Hulk Drama!

| Filed under: Film FlickersEd Norton

Marvel Studios and actor Ed Norton are going at it after the studio announced the actor wouldn't be reprising his role of The Hulk in the upcoming film The Avengers!

Marvel's president of production Kevin Feige released the following statement:

“We have made the decision to not bring Ed Norton back to portray the title role of Bruce Banner in The Avengers. Our decision is definitely not one based on monetary factors, but instead rooted in the need for an actor who embodies the creativity and collaborative spirit of our other talented cast members.

"The Avengers demands players who thrive working as part of an ensemble, as evidenced by Robert, Chris H, Chris E, Sam, Scarlett, and all of our talented casts. We are looking to announce a name actor who fulfills these requirements, and is passionate about the iconic role in the coming weeks.”

Talk about insulting! Ed's rep responded to Feige to tell his side of the story:

“This offensive statement from Kevin Feige at Marvel is a purposefully misleading, inappropriate attempt to paint our client in a negative light. Here are the facts: two months ago, Kevin called me and said he wanted Edward to reprise the role of Bruce Banner in ‘The Avengers.’ He told me it would be his fantasy to bring Edward on stage with the rest of the cast at [Comic-Con] and make it the event of the convention. When I said that Edward was definitely open to this idea, Kevin was very excited and we agreed that Edward should meet with [director] Joss Whedon to discuss the project. Edward and Joss had a very good meeting (confirmed by Feige to me) at which Edward said he was enthusiastic at the prospect of being a part of the ensemble cast.

“Marvel subsequently made him a financial offer to be in the film and both sides started negotiating in good faith. This past Wednesday, after several weeks of civil, uncontentious discussions, but before we had come to terms on a deal, a representative from Marvel called to say they had decided to go in another direction with the part. This seemed to us to be a financial decision but, whatever the case, it is completely their prerogative, and we accepted their decision with no hard feelings… We know a lot of fans have voiced their public disappointment with this result, but this is no excuse for Feige’s mean spirited, accusatory comments. Counter to what Kevin implies here, Edward was looking forward to the opportunity to work with Joss and the other actors in the Avengers cast, many of whom are personal friends of his. Feige’s statement is unprofessional, disingenuous and clearly defamatory. Mr. Norton talent, tireless work ethic and professional integrity deserve more respect, and so do Marvel’s fans.

We're siding with Ed on this one — that comment from Marvel was pretty unnecessary!

But The Hulk bombed anyway, so why bother reprising the role?

What do U think?

Omg, I actually agree what Perez on this. The Hulk movie was terrible so why would he want to reprise the role. Of course, he is not the only movie Hulk. They could have also went with Eric Bana, but his Hulk movie was also terrible.

  2. 2

    Welcome to Hollywood.

  3. 3

Bomb? do you ever do research? this movie did 55 Mil the first weekend. I am sure you would have liked the movoe if the Hulk wore Lady Gaga t shirts and dipped his hands in yellow paint.

  4. 4

GREED is at the base of this 'boy' fight. You can bet there was a few someones who felt the agents on Nortons side was too greedy and too tiresome. Reprise the role, why? Because sales for toys and generally marketing for XMAS toys worldwide is where the real profits come in. Besides isn't Mr. Norton a bit old to be a super hero.

  5. 5

Re: TruthSquad – The Hulk Movies in general were never very good. but Norton did fit the character perfectly! And if the plot for Avengers is any good then his role would be good.

  6. 6

Maybe they can get Matthew Morrison to star and Glee it up a bit with a few Hulk song and dance numbers

  7. 7

the Hulk didn't bomb u better go back and look through your old Varieties

  8. 8

That's not right to treat someone like that. They should have been honest with him and told Ed that they would only pay him less money and see if he would have agreed. If not, then go with someone else. Ed Norton is a good actor.

