Hulu Going Down, Down, Down!

| Filed under: Tech TalkBusiness Blitz

hulu-logo.jpg

Netflix killed the video star, Blockbuster.

Now, DVR must be killing the Internet hub, Hulu, because no one is using it anymore!

At one time, Hulu was the #2 most used website to watch video (behind YouTube, of course.) Now, estimates say that the number of viewers on the site have PLUMMETED, ranking it at the #10 among video websites.

So what kind of numbers are we talking? Our sources state that the number of viewers accessing the website plunged 45 percent to 24 million in June!

Yikes! Not good!

Better come up with something quick, Hulu! You're going to need a pretty big gimmick to get back on top! (And it ain't going to be charging visitors to watch videos!)

But it isn't the DVR at all…. It's because you have to pay for it now… Why would you go to this site when you can find the shows you want to watch on other sites for free….

  2. 2

I still use it and glad it's there.

  3. 3

ok, i've tried to watch video on hulu, but i never seem to get it. i couldt watch full episodes of the shows i like.. so see ya!

  4. 4

They show TV shows. Its summer. There are no good TV shows right now. When the Fall shows come on, Hulu will go back up.

  5. 5

I work at the Netflix call center in oregon and normally the summer is pretty slow. Not this summer we are so busy. If hulu goes down then ill have more "special" people to talk to. uuggh

  6. 6

It would do MUCH better if they stopped blocking it outside of the USA!

The reason I don't watch much anymore…..BSG is over, you can't watch old eps of Stargate SG-1 or Atlantis (or old eps of ANYTHING, for that matter), Southland was cancelled, and all the other shows I watch are on summer hiatus. I bet viewership will pick up again once shows return in the fall.

  8. 8

They started to post just a few bits of some programs… And that f'ng stupidity of not allowing to watch it outside the US… Hey HULU… There are a tons of americans living abroad and we cant watch anything on your site… That's why we've moved to other sites to watch our fav. tv programs.

Anytime I go to Hulu to watch a show…all they have are CLIPS. Ive only been able to watch Wipeout as FULL EPISODES. Thats why I dont use it anymore. I dont have DVR but I know of much better places to watch shows online for free.

  10. 10

They are going down and yet they have the BALLS to charge $10 a month to use the app for the iPad!

  11. 11

Yeah, they charge now…and I still work at Blockbuster (ugh) and we're not closing anytime soon this year….

  12. 12

Maybe if hulu offered full episodes of recent shows then its popularity would sky rocket. I use it, but only for certain "Reality" tv shows. And the movie line up…Yuck! Ya, they need to offer more.

  13. 13

…die die die die die die….pay? you deserve to die…corporate filth United States crap…when will the rape end?…

  14. 14

I just use sidereel. I like it better than hulu.

  15. 15

Of course it dropped. Most shows are on Summer hiatus. It'll pick up again in the fall.

"Now, DVR must be killing the Internet hub, Hulu, because no one is using it anymore!"
    -
LOL! You really are complete moron Perez. DVRs have existed loooong before Hulu, so that's obviously not what's causing it. Get your head out of your ass.

  17. 17

i still prefer to use sidereel. you don't have to pay for it or anything. it's a much more user friendly site, too. idk where my first comment went, but it's not showin up for me.

  18. 18

I watch Netflix streaming on my PS3. No use for Hulu. Never used it once

  19. 19

HELLO!!! YOU NOW HAVE TO PAY…..PSHYEAH!!! DVR is not factored into the equation..

  20. 20

Hulu never has the shows I am trying to watch. Maybe one or two episodes if I'm lucky and lots of clips. But if I've missed several shows, forget it. Sidereel is much better.

  21. 21

THE TROUBLE WITH HULU IS THIS: THEY ARE NOT UP-TO-DATE WITH SHOWS AND SERIES. THEY POST EPISODES OF PAST SEASONS, AND ONLY VIEW THE CURRENT ONES FOR A SHORT PERIOD AND EXPIRE THE VIDEOS. WHO WANTS TO SEE SEASON ONE OF GREY'S ANATOMY?! YOU WANT TO KEEP VIEWERS HULU, KEEP YOUR VIDEOS FRESH!!

  22. 22

It's also summer, so people arent using the site as much because new shows arent on. I use Hulu all the time during the year, but now all of my shows are on hiatus til fall.

  23. 23

No, it's because you have to pay for it now. Remember when Napster did that? They didn't last very long afterward either.

