Ouch! Cleveland Cavaliers Owner Sticks It To LeBron

Now that LeBron James announced that he is moving to the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert wrote an open letter to fans.

And he rips LeBron a new one!

He wrote:

Dear Cleveland, All Of Northeast Ohio and Cleveland Cavaliers Supporters Wherever You May Be Tonight;

As you now know, our former hero, who grew up in the very region that he deserted this evening, is no longer a Cleveland Cavalier.

This was announced with a several day, narcissistic, self-promotional build-up culminating with a national TV special of his "decision" unlike anything ever "witnessed" in the history of sports and probably the history of entertainment.

Clearly, this is bitterly disappointing to all of us.

The good news is that the ownership team and the rest of the hard-working, loyal, and driven staff over here at your hometown Cavaliers have not betrayed you nor NEVER will betray you.

There is so much more to tell you about the events of the recent past and our more than exciting future. Over the next several days and weeks, we will be communicating much of that to you.

You simply don't deserve this kind of cowardly betrayal. You have given so much and deserve so much more.

In the meantime, I want to make one statement to you tonight:

"I PERSONALLY GUARANTEE THAT THE CLEVELAND CAVALIERS WILL WIN AN NBA CHAMPIONSHIP BEFORE THE SELF-TITLED FORMER ‘KING’ WINS ONE"

You can take it to the bank.

If you thought we were motivated before tonight to bring the hardware to Cleveland, I can tell you that this shameful display of selfishness and betrayal by one of our very own has shifted our "motivation" to previously unknown and previously never experienced levels.

Some people think they should go to heaven but NOT have to die to get there. Sorry, but that's simply not how it works.

This shocking act of disloyalty from our home grown "chosen one" sends the exact opposite lesson of what we would want our children to learn. And "who" we would want them to grow-up to become.

But the good news is that this heartless and callous action can only serve as the antidote to the so-called "curse" on Cleveland, Ohio.

The self-declared former "King" will be taking the "curse" with him down south. And until he does "right" by Cleveland and Ohio, James (and the town where he plays) will unfortunately own this dreaded spell and bad karma.

Just watch. Sleep well, Cleveland. Tomorrow is a new and much brighter day….

I PROMISE you that our energy, focus, capital, knowledge and experience will be directed at one thing and one thing only: DELIVERING YOU the championship you have long deserved and is long overdue….

Yikes!

    Goodbye forever.

  2. 2

It's like a bloke who's been dumped and he's trying to convince himself he's fine.

  3. 3

    THIS IS THE END!

  4. 4

Yikes. Its his life and he can do what he wants. Also why can't he make more money, big tax break. Maybe he left because of management. If the letter represents anything about who they are I would leave too!

  5. 5

Dan Gilbert needs to get over himself and just let it go. Lebron was going nowhere with his former team so it was time for him to move elsewhere.

    Brilliant letter. Goodbye forever!

  8. 8

bit overly fucking dramatic, dontchya think?

  9. 9

I don't understand the comment about how "some people think you should go to heaven but not have to die to get there." Don't get me wrong, I found LeBron James's disgusting self-promotion/self-indulgence campaign sickening, but how does this statement apply to LeBron James? Can someone help me out?

  10. 10

Screw Labron, his legacy is dead now. He'll always be the guy that couldn't win it at home and had to leave and get help. Loser.

  11. 11

    hell ya

  12. 12

I am from Ohio and i am not up set he left we are bad at sports i mean it we choke any time we get close to thing! I hope him well and my home team to but he has to do what he thinks is best for HIM not OHIO!

  13. 13

oh stfu! it's not lebrons responsibility to carry a team, which he has, under an org tht hasn't given him any help. why shud he hafta stay there nd lose th game he loves jus bcuz he was born there? stop crying nd GO HEAT TH FUCKING DREAM TEAMMM

Its probably better if Hilton stays out of sports and politics and sticks to playing with dolls and dress-up

    15

Ouch. Sounds a little like sour grapes now. I mean, honestly! I can understand being upset, but wishing curses on him and making predictions? Good luck with that. I feel awful for the fans in Cleveland, though.