  9. 9

team Norton! he's a wonderful actor, and the statement from Marvel came off as bitter and catty, completely unprofessional. perez is right, though, Norton isn't missing out on much with this role. he's shown he's capable of deeper roles so he should go out and snag one that might get him some prestigious award rather than a line of dorks at comic-con

  11. 11

Perez, remember that Ed did NO pre-release publicity, and that shows he is not a team player. It was Liv Tyler who did most of the publicity. It did not BOMB, it just did not make the $300 million as hoped. Tell the truth, people. It is easily searched on th e internet. tate

Ed Norton is notoriously difficult to work with and he caused havok on the set of the Hulk when he demanded to essentially rewrite the script and direct the movie. When he didn't approve of the film's final edit, he refused to publicize the film. There is no way his unchecked ego could be allowed to crowd the set of a film where he's not even the biggest star.
The Dark Knight replaced it's female lead with another (Maggie Gyllenhall played the role performed by Katie Holmes in the first film) and it didn't hurt the film. AT ALL.

  13. 13

Yikes! Both Hulk movies were a bit messy. I'm with you Perez, why go down that road again?

  14. 14

Major Bummer! I love Ed Norton and think he's an amazing actor. I was really looking forward to seeing him work with Joss Whedon whose work I also love.

  15. 15

Edward Norton made a big stink when the Hulk came out, and refused to do publicity for the film, because he didn't like the edit on it. I'm sure it didn't help the box office that he wouldn't go on any talk shows or do any magazine interviews. He caused drama, and is probably the one causing it now. In any case, Marvel has every reason not to want to use him. It's sad, because he's a great actor, but he can't pretend he has no responsibility for his actions.

  16. 16

WHATTTTT???? Norton made a great Hulk.

  17. 17

Those movies were terrible. I don't care who plays him because they were played by 2 different men. I don't have that connection like I have with Bale (Batman), so whatever.

  18. 18

Ed Norton doesn't strike me as a guy who wouldn't do his job properly.

  19. 19

Agree with xcaliber on this. The rumors of Norton being an intolerable diva started leaking during American History X. He and the director had disagreements over the theatrical release cut; the studio for god-only-knows reasons sided with Norton to make it more of a happily ever after film. There are other instances with his subsequent movies that point to him being insufferable in his attempts for control.

  20. 20

What an incredibly douchy statement on the part of Marvel. It WAS totally unprofessional and defamatory.
All I could say, it if I was Ed Norton, I'd be suing them for it. They'd better cough up either the best apology in the world, or they'd better come up with a pretty solid explanation for it.
(Though Perez is right, "The Hulk" sucked. I don't see how they'd be able to make a good version of it as long as the Hulk is all CGI effects. That's what ruined both the Hulk films, because it's just not possible to make a truly convincing CGI figure.) )

  21. 21

Ed Rocks! His Hulk was great, the Bana one awful!! I think Ed wants quality filming not for him but for everyone associated with the film. And Edward did do promotion for the Hulk. There are tons of pictures of him and Liv promoting the film. I think people thrive on drama. It may be a good thing that Ed isn't in it…it sounds like its going to be a mess of a movie.

  22. 22

I can't imagine Norton playing an action here and that's why I didn't go and see his Hulk movie. HE'S TOO BLAND!

  23. 23

wow, looks like TruthSquad is as stupid as Perez. the movie is The Avengers… its not a hulk movie you morons.
the hulk is only a small part.

  24. 24

?! Ed Norton, however talented, is notoriously horrendous to work with. He believes he should call the shots, and directors HATE working with him. Undoubtedly, he butted heads with Joss, was telling Joss how to do Joss's job, and they decided to nip it in the bud. Ed insists on creative control and the power to rewrite, and usually does so once things are well underway, so that he strong arms his way or threatens to quit. He's a real jerk, and he won't be missed.

