're gay or not. Hot is hot.

    5. 105

She is not out of touch…she is telling it like it is

    6. 106

she's just speaking the obvious truth, you're so righteous, it almost borders hipocrysy

    7. 107

She is 100% right. It's all about the fantasy.

    8. 108

      She is 100% correct!

    9. 109

She's totally right. Don't bash her just b/c its something you don't want to hear.

    10. 110

i agree with her and it looks like a lot of people do. how is she out of touch???

    11. 111

I think she has a good point. It was easier for YOU because I don't think there is anyone on earth that has dreamed of you ringing their doorbell. Whether you like guys or girls, you would have a hard time finding someone. Your just as ugly inside, as you are out. AND, there is no chance in hell American Idol would/should hire you, your pretty much the most hated person in Hollywood and your annoying. Your more catty than a girl, your not funny, your biased, and your bitter. The only thing you deserve is another punch in the face. ♥

    12. 112

      She's damn right!!

    13. 113

Sorry, I'm with Joan on this one. Ricky Martin was smart.

    14. 114

Looks like you are the one out of touch here Perez - like it or not she as a point. She is not out of touch and quit attacking her age. Guess it's too far out of your scope to even understand what she is saying.

    15. 115

      Shes 100% right!

    16. 116

Perez…YOU are the one that is increasingly out of touch, posts everything late and seems irrelevant any more!

    17. 117

She's smart. Make the millions and then live your life. That's what I'd say as well, IF your target group are teenage girls. It's show biz after all.

    18. 118

She is absolutely correct. The problem is all the little fan girls who will not allow these entertainers to be who they really are. The pitiful screaming/crying fanatics who want to believe that the object of their sad obsession will want them. Until they grow up and learn to appreciate the movie/music more then the actor/singer then coming out of the closet can -and probably will be- career suicide for most entertainers.
Just for an example look at Bill Kaulitz. If anyone even hints that he is gay all the little fan girls start a screamfest like it is the biggest insult ever. Why do they protest so much? Their reasoning is that he said he is not gay. Oh ok that is believable. He just knows that coming out would seriously hurt what is left of his career. He cries about how he can not find true love, and the little fan girls can dream about being the only one in the world to heal his oh so broken heart. This will continue until his band breaks up and he writes the inevitable tell all book.

    19. 119

Home girl is right. I'm gay but having an out gay man in a straight movie role often times isn't very convincing to me. If I was watching an actor act like a straight guy in a movie all I could think the whole time would be, I know he's really all about the cock. But then again there are a lot of gay actors in Hollywood who have been able to fool us so I could be wrong too, just not when it comes to Tom Cruise.

    20. 120

I think to have to come out is discriminatory. There's absolutely no need to come out publicly. If someone asks you can answer but I don't think people even should ask. It's just unnecessary and not important. I hate when people define themselves through their sexuality, straight or gay.

    21. 121

She's right. As a youngster, I was obsessed with George Michael, convinced that he would one day realize he loved me and we'd be together. Since I was a kiddo, my gaydar wasn't yet working (plus he was dating a woman back then). Had anyone told me he was gay, it would have ruined my dream and I probably wouldn't have spent all the $ and time I did on concerts, posters, t-shirts, tiger beat, etc. He was smart for staying in until he got outed.

    22. 122

      SORRY. YOU ARE WRONG.

      SHE IS 100% RIGHT.

YOU ARE DELUSIONAL, AND CAN'T SPEAK FOR HETEROSEXUAL WOMEN.

    23. 123

I am stunned by the above comments…NOBDODY SHOULD STAY IN THE CLOSET..INCLUDING CELEBRITIES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GAY BOYS AND GIRLS NEED ROLE MODELS WHO ARE OUT!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK CLOSET CASES! All you gay guys who say they agree with joan are self-hating.

    24. 124

      She has a point.

    25. 125

she is right and i don't think she is out of touch, i kinda think you are.

    26. 126

Did anyone really buy Ann Heche as a heterosexual, in a movie role, after she split with whatshername?

    27. 127

Oh come on…River's wasn't saying male celebrities shouldn't come out, River's was commenting on how unrealistic it would be for an openly gay artist to be as successful as someone like Ricky Martin who…back in his day…shot for the teen girl demographic. She isn't out of touch, you're just scavenging for drama.

    28. 128

I Agree Perez!! Reading the comments here…it's really sad how people favor money over LIFE. I say do whatever makes you feel comfortable. If someone decides not to come out that's alright, they obviously have their own reasons. I really don't know why people have to come out and make it official to begin with. I never announced to the world that I am straight. Just do what you do! However, I understand why one would not want to come out due to fear or rejection from friends, family and even society. However, not to come out because of a pay cheque that is really sad. Money is nothing but a piece of paper with man-made value. You're true value and worth is not caluculated by how much money your earn, but how much love you give.