  16. 16

    STHU GIlbert don't be hater

  17. 17

Apparently Ari Emmanuel was the "genius" behind THE DECISION, a show devoted to LeBron's big choice, all in the name of….charity. What a joke.

  18. 18

That show he put on last night was sick, he is just another self centered douch bag athlete…..

  19. 19

First of all to "DOOMED", One player doesn't win games. Look at kobe hes surrounded by good players. Who did Lebron have mo williams?…… Shaq?. Shaq hasnt been good since the 90's and mo williams avg. like 8 points a game in the playoffs. Lebron was that team. There was noone else. And to Dan Gilbert, hes just realizing that he has noone on his team to win so he had to send out this ridiculous letter. Hes shitting in his pants and this letter was the only thing that he thought would make his pain go away until he realizes that hes playerless.

  20. 20

He was with the team 7 years so he gave it his all. But…that ridiculous 'touring' and then that dopey special with that idiot Jim
Grey (a pariah to me!)? Nooooo, no class. And being with Miami is
n-o-t an automatic guarantee of success!

  21. 21

Obviously the owner did not run this buy anyone with brains or they would have told him how completely unprofessional and childish he sounded.

  22. 22

Straight guys think that this stuff is IMPORTANT when it's only a group of boys who refuse to grow up thinking that a game involving putting a ball in a hoop is somehow represents the best of humanity when it only models the worst: greed, ego, aggression and entitlement.

    Pro-athletes = rapists, steroid-users, felons and cheaters.

  23. 23

"The Decision" should've been called "The Mistake"

  24. 24

Wow - what a righteous rant. I don't follow sports at all, but this is hysterical. I hope the Cavs do win the championship. Now that they don't have to pay this guy $37M or however much it was they can probably hire a few more good players.

  25. 25

Moron, he sounds like a bitter ex-NBA wife!
As a mother of a 15 yr old high school basketball player that looks up to these men (mainly Kobe YUCK). I commend LeBron and Wade… those are the 2 young men I want my child looking up to! That TV special raised money for the B & G clubs. I want to see the fans show up at his door step burning Jerseys and such when he can't fulfill all of his promises and guarantees.

  26. chewi says – reply to this

    26

How lame…this is an owner of an NBA team who should know to show a little more class and professionalism - instead he acts like a big fucking whiny baby. I bet LeBron is glad he left.

  27. 27

Re: Batgirlbeyond – I coud'nt have said it better. You hit the nail on the head…….

  28. 28

lol he's just bitter that their best player left. lmao watch lebron win with them before they do, and he eats his useless words with his useless team.

  29. 29

Wow, is he gonna cry?! Theres no crying in Basketball! And to quote a chick flick on top of it! LOL Wow.
Players get traded all the time, you dont see them crying about it, so this guy traded you, get over it!

  30. 30

HE DESERVES IT! HES A DOUCHBAG FOR LEAVING THE WAY HE DID! HE HUMILIATED CLEVELAND FANS EVERYWHERE! SHAME ON HIM!!! HOW COULD HE DO THAT TOO SOO MANY PEOPLE WHO HAVE MADE HIM WHO HE IS. I PRAY TO THE GOOD LORD THAT THE CAVS BRING A TITLE HOME B4 THIS SCUM BAG

  31. 31

Am I the only one who could give a shit less which team Lebron chose?

  32. 32

Another copy and paste Mario well done, you know nothing about Sports or anything related to it so stop pretending you sound so lame

  33. 33

I don't get this whole thing. He was with the Cavs for SEVEN years & never once did they win a championship! They only made the finals ONCE & lost to the Spurs in a sweep! His time with the Cavs had run it's course! Then people talk that he's looking for an easy championship win, if that were true, he would've picked the LAKERS & he didn't. IMO, he's about the game, not the win. He understands that it's a TEAM that wins championships, not ONE player which is what the Cavs seem to think. The owner is just butt hurt because he got his ass dumped. Get over it!! If you wanted him that bad you would've tried to settle this crap way before LeBron even had the chance to think about where he wanted to go!! But did you? Nope! Now you're kicking yourself in the ass! Oh well! You snooze, you lose!!

