Go Sarah Silverman!

The comedienne is voicing her support for the Healthy School Meals Act of 2010, which promotes nutritious lunches in America's schools.

In a letter to Congressman George Miller, Silverman writes:

"I'm writing to you about something that has shocked and offended me. And trust me when I say it takes a lot to shock and offend me. Some of the foods we're feeding kids in schools are repulsive - and that unhealthy food is feeding the childhood obesity epidemic. All kids - vegetarian or not - should have healthy options. I think that we forget the simple fact that what we put in our bodies directly affects our bodies. Many kids aren't able to bring lunches from home - they have to eat what's in the lunch line. Without healthful options in the cafeteria, we're doing our children and the future of our country a great disservice. If we help children develop healthy habits early on, they'll have a lower risk of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes in the future. And that would mean lower health care costs. See? Only good comes from this. I know you're as serious as I am about helping kids succeed and stay healthy."

Couldn't have said it better ourselves!

Good for her. More should be done. This is not just a problem in city schools either. I live in a very nice area, and they feed my kids dog crap for food. I actually feel really guilty when i don't make them lunch because i know it's chicken nugget day, or some shitty sloppy joe. It's really a disgrace.

    Whos Sarah Silverman?

  3. 3

I wonder if Gabourey Sidibe is doing the same? Nah, she's feeding on a large pizza, two Happy Meals, a hot fudge sundae and a large Diet Coke instead.

  4. 4

this girl… man she dresses like a complete hobo and goes around all messed up and looking dirty. Yet if she would just stop being such a tomboy, take care of herself a bit more, nicer clother, a bit of make up she would be really pretty if not beauful. She has very nice facial features and I remember her getting dressed up for some award show.. Very nice/hot. I know its comfy to be in some leisure clothes but this sh*t shes wearing is uuuugly.

  5. 5

What? Every other word from this woman's mouth is obscene, and we are supposed to take her seriously?

America is not a nanny state, and it doesn't need preaching to from a lame liberal do-gooder. And besides, who elected this azzhole to the Food Police Patrol?

Sarah should sit down, shut the f*ck up, and get a job.

  6. 6

It's a good start, but forget the "options" part, it should ALL be healthy. Get rid of the crap. It will never work if you give them a choice because they will choose the crap over the healthy food. Moms, you don't make 2 meals and home every night and let them choose which one they want, do you? No, you make what is good for them and the only choice they have is eat it or be hungry. At least that's what you do if you're a GOOD mom.

  7. 7

Just get Jamie Oliver in. He got our Brit kids off the Turkey Twizzlers I'm sure he can do the same for your little ones.

  8. 8

good, she should stick to that, cuz bitch is not funny in the least.

  9. 9

hope they don't cancel it like her other program

  10. 10

    i want to fuck her

  11. 11

Well said, Sarah! Children should be taught healthy eating habits at school, and they shouldn't be fed fast food junk everyday. They served little to no healthy options when I was in school.

  12. 12

Like you give a shit about any thing but your hate campaign FatBoy. What about unhealthy upskirt photos of school children FatAss?? Thats right Miley is still in school LardAss.

  13. 13

Why do the schools need to feed the kids at all? What's going on that the parents can't put a sandwich in a paper bag?

  14. 14

She is right. This is about America's children.

I agree, something needs to be done. BUT she even said it herself, health care cosrs will go down. Meaning the pharmaceutical companies won't be getting as much money.

Think about it. Most cases type 2 diabetes is caused by poor diet and/or weight. Doctors sometimes prescribe Metformin and other drugs to help with type 2 diabetes.

Get rid of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high blood pressure, and other obesity/diet related illnesses and doctors/insurance companies/pharm. companies won't be making nearly as much. So I really doubt the government is in a rush to do anything.

But like I said, I agree. It's really sad to see toddlers that weight sixty pounds because their parents won't instill healthy eating habits.

I went to a university in Canada and was shocked about the food. They've only had fucking McDonald's, Pizza and Tim Hortons. In Europe we have real chefs preparing fresh food every day and there's a salad bar in every cafeteria.

  18. 18

She should team up with Jamie Oliver.

  19. 19

    Re: Alasen
You are one of those people who don't like or maybe even make fun of people who don't look just like you, aren't you? People aren't sheep. People don't have to conform to YOUR idea of "beauty". I think she is absolutely beautiful the way she is. Actually, even more so because she doesn't fall victim to having to conform to people like you…

  20. 20

Finally, someone is doing something about these horrendous lunches in schools! I went to highschool in a wealthier suburb (even though my family wasn't wealthy), and even there the lunches were God awful! The lunches were so bad, I spent 4 years eating out of the vending machines! The only good lunches were chicken nugget day, and those were even veiny and rejected meat.

