Darth Drives Miss Daisy Around Midtown

This fall, Tony Award-winners and Broadway vets James Earl Jones and Vanessa Redgrave are heading back to the Great White Way!

The pair will co-star in the Broadway premiere of Driving Miss Daisy at the John Golden Theatre. The story of an elderly widow whose son hires her an African-American man to serve as her chauffeur is best known for it's award-winning film version, but with such massive talent in the stage production, we wager we have next year's Tony winner for best play!

Thoughts?

First of all, JEJ needs to lose that HIDEOUS moustache! He's scarey looking! Second of all, of course, both stars are brilliant, legendary actors (like their film counterparts were) but I'm just not that comfortable with the whole "black servant, white boss" thing. Hey, I'm a kid of the sixties and that's probably where this comes from.

Perez: Aren't you a fan of the Tony's? Then you should know that only NEW plays can be nominated for Best Play. A re-staging of DMD would instead be eligible for Best REVIVAL of a Play.

"…we wager we have next year's Tony winner for best play!"

Impossible! It wouldn't be eligible for Best Play.

It would, however, be eligible for Best Revival of a Play.

Your lack of theatre knowledge is disconcerting. Whenever you "cover" New York theatre you're posts are always filled with inaccuracies.

Awesome pairing, but JEJ is a little Darth Vader for Heck, yanno?

I would love to see it - as Lillibunny said - simply because I would like to see how Jones could downplay his downright Mufasa-ness in order to come off as a convincing servant.

    Re: Go_Ask_Alice
Be careful, Alice. It's actually YOUR lack of theater knowledge that's showing.

Since Driving Miss Daisy has never been produced on Broadway, it will indeed be eligible in the Best Play category. Best Revival of a Play applies only to plays that have been on Broadway before.
