Lady Gaga Turns A Urinal Into Art

Everything she touches turns to ~~gold~~ art!

Lady Gaga presented her own piece of art at the Inside/Out exhibition at the SHOWstudio.com shop in London. And it's a urinal!

The piece, which is named Armitage Shanks, was a prop from her recent Vogue Hommes Japan shoot where the pop star was photographed as a man.

The urinal is placed on its side and the back of the bowl reads, "I'm not f**king Duchamp but I love pissing with you." For those of you who don't get it, it's a reference to Marcel Duchamp's Fountain.

Amazing!

Duchamp, with his "readymade" art pieces was stating that you could take an existing object, reinterpret it somewhat differently, put your signature on it and call it brand new art. Which makes sense, because Gaga is appropriating Madonna's and Roisin Murphy's and Grace Jones' work and image, and calling the result "original". Of course, Duchamp was being "tongue-in-cheek". Gaga, I'm not so sure.

Sorry, she may say she's no Duchamp (and she never will be so original) but then what is the point and worth behind this 'piece' when it is a blatant copy. Not impressed Gaga, and for anyone who knows about art, they would understand that Duchamp's Fountain is one of the most recognizable works of the 20th Century and for a pop artist to attempt to leech off of his work is insulting to the real artist. There is no real thought or concept behind this piece, she simply signed a urinal - end of story. Go back to school Perez and learn something about real art.

Duchamp was amazing. His Fountain is the type of piece and statement that can only really be made once. In fact, the artistic message of Armitage Shanks seems to be that art CANNOT be everywhere. It's a middle finger to the Fountain, not an homage. I find it strange because Lady Gaga's message seems to be that she IS art at all times. Sometimes she really does seem like an unabashed duplication of the pre-existing. In this context, Armitage Shanks might actually be vaguely interesting as outsider art, as it doesn't represent an artistic vision as much as the copy-paste cultural milieu from which it was born.