  24. 24

Ok, but get THIS: I'm a teacher and have two months off this summer, so I though, hey, I'm going to subscribe to Hulu Plus because I have some time to catch up on shows. And you know what? THEY SAID I HAD TO WAIT FOR AN INVITE! Can you believe that? I'm willing to pay and I still have to be invited. I'm sorry, that's bullsh*t. I've been waiting 2 weeks for an invite, and still nothing. They deserve to tank if that's how they're gonna play.

    25

hulu sucks. It's always buffering. Can never watch a whole episode of anything.

  26. 26

There are no good network tv shows airing new episodes in the summer. It will pick up come September. Anyone that isn't an idiot would know this. The people that watch network summer shows like "America's Got Talent," "Minute to Win It," and "So You Think You Can Dance" don't know how to use computers.

  27. 27

Re: babblueyed5 – Hulu is free.

  28. 28

i dont watch it any more… they only have a couple of episodes for each show and they are going to be charging people!

  29. 29

and they have so many commercials!!!

  30. 30

Re: LolaLola1 – There are licensing issues that prevent them from allowing non-US viewers to watch the shows online. When Fox sells the rights of a show like Glee to E4 in the UK, they no longer have the UK rights. They cannot allow people from the UK to watch the episodes online, that'd be up to E4. They're not just doing it to piss you off or keep other nationalities from watching the show. Legally, they can't do it. It has nothing to do with whether or not you're an American, it's about the country you're in at the time.

  31. 31

I do not watch because i live in Canada and anytime i've tried to watch something on it when a link has directed me to its site i have been denied! (forgive bad typing, i'm so wasted todya!)

  32. 32

Let Canada use Hulu! That might help

  33. 33

They got rid of The Daily Show and the Colbert Report (which im sure had a huge impact) also WAY, WAY, WAY too many advertisements! And the ads are SOOO much louder than the shows so unless you have a computer remote its a little hard to kick back and watch a movie or a show when every 5 minutes someone is screaming at you to buy their stupid shampoo!! Its great for catching up on a few trashy shows i've missed during the week but Re: Sir-Bangs-Alot – brings up a really good point. There are way too many out of date shows and movies. I understand that getting the rights to good shows and films is difficult when you run a free website. But i guess thats why hulu kinda sucks. but i appreciate that it is there when I need to kill some time.

  34. 34

yes, it's because they wanted to actually make money and now they cost money and suck. the links go nowhere but amazon and itunes. um, if i were in the mood to pay, i do not need a middleman telling me where to find them. hulu: obsolete

  35. 35

it will go back up in the fall. when i was in school i always used hulu because i wouldn't have time to watch the shows. now that it's summer i have all the time in the world and i can watch them when they're actually aired.

  36. 36

There is nothing to watch on their site right now. Like some have said - Hulu has some cheesy new show called Wipeout and the rest is just Z-list crap. Reruns are impossible because they expire the episodes. Once there are a few new fall episodes of everyone's favorite shows then Hulu will pick back up.

I did notice their commercial length has doubled recently and on top of that they want to charge for premium as well. Good luck with that….

They really blew it this summer. There is nothing to watch. I haven't used it since The Office and 30 Rock went off except to watch a small British comedy called Peep Show - freakin' hilarious.

  37. 37

Hulu's main bag is television shows and it's the middle of summer. We've got a few months till sweeps. This is not news.

  38. 38

    Re: smalls77

Ha! Those "special" people you complain about are the reason you have a job dipshit…

  39. 39

    Re: kateybella
I joined Sidereel on your recommendation and it's a joke. No shows are even on the site. Most of them you have to pay for or it just directs you to HulU or the networks website. I can do that myself…what a disappointment…

  40. 40

First they are going to a paying model, second, once you leave the states you can't access Movies unless you use a proxy server. And the even with the paying model you have to watch the fucking commercials. At least with a DVR you can skip the frigging commercials. . . .

  41. 41

When you can fast forward through Hulu commercials, I'll consider watching.

  42. 42

I dont think it is the effects of a DVR at all or Netflix. Its just that it is summer time and no shows are out at the moment and all the good shows are gone… 24 and Lost… But I'm sure it will pick up again in the fall. Also global expansion should be the next frontier… tho I do think it will be a little hard to get investor interested in biting if the site viewership is going in a down fall spiral

  43. 43

also… I think it will be a very good time for a new site to rise and take the throne offering shows that do not expire. Hmm…. the gaint is weaken, time to attack

  44. 44

yeah i agree, im in australia and can never watch anything on there

  45. 45

if they weren't hogging down episodes such as intervention or modern family… maybe people would bother…

  46. 46

noooo i love hulu they play all my fav shows they better not even think about shuttin it down i mean comon its free who doesnt like free things

  47. 47

they need to join the competition and make it so people in other countries can watch their content. Sidereel, fancast, tvduck all do. Hulu is better and i would use it if they would stop being lame.