  34. 34

He's the most hated person in sports right now. His arrogance and me-first attitude reminds me of you and should show you what you mean to the public douchebag. Every adjective used in this story applies to you. Fuck James and you.

  35. 35

Yeah, cause he is not good enough to elevate his team to win.

  36. 36

Wow, that totally sounds like some angry sports fan writing in a blog instead of a professional owner. Good call with that letter douche bag

  37. 37

You made the right choise for ur self.Whatever you do seems good 2 u is good 4 me but watch ur self because some cavs fans might do something very stupid

  38. 38

Haha just a tad bit overly dramatic! He wasn't doing any good over there, so its a personal choice to move…"WELCOME TO THE MAGIC CITY BABY!! GO HEAT!"

  39. 39

damn, ppl in Cleveland are acting like the man just murdered all the first-born sons.

get the fuck over it people, he's a grown as man with a lot of bargaining power, he can play where the fuck he wants.

and for pete's sake, it's just basketball. calm the fuck down!

  40. 40

Pffft that's hilarious. Why can't he do what he wants? Clearly he believes he'll be happier on another team. Keep your panties on, there are far worse "heartless" actions out there.

  41. 41

Disgusting! He such a classless prick. I mean the condescending attitude. Lebron was the best thing to happen to the Cavaliers and this owner shows a lack of appreciation for the bushels of cash he made off of him.

He gave them 7 years and they couldn't provide the support he needed to even have a championship contending team.

For shame Cleveland if your state is filled with such an ungrateful idiot as this owner Lebron can only be faulted for staying as long as he did.

  42. 42

Coming from someone who is actually from Cleveland… This ego that everyone is complaining about. Yes, it exists… because of the Cleveland fans. When you're 25 and have people worshiping the ground you walk on and throwing up building sized banners that say "I am a witness", how could you not get somewhat of an ego.
Honestly, I'm surprised he stayed as long as he did. I don't see him leaving as a "betrayal", maybe he wants to test the waters… And play for a team that he doesn't have to carry.

  43. 43

Lebron was a douche to Gilbert. Although, the letter could have been toned down.

  44. 44

Speaking as a life long native Clevelander, we treated this man like a GOD. Even back when he was at St. Vincent/St. Mary. This town has a terrible reputation and an even worse economy. He brought hope to the people of Cleveland. He could have been a hero to the people who took a chance on him but no, he needed more money. He can honestly go screw himself. Cleveland fans are die hard and he'll never live this down.

OH YEAH. And he just built a huge $25 million mansion in Akron. Guess that meant nothing.

  45. 45

Gilbert sounds like a real Punk with what he said. It's Professinal Sports, players come and go all the time. As good as James is for all you know his best years could of been in Cleveland. Time will tell. Gte over it!!!!

  46. 46

Can you blaime the guy? Who the hell wants to stay in Cleveland? The armpit of America, the wasteland of all that's gone wrong in this country..I'd take a big pay cut to stake up a home in MIAMI BABY!

  47. 47

    Re: katieishollywood
Ok, are you talking about LeBron or Gilbert? Keep in mind, for all his phony posturing, Gilbert's from MICHIGAN! He aint from Ohio. Think he cares? Watch him pull an Art Model and take the Cavs someplace else at the first sign of a better tax deal! A tax free built court! And they say Mark Cuban has no class. At least his teams won a few championships! Mark it down, first sweet tax-free deal with profits to ownership, just watch what Gilbert does!
That's life. In US lebron has the right to play wherever he wants.
Gilbert = Motherfuckin' Ass Clown. Totally.