Joan River's comments are out of line, even though there is truth to what she said. With great fame and popularity comes GREAT responsibility. She should be setting a better example for the world. Her being old is no excuse.

Gay's make the world much more colourful. AND REALLY…with 6 billion people on this planet perhaps it's time for all of us to get our Gay on, it's not like we need to worry about our species dying out anytime soon….

      129

I kinda agree but don't. I don't think is stupid to come out. I think is stupid tobased your career on getting girls to like you like he did. Don't grt mr wrong I think he's a great entertainer and I don't care that he's gay but I understand why he took so long to do this. For example, if someone like, well I ccan't think of anyone, but someone that weis just an artist and we care about his/her musci comes out no one would care. The "socking" thing here is that ALL or the majority of his music was about how musch he liked women. But I still love him and think he is GREAT

      130

I agree with her. It's not out of touch; it's on the mark. As soon as I find out that an actor is gay, I no longer find him/her believable in romantic roles. Also? There are WAY more straight women than there are gay men. It's not homophobia - it's mathematics.

    31. 131

Making morality judgements when you run a gossip site…

    32. 132

Joan is 110% right on! It's the truth! 16 year old girls are the top audience! Why should anyone have to comment on their personal life and orientation…gay or straight? Grow up Perez! Why do you have to be so flamboyant and in everyone's face?

    33. 133

she does have a point there..

    34. 134

Perez Joan is so NOT out of touch, she's living in the REAL world not hypocritical Hollywood!!!

    35. 135

Unfortunately she is right. With the hate in this country you had better keep your mouth shut and make the money beforehand. Anyone with half a brain should know that.

    36. 136

Ummm, I think her comment has merit. How large is a fan-base of "young gay men" compared to tweeny girls? Yes, statistically, they're a minority group, and financially, not as profitable. What Ricky Martin did wasn't at all right to himself or to the hoards of young girls, but it was something that certified his celebrity-status and bank account. As well, since it wasss AWHILE ago, he might not have been full aware of his sexual-orientation- he might have been confused.

    37. 137

I'm not really sure if what she said was out of line or not, but what i DO want someone to point out, is the fact that as long as we keep making this sexual orientation a big deal, its going to continue to BE one.

Which is to say, why is it that anytime someone is gay, they have to publicly announce it and "come out" ? All of a sudden, they're being interviewed and there's big headlines on every magazine proclaiming they're gay.

I don't see that being done when someone's straight. I don't see celebrities making public announcements about them being straight or being interviewed specifically about being straight.

If we want the gay community to be treated the same as everyone else and have the same rights, then we need to stop treating them differently and making it seem like being gay is something strange and unheard of to the point where we have to make announcements about it.

      Know what I mean?

    38. @v@ says – reply to this

      138

No, I don't think the comments are 'out of line', as you put it. They're just realistic. Joan pulls no punches, and never has. There's some wisdom in what she says; she's 77, and has seen what can happen first hand. A gay person may not like her pragmatism if they like and want to wear their sexuality, but audiences are 90% plus NOT gay, and they are the entertainment con$umers. You have to be cagey for yourself and pick which battles are the most important to you and your career and your life. What sexuality you are should actually be a private non-issue, imo, but I haven't lived the dichotomy so I might be missing something here while thinking as a hetero.

    39. 139

Re: Ü!!!SEMICOLON!!!bergeist – "I think to have to come out is discriminatory. There's absolutely no need to come out publicly. We don't hate gays.
Your statement beautifully articulates the conservative postion.
      -
Glambert really fucked up when he pushed that face in his crotch at an awards show. That stunt is for a bath house.
Joan Rivers has a completely different club routine than when she's on QVC. There's a time and a place.

    40. 140

She's absolutely right. She mentions that if you are trying to be a leading man and have girls fall in love with you then you can't be an out gay man. DUH! And you talk about gay guys needing idols. I agree, but who exactly has come on the scene, already out of the closet and become a gay role model. Adam Lambert? HAHAHA no but seriously the gay community is overdue for a hero and sorry but gaga expects loyalty from gays which is exactly why her gay fan base is much smaller than people think. backfire!

    41. 141

      she is absolutley right!

    42. @v@ says – reply to this

      142

If you want to be an on screen hetero leading man, but you spend your time selling your gayness instead of your acting, what do you expect? People buy what you're selling, and once they've bought that you're GAY, why would you expect them to easily buy you as a hetero leading man? That's a really tough switch for most people. They just want to see a believable movie. Use some sense.