  21. 21

Re: Alasen – Who do you think you are? This isn't America's Next Top Model! I think she's a very pretty woman. And the thing I like most about her is she doesn't feel as though she has to dress to impress anyone. She's her own person…not a sheep like the rest of the glamazons. Maybe you should take a long look at yourself before you criticize a woman's appearance.

  22. 22

Re: DonnaWanda – Turkey twizzlers?? Haha that sounds really good right now!

  23. 23

I went to an amusement park the other day and could not believe all the little boys running around that had bigger tits than me!! It's truly disgusting and I felt like I wanted to rescue those children from there incredibly obese parents. It's like a form of child abuse…letting your kid get that fat. I'd be so embarrassed as a parents if my child's weight was that out of control. I'm so happy my brother and his wife don't let my niece and nephews eat what they want. They make them eat fruits and vegetables alongside meat dishes. And they're not even allowed to drink pop anymore.

  24. 24

As a lunch lady, I hear your concerns, we have them too. What you don’t realize is that we have to use what the government provides us with. Usually the lowest quality of meat and those damn chicken nuggets. If we were to make all these changes, which I agree are good, the price of lunch would go from about $1.10 to $5 a meal. This is because we would have to stop using the products from the USDA and use an outside vendor like Sysco….expensive. Then we have parents bitching about the cost. So we are damned if we do, damned if we don’t. Another thing, think about this: on average, with breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks, a child eats 35 meals a week. Of those 35 meals, only 5 are school lunches. It is up to the parents to feed their kids the other 30 but nope, it is the school’s lunch that makes them fat.

  25. 25

BTW, someone said that they ate out of vending machines for four years……shame on your parents. Shame on your school for having them available.

The person who said healthy eating should be taught in school…it should be taught at home, starting when the child first starts eating solids. Parents need to resonsible for their OWN child. It is up to parents to TEACH as well.

Some of the biggest advocates for healthier school meals are your lunch ladies. We even have lobbist in Washington fighting for healthier lunches. Believe me or not. I know that I'm half way to my degree in nutrition because I take my job so seriously. To me it isn't a just a job.

  26. 26

    Re: OldBroadinOH
You're a moron. The school doesn't feed them all for free. This is what available for 95% of kids to buy for lunch. So if people are willing to pay, why not offer good food. Pay for the sandwich or pay for the lunch. You still have to pay.

  27. 27

Is this because nobody cares about her actual career anymore?

  28. 28

"Without healthful options in the cafeteria"

    Healthful isn't even a word.

  29. 29

Re: BritBrit61384 – God no. Horrible reformed meat things. Kids in England can now only get healthy food; real mean real vegetables and no powdered mash potato of my school days. Jamie could teach you guys a thing or two.

  30. 30

  31. 31

    She's so right.
Most of the time, adults CAN control what kids eat. We are doing a terrible job and are setting kids up for poor health..including a lifetime of weight struggles.

  32. 32

    Umm… okay, random.

  33. 33

Wtf?! I call foul. She's disgusting, vile, and a stain on humanity. She's worse for children then school lunches.

  34. 34

I would like to fight to see her wearing a bag over her ugly head.

  35. 35

I am a teacher in an inner city school. And what Heidi 3thumbs is saying is correct, it's the government who is dictating what is being fed to the children. They consider
ketchup as being a vegetable serving. But the school lunches are better than what I have seen students bring to school for lunch - soda, chips, a bag of candy and cookies. This is not made up, it really happens.

  36. 36

shes so right these kids who are FAT HOGS now are the fat hog useless and depressed adults of the future if they make it that far…

also they should close down all the fast food joints that sell kids toys as getting into the subcounsious mind that its fun to overeat and should also stop soft drink dispensers in schools but they dont do that OUTTA GREED they are killing ur kids slowly one burger at a time……..

  37. 37

Re: heidi3thumbs – Don't ever talk about my parents you f*cking bitch!! If your parents were decent, you would have a higher education and not be a lunch lady!

  38. 38

she's boring as an advocate..she should go back to f*cking matt damon.

  39. 39

YOU GO SARAH!!! You make me proud. This is what will make you remember by children 30 years from know. Good for you !!!!!

  40. 40

TOO LITTLE, TOO VAGUE. Once again, the wording of this is TOO SOFT. If you only require that healthy 'options' be included… how many children do you think will choose the steamed vegetables over fast food type fare. Not many. Just as you wouldn't have a 'slackers' option in school - a huge homeroom where unmotivated students can go to skip out on class, you shouldn't be serving anything fatty or unhealthy in school cafeterias - as in no sodas, no fried foods, lots of fresh fruit, veggies, etc.