  48. 48

while I am not a Lebron fan, slavery was abolished, he is a free man to live his life as he wishes, its a game that is played to win championships. he took the path that he felt would get him there. Good 4 him, the COWARDS are you nay sayers.. so you would stay at the $5.85 an hr job you got at 17 for the rest of your life because you a loyal? BS you are a LIAR & A Fraud

  49. Niobe says – reply to this

    49

While I agree with most of you, LeBron has to do what is best for him, I do not agree with his pompous display of self worth! All the time that it took him to give his official announcement, all the display of grandeur?!! WTF? He had to get his own show to announce it…..can someone say bloated ego? I mean I am not taking away his accomplishments, but humility will get you a lot further in life, I just think his callousness about the whole process and taking his sweet time to make an announcement is what has so many pissed off. it's like the president of a nation calling a conference to relay some great (or bad) news! He plays basketball people! at the end of the day he is making a shit load of money, anyway, so I don't care WTF he does with it. There are people here in NY that are soooo upset that he didn't come here, I say F@@k it! He thinks he's too good for my city, he can go where he needs to.

  50. 50

Re: ricccii – Lebron. He's an ass pure and simple.

  51. 51

Re: perezfever101 – Except in the playoffs he threw the game away. What are you even talking about $5.85?

  52. 52

Re: Niobe – Thank you! He has a tattoo that says "God's chosen one". If that's not arrogance I don't know what is.

  53. 53

Well I live near Cleveland and all I have to say is most of the talk says two things…sure he is free to go, but it was the WAY he did it. Right from his last time on the court here and up until last night.

    We don't care anymore.

As for the letter, it was not professional but it came from the heart. Something Lebron lacks these days.

  54. 54

I hate lebron with a passion…but he had to do what he had to do. He was pretty much carrying the team. On that note, Lebron is the biggest douche ever and just because he knows hes good he acts like an ass. fuck him. and the owner is acting wayyy to unprofessional. Not going to lie though…the heat are going to be good.

  55. 55

good lord. he's a professional athlete, they change teams sometimes!

  56. 56

Re: WWDDD? – hes trying to say that he has to lose b4 he can win… it has to suffer b4 he gets that championship! So he wants a championshp without suffering the losses first like every other great. Which is true… Lebron is a asshole

  57. 57

Re: CeeCee – How is he an asshole? He HAS suffered! SEVEN YEARS of suffering! I don't blame him for going somewhere else where he can actually be part of an actual team instead of carrying the whole team like he did in Cleveland.

  58. 58

    Que "curse" ni curse?

Eso se quita bien rapidito con una limpieza… A couple of coconuts, some shells, colonia and some holy water will clear that up quick!!!

WELCOME Lebron and HAPPY LEBRONICA!! Let us wash that gray right out of your hair!

  59. 59

WOW!!!! Bitter much? What a cry baby….They trade players all the time and none of them cry like this….DAMN!!

  60. 60

Re: the realest – I totally agree with you!!! That is exactly the point that this coach needs to understand along with the rest of the organization and the fans. FFS, there are people burning his jersey over this!!!

  61. 61

WHY the fuck are people on LeBron about his "narcissistic" "self-promotional" blah blah blah campaign? If people weren't up his fucking ass about it, there wouldn't have been this national craze. Are you fucking serious? And stop calling him"King"…you're adding fuel to the fucking fire retards. And what the hell is up with the notion of "desertion???" Really??? Just b/c he's fucking from there, he doesn't owe anyone one thing! Its his fucking JOB! He can make whatever move he fucking wants.

And honestly, I could give a shit less about where he is b/c I don't watch basketball, but why r people ragging on him now? SHUT UP!

  62. 62

And who is the loser saying he is an ass for doing this to Cleveland fans?? Are you on drugs? Its BASKETBALL! WTF….no bearing over life or well-being.

  63. 63

I lived my whole life in Cleveland up till age 36 and I can imagine how the town is taking this. They must feel like it's one more kick to the already down and out city. I personally loathe sports so I want to say… you still have "Hot in Cleveland"!! :)

  64. 64

First of all, everyone who says the Cavaliers organization did nothing to support LeBron in his quest for a ring is obviously not from Cleveland. Since LeBron came to Cleveland, he had a huge role in choosing the players we signed and in building the team that HE wanted. So if his supporting cast was not what he wanted, that was largely his own doing.