    43. 143

Just because you are the BIGGEST flamer in the world, doesn't mean everyone has to follow your cause. I agree with her (and I'm gay)….if I was famous, hot, and trying to make bank, fuck every other gay person out there….if they want a hero, they can be the hero. Coming out links these people to people like…hmmmm I dunno people like you…flaming, uneducated, and opinion challenged.

You should spend your time walking through your closet trying to find the next suit you'll wear on a show where you're trying to defend yourself from "controversy" while trying to keep your ass outta jail…

      peace out 420-ers…

    44. 144

      agreed
nobody wants to know what u do in ur own bedroom

    45. 145

The only comments that are out of line are those by a mean,
vituperative, nasty, attention seeking online gossip columnist
who goes by the name of PEREZ HILTON.

    46. 146

She's right, not a homophobe, have a gay son I love and support - but get real Perez - your so out of touch and so riled up with your gay rights your losing sight of reality.

    47. 147

Say what you will about Joan, she tells it like it is, politically correct or not!

One day I hope being out in Hollywood won't cost an actor roles, but we aren't there yet by a long shot.

Joan ROCKS it! Her new documentary is BRILLIANT and really shows how many people confuse her comedy with her personal life. Her detractors take her more seriously than she does herself. LOVE her!

    48. 148

Joan is old enough to tell the truth, and so she did. i loves my gays, but she is right..if you want make teen idol cheddar..you have to appeal to the little girls…

    49. 149

I beleieve in gay marrige and gay people having equal rights. Joan is 100% correct. Not even near as many young girls will be screaming and buying tickets for someone who is "unavailable" to them.

    50. 150

She's not out of line at all. What she said was completely true and honest.

    51. 151

Re: scrawley – She's not using them as an example, she's commenting on Ricky Martin coming out.

    52. 152

Joan is absolutely right. Sorry Perez, but I think you're the one that's out of touch.

    53. 153

      joanie is always right!
gays lust after straights all the time, but i wouldnt waste my time fantasizing about someone i knew was gay.

    54. 154

Sorry but she's right! Think about it in terms of marketing: which one has the biggest target audience? Heterosexuals.
Sorry but we are talking money here!

    55. 155

It's the absolute truth. George Michael is a good example of what she's describing. Just because YOU'RE out in your life, doesn't mean EVERYONE has to be out. I wish you'd get that Mario.

    56. 156

perez u're a stupid, all these celebrities are coward only use the lgbt community as a centre of refuge when they've attained everything. when people like vanessa carlton, christina aguilera and co need to please these community LGBT, GLAAD, they come out telling us they're gay just to please the world. Please is this not smaring Ur community. The earlier u people address this topic the better.

    57. 157

lol, no they're not politically correct, but she's absolutely right! a gay man doesn't appeal to the majority (straight people).

    58. 158

Re: Brand0n2O1O – He broke up with you because you're an annoying twat who keeps repeating things over and over and over again !!!
      SHUT UP.

    59. 159

Ha-Ha! Everyone knew Ricky was gay! As a boy band'er his fanbase was girls…Now, why would he messed up his $? Would Miley come out as a lesbian when her fanbase are little girls? Think, Not! Artists are entitled to their private lives. IMO, YOU and others, are openly GAY to ca$h in! Umm? Weren't u hired by the pageant to ask…'the gay marriage question?' Straight folks know when someone is Gay, so, stop being so flamboyant about it! We know!!!! Now, act like a man!

    60. 160

I think she's right. The truth hurts…but if you are in the media and are trying to make a buck being a teen idol…you aim for the larger market not the smaller one. It's just business…she isn't talking about being a role model…she's talking about being an icon. Look at Adam Lambert…he's openly flamboyantly gay. He's rub it in your face I can do what gay pop icons like Gaga and Madonna do on stage as well mentality failed. Not even the gays supported him. Gay men are more likely to support a hot woman seducing the boys wearing skantly outfits than a guy trying to do the same. Other than Elton John….most openly gay male singers are duds in comparison to their closeted counter parts. George Michaels was far more successful closeted than out, as way Clay Aiken, Lambert, and nor Ricky.

    61. 161

Re: buck – huh? wear a condom…insist he wears a condom. If the person is irresponsible to have unprotected sex with any male that comes close to her she is playing with fire…doesn't matter if he is bi or straight. a "gay" male wouldn't jump into bed with a woman…if he was bi he would. please make the distinction because there is a a world of a difference between gay and bi males (and females for that matter).

