Batman Director Won't Recast Heath Ledger's Joker

Good man. Heath Ledger made that role. In honor of his memory, it's better to let it stay his role.

Director Christopher Nolan has announced that the Joker will not be reappearing in the next Batman movie.

In a recent interview, Nolan decided not to divulge which villain or villains would be appearing in Batman 3, which is due out next July 2012. But, he insisted that for him, Heath was the "definitive" Joker and that it wouldn't be appropriate to recast.

We totally agree. Time to get some new villains anyway. There is such a magnitude to choose from anyway.

Any villain U'd like to see in the next movie?

    Egghead!

  2. 2

Wow, you're WAY late on this. A day late and a dollar short, Perez, as usual.

  3. 3

Good call hard to see anyone else doing that part…as for a new villain I'd like to see Batman beat the hell out of Pervez a modern day pedo villain who lusts after underage & barely legal boys…

  4. 4

    Voldemort.

  5. 5

No one even thought about that so I think these news are stupid.

  6. 6

So no one will ever play the Joker again because Heath Ledger did such a great job then died? Please explain to me how this is a great thing.

  7. 7

    Mr. Freeze and The Riddler!

  8. 8

heath ledger "made that role??" he may have been excellent, but Jack Nicholson was the joker way before heath was!

  9. 9

I enjoyed Heath's joker, but I still prefer Nicholson's more.

  10. 10

No offense to Heath Ledger, or anything, but he didn't "make" the joker role. He just got cast as the joker and then had the misfortune of dying while it was one of his leading roles that would made into more than one movie.

    Re: Nothing333
I want it explained to me too.

    Re: robynnn06Re: littlemichelley
    Agreed with both of you.

  12. 12

He made a good call. But I would love to see a Batman Movie with Harley Quinn and Poison Ivy as the main antagonists. As for who to play them, well that redhead chick from Mad Men looks like Poison Ivy so maybe her. Harley Quinn would be best played by a younger, more childish Helena Bonham Carter type. They'd have to be pretty charismatic though.

  13. 13

    awwe:(

  14. 14

it has to be joey gordon-levitt as riddler

  15. 15

    *

    BULLSHIT!

    *

First of all, he didn't make the role. Others before him, not the least of which was the great Jack Nicholson, worked that role as good if not better than Ledger.

    *

The Joker was a integral character in the Batman story from way back, long before Heath was born.

    *

The Joker is nobody's own role. The Joker owns the actor, not the other way around.

  16. 16

    ANy of them!

  17. 17

Good decision!! Heath was the king!

  18. 18

    PENGUIN

  19. 19

    CATWOMAN PLEASE!!

  20. 20

I cant believe this, i am not a happy bunny at all.
Okay yes i get it he made a good joker! but common, jus cos he has passed (and i was sad) he needs to get another one.
they arent gonna be as good.
BUT!! We need to get Harley Quinn in at least one batman film.
She is part of the batman comics and she needs to be in a film!!!

And well.. you cant introduce Harley Quinn without the joker!
GET HARLEY QUINN IN A BATMAN FILM!!!!

  21. 21

PENGUIN!!! I really like Mr.Freeze, but no one could replace ARNOLD!!!

  22. 22

Cesar Romero originally made the role. Oddly enough, he was a gay male of Cuban ancestry. But what would this cretinous vulgar blogger know about that?

  23. 23

phillip seymour hoffman as penguin, dita von teese as poison ivy, reese witherspoon as harley quinn and johnny depp as riddler. rip heath.

  24. 24

Joseph Gordon Levitt as the Riddler. Cillian Murphy as Scarecrow. Bring in some FEMALES finally!!!!

  25. 25

I was going to say I would like to see Poison Ivy make a return in this movie, but now that someone else suggested Voldemort… well I just need to run with that.

  26. 26

No shit, this news is two years old. In interviews during the release of the Dark Knight Nolan said he wouldn't recast the role. It's been widely known for a few months now that Levitt is in consideration for the Riddler.

  27. 27

Two-Face is probably going to be in the next one.

  28. 28

Good descion. No one could live up to Heath Ledger's joker

  29. 29

Good man, smart move. The past 2 years I've been telling all my friends it wasn't gonna happen, no one believed me. I'm really happy, Heath did an incredible job on this character, and no one would ever be able to compare. Many of Heath's true fans would have been very upset to see him replaced. Thanks Chris Nolan!! :)

  30. 30

I don't think anyone could play Joker like him, but I would love to see Joker wreck more havoc.

  31. 31

Julian Moore as poison ivy! would be awsome!

  32. 32

I would love to see Sarah Michelle Gellar play Harleen Quinzel / Harley Quinn

  33. 33

    There Pushin it OverBoard Perez?????
Heath Ledger was a good version of the Mobster Joker but there are so many dynamics to the character itself and there have been so many actors 2 play the role before heath? The Next Joker should be Ready4This DrumRole Pleaz
    JOHNNY DEPP!!!

  34. 34

….can anyone tell me what happened to the Joker at the end of the movie???…we know what happened to Two-Face but what about Joker?…major plot fail….

  35. 35

Please no Penguin or Riddler, PLEASE!!!!!

  36. 36

IM SO EXCITED FOR THE NEXT FILM!! Totally agree that was his role he made it complertly his own. Was terrifingly awesome. I hope they go original again an getr good actors who can bring as much as Chritian Bale does to his roles hard too see him on the screen with some toobit actor or actress like the cast from lame gossip girl or 90210!! need some serious actors.