Secondly, Cleveland is an awesome place to live, whether LeBron James is here or not. Those who view it as "the armpit of America" have never been here, or they would know how stupid that statement is. People here are very friendly, unlike in most big cities, and we have tons of stuff to do. We have a world-class orchestra, wonderful museums, superb restaurants, one of the most famous jazz clubs in the country, and a bazillion other great things. And the best part is, everything is cheaper here! Also, here's a little trivia: Cleveland was the first city in the world to have streetlights, ever! I'm glad people don't know how great Cleveland is, or else everyone would be moving here and it would be ruined!

Lastly, I will say that Queen James is an egotistical, disloyal bitch. But, he knows he can't carry a team, so I guess it is better for him to ride on King D-Wade's shoulders all the way to the NBA finals.

  65. 65

i am from cleveland ohio…and i think the only people who should comment and even have an opinion on this subject is infact people from cleveland. the rest of the world doesn't know what it's like to be a clevelander. he embarassed the whole city by doing that tv special. he has no respect. he did this for his own fame and honestly that is disgusting. i love dan gilbert and this letter is exactly what clevlenad fans needed to hear! so shut up all you haters!

  66. 66

Re: WWDDD? – This means that he's taking the easy way out, thinking that if he joins two superstars, he's automatically going to win a championship.

Posters 65 and 66 are completely right. Everyone saying we need to suck it up clearly don't understand the whole situation. The Cavs organization gave LeBron everything. They got him the players he wanted, let his friends and family do whatever they want and let them travel with the team. Hell, they even hired some of his friends to be player liaisons or some shit like that. What does he do? Kick us in the nuts on national television. LeBron is a dick and a traitor and I hope he never wins shit.

  67. 67

Hey Gilbert, fuck you. Don't act so self righteous. You made your money off this guy and now its time to go back to being ignored by the sports media. Maybe you should have brought in some talent to surround "the king"…but you didn't. You kept the tall ass Powder looking dude and some dipshit with neck tattoos and no jump shot. And now you act like you didn't know this was gonna happen. Like you didn't get the memo?

  68. 68

    Re: tokidork
Go burn a fucking couch asshole. The NBA colludes on all these free agency signings. NBA attendance and revenue is down and they are done with your market and moving on to Miami (any guess as to why?). Who gives a shit what your franchise gave him…he doesn't owe you or the Cavaliers anything. He made money and the franchise was relevant for 5 minutes. Ask your owner about his fat wallet during the last 7 years. It is an even trade and Gilbert knows it. Now they can suck again and draft a lottery pick and ride his ass for a few years. Beeeatch!

  69. 69

good grief. it's just business. it's just basketball. CCCAAAAAALLLM DDDOOOOWN.

  71. 71

    Re: feel_the_darkness

Thanks for that lovely comment! I didn't say he owed us shit. Pretty much the only reason why everyone's pissed is because of the way he announced he was leaving. The nicer thing to do would have been to let the organization know a little sooner. "Hey, this isn't working anymore. I'm gonna sign somewhere else." Instead, he felt the need to drag this thing out and wait until the last possible minute to officially state his intentions. And on national television. This left the Cavs virtually no time to try and sign free agents. Plus, if he would have done this quietly, Gilbert (probably) wouldn't have written that letter, which will most definitely scare off any potential future free agents/players. I'm not saying what Gilbert did was right…it's just that we have been screwed. Royally.

  72. 72

This guy is sorry his meal ticket is gone. I dont think the owner ever cared about winning a championship in Cleveland, he was making money hand over fist with James there as the draw. James wants a chance to win an NBA ring. This guy is a selfish jerkwad, pretty funny hes calling lebron selfish. Im not a lebron james fan, but everyone deserves a chance to improve themselves.

  73. 73

This man has no right to throw around the terms "disloyalty," "selfishness" and "betrayal," as the guy who tried to steal Tom Izzo away from his own alma mater, just as Michigan State was poised to win a national Championship this year. Dan Gilbert can suck it!