Pipe dream? Probably, but it's what SHOULD be done. It's just that we might actually have to FUND such radical healthfulness and… EEK! No one want to have to pay more…

So, keep it cheap (for us, in the short run) and keep feeding (cheap) CRAP to the kiddies - that way they will be unhealthy, unfocused, out-of-breath and fat. AND, that way we can keep buying all the ridiculous material things that make our adult lives so complete.

  41. 41

YOU WANT KIDS TO BE HEALTHY AND SUCCESSFUL?!!? HOW ABOUT NOT TEACHING THEM HOW TO BE WOMEN HATING, SELF LOATHING, JEALOUS INTERNET BULLIES LIKE YOURSELF MARIO! THAT WOULD BE A GOOD FIRST STEP FOR YOU!!!

  42. 42

Re: Alasen – SHE IS A COMEDIAN NOT A FASHION ICON! SHE DOESN'T HAVE TO BE SIZE 0 TO GET A MOVIE OR LOOK LIKE A STAR 24/7 AND NEITHER DOES ANYONE ELSE. LIVING UP TO THESE FALSE IDEALS OF WHAT A WOMEN SHOULD BE IS CONFINING AND NOT HEALTHY. GROW UP!

  43. 43

Re: DragonSlayer – OHHH, BECAUSE ITS SOOO HORRIBLE TO BE A "DO GOODER" MAN, I'D JUST HATE TO BE ONE OF "THOSE". DOING GOOD IS SO OVER-RATED! DO YOU KNOW HOW STUPID YOU SOUND ASSHOLE? I GUESS IT WOULD BE BETTER TO BE A HATEFUL DUMBASS WHO CARES ABOUT NO ONE AND IS A BITTER LITTLE BOY WITH THE IQ OF HIS DICK SIZE? YOU'RE THE ONE WHO IS OBSCENE, SO WHY DON'T YOU GET A LIFE BEYOND BEING A CONDESCENDING JERK?

  44. 44

Re: heidi3thumbs – YOU'RE SO RIGHT! AND THEY DON'T PAY YOU ENOUGH EITHER, I'M SURE OF IT! GET BETTER QUALITY FOODS, TEACH THE COOKS TO COOK HEALTHIER THROUGH BETTER TRAINING (I'M SURE YA'LL ARE MORE THAN QUALIFIED, PROBABLY OVER-QUALIFIED, THANK YOU FOR WHAT YOU DO!) AND MAKE TO FOOD KIDS WANT TO EAT AS WELL, THEY ACTUALLY ENJOY FRESH FRUIT AND VEGGIES GIVEN THE CHOICE! MINE DO AT LEAST!

  45. 45

Re: mariannelee – MINE WOULD CHOOSE STEAM VEGGIES BECAUSE THAT IS WHAT WE OFFER AT HOME AND THEY LIKE IT! I KNOW YOU WERE BEING SARCASTIC BUT ITS REALLY SAD THE DEFEATIST ATTITUDES OUT THERE. THIS IS SOMETHING THAT CAN BE DONE. BUT YES, WITH IMPROVED FOOD WOULD COME MORE COST, THUS MORE FREE LUNCHES, PUTTING IT ONTO THE GOV'T AND WE ALL KNOW THAT THEY ARE CHEAP ASSES WHO ONLY CARE ABOUT CORPORATIONS. WELL, MAYBE ONE OF THEM CAN START A HEALTH FOOD CORPORATION AND MAKE MONEY OFF OF OUR KIDS BEING HEALTHY AND NOT OFF OF THEM BEING FAT!!!

  46. 46

    Well said.

  47. 47

sounds like robin has gotten to her.

  48. 48

LOL… a "healthy option" won't do crap. We always had prepared salads that you could buy at my junior high and high school. Everyone went for the chicken nuggets, pizzas, etc. No kid wants to eat a fuc*ing salad or vegetables. I could only see this working if they did away with the whole lunch system in school and made all of the children bring their lunches. Or just offer healthy food. Thats not going to happen anytime soon. America will get fatter and fatter until every last american is morbidly obese. We will all be riding around on those electronic scooter things instead of walking wherever we go. We will all be giving each other shots of insulin while taking our pills for our bad hearts and high cholestoral. There will just be big and tall stores to shop at and we will all just wear gowns and mo-mo's. We won't have necks anymore and we will all carry sweat rags around with us.

  49. 49

I'm so glad to see S. Silverman drawing attention to the issue. The better food movement and the school food movement, in particular, are growing stronger by the day! Some celebrity attention is always a positive thing.

It is because of our very broken food system, our rampant obesity problem and our healthcare conundrum that we MUST change the way we eat in all areas of our lives. Education is key to any societal change. We must teach about nutrition and present healthy foods in schools.

    Loverly!