  48. 48

ok @ Stepy and @ missything.. i am not that dumb.. on hulu u cant even get full episodes of shows we actually wanna see! so who cares if it goes away.. like i said before.. see ya!!

  49. 49

if shows were available on hulu to people outside the states they would have so many more viewers. it would also probably kill all the other illegal viewing sites out there b/c people could actually watch their shows in quality and on time…

  50. 50

Nobody links to it on social media websites anymore because only people in the US can see it. I think that's a big part of the problem.

  51. 51

charging and cutting user that are overseas off. F them!

  52. 52

I dont think its the DVR's either. I just recently moved and havent gotten cable yet because all the shows I want to watch I can find directly on the program networks website. I checked out Hulu and they didnt seem to have a large selection. At ABC NBC CBS…and so on, you can find all your favorite shows and some even go back many seasons.

  53. 53

I am literally watching hulu as we speak.. ironic?

  54. 54

Every goddamn video on HULU has too many fucking commercials peppered all throughout it just like the ones you post on your site.

Why waste time watching ads when you can video the stuff commercial free somewhere else.??

Aqs a matter of fact Whenever you post a video on this site, I go out of my way to search for it on Youtube rather than make you money sitting through the ad, that is, unless the video is about you, if its about you I just simply skip it altogether. If I wanted to watch a pig spurt crap I'd go to a county fair.

    Peace!

  55. 55

maybe if half the videos weren't just 1 minute clips, people would still use hulu.
plus the ads are quite annoying.

  56. 56

HELLO THE REASON NO ONE IS USING IT NOW IS BECAUSE THERE ARENT ANY REALLY AWESOME SHOWS ON DURING THE SUMMER! i mean i love SYTYCD and Burn Notice but those are really the only good shows other HBO which you cant watch on HULU. I watched HULU WAY more in the fall and spring than i do now in the summer. just sayin

  57. 57

Why don't you talk about the real news with Hulu. Like the man who is suing them for copyright and all that because he claims it was his idea.

  58. 58

I still use Hulu and I really like it! I don't know why people don't like it anymore….

  59. 59

Nooo! I like that site. I watch Family Guy on it. :(

    perez,

you and most of your readers are morons. DVR has been out forever. It is summer time. Of course there are fewer visitors. i would think it would drop MORE since there is little new content.

And for all you morons talking about how you have to pay now, chill out. I'm all for calling out corporate greed, but hulu is showing the same free content they were before. The paid service is for a more expanded library. You have to pay for hulu on the ipad because the app is only for the paid service.

Furthermore, NetFlix and Hulu only became competitors when Hulu began it's paid service. Hulu's main draw was streaming new TV shows and NetFlix's online service mainly streamed film and TV shows from yesteryear.

Creating fake stories puts you in the same company as Fox News.

  61. 61

I can never find any of my favorite shows, and what they DO have is mostly just clips. They suck.

  62. 62

You guys shoudl try out Fancast.com..similar to Hulu, but without the problems that people are complaining about. also, it's legal, so won't send you to virus-central Megavideo

  63. 63

Its because all the summer TV shows sucks ass.

  64. 64

You know, America, as in the USA, forget that they are NOT the only country in the world… actually there are more Americans living abroad than in the States (like myself), that's why we knew that our votes were not counted when Bush won for the second time… haven't met ONE probush NOT ONE (here abroad), anyways… so we watch our stuff on other sites, there are millions! HULU works only in the States which pisses me off.

  65. 65

hulu's been great for me, but it's summertime now so there's absolutely nothing good to watch… the numbers will pick up again in october.

  66. 66

HULU failed because every ten seconds there was a stupid advertisement you were forced to watch — or not, which people didn't.

  67. 67

I would use HULU if it were available in my country.

It's only for people in the US!!

  68. 68

UMM here is an idea… LET CANADIANS AND OTHER NON-AMERICANS WATCH YOUR CONTENT!!!

  69. 69

People used 2 watch Glee on it thats why it plunged now cuz Glee isnt on until spetember

  70. 70

i believe the reason the ratings have fallen is simple that there are NO SHOWS ON IN THE SUMMERTIME well none that people care about anyway.