  37. 37

Harley Quinn, the jokers "girlfriend"….I love her!!!

  38. @v@ says – reply to this

    38

Cesar Romero was the true original joker in the batman series, and then Jack Nicholson (top that) in the movie role. I know people miss their Heath, but the man died of a drug overdose, didn't he? I guess a little time between his joker and the next wouldn't hurt anything, but don't deify the man.

  39. 39

If she was a bit older I would say Dakota Fanning as Harley Quinn. And the character of the Joker belongs to the creator, not to any actor.

  40. 40

Oh, you are really not fans and in the loop at all.

So Good luck with your ridiculous speculations here.

Glad we have a separate fan base and websites with real connections and information.

  41. 41

    Harley QUINN!!!!!

  42. 42

Re: wysthud – Didn't two-face die at the end of the last movie?!?!?!?

  43. 43

Good. Wonder if they will explain his absence in the new movie? Doubt I will see it.

  44. 44

"Hush" will be the next batman movie villain. You heard it here first.

  45. 45

Well by no means am i a professional
but i pretty much told everyone i know in real life that ledger would be amazing for this role
and he was good…..so its awesome that nobody will try it

  46. 46

Emily Blunt as Catwoman and Crispin Glover as the Riddler!

  47. 47

Johnny Depp at the Riddler…now that would be SICK

  48. 48

Mark Hamill would make an excellent Joker. He's been voice acting the role for years, including the recent Arkham Asylum games. To many Batman enthusiast Mr. Hamill is one of the definitive Jokers if not the most definitive, but I guess that just a nerd thing.

  49. 49

Re: BLUZULU – Crispin Glover as the Riddler - I like that. He might be able to do justice to Frank Gorshin's iconic portrayal. Jim Carrey was adequate but not great.

  50. 50

You are a day behind on this one. But I did not know this was such an issue. Why would they have the same main villain 2 movies in a row! That would get boring and there are other villains that are interesting.

  51. 51

POISON IVY!!!!!!!!!!!!!! AND Harley Quinn too!!!! PLEASE!

  52. 52

This story is SOOOOOOO OLD! C'mon Perez- admit you get your "News" from other sites & move on. This story was even in the print news before!!!! UGH

  53. 53

Well who could do it better than Heath? A classic role, done to perfection.

  54. 54

It's getting boring the way people keep saying Perez is late with the news. Some of us are seeing this news for the first time when we come to this site. Not everyone spends all day trolling the internet for gossip. Keep it up P!

  55. 55

    harley quinn or poison ivy

  56. 56

Catwoman! The Halle Berry movie sucked, but the character is awesome!

  57. 57

I know its just a dream but id LOOVEEE to see Johnny Depp as The Riddler

  58. 58

Villain Mel Gibson… or how about Orange Oprah?! ;)

  59. 59

    poison ivy please

  60. 60

mad hatter!! nolan could easily transfer him into the realistic style, and he's so dark AND he's never been done before in a movie, catwoman, riddler, penguin, mr freeze….theyve all been done…..though penguin would be good as the new city mobster as falcone and and maroni are out the picture

  61. 61

Heath was incredible and yes it would be tough to recast so soon after his passing, but the joker is the best villain Batman has to offer, not to mention without him we can never have Harley Quinn in a batman film :(

  62. 62

Perez Hilton as The Penguin! A villainous gossip blogger who nose grew to resemble a penguins beak, after being pummeled one too many times by pissed off celebrities.

  63. 63

    JOHNNY DEPP AS THE RIDDLER!!!!

  64. 64

Hello brain, "next year" is 2011 so it's either opening next year, 2011 or in two years.

  65. 65

Time to bring in a FEMALE VILLIAN!!!!!

  66. 66

i definitely think that was a smart decision by chris nolan. heath's last full film appearance, and a hell of a performance at that. i think he wouldn't find anybody else out there who did it as well as heath did.

as for villains i'd like to see, the riddler could be very interesting, along with penguin, catwoman, poison ivy and harley quinn.

    we'll see what they choose!

  67. 67

Its going to be Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Riddler…. was leaked on the internet weeks ago…

  68. 68

Neil Patrick Harris as the riddler!

  69. 69

I'd like to see Mister Freeze, and Catwoman

    radfunk.com

  70. 70

I think they could do a great job with the penguin or the riddler.

  71. 71

He did not just get cast as the Joker..he landed the role, because he brilliantly portrayed the character in the light that the director wanted to go in. Heath is a brilliant actor and he did "make" the Joker role in the Dark Night. R.I.P. Re-casting it would just make alot of angry fans.
Salute to the director right move.

  72. 72

Re: kitty9 – Correction, he played a nut mob boss in face makeup; he didn't play "The Joker" at all. Now, just because he died, everyone worships his inaccurate performance. He was a great actor, but he was no Joker. Now, we'll have to live with that weak Joker rendition until someone else takes over the franchise yet again.

  73. 73

Kirstie Alley as Lola Lasagna (or Jessica Blimpson)!

  74. 74

Some people have suggested Poison Ivy, The riddler, Mr. Freeze, even the stupid Egghead. Lame and wrong. Why use a known villain? Why not come up with a new, totally unique villain for a change?

Let's not be slaves to the fan-boys.

  75. 75

    Stupid
Just cause a guy kills himself you take a role he didn't create and not recast
    stupid
Jack Nicholas will always be the best Joker anyway

  76. 76

Such a shame Heath is not around for a new movie. Seriously.
