Buh-Bye, Blockbuster!

Whomp, whomp!

It's been a long fight against the likes of Netflix and Redbox, but Blockbuster is finally admitting defeat. Experts believe by the end of next year, Blockbuster will fold and be no longer.

The company's already near the very top of 24/7 Wall St's new list of brands expected to disappear by the end of 2011 and it lost $65 million last quarter.

They're already considering Chapter 11 and with only 6,000 stores left, it seems like it would just be best to throw in the towel.

You had a good run for awhile there. Always remember the good times of yester-VHS-years!

Hopefully you're gone by the end of 2011 too Mario, hell by the end of this year is even better

    2. 2

First Rogers Video and now Blockbuster (here in ON, Canada). This doesn't really surprise me. No good selections, not enough copies and over priced rental fees!

    3. 3

Figures. I just got a membership there.

    4. 4

wow.Guess people got sick of the late fees racket

    5. 5

That sucks. I remember going to blockbuster ever since I was an infant. I loved getting a new VHS when I was a 5-year-old. Haha. It goes to show you that nothing ever lasts.

    6. 6

Ahh karma, Blockbuster I'll never forget your arrogance, your rude clerks, and your obsessive pursuit of me for a $1.21 "late charge". Buh bye.

    7. 7

      Whaaat the fuck nooooooooooo!!!
What the hell am I going to do?!?!?
      BB is the best!!!!!

    8. 8

Yes fads come and go. Remember that Perez, the next time someone offers you $20,000,000 for your website, take it!

Re: AvaLovesAbs – If you don't like his blog so much than why the hell are you on it?

    10. 10

i know you're trying to be funny perez but you need to remember that this means more people losing their jobs.

    11. 11

This really blows. They closed the blockbuster by my house last year. I was pissed about it because they get the new releases right away and redbox you have to wait a month. Plus i dont own any credit cards or debt. THIS BLOWS!!

    12. 12

Quite sad really, all the stuff I grew up with is disappearing. Its their own fault though because they could have offered their DVD's for better prices and what not anyway.

      Re: gnarly8 – lol @ 6 - good one…..and all too true

Re: Nom_Nom_Nom – to bash him now fuck off

    15. 15

Though it is sad to see another large company like this go and know that many will lose their jobs, there is a bit of karma here.

Don't forget it was the likes of Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, etc that made many Ma & Pop neighborhood video stores go bankrupt themselves when they first came onto the scene.

    16. 16

Still have both Rogers and Blockbuster here in Peterborough, On, Canada

Blockbuster failed to shift their business model with the times, failed to recognize the new media, refused to believe that what they did was no longer relevant.

    17. 17

No big deal… now they can save themselves the cost of overhead, employee salaries & benefits, insurance costs, etc. Here, in Orlando FL, I've already seen a handful of Blockbuster DVD-rental boxes, just like the ones RedBox have. Eventually, they will dominate the market since they already have established relationships with the film studios. RedBox, on the other hand, has contracts with certain studios, and therefore their catalogue is limited to what they can make available. For example, Disney is not onboard with RedBox. Perhaps Blockbuster will hold the upper hand once they go full throttle in this arena. Personally, I prefer BB.

    18. 18

I haven't gone into a blockbuster in years. I refuse. They charge way too much, and wasn't that ridiculous when you could keep the movies for almost 2 weeks when other people are waiting for their return. Greedy greedy company getting their just deserves.

    19. 19

Fuck them they did nothing for us but charge late fees late fees late fees. I told them in year 2000 the last time I used them they would fall and fold. Ha fucking ha. Good customer service and good deals go along way. Redbox all the way even if the movie suxs I don't feel so bad cuz it was just a buck instead of a fuck. So long losers.

    20. 20

That's too bad. I still like to go in and browse to see what new movies are out.

Hey dumb fuck…it has nothing to do with VHS. Blockbuster still has about a billion in sales every year, but when they wanted to spin off from Viacom, they demanded $5B from them and they couldnt come back from the debt they had to go into to fund that.

Netflix's sales are 1/10th of Blockbuster, but they dont have the debt.

The same thing happened with MovieGallery when they bought Hollywood video, they just couldnt handle the debt, even though they had 10 times the sales of Neflix.

Lesson: Dont buy something you cant afford.

      PS: Do some research dumbass.

    23. 23

It's their own fault. Surely some one warned them and told them they needed to get online and slash prices, but they were probably too stubborn to listen and now netflix is taking over along with redbox. The only reason little independent ones stay open is because of the porn they have in the back.

    24. 24

wow, but blockbuster never had an immense library of films.

    25. 25

This is the only place within miles of where I live to rent films. Great place to sell your old dvds and games without any fuss, too.

    26. 26

BBV deserves this. In the old days of VHS when a film was a new release the average wholesale price of vhs $60. The rental fee was $3.25. When DVD came to the market place wholesale was around $20 giveor take. People started buying movies more and renting less. BBV also coiuld of lowered the rental fee but they didn't. Today it cost $4.99 to rent a New Release movie from BBV. For $10 more you can buy the same movie. Rather it be at Walmart or Amazon.com

BBV also would nit stock gay theme movies for the longest time. I know I worked for them for 1 year

    27. 27

I rarely go to blockbuster anymore now that I have a netflix account…with the streaming and the 2 movies out at a time, netflix is far superior!

