Will Ricky Gervais Be Replacing Steve Carell On The Office?!

| Filed under: TV NewsSteve CarellRicky Gervais

THIS is brilliant!

And frankly, it's the only plausible way to keep the show going after Steve Carell signs off in May!

Now that the actor plans to retire his character, Michael Scott, on the HIGHlarious show The Office, producers are scrambling to figure out how exactly to continue the series in his absence, and they're reportedly toying with the idea of bringing in the man that started it all - Ricky Gervais' horiffically uncomfortable David Brent from the original, UK series!

Effing AMAZING! Inspired!

And think about the built-in fanbase that would tune in just to see Gervais play that awful character again! It would COMPLETELY revive the series!

Executive Producer Paul Lieberstein is toying with the idea, and says:

"We talked about it today for a while. It's not the leading idea… [but] it's not a dead idea. I don't know how David Brent could take Michael Scott's place because it would be a little bit too much of a coincidence that a documentary crew was also following him. He was also fired for incompetence [in the U.K. Office], so we'd have to create some back story for what happened. There would be some things to deal with. On the flip side, you have someone who's incredibly talented and who has played with a level of realism that's the same as our show. It wouldn't be like we would be taking a character from Cheers, like Norm, and putting him in the show. If Dunder Mifflin needed to replace Michael Scott, they'd consider both internal and external candidates. And we will show them considering both. We'll kind of start [the replacement process] and put it in motion. I don't want Steve to go, and if he decides he wants to stay, I will be very happy with that."

And Gervais himself seems to be against it, but who the eff knows if he's serious or not when he says:

"As David Brent would say, 'Been there, done that, bought the T-shirt …' As I would say, 'Why would I get up at 6 a.m. five days a week for seven years when I can hire someone else to do that and still get my syndication money?'"

We think they SERIOUSLY need to consider this option if they want to keep the show alive!

And now that this is out in the ethos as a possibility, we just don't think anything else will compare!

What do U think?? Do U want to see David Brent replace Michael Scott in The Office??

As a loyal follower of the Office, I must say it's the only way. I think that if Ricky Gervais doesn't do it then the Office should just end on a good note instead of getting worse and worse. I want to see my show end at a good place.

  2. 2

Yes, a million times yes! This would be a bold move but it would be a total game changer!

  3. 3

    not first!!

BLASPHEMY!!…they should just end the show…

as the Brentmeister General would say, "You're having a laugh."

  4. 4

Do I want to see David Brent replace Michael Scott? Let me think about that…NO! There's got to be a way to keep Steve Carell like a ton of $$.

No way in hell is the brilliant (and hugely big headed) Ricky G coming back to this. Heck, in the UK he was done with The Office after two seasons and a Christmas special. Did anyone see season 2 of Extras. The storyline being all about him being unhappy with the way his ideas for a tv sitcom are taken by execs to become something far removed from his original ideas. This is the same situation. He likes to be in charge and when the suits move in, he moves out. I know I have never met the guy but I get his drive to move on to bigger and better things. Like his Hollywood career, I for one like his movies - go Ricky!

do not want steve carrell to leave in the first place, but he would be PERFECT.

Ricky Gervais is a comic genius. Please make this happen

  9. 9

Although I would hate to see Steve leave the show…Ricky filling the void would be ideal. But if Ricky refuses, then I could see Kevin James breathing new life to the show.

  10. 10

HOLY F–KING SHIT YES! I'm dying…please let this happen!

  11. 11

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!! If Gervais lends himself to such travesty, I will burn my "The Office" (BBC version) DVDs.

  12. 12

hell yes!!! i think david brent trumps michael scott anyway… as funny as steve carrell is, nothing compares to ricky's comedic timing and dry humor. he's fucking brilliant!

  13. 13

    Re: pinklady62090 – I agree 100%. I

  14. 14

I stopped watching "The Office" right after Jim and Pam got married. Bringing in Gervais as David Brent (or just Gervais period as an original character) would definitely get me to tune in again.

  15. 15

    not gonna happen

  16. 16

Noooo! I tried to watch the UK version and I couldn't even understand him. They need to get some A-list comedic celebrity in there to replace Carell. I'm thinking Stephen Colbert? OR promote Dwight to Regional Manager.
The UK version was too similar to this one. It just wouldn't be cool.

  17. 17

Frankly, I don't understand the whole Steve Carrell thing. He's kinda funny but his shtick is always the same. He's the same character in everything he's done. Ricky Gervais is funny without having to do anything.

  18. 18

I think they should just end it after this season, it's getting exhausting to watch and it has seemed to have lost its awesomeness.

  19. 19

Yeah that guy is the shit, I think he's funnier then Steve. Sorry you fanfreaks…

  20. 20

OMG YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!!!!! I used to love the American office UNTIL I watched the British office and it BLOWS IT AWAY mostly because of RICKY!!!!!!!! I'm LOLING just thinking about the posibilities!!!! For whoever hasn't seen their version, they have it on netflix and you will NOT be disappointed!

  21. Jayro says – reply to this

this might sound really random, but i would actually like to see John Malkovich take over. i think that would be absolutely fantastic.

  22. 22

ABSO FREAKIN LUTELY!!!!!! He is WAYYYY funnier than Carrell! THat would make the show even more worth watching!!!!!!!! YES YES YES!!!

  23. 23

    "out in the ethos"
    are you fucking serious?
Mario, where do you find these writers?!? Even your sister was better than these hacks.

btw, dumbfuck, the word is ether…

  24. 24

not going to happen: " I'm not taking over from Steve Carell and will just continue to make millions for doing fuck all because I created the show and all the characters, and own the format and it's being syndicated now and I get paid every time any episode of any version is played anywhere in the world, and I stopped my version at its height and I don't think I can improve on that, and I don't want to go back to that and get up at 6am every day of the week for 7 years. " - Ricky Gervais via his blog….check it out ;-)

  26. 26

It would make me start watching the office again, but it's not a good idea. Please, just let Steve's departure be the finale and allow the show to end gracefully.

  27. 27

    ETHOS? ok now

  28. 28

Love Steve and I think Ricky will be the only person to replace him. Stand by for some squirming lol

  29. 29

For anyone who hasn't seen Ricky in The Office, just wait til you see him dancing. Uncomfortable is not the word lol.

  30. 30

Eh I don't think he'll do it. No way.

  31. 31

Re: anonymous_000 – WTF? Have you even watched the original Office? It's not at all like the later series of The Office USA.

And please, please keep Ricky Gervais. He's an unfunny twat.

  32. 32

If Ricky Gervais declines, then please get Eddie Izzard.

  33. 33

Do you yanks understand his humour? I would only want him back on the uk office not the painfully unfunny american office!!!!!!

  34. 34

It's a clever concept and Gervais is always hilarious, but I always liked wondering whatever happened to David Brent after Wernham Hogg.

  35. 35

That is the only way I would watch this show. Bring me David Brent.

  36. 36

the american version of the office is shit. ricky would make it considerably less shit, and maybe even as good as the original if he has input as far as the script goes

  37. 37

  38. 38

That truly would be BRILLIANT, but no way Ricky would ever do this. He has a very thriving career himself, just as Steve does.

  39. 39

haha here is the script he would have to follow www.twsstoday.com