  25. 25

While Norton is a terrific actor, there were so many reports of him practically re-writing the script it's no wonder they went a different direction … Ed check yo'self lest you wreck yo'self

  26. 26

I think you're thinking of the 2003 Hulk that bombed. The Incredible Hulk in 2008 made $254,000,000, I didn't realized that was considered bombing. Other then that I agree with you on this, but keep in mind agents are supposed to paint their clients in a good light. It sounds like Edward wanted more money then Marvel wanted to give and that's the bottom line.

  27. 27

[re=5198742]Re: jess0062[/ it has to be CGI unles you know alot of 12 foot 500+ pound actors to play the role of the hulk.

  28. 28

Edward Norton was the best Hulk to date. He was amazing in that movie…it's a shame Marvel has decided to do this and to be so defamatory. Edward Norton isn't just a total cutie…but he is one of the best actors in Hollywood always taking his characters to heart and bringing them to life in such a passionate way. Shame on Feige. I won't be watching the Avengers without Edward.

  29. 29

um, so the hulk didn't bomb, it made 260+ million over a budget of 150 million, that's a pretty sharp return…

  30. 30

Hulk made money. Not a lot but it made money. It would've made more if they went with Norton's cut of the film. His creative input is on the money. I would've done anything to get him for this film, but unfortunately, that's not going to happen.

  31. 31

Batgirl Beyond…you are absolutely right. I've read that Edward Norton fancies himself an actor on Mount Olympus. He's one of those actors who think he knows better than the director and producers. Think of the guy who did "Gladiator". Early on, he certainly was recognized for his talent. But his reputation became more of a liability. At least he's won an Oscar. I'm glad someone decided to put a stop to casting Ed Norton. There are many, many other actors who will do just a good as job as he, but without the drama and hassle.

  32. 32

    Re: Batgirlbeyond
Ed Norton has a pretty good head on his shoulders. He's very smart and he knows what he's talking about. Now a days, this mixture doesn't fit in with the studio executives. All their looking for are pretty faces and empty scripts just to make a quick buck. Very mickey mouse.

  33. 33

the first Hulk sucked, the one with Eric Bana, it was AWFUL.

the second was actually pretty good, mostly b/c of Ed Norton and WAY better writing.

sounds to me like Marvel was being bitchy b/c Ed knows how much he is worth. if they are going to have a big ensemble movie they either have to pony up the big bucks for BIG stars (like RDJ) or settle for 2nd tier actors, like the 2 Chris. i wouldn't be suprised if RDJ's salary was what put them over the top financially b/c you KNOW they can't replace him, he IS Iron Man.

  34. 34

    ed is a diva

  35. 35

edward never did press for the hulk movie because he didnt like the direction the director was going in. hes also known to be very difficult to work with. that being the case why would marvel want to work with him? they made the right decision.

  36. 36

doesnt matter what the movies did. robert downey came at the end of the movie which put a tie into the avengers. and if everyone else is going to be in the avengers, ed norton should be able to too

  37. 37

and hulk is suppose to be the villian or something in avengers. so anyways if ed is a diva and stuff then good riddance. i mean they replaced the dude for iron man. but it just sucks kinda for him to not have his role. i kjust dont like the way perez said it bombed why reprise it..BECAUSE ITS AN AVENGERS MOVIE!!

  38. @v@ says – reply to this

Needless, thinly veiled bitchy comment. Ed Norton is class and integrity on legs. This other fellow, comparatively, on the other hand…probably couldn't afford him.

  39. 39

I think the Hulk movie was okay. Edward was pretty good. I think he could be better in The Avengers though so why not give him a chance? He's a really good actor and I think he could shine in this!!!

  40. 40

"The Hulk" (2003) with Eric Bana and Jennifer Connelly is the one that completely bombed. "The Incredible Hulk" with Ed Norton and Liv Tyler did extremely well! Maybe Perez didn't see the new one?

  41. 41

    douchebag imo
    norton is a great actor
and he pretty much Aced the role of hulk imo and any real fans most likely
He himself is a fan….he should cater to whatever the studio says to make fans happy
