On Monday's episode of The View, Whoopi Goldberg told the world that despite the ever accumulating evidence to the contrary, Mel Gibson isn't that bad of a guy - just an asshole. In fact, she dared to say that Mel, in fact, is not a racist or an anti-semi.

Everyone is entitled to her/ his View. I supported Goldberg's View of not considering Gibson a racist because of his word choice. Did I agree with her entirely? No, but I understood her point and supported her right to her View. However, I did not appreciate that the producers allowed her to speak to VIEWers in the manner in which she did (and does). ABC is not cable. I don't want to hear that tone or language while I'm watching daytime television. If she has a problem with the 1 or 2 people who contacted her office, even if it were 50, I'd rather her contact those individuals off the air. She has a right to defend herself but most VIEWers did not contact her office, so the level of intensity which she used wasn't necessary in responding to the calls. When it comes to forces that permeate our culture and condition our children: television, music, billboards, advertisement, etc. my Views are rather conservative. I get so tired of writing letters to networks, lol but I think ABC needs a letter and does anyone have Whoopie's office number?
Also race matters and racism are very complex; ignorance is simple. Ignorant is as ignorant does. I lived in the Deep South for a year where it is still socially segregated. Blacks on one side, Whites on the other, schools and churches are also socially segregated and it worked for them, and it was what it was. White men would always talk to me and befriend me when no one else was around. They were absolute gentlemen toward me, BUT as soon as someone else walked into the room or viewed the interaction between us they became what they had been conditioned to be: a person who thought less of Blacks and non- Whites. It was quite interesting. For some, it was as if they wanted to escape the cloud of conditioning but didn't know how to be without the security of the cloud of superiority.

As I said in another post, I believe she is extremely bias when it comes to men and women. I'm actually starting to see more and more people questioning the validity of the recorded conversations. Alot of people are asking why these tapes are only being released now and not months ago when they were first recorded. Gold digger turned down $20 million. I don't watch The View anymore, ever since EH came onto the show. Yet, from the video clips I've seen of Whoopi talking about Mel, I get her point. People need to remember that Mel has had a drug addiction that went public back in the eighties, as well as a drinking problem that went public more recently. You can hide a lot of behavior from the people you work with, so the person Whoopi knows is different from the one others more close to him know. Whoopi is not defending Mel's behavior; she is only stating that from what she knows of him personally, she never saw this kind of behavior from him. It's not a reason to call her office and to yell at her secretary or assistant. If anyone of you have ever known a person addicted to drugs and alcohol, you know that a user will say and do things that, normally, would be completely out of character. It's also not unusual for a user to often state that they want to kill someone and/or start ranting about people, religion, race, politics, whatever…. It doesn't mean they are murderers and racists when they are sober. In a roundabout way, I think that's what Whoopi is saying here. Unfortunately, The View entertainment show is not the type of stage that allows for anyone to have an intelligent discussion of opinions — it's become a screaming match with acrylic nails flying in the air.
