Re: nicoleincos – They didn't vote against the funds for First Responders. They voted against all of the other very expensive non-essential pork items in the bill. They wanted to take them out of the bill. Weiner is grandstanding because he knows that most people don't know the first thing about how legislation is passed. and all of the expensive pork that is included in these bills. From reading some of the comments here he certainly does know his constituents. He knows you will all condemn the Reoublicans for something that they want to correct. It's garbage like the pork that taxes us to death.

The Republicans wanted to add a Illegal Alien amendment to the 9-11 First Responders health care bill according to GOP Representative from New York Peter King. When the Democratic Representatives said "NO" lets pass this Bill without any Amendments THIS BILL IS ABOUT 911 FIRST RESPONDERS HEALTH NOTHING ELSE, the Republican Party said NO.

The Democrats added immigration legislation to the bill and cut Republicans off from adding amendments. The Republicans opposed the immigration legislation and, therefore, voted against the bill in the unnecessary procedural super majority vote.

The Dems are getting ready for next year when they are in the minority and want all bills passed by the 2/3 (290) and not just 218. Set up a filibuster rule in the house. So the new minority (Democrats) can control the new majority (Republicans).
It's just more of the Elites forcing their agenda on the middle class.

If people read the bill they were both wrong. They used the podium to make their careers stand out. I am angry at both sides. Politicans are out for themselfs. I think we should make a new party and call it US. We should all call both parties and get angry. Those who were there during 9/11 deserve better. The good thing is its getting the public's eye. You guys have no idea how many bills haven't passed that could help us. We've become so busy that we don't pay attention and thats what the politicans are hoping for.

Several other posters don't seem to understand a few key points here.

Because of a different set of procedures used to get this bill to vote faster, it required a two-thirds majority, not a simple majority. 12 Republicans voted with the Democrats to get this passed.

This bill had nothing to do with abortion or immigration. The one sore subject was whether people who were illegal immigrants on 9/11 but worked at Ground Zero after the collapse might be eligible for the health benefits afforded in this bill. I don't care what your views are on illegal immigration; anybody who ran into that burning wreckage on 9/11 and in its immediate aftermath is an American.

And full disclosure: I am one of the people who would receive health care under this bill. Now, we're going to have to sue to get these benefits. The Republicans have succeeded in two ways by blocking this bill; they have ensured that it will take longer for the sick to get the care they need, and they have ensured that a lawsuit will be brought to make it happen. Both will end up costing the Federal government millions of dollars more than if the bill had just been passed. Congressman Weiner was right to call out the Republicans, who, in less than 10 years, seem to have forgotten the horrors of 9/11.
