Grey Gardens Diary Set To Be Published!

We cannot wait to read this!

The childhood diary of Edith "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale is set to be published!

As most know, she and her mother "Big Edie" became infamous for living like recluses in their Hamptons home, as documented by the 1976 film Grey Gardens. Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange portrayed them in the recent HBO program of the same name.

The diary, called I Only Mark The Hours That Shine, was apparently written in 1929 when Little Edie was only 11.

We wonder how much delusional glamour and crazy was bubbling underneath the surface, even back then!

What do U think?? Would be interested in reading Little Edie's diary??

I would be more interested in reading a diary of "Little Edie" when she was older. A diary of a child does not interest me.

    Reece Witherspoon?

    sure…why not?

I was facinated with both Edie's when I saw the documentry about them. Then when the movie came out I was blown away by the spot on portrail by Drew Berrymore and Jessica Lang. I will probably read this book. I'll get it used on Amazone but I'll read it.

The original documentary Grey Gardens directed by the Mayslay's brother's is genius!

the Reese Witherspoon/Drew Berrymore film is a joke. These two mediocre actresses try to portray two very complex, very REAL women (big & little Edie). And my question is, if you are interested in Grey Gardens why not just watch the real life documentary instead of these two wack-tresses doing a shitty job portraying them.

Sorry, I just really love the original Grey Gardens and I don't think anything in the world of filmmaking can compare to it. It's an amazing film that celebrates the outcasts of society. It celebrates 2 awesomely insane women who make you laugh and cry at the same time.

As a side note, Big and Little Edie are related to Jackie Kennedy. They were well known in the upper crust of society and they were a bit of a bit media fixation in the 50's and 60's because of the fact that they lived in squalor. But they knew some very important people and they discuss them in intimate detail.

    Seriously watch it.

YES! I think this will be fascinating and can not wait to read it! I always sensed a bit of tragedy under Edie's somewhat grandiose speeches and eccentric behavior. She WAS TRULY talented I think but lacked the proper encouragement and nurturing upbringing. Talent without a healthy outlet turns into painfully limiting narcissism. I mean I know she did some poetry in her earlier years but I think she suffered from extremely low self esteem. Ironically!

    awesome!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I would love to read it. Absolutely

OMG I'm countin the frickin minutes unitl this comes out!

As much as I adored the original documentary I highly doubt 11 year old Edie's diary would shed any light on her personality or disorders. I mean we are not ta;king the diaries of Anne Frank here.

Re: FemaleFilmMajor – Uhhhh, you lost me at Reese Witherspoon who WAS NOT in the film.
    Nice try "Film Major"

When I saw the movie, I was blown away by Drew and Jessica. I became obsessed and I saw the original documentaries. Though similar, I watched them all anyway. Drew really did an awesome job. She is an amazing actress.

  17. 17

DUH! I CAN'T WAIT. WHO DOESN'T WANT TO READ THE DIARY OF AN ELEVEN YEAR OLD GIRL?

  18. 18

I Loved the original documentaries and the work by Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange was awesome, too!!! This tore at my heart so much that I would love to know more about Little Edie on any level because she was such a beautiful Soul. I look forward to it!!! When I watched it, I was so sorry that more couldn't be done for Little Edie so that all her dreams could come true!!! I hope that she's at peace, in Love and doing everything she loves!!!

  19. 19

Yes, I would be interested. Much more interesting than all the Twilight crap teenagers are raving about.

  20. 20

I'm very interested! I hope that you keep us updated with the release of this book!

Grey Gardens, the original documentary in l975 was brilliant with Edith Bouvier Beale (80) and her middle-aged daughter Edie. Edie was dry and quick-witted. The diary should be incredible. For those who haven't seen the original documentary its profoundly brilliant.

…..Poindexter X says he wouldn't be interested in a diary written by an ll year old…ever hear of Anne Frank?

  23. 23

    Re: backfire

Of course I know who Anne Frank is. I should have been more specific in my post. The diary of 11 year old Edie would most likely not interest me. Ms. Frank's circumstances were much different. Poor girl. I do agree that the 1975 documentary "Grey Gardens" is excellent. I own the Criterion release. :)

I'm a big fan of the original documentary and was astounded by the movie. The diary?? I dunno. Maybe. I'd really like to see the collection from the house that was restored by Sally Quinn. I think someday the house will be a museum.

  25. 25

    Who? And who cares?

  26. 26

    Yes I would:)

  27. 27

Re: nezzia – Thank you, glad I wasn't the only one to catch that…

  28. 28

I've watched the original "Grey Gardens" a few times, and I could easily enjoy watching it several times more! They were very interesting and charming ladies, but not unlike many women who are alive and even well-known today, such as all of the "Housewives" cast!

    A definite summer read.