    62. 162

Yep! Michael Jackson was GAY! We would still loved him like we love Ricky! He had to keep quiet bc his Mom is very religious whom he dearly loved…..why did he paid Debbie MILLIONS to be his wife & have kids for a 'lil while' and lived this weird reclusive lifestyle? Nobody would ever talk about it bc they all signed 'hush contracts'

    63. 163

      she is right

    64. 164

Re: ParalyZzzZzer – WE got back together. just a blip on the dating scheme. Also, i reposted the comment becuz i re read it and found that it had spelling mistakes. whoops. don't be mad

      165

She's on the mark, IMHO. Although I do love hearing that some hottie is on my team, it is rare that his career is what it might have been had he not come out. Rupert Everett's career, what career? It's either that he came out or his plastic surgeon fucked up BIGTIME.

Who knows, maybe the gay male fan base is large enough to keep the young heartthrobs in the limelight.

But, Joan is one smart lady; has a degree from Barnard and I know she is not talkingh with a homophobic slant.

    66. 166

I am gay… and I TOTALLY AGREE with her- Ricky Martin played it well. Shut UP Perez, not all of us gays think the way you do! Unfortunately, in this society coming out as a celebrity is harmful to your career and and creates too much stigma to live by. I agree with Joan Rivers- it is 2010 but unfortunately not much has changed ….

    67. 167

I love Joan but she made a valid point! Any women who has ever had fantasys about there favorite idol does not want to find out her hopefully future husband is into men just like her.

    68. 168

I agree with Joan. You can't come out of the closet in the current social climate. When people (especially women) watch a movie they are naturally attracted to the sexy, handsome movie star (ex. Brad Pitt or R. Pattinson). They want to be transported & be "swept away". If an actor comes out, it spoils the illusion. After all, movies are an illusion. It's not right, but it's the way things are nowadays. So they should stay in the closet if they want big careers. If not, resign themselves to character parts.

    69. 169

      Re: pauliewood
Coming out is personal. You must learn to live with this, period.

    70. 170

      She's 100% right!
No way RM would have gotten that much attention from WHO?…THE GIRLS!

Joan is a smart and wise old woman. Perez, U young and Stupid.

Sure, we all have the right to do as we please and make our own personal decisions…but, People still DO care [quiet as it's kept] when it comes to their idols and their dollars.

    71. 171

This is not antigay… sorry Perez. Her point is totally valid ESPECIALLY if you want to make a buck or two in Hollyweird. If a teen girl knows you're gay… she won't go as batshit crazy on you if she thinks you're not. This isn't about not being truthful. It's about the bottom line for the actor.

    72. 172

She's right… it's only like when straight pop stars and actors pretend they don't have girlfriends.. they need to seem 'available'.
It's just a question of numbers, there are more straight teenage girls than there are gay teenage boys, so to sell more records…..

    73. 173

if you're a flaming mo, don't let yourself be sold as a str8 heartthrob, what's the problem MARIONETTE? fuck off

    74. 174

I'm an out and gay man, i have been in the sydney mardi gras twice, volenteered once and marched for equal rights aswell… but perez stop being delusional.
i would love nothing more than for all the gay actors, singers or preformers to come out why they are in high demand rather than waiting until their career is over but unfortunatley that will never happen.
so much success of a movie is the actors in the movie (e.g twilight… why do you think girls more than guys are fans, HOT TOPSLESS GUYS)
All that joan was pointing out was the truth and it actually shows how IN TOUCH she is.
      Its sad but true

    75. 175

She is right to a point. however I don't think it's as straight forward as that. I don't think it's the stars so much who want to remain closeted I think it's more to do with the managers and publicists who advise them against coming out. I know for a FACT George Michael, gay as he is, and we ALL know he is gay by now, is STILL LOVED by women all over the world, he still get's their panties wet even though they know he is gay… so I think the truth is probably somewhere in the middle. The artists obviouly KNOW they are gay themselves and the people around them know, the artist would probably be happier if everyone knew and they could still have a career but the people around them don't want to take the risk because, with someone like George Michael there is major money to be made, HELLO!!! . But I honestly don't think anyone cares anymore, only bigots and they are not important.

    76. 176

Perez, you talk as though fame & fortune are some kind of god-given human right. If someone wants to be a teen idol or a mega heart-throb/leading man, then yes, they have to stay closeted.

To put it in terms you might understand, do you think there would be any Edward vs. Jacob debate if one of the actors was out as gay and the other wasn't? No. While teenage gays do make up some of that market the majority of it is straight girls. They want boys who only seem gay, because then they're non-threatening, but not actually gay because then it's harder for them to delude themselves that they might actually someday get with their favorite Bop magazine pin-up.

For someone who "works" in Hollywood, you have very little understand ing of how it actually works.

    77. 177

Sorry perez, but she's 100% right! She hasn't been working non-stop since the 1950s to have not learned anything. How could she be out of touch with todays Showbiz when she clearly still is a part of it!?

    78. 178

she is right and wise. Perez herself couldn't survive with only the gays, who are not even 10% of population in the world.