    28. 28

sucks, but it's their own fault. when they charge me $3.25/night or $5.99 for the week it's cheaper for me to rent from redbox or go to the bb express for the movies that redbox doesn't have.

Sucks cause we do still like to rent games and our redbox doesn't have that yet, but I read that it is slowly being added.

    29. 29

I guess this means prices are going up again!

    30. 30

Why are you being so rude? People are gonna LOSE THEIR JOBS!! I feel terribly sad. I still go to Blockbuster :( If Blockbuster closes down, there will be no more video shops in my town since Hollywood Videos closed down few weeks ago :(

    31. 31

well if they didnt charge nearly 10 dollars to rent a movie i could buy for 5 dollars more then maybe theyd stay in business

Love the people who complain about Blockbuster's late fees. Why don't you just turn your shit in on time?

    35. 35

I don't see how thousands of everday people losing their jobs is a good thing.

I don't see how you having one or two bad expiriences with Blockbuster makes you excited about the possibility of the entire company going under.

I don't see how you having crappy customer service at one or two locations makes you think that everybody who works there is an asshole.

….Yeah! more people on unemployment! awesome!

Seriously, have a little more compassion for people.

    36. 36

Well, yeah. They charge way too much for just renting a freakin movie for a couple of days!!

    37. 37

I haven't missed them in a LONG time!

    38. 38

This is the free market at work. One business folds others will rise to fill the void. Technological advances, creative ideas and competitive edge will usher the new in and drive out the old and stale. No bail outs.

    39. 39

Aylarules said it best. I have worked at BB for 10 months now. We have been printing surveys on our receipts for months now, and we always get an excellent rating because we give the best customer service possible. I know that's not true everywhere, but they've gotten really strict about customer service in the past year. Holding a grudge for a $1 late fee that was your own damn fault is something a child would do. People are so sure they're right, but they just don't want to own up to being wrong. Like the guy that was in my store today that argued with me for 30 minutes that six feet under was a movie, not a tv show. He went so far as to make us call another store to ask! It's easy to blame us, but bb closing means i lose my job. My manager, who is perhaps the single best manager i have EVER HAD will lose her job.
And have fun arguing with your redboxes claiming you turned something in on time, or that it charged your credit card. I'm sure those boxes are really understanding.

    40. 40

I have worked for Blockbuster for a few years now. I love movies and have always tried to be really nice with the best customer service i can offer. But working in retail or working any job with the public you find that no matter what there will always be those people who feel they don't have to take any responsibility for there mistakes. Any where is going to have assholes employed. It's just how some people are. My store isn't like that. We all are very good with our customer's and know alot of them on a first name basis. The thing is to all those people complaining about how " we " are the assholes is … If you actually approach us in a respectful manner and take responsibility for your own late fee admitting you weren't paying attention when we gave YOU your due dates and times after check out, paid attention to the 2 day sticker on the dvd, looked at all the signs that say rentals due by a certain time, and read your damn receipt….. We will usually help take off the late fee. Oh and i hate to break it to you but Blockbuster has a leisure time to check in the movies soooo usually u get a lil extra time before a late fee takes effect. I work at a Franchise store and i am sad that ALOT of good people are losing jobs. I don't find it funny at all. Think about those people who have families to support.

    41. 41

Re: queenladypink – hahahahahahahaha that last part about redbox was great.

Blockbuster was annoying. They charged to much and had retarded late fees. I remember nice little local video stores going out of business when BB rolled their giant stupid ass through 10 years ago. I'll be looking forward to their liquidation sale.

    42. 42

Damn it! I was just about to put my application in!!!!

    43. 43

I had netflix and I canceled because Blockbuster was far better. If you signed up for the online account , there were no late fees, you keep your movies as long as you want AND if you finish watching the movies you received in the mail, and don't want to wait to mail them off, you could exchange them at the store for FREE, also Netflix Charges extra to rent Blu Ray movies, Blockbuster does not if you have the online plan. Blockbuster always got the new releases on Blu Ray first, I even had Blu Rays in my mailbox on the exact day of release. Also BB was quicker to mail me my movies, only took a day or two before I had new movies in my mailbox. Also the Blockbuster on demand on my blu ray play had FAR more selection of movies than netflix on demand, and more high def selections !

    44. 44

Re: smeary – Rogers video is closed?? I just went there two days ago here in ontario. I know jumbo video has closed down, which sucks because they were super cheap and awesome.

    45. 45

      DAAMNNNNNNNNN….oh well :-/

    46. 46

Leave it to you Perez. Sure, now they have to pay for trying to do what Netflix started, but just remember, there are 1,000's of people losing their jobs who have mouths to feed. Not everyone who works at BB is a zit-faced dork looking for money to play their X-Box. You are SO not senstive PHil.
BTW, BB was around a long time before Redbox.

    47. 47

Good; they're assholes anyway. They charged my Mom's account for movies she didn't even rent. WE haven't been to Blockbuster in forever; we use OnDemand which is a HELL of a lot cheaper!

    48. 48

I remember not so long ago when Blockbuster moved next to every small independent video store in Toronto. Each and every one of those businesses folded due to Blockbuster. Karma is a bitch!!

    49. 49

omg! im in total shock…i'll miss you Blockbuster.

    50. 50

karmas a bitch. this company screwed me out of a job 7 years ago…now they are FUCKED!!!

    51. 51

      noooo!!!

      nott bb!!!

      ughhhhh this sucks!!!

      RIP :( ((((
